In this report, we’ve analyzed the import of denim fabrics into India during April’19 – June ’19. From April to June, India has imported approx. XXXXXXX sqm of denim fabrics out of which two companies  imported approx. 50% of total fabrics . About 62% came from China while about 22% came from Turkey. While India is itself a large producer of denim fabrics, still some fabric does get imported from various locations.

Monthly Imports Of Denim Fabrics

The total import of denim fabrics in India during April’19 – June’19 was approx. 1.02 million sqm out of which 3.48 lacs sqm was imported in the month of April at an average price of $ 2.34/sqm, 2.68 lacs sqm was imported in the month of May at an average price of $2.26/sqm and 4.04 lacs was imported in the month of June at an average price of $2.43/sqm. May was the month of slowdown and June was the peak importing month during this period of three months.

Leading Exporting Countries

Major imports of denim fabrics in India during April- July came from China and Turkey. Out of total imports, 62% came from China, 22% came from Turkey and the rest came from other countries including Hong Kong, Egypt, Bangladesh, Italy, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan. China exported approx. 6.30 lacs sqm of denim fabrics and Turkey exported approx. 2.26 lacs sqm of denim fabrics at an average price of $2.07/sqm and $2.77/sqm respectively. The sudden rise in the imports of Turkish Denim Fabric is surprising, if this pace remains the same throughout the year, import of over a million sqm of denim fabric from Turkey should not be a big deal. Italy exported the fabrics at the most expensive average prices of $4.91/sqm and China at the least expensive at $2.07/sqm.

Leading Importing Companies

Shahi Exports, Jeans Knit (FFI) and United Dry Goods are three major importing companies which had imported over 60% (collectively) of total denim fabrics imported during April- June this year. Shahi imported approx. 2.63 lacs sqm (26%) at an average price of $ 2.37/sqm, Jeans Knit imported approx. 2.47 lacs sqm (24%) at an average price of $2.87/sqm and United Dry Goods imported approx. 1.09 lacs sqm (11%) at an average price of $1.17/sqm. Ram Narayan Company imported the denim fabric at the most expensive average price of $3.89/sqm and United Dry Goods imported at the least average price of $1.17/sqm.                                                

JEANS KNIT PVT LIMITED

Popularly known as FFI  , the company imported a total 2.26 lacs sqm of denim fabrics  during the period of April- June’19 from Turkey, out of which, 1.70 lacs sqm of denim fabric was imported by Jeans Knit Private Limited only at an average price of $ 2.76/sqm. The major chunk of fabric imported by Jeans Knit Private Limited pertained to Turkey only which is approx. 69% and the rest were exported from Egypt, Italy, Vietnam, China, and Japan.                          

SHAHI EXPORTS PVT LIMITED

Shahi Exports imported approx. 95% of its denim fabrics from China. Approx. 2.51 lacs sqm of denim fabrics have been imported from China during the April-June’19 at an average price of $2.34/sqm. Rest of the fabrics were imported from Hong Kong, Italy, and Japan.
