In our last report on Japan, we’ve analysed the import of Jeans in Japan duing 2017 –19 where we learnt that Japan imported approx 175-180 million jeans in a year on an average. Japan is also a premium exporter of denim fabrics as with only some of its famous denim mills it is able to churn out and export some high end fabrics. In this report, we’ve analysed the export of Denim Fabric for the same period.

Export Of Denim Fabric – 2017
In the year 2017, approx. 20 million sq meter of denim fabrics exported from Japan at an average price of $5.24 per sq mtr. China and the USA are the two prime export destination during that year and accounted for over 50% share in the total export. The USA imported half of what China imported during 2017. So far as the average price was concerned, China bought the Japanese fabric at an average price of $4.22 and The USA at $6.14 . Bangladesh, Vietnam and Mexico also imported a good volume of Japanese denim fabric and accounted for 9.59% , 9.56% and 8.86% share in the total export. Tunisia bought the denim at the most expensive average price of $8.66 and China at the cheapest average price of $4.22.

Export Of Fabric – 2018
In the year 2018, the export of denim fabric witnessed a fall of apporx. 14% from 2017 and dropped upto 17.47 million sq. meter of denim fabrics. China led the charts in the year 2018 also with 30.8% share in total export however its share also fell by 4% . US slipped to #3 and Vietnam captured the position of #2 with 19.6% share. Bangladesh increased its share upto 11.5% from 9.59% within a year and the USA lost by approx. 3% within the same time period. Vietnam bought the fabric at an average price of $2.84 which is also least amongst all and Italy bought at the most expensive average price of $8.53.

Export Of Fabric – 2019 ( August)
First 9 months of export figures have surprised us on many counts.
- China witnessed an upward move in the import and captured 35.38% share in the total export with 4.55 million sq meter of denim fabrics.
- The USA slipped to #4 , it was at #3 in 2018. The share dropped to 9.72% only , it was 17.20% in 2017 . The share of the USA fell by 50% within 21 months.
- Bangladesh is at #2 with 17.15% share , Vietnam slipped to #3 and also lost approx 5% of its share from 2018.
- 9 months trend shows that, by the end of this year, export of fabric may reach upto 17 million sq meter , still lesser than the last year export.

Thus the overall volumes of exports from Japan have gone down and also to some extent the prices. This reflects the difficult situation of the market globally which is also affecting Japan. Their productions are not huge in Japan and shifting their productions overseas as far as possible . Nisshinbo and Kurabo shifted their productions long back and even Kaihara makes more in China than in Japan. Other companies like Kuroki etc have also reduced productions.
