China, the biggest exporter of apparel in the world has been going downhill when it comes to apparel exports – hit by various factors. Specially business with US has been affected due to the Trump effect. However, what is disturbing for the country is that its exports to EU have seen a big fall of over 21% in 2019 and expected to fall further. Countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam are eating away the share of China. This trend is likely to continue with Bangladesh getting stronger and also Vietnam getting FTA with EU which will enable it to ship duty free to Europe – within few years – with effect coming immediately to certain extent.  China is also actually aware of this and hence its massive investments in textile and apparel sector in Vietnam.

Lets check out in the report below to understand the import of Jeans by EU from China till September 2019.  However, all data for 2019 has been extrapolated till December 2019 for easy comparison.

Import Of Jeans By Major EU Countries

The imports of Denim apparel into EU from China for 2017 was 76.96 million pcs  with an average price of Euro 6.44/Pc which further increased by 10% to 84.93 million pcs at an average price of Euro 5.13/Pc in 2018. Import for the first nine months of 2019 is 50.10 million pcs and if the same trends continues the import are likely to  be 66.81 million pcs at the end of the year 2019. We see that China may actually export more jeans in 2018 to EU than it did in 2017. Thus if the projected figures are achieved, we will see about 66.81 million pcs of jeans being exported from China in 2019 against about 84.93 million pcs in 2018.

Germany which is one of the biggest buyers in EU, has been reducing the imports from China by every passing year. In 2017, the share in the import was 18% which reduced to 16% now , if you look at the import volumes,  Germany reduced its import from China by apporx. 4 million pcs of jeans . The other countries including France , UK and Spain have likely to import lesser jeans as compared to 2017 .  The trend of average price has been also very fluctuating and in most of the cases, increased however Italy and Netherlands’s average price are an exception to this.

Import of Men and Women Jeans

The imports of men’ jeans for the year 2017 was 26.71 million pcs at an average price of Euro 7.20/Pc , which jumped to 33.34 million pcs  at an average price of Euro 6.03/Pc, further the imports of men’s jeans for the first nine months of 2019 was 17.43 million pcs and if the same trend is followed the imports is likely to be around 23.25 million pcs at the end of the year 2019. So between 2017 to 2019 , we may see a fall of 3.5 million pcs (expected) of men jeans only.

The imports of women’ jeans into EU from China for the year 2017 was 50.25 million pcs at an average price of Euro 6.03/ Pc which increased to 51.59 million pcs at an average price of Euro 4.67/Pc . The imports of women’s jeans into EU from China for the first nine months of 2019 was 32.67 million pcs which is likely to be 43.56 million pcs at the end of the year 2019.

Average Price (Men & Women)

GERMANY

Germany is one of the biggest buyers of Chinese Jeans in the EU. In 2017, Germany imported 14.21 million pcs of Jeans out of which 7.56 Million pcs were men jeans and the rest were women jeans. In 2018, the import reduced to 12.87 million pcs , a total fall of 9% . The overall share of women jeans in the total imports also reduced in 2018. In 2019, on the basis of 9 months of import trend, the import is likely to be around 10-11 million pcs which lead to a substantial fall of 19% in imports. In three years, average price has witnessed a upward move upto euro 1.

FRANCE

France is likely to import 40% lesserin 2019  than what it imported in 2017, if the trends of 1st nine months of 2019 remained the same. In 2017, France imported 11.09 million pcs of jeans which is expected to be around 5.29 million pcs at the end of 2019. The average price has also been increased from euro 6.97/pc to euro 7.33/pc.

UNITED KINGDOM

UK import from China has been falling since 2018 , as it records a total fall of 48% in jeans import , by the end of 2019 it is expected to fall by 33%. In 2017, the import of jeans was 14.82 million pcs which reduced to half in 2018 and reached to 7.76 million pcs. 2019 is expected to import 5.21 million pcs of jeans only. There has been inconsistencies in the average price which went from euro 4.20/pc to euro 9.10/pc
