Cheap Monday Spring Summer 2015 Collection

Alternative grunge looks , punk elements ,  huge prints are some of the key features of Cheap Monday SS’15 Collection. Already famous for their experimentation with denim, the brand pushes the envelope further with some flashy punkish elements . The  missing denim fabric is some of their pieces takes distressing and tears to another level. Grunge looks are accentuated using rips, dyes, striped socks , etchings, scribbles and more. Indigo checks is something new that we see in their denim shirting collection. Net enmeshed skinny jeans is another look which might be considered by many as punkish oddity.

Bangladesh has become the favorite destination of the retailers and brands worldwide . While , a few years back, the country was known more as a origin for sourcing cheap garments, it has quickly scaled up the value chain and is also producing value added jeans and apparel using skills and technology from around the world. The country is not only able to import fabrics and accessories from factories around the world, but its textile industry base is increasingly supporting its garment export sector. Its current denim fabric production covers about 40% of its requirements.

Some figures related to denim exports from Bangladesh from our data section  . ” While Bangladesh exported about 74 million pieces of denim apparel to US in 2013, it shipped around 140  million pieces of jeans to Europe. It was actually the largest exporter of men’s jeans to Europe in 2013  with   89 million pcs compared to 65 million pcs from China. Also notable is the growth achieved in exporting these products in 2013 despite a lot of disturbances. The denim apparel exports  from Bangladesh surged by 11.48% to US in 2013 over 2012 and to EU by over 19.65% in the same period . This is not a mean achievement and speaks volumes about the efforts put in by the garment and textile industry of Bangladesh and the continued trust reposed by the buyers”.

  • Gas Denim Fall Winter 2014 Collection

Gas Denim Fall Winter 2014 Collection

Denim is once again the protagonist of the new Gas Jeans Collection, onto which all the research and the brand’s innovative drive are expressed. The theme that characterizes the denim garments designed by the brand for this season, is undoubtedly the biker-rock style of the iconic movie stars such as James Dean and Steve McQueen. The distinctive pieces have been revisited in a brand new and contemporary key and have been elaborated with treatments and innovative  processes. The Oklahoma jacket and the Morrison 5 pockets for him, the Merida biker jacket, the mini skirt and the new Jade boyfriend jeans for her, all have been reinterpreted following this inspiration, thus giving the denim a dark, vintage-looking tonality and an outstanding leather-effect waxing. Even the cloud-effect washes aren’t missing, along with aggressive, sanding and stonewash ones, as well as raw, destroyed and used treatments, which give a strong and rebellious look, especially when applied onto grey and black denim items. Micropatterns and prints are used not only on the classic denim shirts but also the jeans series. Prints have been growing strong from season to season with mutations in their patterns, visibilities and intensities with more subtle looks trending in.  The skinny trend gains more and more importance, just as the carrot cut and the jegging model  enrich the menswear line.  This DENIM ATELIER project was developed in the Gas Artisanal Room, the research and development laboratory of the brand, , and it includes Made in Italy, well-finished  denim garments, whose details underline their origin and the attention in the creation of the items.

H&M , after dabbling with many other green initiatives , is further going green . On October 2, H&M introduces Conscious Denim, a collection with clean styling and contemporary fits, that not only uses more sustainable materials, but also more conscious processes. In a first for H&M, the washes used on its denim have been graded to assess their environmental impact, including energy and water use. The collection includes pieces for women, men and children, and will be available worldwide in around 1,000 stores for women and 700 stores for men, as well as online.

“We’re so excited about Conscious Denim at H&M. We’ve worked hard to reduce the environmental impact from the washing processes alongside using materials that are more sustainable. The collection is full of great pieces, and proves how sustainability can equal great style,” says Helena Halverson, Head of Sustainability H&M.

Conscious Blue (rather Green ) Denim From H&M : Denimsandjeans.com

The result is a full collection with modern cuts in deep indigo tones. For women, Conscious Denim has the essential styles of the season, from low-waited or high-waited skinny jeans to boyfriend cut and tapered ankle. Alongside these denim essentials, there are also pieces made from conscious materials that wear just like denim, to create the full look. Jogger jeans in knitted indigo have the softness of sweatpants, while an indigo boiler suit in Tinsel has a sharp, slim fit.

Conscious Blue (rather Green ) Denim From H&M : Denimsandjeans.com

For men, classic 5 pocket styles in raw denim are joined by jeans in different cuts and washes. As well as a deep indigo denim jacket, there’s a twill workers jacket while an indigo wool coat is the perfect outer layer for the season. Meanwhile for kids there are different styles, including jeans and dungarees, all in conscious materials.

Each garment in the Conscious Denim range will feature the Clever Care label, with details on sustainable wear and care, while in store hang tags will describe the conscious qualities of each piece. It’s all part of H&M’s long term commitment to more sustainable fashion. Conscious Denim will be available October 2 in 1,000 stores for women and 700 stores for men worldwide, as well as online at www.hm.com.

  • Germany – Imports of Denim Jeans | 2010-2014

Germany – Imports of Denim Jeans | 2010-2014

Germany is the largest market for denim jeans and apparel in Europe . It has a strong affiliation for jeans , specially men’s jeans , and is importing them from not only around the world but also from within EU27.  No exporter , whether outside or inside EU , can ignore the German market due to its sheer size.

We will look in this report the following :

    a) Imports of denim jeans made into Germany from EU27 , 2010-2014
    b) Imports of denim jeans made into Germany from out of EU27 , 2010-2014
    c)
Total quantities of jeans coming into Germany during this time.
    d) Average prices coming from these regions during 2010-2014 period.
    e) Trends in quantity and prices  from these two origins and their comparison. Which of them gets an  increasing share of the market now?
    f) Tables , graphs and explanations.

    [private_special]

If we look at the table below, we will find that Germany has imported more jeans in 2010 – 169 million pcs – than it imported in 2013  – 158 million pcs. This shows a fall in total imports of jeans coming into Germany , which is not a very good sign for denim exporters. But more interesting is to note that the jeans coming from out of EU have declined while those coming from EU27 have increased during the same period.  In 2010 , about 135 million pcs came from out of EU27. However, in 2013 we find only 114 million pcs of  jeans coming from out of EU27 .

    Year Out of EU27
    (mill pcs.)
    From EU27
    (mill. Pcs)
    Total Qty.
    (mill. Pcs)
    % from Out of EU27 % from EU27
    2010 135 34 169 79.9 20.1
    2011 134 38 172 77.9 22.1
    2012 115 39 154 74.7 25.3
    2013 114 44 158 72.2 27.8
    2014(upto june) 52 21 73 71.3 28.7

The imports from EU27 have, on the other side, increased from 34 million pcs to 44 million pcs.  The market share of EU27 in German jeans market has increased from 20% in 2010 to about 29% in 2014. This shows an increasing tendency of Germans to import jeans from within EU. But we need to also remember that all of these jeans coming from within EU may not be actually made in EU and some of them may have been imported into those countries and re exported to Germany. But when we look at the price comparison, we will have a better idea . The following graph shows the increasing trend of imports from within EU27 as compared to rest of the world.

% Imports from EU27 and out of EU 27

denim imports into germany 2010 to 2014

    Prices of Imports

Now let us look at the prices of imports of denim jeans into Germany from EU and from rest of the world. Lets have a look at the table below :

Year Import Prices from out of EU27 Import prices from EU27
    2010 7.1 17.5
    2011 7.7 16.7
    2012 8.5 16.3
    2013 8.7 16.4
    2014 8.7 16.5

prices of denim imports in germany

The prices of jeans coming into Germany is , surprisingly, showing a reverse trend. The prices of jeans coming from EU27 has fallen from Euro 17.5/pc in 2010 to Euro 16.5/pc in 2014.  On the other hand the prices coming from rest of the world has increased from Euro 7.1 to Euro 8.7 / pc.  So on the one hand the price of jeans from EU27 has fallen by about 6% , that from the rest of the world has increased by over 20% . This is a significant increase and we can see that the trend of price increase is continuous through all years . This also signifies that EU27 imports into Germany are now more competitive and hence getting a higher share into German market , whereas the rest of the world is getting expensive (relatively) and not able to retain as much share of the market.

This is good news for EU27 and shows that even with higher prices they are able to get an increasing share of the market . Also shows that near sourcing for quick fashion is very important for German market as well and enables them to buy at double the prices of imports , which have a much higher lead times involved.

  • Calik Denim at Munich Fabric Start | FW15-16

At the recently held Munich Fabric Start fair, the Turkish denim company Calik presented some innovative fabrics specially designed for the German market at the Bluezone. Soft handles become one of the distinct features of the AW 15-16 collection. Based on the special requirements and tastes of the German consumers, all colored denims and indigo denims have very soft, almost caressing, cotton like touch thanks to a special R&D process developed by the Calik team and strong dimensional stability also.

Stay-dark and Stay-black colored fabrics maintain a true denim look and colors can keep their performance up to 40 home washes. In the 100% modal denims, colored modals add novelty to the group in terms of color performance and soft handles.

Other features of the new AW15-16 focus on the following themes:

    1. A color story: Indian Blue

    a. Calik Denim introduces new shades of indigo for the AW14-15 season: Nippon Blue is an almost black, very dark shade of pure indigo, that can be washed down easily for bright and clear contrasts or can be used raw for customized, personal indigo shades. Smokey Blue is a blue grey shade of indigo that washes down to nice blue and when bleached becomes baby blue.

    Calik Nippon Blue Denim

    2. An advanced comfort story: Easy Mode

    a. High performance and ease of move in fancy structures where denim look meets second skin property in the same product. Fancy weaves, broken twills and double face denims in high elasticity and super soft handles maintain an excellent growth and provide fashion and comfort. Swan, Manas and Dharma are striking examples of this concept.

    3. A superstretch story: Fix-Fit

    a. In the popular FixFit collection of super stretch and power stretch denims, Calik introduces modal denims in stay-black and stay-blue colors for ultimate comfort, softness, color performance and fit retention. One of the striking features of the new collection is the natural softness of the denims thanks to special processes developed by the in-house R&D team resulting in softness without chemicals. Use of advanced fiber technology such as DualFx and Sorona all provide improved and stabilized recoveries of these highly elastic denims with an elasticity range of 50-85%. Overall, this season’s FixFit denims offered by Calik combine body shaping, natural softness and feeling luxurious. Wider widths offered provide an additional benefit. Alex and Valdez are two interesting families developed especially for the German market bearing the entirespecial features above.

    Calik Denim Fixfit with DualFx

    4. A sustainable denims story: Botanical Sense

    a. Calik Denim continues with Botanical Sense, the sustainable collection and this season, introduces denims with recycled polyester and Crailar flax in addition to the existing organic cotton, recycled cotton, BCI cotton and natural fiber denims range. Crailar flax is a high performance fiber that requires much less water and chemicals during growth, and has remarkable dimensional stability, moisture wicking property and strong dye uptake, making it a very good replacement for cotton. Additionally, Crailar fiber has irregular slubs for more authentic and natural looks. As for the use of recycled pes, one meter of fabric contains 7 big bottles, adding meaning and fashion to the denim fabric.

    Calik RecycledCotton Denim

    b. Calik is in an exclusive colloboration with Crailar Flax for developing denims made from this sustainable new fiber. As stated by Crailar;

“Based on forecasted population growth, the global demand for cotton will double by 2030. But there is simply not enough water or land for cotton alone to accommodate that order of growth, leaving a gap of 22 million tons or more. Man-made cellulosic fibers, such as viscose, as well as synthetic fibers can help narrow that gap but, in the case of synthetics, production depletes precious natural resources such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas.

Still, studies have shown that consumers overwhelmingly prefer to wear natural fibers. According to Cotton Inc.’s 2011 Lifestyle Monitor™ Survey, 76 percent of consumers say that their favorite fibers to wear are either all-natural or all-natural blends. Taken together, that clear consumer preference, diminishing resources for cultivating cotton, and synthetic fibers’ dependence on petrochemicals translate to an enormous opportunity for non-cotton natural fibers.”

    Calik Denim CrailarFlax

Further, Crailar Flax requires 99% less water than cotton, and fabrics made from Crailar are soft as cotton, with better wicking properties, less shrinkage and stronger in terms of durability. The enhanced dye uptake property of the fiber allows for use of less indigo to achieve the comparably same result in look as in denim, but with much less chemicals.

    Italy 83,088 4.37

India , Mexico , China, Pakistan and Turkey have been the main suppliers of denim fabrics to Colombia during these two months with similar levels of quantities. However, there is a vast difference in average prices. While India is a poor $1.50 , Turkey is at $4.34 and even Mexico and Pakistan are much better at $2.50 and $2.29 respectively.  Turkey is really maintaining its high levels of prices and quantities and in essence seems to be the most recognized quality exporter to Colombia.

  • Cheap Monday Fall Winter 2014 Collection

The opposing youth are eager for change, and the conflict between the playful and serious has been an inspiration for the prints as well as the denim  collection. Raw, heavy denim and inverted denim are prominent throughout the collection. Texture is important with crinkled jersey, fleece, leatherette, pleated chiffon and jersey as well as clear sequins on knits, flannel, denim and jersey.  There is a clean seriousness to the look with more sombre colours. A faux knot detail is used to shape the garments on denim dresses, blouses, jersey and sweat. A knotted reflective backpack and puffer bags to match the collection. The rough, smudgy and random versus the clean and crisp play an important role for the denim as well, where greys and blue blacks, rips and bleach clash with constructed crisp twills and square shapes on white coatings. A new mid-rise skinny fit is introduced in “Prime”, as well as a new denim jacket “ikon”.
