Dolce & Gabbana SS 2019 : Denim World

One of the most inclusive collection in Milan Fashion Week this year, Dolce & Gabbana succeeded in attracting audience in its own style. Its line-up included different shapes, sizes , ages and ethnicities. The veteran Italian actors Monica Bellucci and Isabella Rossellini, the plus-size model Ashley Graham, and Emma Weymouth, the first black viscountess in Britain, were included in a model line-up that celebrated glamour beyond the catwalk norm . Instead of ‘D&G’ this year the duo displayed a new description for their Spring/Summer 2019 as ‘DNA’. These letters flashed up on backdrop screen with the names of all 151 women, men and children there who represented Italian life on the runway.

“The most important thing at this moment is the human touch,” explained Stefano. “It’s true that we live in a digital era and this is not haute couture. But it’s about clothes hand-worked and then put in a machine.”. With hashtags like #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport, womesn’s rights continue to dominate the spotlight. The collection included Sicilian funeral procession, church bells pealing as veiled, black-clad women. The procession of the most sexiest widows’ was seen by Italy for the first time. The moment of fashion show was treated as a theatre with different colors, patterns and stunning designs wore by different celebs.

Let’s have a look at the  denim part of the  collection that was showcased. It included a wide array of styles and designs – from most basic washes/distresses to complex patchworks / fabric mixes and heavy embellishments .

Denim Exports To USA By Vietnam Grow Sharply | 2014-18

Vietnam , one of the most favourable country these days when it comes to Textile & Garments including Denim. A Country which holds 10 bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, including ASEAN Free Trade Area, five ASEAN+1 FTAs, and FTAs with Japan, South Korea, Chile , Russia and the Eurasia Economic Union and a country which is expected to execute CPTPP & EVFTA by the end of this year. Vietnam has evolved as a major denim player in past few years and expected to grow faster in coming years due to its geography and advantages due to its demographics and policies. Statistics shows that by the end of 2017, Vietnam had attracted 2,079 projects in the garment-textile sector with total capital of 15.75 billion USD, up 10 percent year-on-year.  Investors come from 57 countries and territories nationwide, with major ones from Taiwan and Hong Kong (China) and the Republic of Korea (RoK). Growth of exports of denim from Vietnam was over 25% in 2017 !

In the first six months of this year, reports have confirmed that the investment worth 2.8 billion USD in FDI was injected into Vietnam’s garment-textile industry . The Chief of Vietnam Textile And Apparel Association (VITAS) asserted that Vietnam’s garment-textile export revenue is going to hit 200 billion USD by 2035. Denim is also major part in the entire periphery of Textile & Garment and is expected to achieve an annual growth rate of 30% so far as US export is concerned . The country is also getting strong hold in EU market and post the implementation of EVFTA , the country will become stronger.

After the tariff war between US and China , a substantial production shift in Vietnam is expected and if the trade war remains for longer time , China’s loss will be Vietnam’s gain. In this report , we’ve analysed the denim exports of Vietnam to US from 2014 to June 2018 and it gives an idea how the country is growing rapidly.

Average Price Of All Denim Apparel To USA ( USD/Pc) For 2014-18

The average price shown an inconsistent trend over the years and has been changing each year. However years 2015,2016 and 2017 look little consistent as there were very minor variances observed in these years. In 2015 ,2016 & 2017 , the average price were USD8.48/Pc, USD8.57/Pc and USD8.39/Pc respectively. In 2018 , the price has increased by approx. USD 1 and reached to USD9.32/Pc which is close to the average price of the year 2014. Vietnam needs to become more competitive in terms of price as countries like Cambodia and Bangladesh have been offering the denim apparel at a very competitive price . However, we need to also remember that Vietnam is offering more value added products than these countries.

Denim Exports To USA By Vietnam | 2014-18 - Denimsandjeans.com

There is lot to come for Vietnam , recently Chinese Denim Companies PROSPERITY got the final nod for their factory in Vietnam . The Investment has been constantly flowing into Vietnam from Hongkong , South Korea and Canada. Korean company TCE is in process of expanding three times the size. The country needs to strengthen its capacity not in terms of finished goods but also in terms of raw material as well . Hopefully after the implementation of CPTPP and EVFTA , we will see a huge expected jump in the investment and exports from Vietnam.

    1. Denim Export By Morocco To EU | 2015-2018

Morocco has been an important denim player in EU and has witnessed an encouraging growth figures in past few years however this year seems not well placed in terms of growth. In 2015, the total denim exports to EU were 10.13 Million Pcs which saw the highest growth of 30.50% in 2016 and reached upto 13.22 million pcs. In 2017, the export grew however the growth rate suffered and dropped down substantially at 0.83% only. In the 1st six months of 2018, the denim export is 6.05 million pcs which is expected to reach at 12.10 million pcs by the end of this year if the country keeps the same pace. 2. % Share Of Men & Women Denim In Total Exports To EU

Segregating the imports of total denim apparels into Men & Women, we drew the conclusion that over the tenure of 4 years, Morocco exported more Men’s denim in 2015 as compared to Women’s denim and the variance was close to 14% however post 2015, there were some more minor drop downs in the exports of Women’s Denim Pcs noticed. In the year 2015 , 2016 and 2017 , the export of women’s denim apparels were 43% , 39%and 40%  respectively against the export of men’s denim apparels which were 57%, 61% and 64%  respectively for the same corresponding years. The average price of women’s denim apparels remained lesser than men’s denim apparel during this period. Thus we can see more growth in women’s denim rather than men’s. Year 2018 will be the year of shift and if all went as per the pace of 1st six months of this year, Men’s denim will gain 3% share in the total denim exports and the same will be lost by Women’s denim which will cause shrink in the total share of women’s denim at 36% only in the total denim exports.

In 2015 , the total denim exports to EU by Tunisia was 18.26 Million Pcs which saw a fairly reasonable growth of 4.93%  in 2016 and reached to 19.16 million pcs . In 2017 , the export tumbled at the decline rate of  -5.17%  . In the 1st six months of 2018 , the denim export stood at 9.87 million pcs which is expected to reach at 19.74 million pcs by the end of this year if the country keeps the same pace. The decline is expected to be turned into a growth rate which may reach upto 8.64% by the end of this year. The average price also seems to come down at it best as in the first half , the price has been reported at 17.30 Euro/Pc which is the lowest if we compare from the previous two years which were 17.67 and 17.46 Euro/Pcs . The trend in the price shows the country is becoming more competitive in price slowly .

    5. % Share Of Men & Women Denim In Total Exports To EU

Segregating the imports of total denim apparels into Men & Women , we drew the conclusion that over the tenure of 4 years , Tunisia exported more men’s denim however the share has started shrinking post 2016 by 1% each year. In 2018 , the expected share for men’s denim is 64% and 36% for women’s denim.  Hence Tunisia is mainly a male garment exporter. When it comes to analyzing the price trend of both the categories , the price of men’s denim has been increasing over the years however women’s denim fell more than Euro 1 in past 4 years which could be a reason of increase in the exports of women’s denim in recent times .

    7. Denim Export By Egypt To EU | 2015-2018

Increasing returns , this is what Egyptian Denim Export is behaving when we talk about its export to EU for the period 2015-18 . In 2015 , the total denim exports to EU was 7.7 Million Pcs which saw the increase of 14.42 % in 2016 and reached upto 8.81 million pcs . In 2017 , the export again noticed a rise, however the growth rate was even better than 2016 and it was   15.89%  . In the 1st six months of 2018 , the denim export stood at 6 million pcs which is expected to reach upto 12 million pcs by the end of this year if the country keeps the same pace. The results seems beyond  expectations and Egypt is expected to have the growth rate of 17.53% by the end of 2018. One good this in this four years is that , the country has managed to be competitive in terms of price and we can see the trend of average price over the period of four years. In the beginning the price was 12.37 Euro/Pc which came to 11.21 Euro/Pc in 2016.  This shows that Egypt is now concentration more on value added denim and has average price almost same as Morocco and Tunisia. A few years back , Egypt was a low value supplier exporting low priced jeans. It seems to have climbed up the value chain.

  • Foam Dyeing–The New Sustainable Frontier For Denim Fabrics

Foam Dyeing–The New Sustainable Frontier For Denim Fabrics

Wrangler recently announced the adoption of Foam dyed indigo fabrics to be used in their jeans. The fabric is to be made at the Spanish denim mill Tejido Royo and will be shipped , starting from December , to Wrangler’s garment vendors globally .

“While we have been able to reduce 3 billion liters of water in product finishing during the past 10 years, we know that more needs to be done across the entire supply chain,” said Wrangler President Tom Waldron. “Foam technology reduces water consumption and pollution further upstream, helping our fabric suppliers to dramatically minimize the impacts of making denim fabric blue.”

So what is Foam dyeing and why is Wrangler adopting it ?

Late last  year representatives from across the apparel industry gathered at the Fiber and Bio Polymer Research Institute of Texas Tech University for the reveal of a disruptive, new foam-dyeing process for producing denim. Early stage investors, including Wrangler, Lee and the Walmart Foundation were on hand for the event, hosted by Indigo Mill Designs (IMD).

“A large fabric mill uses millions of gallons of water every day to dye denim,” explains Sudhakar Puvvada, who leads denim innovation work for Wrangler and Lee’s Global Innovation Center and served as an advisor to IMD. “IMD’s innovation can greatly reduce that amount and cut the energy needed for dyeing and wastewater treatment.”

An article by R.Tharpe of Indigo Mill Designs(North Carolina) , D Etheridge of Fiber and Polymer Research Institute (Texas) and H Malpass of Denim Dyeing Technical Service LLC – the creators of this technology – is quite indicative of how this process works . We bring some excerpts from the article, the complete article can be downloaded here .

Denim is being challenged partly because of its enormous volume and partly because of its dyeing method. Indigo, the unique colorant for ubiquitous blue jeans, is highly sustainable; safe enough to be widely used as a food colorant. However, the indigo dyeing process is criticized for poor sustainability, primarily because sulphur reducing compounds and large amounts of problematic wastewater are required with current dyeing methods. Foam dyeing is a watersaving, environmentally friendly technology that is increasingly used around the world, primarily for fabrics. Its use for indigo dyeing of denim yarns has been hindered by the fact that indigo becomes insoluble in the presence of oxygen. The research reported here developed a foam dyeing system that eliminates the oxygen until the dyeing process is completed and the yarns are ready to be oxidized. Results to date have demonstrated that speed of the dyeing process can be multiplied, dye uptake and dye fastness improved, water and energy use greatly reduced, floor space required for dyeing dramatically reduced, and all without the use of the sulphur compounds……

The continuous Rope dyeing system was introduced in 1921 and there are vat boxes for indigo dyeing . There are seldom less than six such vats, with up to twelve being common. Sizes of each one of these range from 500 to 1,500 gallons of fluid capacity. These are accompanied by a multitude of guiding rollers and multiple 5,000-to-10,000-gallon storage tanks. The footprint on a factory floor may be 100 meters long. In addition to being a slow-moving, water-intensive technology producing large amounts of salts, the dyed ‘ropes’ – consisting of about 400 individual yarns – must be re-beamed (separated into individual yarns for weaving). This is a slow, tedious task that is very labor-intensive.

The new patent-pending design consisted of three sequential chambers to ensure an anaerobic environment for dyeing:

    1. A purge chamber that removes oxygen from the yarns before going into an application chamber. Among other things, this contributes toward eliminating the use of sulphur reducing compounds.
    2. An application chamber that precisely controls the delivery of foam-based dye liquor to deliver the dye liquid from the collapsed foam in a manner that enables control of dye uptake and penetration.
    3. A kinetic chamber that modulates the dye absorption to minimize the amounts of detrimental surface indigo and wasted indigo, enhance the darkness and purity of the blue, and improve the color fastness.

The yarn handling system was designed to deliver 40 yarns from a small beam through the dyeing system and rewind the dyed yarns onto another beam. It provides computerized control of yarn tensions from beginning to end. It was designed to reach a maximum speed of 100 yards per minute (ypm). Added to the system is a creel with computerized control of yarn tensions, so that yarn packages can be fed directly into the yarn handling system. Fabrication of the foam generator and the three-stage, anaerobic foam dyeing system was contracted to Gaston Systems2 . It delivers precisely metered foam directly to the 40-yarn sheet as it passes over a sequence of rollers. It is coordinated by computerized feedback with the yarn handling system, so that constant yarn tension is maintained throughout. It enables real-time adjustments for foam blow ratios and wet pick-up levels. It also automatically adjusts these variables if the speed of the yarn movement is adjusted. The system was completed by the addition of an oxidation and drying rack between the kinetic chamber and the yarn take-up beam. The yarns need time to oxidise before drying, because moisture is necessary for oxidation to occur. Fortunately, oxidation occurs quite rapidly and the design of the rack is adequate even when running at maximum speed. However, the infrared drying capacity we used is generally inadequate when the yarns are running faster than 40 yards per minute; therefore, it is being increased.

    image

The image above from the article shows a demo setup of dyeing – which of course might be bigger when it comes to larger scales.

Some of the results as per the authors are :

    • Effective dyeing is obtained on yarns taken from spinning machines. Thus, the costly and water-intensive pre-treatment of yarns required with the traditional technology may be eliminated.
    • Dyeing is efficient at speeds between 20 and 100 yards per minute (ypm); therefore, since the yarn handling system does not run faster than 100 ypm, a maximum running speed is not yet known.
    • Keeping the oxygen content below a threshold is critical to the shade and dye fastness. This is true in both the application chamber and the kinetic chamber.
    • Effective dyeing on most yarns may be achieved at moisture levels that leave the yarn just damp to the touch, which require a small amount of heat to dry.
    • The flexibility of the system enables control of dye placement within the yarns to greater extremes than is now possible with conventional technology.
    • The system also allows changing variables like dye concentration, blow ratio, and wet pick-up in real time, without stopping the dyeing run.
    • Both pre- and post-washing is eliminated from the dyeing process. Dyed yarns are immediately available as inputs for downstream processes in fabric formation.
    • The elimination of dye baths and the consistency of the applicator/yarn interface have potential to eliminate shade differences when going scaling up from a smaller sample fabric width to full-width fabric.

The technology looks very promising and may have significant impact on denim production if it is successful – leading to a high degree of sustainability in denim fabric production. We are looking a slew of new technologies working towards sustainability coming up in recent years. Many of them have been successful and some have not been. Early adopters , of course have a risk, but also a big chance of success in the current scenario where awareness on sustainability is on the rise. We wish for industry’s sake, that such technologies should succeed !

American Giant: The New Debutant In Denim Business ( Made In USA)

Amid all the disapointment which have been coming from American Denim Industry including closure of several denim mills and bankruptcy of apparel retailers for last few months , Apparel brand American Giant ( Founded in 2012 ) came up with its debut in the denim market with its first men’s pair of jeans. Bayard Winthrop, American Giant’s founder and CEO, remembers the golden days of American blue jeans while referring the classic era of ’70s and ’80s, when American brands like Wrangler, Lee, and Levi’s were the synonymous of blue jeans and which are still known for its quality . However he feels sad for the current state of American Denim Industry as most of the brands has been outsourced the manufacturing.

Before launching its first pairs of jeans , Bayard and his team rigorously worked on designing, procurement , fitting and other residuals of making great jeans. Winthrop says,“Jeans are an incredibly complex garment,” he further adds “We wanted them to be the right weight and made from a durable material, but we also wanted them to be both flattering and comfortable. We surveyed customers and iterated on the design more times than I can count.”

The denim is made at Mt. Vernon Mills in Georgia and garmented in a LA factory   New Fashion Products.

    History Of Natural Indigo

India has a long history of over 3000 years with Indigo and generations have passed the know how of Indigo dyeing to their descendants and the knowledge is still being pursued by few artisan families in different parts of India.Indigo’s name gives its origin away: it simply means ‘the Indian’ or ‘from India.’ But we now know that, besides India, indigo was also used in tropical zones in Africa and China. Our ancestors in India, East Asia and Egypt, as well as probably the Maya, used the blue dye derived from the Indigofera Tinctoria plant to dye their clothes. The oldest known fabric dyed indigo dating to 6,000 years ago was discovered in 2009 at Huaca Prieta, Peru.India was a primary supplier of indigo to Europe as early as the Greco-Roman era and Indigo was also a part of India’s freedom struggle as last year we celebrated the centenary year of the Champaran Satyagraha, when Mahatma Gandhi highlighted the woeful plight of Indian farmers who had been forced to cultivate indigo by the British.

    Origins Of Natural Indigo

SHOP INTO THE BLUE | Denimsandjeans

Many plants have been identified as potentially rich in natural dye content and some of them have been used for natural dyeing for quite some time. Normally natural dyes are extracted from roots, stems, leaves , flowers and fruit of various plants. In living Indigo plant form , indigo exists as a colourless substance comprised of sugars and indoxyl. Indigo’s seed treatments contain microbes that live within plant tissue, unlike existing microbial seed treatments that contain microbes that live around the roots. Highest yield of indigo dye was obtained from using 2.0 sodium hydroxide solution.

The process of extracting blue colour from green leaves of indigo plant is magical and unique. It involves steps, to be carried out with great timing. The indigo pigment gets detached from glucose as the leaves are soaked in water and fermented. The leaves are taken out , leaving indigo white in the water, which when exposed to air gives out the blue colour. This blue colour of indigo remains hidden until the leaf of indigo plant is fermented. After the water is whisked properly, the blue colour settles down forming watery clay. This sludge is then heated or sundried to be made in to cakes. The indigo seed is sown about the end of February or beginning of March, it germinate in the course of four to five days and at the middle of June the plant can obtained a height between 3 and 5 feet and has a stem of about a quarter of an inch in diameter as the plant grows. The coloring principle gradually increases until it reaches a maximum about the end of August.

    Synthetic Indigo

Demand for indigo dramatically increased during the industrial revolution, in part due to the popularity of Levi Strauss’s blue denim jeans. The natural extraction process was expensive and could not produce the mass quantities required for the burgeoning garment industry. So chemists began searching for synthetic methods of producing the dye. In 1883 Adolf Von Bayer (of Bayer aspirin fame) researched indigo’s chemical structure. He found that he could treat omega-bromoacetanilide with an alkali (a substance that is high in pH) to produce oxindole. Later, based on this observation, K. Heumann identified a synthesis pathway to produce indigo. Within 14 years their work resulted in the first commercial production of the synthetic dye. In 1905 Bayer was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery.

The synthesis of N-(2-carboxyphenyl) glycine from the easy to obtain aniline provided a new and economically attractive route. BASF developed a commercially feasible manufacturing process that was in use by 1897, at which time 19,000 tons of indigo were being produced from plant sources. By 1914 this had dropped to 1,000 tons by 1914 and continued to contract. In last few decades the usage of Natural Indigo dye has almost finished. However, there is a resurgence in the interest in the natural indigo and going over next few years we are likely to see much more manufacturing being done with Natural Indigo.
