Universal Threads – A New Billion Dollar Brand By Target

US based Apparel retailer – Target has made an official announcement to replace MOSSIMO and introduced a brand new female denim label – UNIVERSAL THREADS , which will be available in plus sizes also . This will be the 11th new brand launched by Target in last 2 years with its aim to launch over a dozen new brands . Universal Threads will be the largest brand that Target will launch this year and will be in same category as its billion dollar brands Merona and Mossimo – both of which are being phased out. The retailer had already announced their intention to drop Merona and Mossimo brands last year as they had been doing a lot of R&D to improve their apparel offerings globally. A New Day, Goodfellow & Co., JoyLab and Project 62 were the four brands which had been launched last year by Target out of which A New Day and JoyLab are women’s apparel brands catering the size range upto 4X and 26.

The company is targeting a larger chunk of consumers and hence will keep the prices affordable for lower middle class consumers . The company is claiming that no article under this brand will be priced over USD 39.95.

Mark Tritton, Target’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer said in an official statement:

“Denim is a part of every woman’s wardrobe, and with fewer options in the marketplace and learnings from the brands we’ve recently launched, we’re excited to bring our guests a lifestyle brand rooted in denim that’s also an amazing everyday value. This brand is all about ideas and outfits, not just items. It includes apparel, footwear and accessories that are sure to become guest favorites.

In developing this brand, we conducted research with nearly 1,000 women from across the country to better understand their needs when it comes to shopping denim. What we heard from nearly all of them was that they dreaded shopping for new jeans. Whether the rise was too long or the inseam was too short or the pair of jeans they wanted didn’t come in their size—finding the perfect fit for their body type was just too challenging. That’s a problem we wanted to solve. So, our design team rolled up their sleeves and got to work creating a line that caters to all women, with multiple fits, silhouettes, lengths, rises and sizes.”

Target is hoping to offer a quality product at low prices to reclaim its position in the global market. Adding shoes and other accessories gives the added push to the brand.

With annual revenues of over $69 billion, Target’s brick-and-mortar system stands at 1,828 stores.  In the third quarter alone, the company opened 12 new stores and remodeled 37 older ones. We wish all the best to Target and welcome the new denim brand in the space.

Universal Thread will be available in all Target stores and online at Target.com on February 4th .

Vietnam, being one of the most important sourcing destination , has become the favorite destination for the sourcing heads. The country is already a large supplier of apparel to US and EU and is expected to further grow in the coming years as the pending FTA with EU goes through mid of this year as expected by the authorities. This will bring numerous opportunities for the country to grow itself and play a much larger role as international supplier of apparel globally. Vietnam has currently about  6,000 garment related companies that employ 2.5 million people and exported $28 billion worth of clothes in 2016. Vietnam is the 2nd largest exporter of apparel to the US behind China. Though the free trade agreement with the US and Vietnam (TPP) was chopped by President Trump but Vietnam is still able to produce for their US customers with reasonably competitive price. From a labor cost perspective, Vietnam Garment Industry in 2017 is cheaper than China and Eastern Europe. Vietnam has signed many bi-lateral trade agreements with other countries including Russia recently which in long run benefits the local as well as the International Denim Supply Chain Partners.Vietnam has very favorable trade policies and the labor conditions are very stable as compared to other countries. In the latest Apparel Survey Report released by Mckinsey , Vietnam ranked in top 5 as the best sourcing destinations in the world.

The 3rd Edition of Vietnam show is scheduled to be held on June 27-28 at Riverside Palace, Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam . World’s largest democracy ,2nd largest market and 3rd biggest economy , Yes ! India is a country of massive opportunities especially in the Retail sector . The country will be touching the magical figure of USD 1 Trillion by 2020 so far as the Indian Retail Industry is concerned. Few decades ago , the country ruled the International Textile Industry and after such a long gap , India is again attracting the International Retailers as the taxation and ease of doing business are becoming more favorable for the foreign investors.

Denim has been one of the main booming textile segments in India in the past decade. Whereas in 2005 the consumption of jeans in India was less than 300 million pieces, today its almost doubled with an annual growth rate of more than 10%. This gives India the distinction of being the second largest consumer of denim apparel after China. India is set to get a big lead over US and EU in coming years, as its consumption increases in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and consumption reaches about 1 billion jeans in next 5 years !

The 1st edition of Denimsandjeans India was a great success and witnessed the phenomenal attendances throughout the show. With over 1500 visitors from all the major brands, retailers, buying houses etc in India and some from overseas, it was probably the best aggregation of denim industry in India in a very  long time. There is a very significant difference in prices of denim coming from US and from China. However, this is mainly due to the fact that US companies are selling at higher prices and their fabrics are not underinvoiced. However, its very difficult to find the right price of Chinese products as they under invoice their prices to avoid duties.
Another point needs to be kept under consideration. US is now losing all its mills with the closing of companies like DNA , Cone etc . Now only one mill is left and it might be a matter of time before it is also closed. This means more fabric will come into Mexico from other countries. Also Chinese might lose some market as their prices rise and under invoicing gets difficult.

  • The Secret Garden Installation at the Children’s Museum of the Arts By Ian Berry In New York

The Secret Garden Installation at the Children’s Museum of the Arts By Ian Berry In New York

Ace Denim Artist- Ian Berry has recently open his Secret Garden Installation at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan.Over many days Ian and a team of helpers installed this incredible Secret Garden installation at the Chelsea based Museum. The museum that has served hundreds of thousands of Children and has the mission ‘to introduce children and their families to the transformative power of the arts by providing opportunities to make art side-by-side with working artists.’Ian has has worked with schools to do projects, and teachers write to him when they do lessons on him. He enjoys getting mails from kids who have made work inspired by him.

The Secret Garden Installation at the Children's Museum of the Arts By Ian Berry In New York | Denimsandjeans.com

Ian says he wishes he could be young again to go to somewhere like the CMA. It is a truly amazing place for young minds, and their parents. There are teaching artists there with many different work rooms, for all ages up to 16. They can learn to work in many different ways, often inspired by the artwork on display – Ellan Harvey also shows alongside Ians work. We think it is important for children to interact with Arts, especially with school budgets tightening and the arts being one of the biggest to suffer.

‘Crazy when you think both our countries excel in creative fields and really lead the world. Yet, we are constantly told at school that arts are a hobby with visions of the starving artist.’ Ian Says.

The installation that you can walk through, on top of a denim path is filled with various flowers and plants, from roses to cacti, wisteria to chrysanthemum all made out of jeans. You’ll find denim tools and also a hare, peering through, unafraid of the children about to run through. But the most impressive part is the trellis coming down from the ceiling. Hundreds of vines and leaves dangling, as if taking over the museum. Part looking like a magical urban secret garden, part looking like the place has been abandoned and left for the nature to take over.  The flowers hanging and the butterflies lead to an almost Alice in Wonderland fantasy world that the kids and parents alike have been amazed by.

The installation for the Bridge Project was inspired by thinking of childhood. Immediately Ian thought of playing outside at his Yorkshire hometown. He feels now children play less outside and interact and look less at the nature around. Kids are obsessed with tech with ipads and instant gratification and the games played are not with balls and dirty knees but with thumbs the only strength needed with video consoles.

‘Sadly too I also feel that with the stresses of life parents even spend less time with their kids, even if they are with them, they may be distracted by their phones and the constant fear of missing something.’

‘I only wonder what this may do to tiny minds seeing people always glued to their phones and screens’

He had noticed in the past that when recreating familiar scenes people took for granted, out of a material so common, people saw it differently and revalued it. He would love for the parent and child to walk through together so that when they do go through parks and gardens they will look at them more closely.

‘I also thought that while in many other way New York would be one of the most inspiring cities for a child to live in, many kids wouldn’t have gardens. Yes, there are places to go and famous parks with amazing open space and the High Line too, but perhaps it may inspire parents to find a little secret garden near to them’

In a interesting opening to the garden, Ian shows a cotton plant and explains that this is where the jeans we wear first comes from. Not bad going from plants to pants, to plants again.Ian will return in April 2018 to help to take some classes based on his work.

Tonello, Cone denim, NYC factory and Christine Rucci had supported Ian berry in the making of the Secret Garden along with dozens of other assistants.

The installation is up until April 2018 at Children’s Museum of the Arts, 103 Charlton St. NYC
