The Circular Denim Capsule: Primark X The Jeans Redesign Project

    circular denim capsule

Primark has introduced a new denim collection designed to highlight what circular fashion signifies in practical terms. The new line is part of The Jeans Redesign, a fashion initiative of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and features denim that has been designed, developed, and created to correspond with the Foundation’s goal of a circular economy for fashion. The procedures, which are based on the concepts of the circular economy, suggest that jeans are worn extensively, built to be created again, and are made with safe, recycled, or sustainable materials.

According to Lynne Walker, Director of Primark Cares, the brand launched its Primark Cares sustainability strategy in September and committed to changing the way clothes were made, ensuring that they are recyclable by design by 2027, made from more sustainably sourced or recycled materials by 2030, and last longer by 2025. He went on to say that denim was a wardrobe essential for their customers. This new release brings the brand’s vision to life and demonstrates what these changes look like in reality. Most significantly, Primark proves that it can do so without sacrificing the design and price that customers adore.

    WHAT THE COLLECTION OFFERS

    primark

Primark has therefore provided a unique range of jeans and denim jackets as a part of the Jeans Redesign project, comprising denim crafted from organic cotton and recycled fibers. The denim is deliberately designed to be readily recycled so that it can be transformed into new jeans after they are no longer worn. Metal rivets are not used in the product, which is a regular style component that might make recycling jeans difficult. Labeling also contains instructions for removing buttons and zips before recycling to guarantee that the product has a second life.

The jeans are composed of 70% organic cotton, 29% recycled cotton, and 1% elastane, while the jackets are produced from 80% organic cotton and 20% recycled cotton. Denim jeans for women (£19) and denim jeans for men (£18), as well as an adult denim jacket for £21, are part of the assortment. The collection is currently available at 161 Primark stores in the 14 countries in which the brand serves.

â€œThe Jeans Redesign demonstrates that it is possible to create garments fit for a circular economy today, and this is just the beginning. By taking these first steps, organizations like Primark build the confidence to explore and learn how to put products on the market aligned with circular economy principles. We’re pleased to see the solutions identified by Primark and the growing understanding of the challenges that must be addressed to achieve the vision of a circular economy for fashion. Now the concept has been proven, we cannot delay progress. There is a need for industry and government to continue driving momentum, at pace and scale, towards a circular economy for fashion.” Said Laura Balmond, Lead Make Fashion Circular at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

    PRIMARK’S COMMITMENTS TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY

    The Jeans Redesign

This circular denim line adheres to the announcement of Primark’s sustainability strategy the previous month. In it, the global retailer stated its objectives to minimize fashion waste, cut carbon emissions up to 50 percent throughout its value chain, and promote the welfare of those who work in the Primark factory. Primark is boosting its drive to become a circular and more sustainable brand within the next five years, with nine commitments all across the company. Primary goals include utilizing recycled and more sustainably produced materials in all of its merchandise by 2030, up from 25% currently, thus guaranteeing clothing is meant to be recycled, and enabling clothes longevity.

It is also seeking ways to reduce carbon emissions by at least50 percent at every phase of the Primark product life cycle, from the fields where raw materials are acquired to processing and manufacturing, and finally when a customer buys a Primark product in-store. In terms of the people who manufacture its products, Primark is striving to support and enrich the lives of those who make its apparel by implementing a living wage by 2030.

    ABOUT THE JEANS REDESIGN PROJECT

    primark

The Jeans Redesign initiative aims to increase circularity in the denim industry by establishing criteria for brands and suppliers to follow to create jeans that can be used more often, are designed to be created again, and are made of safe, recyclable, and renewable sources. The guidelines, which are based on the principles of the circular economy, will seek to guarantee that jeans last longer, can be readily recycled, and are created in a way that is healthier for the environment and the health of garment workers. This project is a part of Make Fashion Circular.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation launched Make Fashion Circular during the 2017 Copenhagen Fashion Summit, bringing together leaders from the fashion industry to collaborate with cities, charities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and innovators. Make Fashion Circular is spearheading international efforts to reduce waste and pollution in the fashion industry by establishing a circular economy in which garments are worn more frequently, are designed to be reused, and are created from safe, recycled, or renewable materials.

  • Ten ways to create a unique ‘Persona’ for your jeans..

Want your jeans to reflect your unique personality ? For those denim maniacs who want their jeans to look their second persona, check out these tips from Fashion Idie

    1. Avoid washing your jeans – jeans should not be washed too much- it washes away the unique patterns that are being developed on the jeans.
    2. Don’t be scared to get dirty
    3. Sleep in your jeans! – Though not very comfortable , it will  result in forming stronger creases on the jeans.
    4. Sweat is  good– let the sweat loosen the fabric of your jeans.
    5. Basic dark colored and unwashed jeans – It would be better if you take darker indigo denim with little or no wash so that there is a plenty of room for denim effects to take place.
    6. Let defects happen naturally – don’t create cuts or defects yourself. Let them happen as you wear the jeans..Trekking, playing football etc might be  good ideas to expedite the defects on your jeans.
    7. Wear them in the shower– or even swim in them .. Lets jeans resize more to your shape.
    8. Dry them in shade and turned inside out – prevents undue color loss.
    9. Wear them as often as possible-The more you wear, the faster the effects get ingrained onto your jeans.
    10. And if you still don’t get the desired results in a year (yes, it takes that much time), just distress them!
  • Japanese denim specialities explained by a denim expert-video

Gordon Heffner is the owner of the Denim shop Blue in Green in New York. This shop is one of the best shops in the world for buying Japanese denims.
In an interview to Tokyo Eye, Gordon tells about some specialities of the jeans from Japan and takes us through a tour of Tokyo denim market.
    Some highlights of the video:

    1. Have a look at Green tea dyed, Persimmon dyed or even MUD dyed jeans . Sugarcane denim made from 50% sugarcane extract is also interesting.
    2. Distressing of jeans: Can you age your jeans without destroying the fabric a little ? The normal techniques used for ageing the jeans are with sandblasting or sandpaper scrubbing. However, there are some solutions available which can age the jeans without affecting the fabric.
    3. Vintage Jeans: Can anyone spend upto 3 years to recreate a vintage a tattered 150 years old jeans? Some denim maniacs in Japan do
  • Japanese denim – Environment friendly jeans manufacturing attempts

Japan Fashion Week recently concluded in Tokyo.
Besides the usual show, there was an exhibition on the denim industry in Japan – Japan Blue.
The highlight of this exhibiton was that the Japanese denim industry is working on various ways to make the entire Denim/Jeans manufacturing process as environment friendly as possible.Denim fabric manufacturer Nisshinbo is using discarded banana stocks in its fabrics .Manufacturer Nihonmenpu is producing items dyed with natural mulberry lavender.See the photo below (left one is Nisshinbo fabrics and right ones are Nihonmenpu fabrics).

There is also a very interesting attempt to reduce the water required to produce Jeans. One pair of Jeans supposedly takes around 200 litres of water to be produced . With billions of jeans produced around the world, a huge amount of water is used to manufacture jeans and the wastage is then released into the rivers and hence oceans. A Japanese company Howa is working on a technology to wash down the Jeans using OZONE and not water. It displayed the results from its experiments and here are some photographs. If this company succeeds in making this process commercially viable, it has huge implications for the denim industry. Not only will it has the possibility to reduce the water consumption for Jeans production drastically, but it can also help in denim/jeans manufacturing units to be put up in place where water is scarce.See here jeans washed by this method.

  • Levi’s India adjust pricing strategy

Levi’s India plans to vacate the middle price segment and concentrate on the lower and the higher ends. Its Signature brand – which is the value offering – will see a further fall in price and start at Rs 900 instead of Rs 1000(USD 22 instead of USD 24 approx.). On the other hand, the premium segment will see an increase of about 15% in average pricing and increase to about Rs 2400(about USD 58). The report by Economic Times also mentions that in the next six months, the company will roll out its high-fashion, high-end brand Levi Rivet nationally.
The company is also planning to increase its adspend significantly during the next few months as it sees a slowdown and counts on its advertising to perk up the sales and take an increasing share in the 10 million value jeans and about 3 million premium jeans market in India.
Levi’s has been continously moving in the direction of vacating the mid-priced segement – as I mentioned in a previous post also and probably this is a sign of times to come for many large denim labels. The mid-priced segment of the Jeans is experiencing the miniumum growth and its share is being taken up by local brands who are more adaptable to local conditions (in India brands like Spykar,Killer etc)

  • White Denim Jeans – Cool Summers or Hot Winters product?

White denim jeans seem to have been taken up by almost all well known brands and most of them have postioned it as a premium product. The reason is that today’s fashion fore-minded consumer is practically indoors and in climate-controlled environments so much that there’s less of an urge for bulky clothing that can only be worn during wintry months. This increases the acceptance of white denim as not only a summer product . Apart from it , white denim is very versatile and can have a fresh summer appearance or a very rich autumn appearance.
““White denim is so versatile; it can have a fresh nautical look or a very rich appearance. It is one of those pants that can be taken from a casual day at the beach to a cocktail party effortlessly,” says Jerome Dahan, a designer and owner of Citizens of Humanity”

As Fabricofourlives.com rightly mentions “The versatility of white denim can be easily noted as its stand out attribute. It can effortlessly be dressed up or down; making the transition from day-to-night looks a cinch. White denim jeans, in particular, can be worn almost everywhere, even in the office. With white denim, you get such a crisp, rich appearance that it tends to look dressier and more distinguished than regular denim often does”

  • Men’s Jeans experience fall in imports into US – 6.82% in 2007

As Compared to 2006 , the imports of Men’s Jeans into US has fallen 6.82% from 293 million pieces to about 273 million pieces in 2007.
The fall was consistent through the various quarters of 2007(as I mentioned last year) . The table below shows the figures of imports from various countries
IMPORTS OF MEN’S JEANS INTO USA (IN 2007) FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

    Country

    Country Million Pcs Percentage Share
    Mexico 97.71 35.66
    Bangladesh 24.04 8.77
    Pakistan 15.02 5.48
    Honduras 14.35 5.23
    China 13.32 4.86
    Egypt 12.79 4.66
    Cambodia 11.88 4.33
    Costa Rica 11.79 4.30
    Lesotho 9.90 3.61
    Hongkong 6.54 2.38
    Nicaragua 6.31 2.30
    Guatemala 5.47 1.99
    India 1.84 0.67
    Jordan 1.57 0.57

Total Imports of Mens Jeans in 2007:: 273.93 million pcs
    Source:US Customs

Some points are worth noting from the table:
a)Mexico still retains its position as number 1 exporter despite falling share. But that is expected to fall.
b)China is yet to make a significant mark in the US men’s jeans market.Though it will definitely.
c)Bangladesh has continued to make progress and has aquired a sizeable 9% share of the market.
However, its neighbour India still has an insignificant share of 0.67% and it shows that India is absolutely uncompetitive in Men’s Jeans.
d)Small countries like Lesotho have made great use of Sub-saharan treaties to increase exports to US
e)Egypt has gained a great share at the cost of Jordan due to benefits extended to it. Jordan has lost the share due to its rising costs. This is continue to grow and more and more of factories are expected to shift to Egypt.

The fall in the jeans imports is perhaps consistent with the fall in growth rate of denim consumption..

  • Search Denim jobs, brands, buyers, blog and forum posts etc

What do you do when :

a)You need to find about Denim brands or
b)You need to find Denim buyers to sell your fabric and garments or
c)You need to study about the Trends in Denim or
d)You need a job related to Denim in(say) New York or Delhi or
e)You have any other denim related queries..
f)You need to buy a particular style of a jeans brand but do not know where to buy from.

Well, for me, I used to go to Google and hope to find some answer. Or I would to visit some denim forums or blogs and try to search them individually. By the time I would find any answer, I would be totally exhausted and probably give up many times..

As I earlier mentioned, it seems to be much easier to SEARCH ANYTHING ON DENIM ..
Just visit the at Denim Search Engine . I use it regularly for searching various denim related articles and I thought it might come in handy to others as well..This engine SEARCHES ONLY DENIM RELATED WEBPAGES

How do I use this Search Engine ?

a)To find which Denim Brands(well known) has created Color Jeans,I would just
make a search ‘Color’ and click on ‘DENIM BRANDS’ label in the search results
and I would know that the brands that have come out with color denims.

b)If I need to find a job in New York for a denim designer, I would just search ‘NewYork Designer’ and in the search result, I would CLICK on ‘DENIM JOBS’ label and instantly get this list of denim jobs in USA.
c)Buyers –Since nobody employed me 🙂 , I decided to export some denims to USA and searched ‘USA’ and in the search results, I clicked on ‘DENIM BUYERS’ and I found a long list of buyers (on various sites) who had current enquiries on denim.
d)Recent articles : I sometimes need to know what kind of posts people are making about various brand names. But it is difficult to find in reverse order – the date of posts . Now, suppose in this engine, I search for ‘DVB’..In the search results, I click on ‘RECENT4) and I get the latest posts related to DVB brand. It kind of enables one to keep track of what people are saying about your brand. Also I can check out if some top news sites have made a mention regarding DVB and I click on the label ‘TOP NEWS SITES’ and I find that Reuters had a news item on them recently.
e)Denim Blogs : It is interesting to search any term and then click on ‘DENIM BLOGS’ label in the search results. It gives an idea what top denim bloggers (including myself 🙂 ) think about that search term..No need now to search all these different blogs to find any relevant articles.

Now the Denim Search Engine Search box is available right here on our site. On the right panel, you willl see the search box . Just make any search on Denim and use the Labels like ‘Denim Blogs’, ‘Buy Jeans’ etc to refine the results.

  • Evisu Spring Summer ’09 Collection

Evisu Deluxe Spring Summer ’09 collection follows the first voyage of a Japanese ship sailing to America (in 1860).It draws from the historical references of the time and tries to combine the best of Japanese and American tailoring..As the Evisu blog mentions, the ‘tailoring is inspired by the naval details such as shaped patch pockets,a high buttoning reefer jacket, sailor collars and wide legged cuffed trousers’ .
The denim collection is also inspired by the LEE brand(H.D Lee company was founded in 1889). The collection uses a newly developed selvedge denims including No.13LEFT- a Japanese woven reproduction of the denim fabrics used by LEE 1910s onwards.Jeans cut from 13LEFT denim have the leather patch sewn on the left side of the waistband.

Sea Washed(!) : The jeans have been hand washed in the sea and dried on the rocks nearby. This means that the washing effects will be subtle and denim will be hard (no chemicals to soften the denim are used).’Whiskering’ and ‘honeycombing’ will come with time as the jeans wears out..Exclusive tailoring is used whereby each jeans is tailored by a single operator who signs each completed pair(if I am correct -Earnest Sewn also uses such tailoring techniques to ensure quality).
The overall effect of all the above mentioned techniques would probably give a clean ,natural looking jeans with somewhat trouser looks. Here is a Evisu’s SS09 Milan Spring Summer Video
