The 1st quarter of the year 2018 ended on March, reported a total import of 14.57 million sq meters of denim fabrics out of which 97% fabrics were imported from following 7 countries which include Turkey, Pakistan, and Morocco. Turkey and Pakistan are the two major exporting countries to the EU which accounted for over 50%in the total imports made during the aforesaid period.
Turkey’s share in the total import was 41.54% with a quantity of 6.05 million sq meter at an average price of Euro 2.99 per sq mtr . Pakistan’s share was 20.24% and the quantity exported was 2.94 million sq meter at an average price of Euro 1.54.
Surprisingly, the EU imported the fabric from Pakistan & India at the least average price of Euro 1.54/sq meter. Japan turned out to be the most expensive exporters which supplied fabric at an average price of Euro 8.12/sq meter. Inspite of high price, Japan exported a good quantity of over 300,000 sq mtrs to EU during this period.

JAN-MARCH 2019
The 1st quarter of the year 2019 ended on March, reported a total import of 13.17 million sq meters of denim fabrics which is approx 10% lesser than last year’s 1st quarter ended on March’18.
Out of 13.17 million sqm, 75% of fabrics were imported from Turkey, Pakistan, and Morocco which account for 34.63%, 30.07% and 10.26% share in the total imports made during the 1st quarter.
The EU imported the fabric from India at the least average price of Euro 1.48/sq meter and at an average price of Euro 8.10/sqm, Japan is the most expensive exporter

Jan-March’18 V. Jan-March’19 (Quantity)
The 1st quarter witnessed a fall of 10% in the total imports of fabrics which led to the further fall in the share of several countries in the exports over the period of one year, India is the biggest loser which lost 40% of its exports to the EU followed by Morocco and Turkey.
Pakistan and Egypt gained by 34% and 33% respectively, however, China maintained the growth of only 7% even after too many odds.

Average Price of Turkey saw an increase of 4.33 %, Egypt had an increase of 5.40 % however Pakistan and India witnessed a fall in their average prices by 2.08% and 3.61% respectively.

Looking at the above report , we can come to the conclusion that the imports of denim fabrics into EU is on a declining trend. Pakistan is the only country (and to a lesser extent – China) , which has increased its share of exports of denim fabrics to EU. All other major exporters have lost their shares. This trend might continue during the full year 2019 as well.
