Calik Denim, one of the leading premium denim manufacturers in the world and is included among the top 200 exporters in Turkey. It has been focused on sustainability , the company has received a variety of international certificates such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Organic Content Standard (OCS), Oeko-Tex, RCS, Nordic Swan, Eco Label, EU Ecolabel and Global Recycle Standard (GRS). In addition, since 2016, the company has also been included in the Turkish Turquality Support Program, the only program by which companies that have competitive advantages and branding potential are supported by the government. Recently , they released their 2019 sustainability report with targets for 2025 . We spoke to Tolga Ozkurt, Deputy General Manager of Sales and Marketing regarding the same .

Q.Among your 2025 sustainability goals, which do you think is the most important?

At Calik Denim, we are aware of the responsibility of corporations to the world. Therefore we, as one of the leading premium denim manufacturers in the world, aim to maximize our accountability and transparency towards our operations. Also, the fact that the industry is being faced with global environmental and social change, shapes our path for future. We consider this change as a challenge that allows risks to turn into opportunities and as a reason for us to manage the impact of denim on life, create positive value for and deliver benefits to its stakeholders. Therefore, our sustainability strategy has been defined as Passion for Denim Passion for Life, focusing on the purpose of making a positive impact for a better life. We are truly encouraged by the passion for denim and passion for life to become the leading denim brand that triggers the sustainability-driven transformation in the industry.

    2025 TARGETS

    Calik1

As a leading denim company, we set to achieve its purpose of making a positive impact for a better life by leading innovative products, creating positive impact for/ with our stakeholders and by reducing our impact on environment. Under our strategy, we defined 2025 Sustainability Targets under 4 main titles: Environmental Sustainability, Sustainable Raw Material Procurement, Innovation and Thought Leadership, Internal and External Stakeholder Rights.

In accordance with our vision, the most important issue we tackle with is environmental sustainability, about which we put much effort to improve. Living in an era where climate crisis drastically affects deeply the communities and environment urges us to take action to minimize our impact on the climate change.

Under environmental sustainability title, we identified 4 targets that are related to each other:

    • Reducing carbon emissions per unit production by 20%,
    • 100% increase in the power generated from renewable resources as compared to 2018,
    • Reducing water consumption per unit production by 30%
    • Lastly reducing wastes emerging from production processes by 30%.

Considering the fact that global textile industry causes the production of emission at 1.2 billion tons emissions of CO2 every year, we prioritize our first target “reducing carbon emissions per unit production by 20% until 2025”. While governments take action to reduce carbon emissions in accordance with the Paris Agreement or the European Green Deal, we, as a business world, must also play a key role by increasing R&D investments and focus on innovative technologies that would reduce carbon emissions. We are developing innovative and sustainable products and technologies focusing on energy efficiency and reducing environmental footprint to contribute fighting against climate crisis.

    calik2

    Q. Water saving is such an important goal. But do you think there can be a uniform way to measure its usage?

Among our other targets, we also find water management crucial for a sustainable future and sustainable industrial growth because textile industry is one of the industries that use natural resources, especially water, extensively. However, we believe that there are innovative solutions to minimize the waste and consumption of water and still pursue our Passion for Denim. By using technology and innovation, we are committed to improve the efficiency of our operations.

Among our several innovative solutions, Washpro Technology is Calik’s latest sustainability-driven innovation that aims to reduce the environmental impact throughout the denim lifecycle. The new Washpro technology promises long-lasting freshness for garments thanks to Calik’s new fibre innovations. With Washpro technology, end-users are required to wash their jeans less throughout the denim garments life cycle. It’s well known that each home laundry requires a lot of water and energy, so Washpro featured fabrics provide significant saving of resources – a perfect remedy for new generation eco conscious consumers who are looking for products with greater intention and longevity.

Other concept that we are proud of to develop is Oxygene. With the Oxygene concept, we are able to create awareness in the sector by ensuring that its customers make sustainable production with the concept developed. On the other hand, customer satisfaction increases with superior ozone washing effects, stone washing effects in a shorter time, bright look and clear tones, fabrics with a light touch. Thanks to the Oxygene concept, 95% less water, 50% less chemicals and 79% less energy is used during the washing stage.

At Calik Denim, the water intensity per product has been reduced by 11% in 2019 compared to 2017. With new investments to be made, it is aimed to reduce the water intensity by 30% by 2025.

    calik4

    Q. Can you explain your Denethic and D Clear concepts.

    calik6

We care about water resources and develop innovative and sustainable technologies for denim manufacturing. Denethic is a product concept we have developed with a sustainable approach for the whole supply chain of a denim garment – manufacture with its important contribution to sustain our environment and our planet consciously and with responsibility. With the Denethic concept, the need to wash jeans after sewing is eliminated and this technology provides fabrics with a washed look. Denethic allows us and our customers to reduce water consumption. While we save water by 44% for rinse look, 15% for rinse enzyme look and 32% for bleached look at mill, our customers use Denethic fabrics ready to cut and sew without washing.

D-Clear technology of Calik Denim offers considerable saving values for both indigo / sulphur dyeing and finishing steps of production. The technology allows us to use 40% less water during the initial indigo dyeing and 83% less water during the finishing of denim and decrease the chemical use by 94%. We used D-Clear technology in 10% of our 2020-21 Fall- Winter collection and we aim raise it to 50% by 2020 and 100% by 2025.

    Q. Do you think Covid has given a stronger push towards sustainability?

Covid-19 crisis has changed many aspects in our lives. Businesses and economies got damaged, as the crisis had its reflections on many systems other than health systems. Businesses were forced to slow down and most of the world has faced a drastic recession. According to the survey of Sustainable Apparel Coalition, 1/3 of the member brands were unprepared to such a crisis, which shows the importance of sustainability and risk management for corporations. Besides, it is estimated that revenues for the apparel and footwear sectors will contact by 27 to 30 percent in 2020.

We believe that prioritizing sustainability is what allows a company to survive from such a period. Companies that were already prioritizing are able to recovery easier now. Despite its importance, most of the companies prioritized to solve short- term problems that Covid-19 has brought with survival instincts. However, the companies with long term goals may integrate sustainability into their practices, because it will make them more resilient and allow them to adopt quickly to new challenges.

Besides the awakening of business, the awareness towards sustainability from the demand-consumer side has also risen. People facing with such a drastic crisis recognized the negative impact of unsustainable practices, including the unjust relation between the nature and human beings. The consumers are expected to prefer companies with sustainability practices more. With suppliers moving into “survival mode”, workers in some of the poorest countries face unemployment and risk of poverty and hunger. Applying human-centered practices in this time of crisis while also sustaining the businesses will influence many and shape the consumer behavior, which will determine the future of the companies.

At Calik Denim, in terms of quick solutions during this time, focusing on virtual operations and keeping the communication sustained with customers is crucial and it was one of our first responses to the crisis. We directly reach our customers and suppliers or reach through our representatives in respective countries. We have shaped our strategy in accordance with country-specific conditions and restrictions. We localized our decisions and connections in this sense. In addition, we were able to turn our mobile application into a more useful tool during this period. It was our chance to have such a mobile technology, which we activated even more. Our mobile application was used for sample requests and we have created another module in which we uploaded our video for the exhibition and started a blog with a group of 4 prominent bloggers and editors who will write weekly on our industry. In new era, adopting strategies that embrace digital solutions and sustainability is key in building more resilience for the industry.

The company has , apart from the above, come out with various initiatives related to chemical management, waste management, climate change and energy .

Calik Denim Completes 30 Years | A Talk With Hamit Yenici

Çalık Denim, the globally well known denim mill,  marks its 30th anniversary this year. The company launched its #DenimLovesArt project bringing 30 designers from across the world and providing them the all the means to create an Artful Collection. Denimsandjeans wanted to understand the thought behind this project and also to understand how is the company making a difference to the industry and looks to its and the industry’s future. We spoke to the Mr Hamit Yenici – the General Manager at the company to understand more about the vision and mission .

    1.  We understand Calik  is inviting 30 Designers from different parts of globe for a project. Can you explain about this project and what Calik aims to achieve with it ?

As we approached our 30th anniversary we wanted to create a special project inspired by denim’s ubiquitous nature in both fashion but also across so many different aspects of our lives. And as a youthful and innovative brand with a passion for denim, we also wanted to celebrate and support upcoming young talent in the industry – hence how the idea for our “Denim Loves Art” exhibition came into being. Collaborating with 30 young talented international designers seemed the perfect way to celebrate 30 years.

To mark our three decades of Çalık Denim, we started by inviting young designers from around the world to create their own unique denim-inspired artworks for our three international exhibitions in Istanbul, Amsterdam and LA. We had a lot of designers interested in submitting projects from an array of leading design schools such as Parsons, AMFI, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, FIDM and Hannover University. As we had so much interest, the 30 projects for the exhibition were selected by our international jury, namely Dio Kurazawa, Lucia Rosin and myself. An important part of the project for us was being able to support the designers throughout the whole process – by providing the fabrics, support for their production of the art works and their travel to the three events.

The final 30 denim creations are really outstanding – each piece is so unique and creative, reflecting all the different places and cultures that the designers come from around the world. We feel really proud to have collaborated with such talented young people and their work highlights just how much denim is interwoven into every aspect of our lives because as well as clothing, we had a variety of submissions including denim furniture, accessories, shoes, bags and rugs. The Denim Loves Art exhibition first opened to great acclaim in Istanbul on 11th October. We then moved onto Amsterdam, where we collaborated with Kingpins, on 25th and 26th October – and we will be now be relocating to the USA for the finale of these three special events celebrating Calik Denim’s 30th anniversary in Los Angeles on 6th December 2017.

    2. As Calik Denim is celebrating its 30th Year, How do you see ,as an organisation its journey till date ?

At 30 years, we feel proud to have built one of the world’s leading denim producing brands – one that is both innovative and dynamic but also deep-rooted and socially and environmentally responsible. It’s been a real journey from our beginnings in Turkey supplying the domestic market in the 1980s when it was virtually impossible to find any blue jeans in the country; to today becoming a global leader of premium denim exporting to the world’s most prestigious denim brands in more than 40 countries. At the heart of our journey and its success is a combination of a really outstanding young and dynamic team, the power of technology and being committed to investing in our future over the years.

Our 30th anniversary milestone is also a chance for us to look forward to the next 30 years – and so it was the perfect time for us to launch a new brand identity that really gets to the essence of who we are. It’s the result of our collaboration with a marketing company and detailed research into the views of the Çalık Denim team, suppliers, customers and key players in the industry – to really define our DNA, who we are and what’s important to us – which is to always be striving for better, to spearhead innovation and creating a better future for all. That’s how we arrived at our new motto “Ever Evolving”.

Indeed, throughout our 30 years in the denim sector, we have pioneered many world–first high-tech fabrics with our innovations in production technology:

High resistance denim fabrics, Retina (the application of warp thread coating), Natural Antibiotic denim fabric (the integration of Aloe Vera micro beads), Outlast Denim (with a Thermo-climatic effect), Elastech and Oxygene technologies. As we continue on our journey we’ll be “Ever Evolving” with every step that we take, striving always to innovate for better.

    3. Turkish companies have been producing the best denim fabric in the world and out of many reputed denim mills including Calik, ISKO, Orta, Bossa.  Denim carries its own unique identity , what makes you different from others ?

We believe we are the leaders in terms of innovation. As our new brand image attests to, we are always innovating with both technology and our work processes to help our clients grow further and really stand out with their products. We believe that as we stride into the future we will continue to make further gains with our new strong global Çalık Denim brand and a work model that aims always to innovate for better.

    4. What are the future plans of Calik Denim , in terms of Capacities, client focus,  expansion and Technological Advancements.

We now have ever greater capacity as a result of our $120m investment over the past seven years. As we look to the future we will be looking to increase our capacity even further to 60m metres with another $120m investment between 2018 and 2021. As we mentioned, we currently export to 40 countries, with our main markets being the USA and Europe. With our increased capacity and continued innovations and added value. One of our key aims in the long term is to grow our market share in the Far East.

As well as focussing on innovation, we also highly value the partnerships we have and what they mean for our brand. It’s important that the end-consumer also gets a sense of the “Çalık Denim” mark of quality with our innovative and hi-tech denim products. That’s why we’re also developing several partnerships with international brands and with fashion and design schools. In the long term our goal is for the consumer to want their jeans produced with Çalık Denim fabric; as well as for design student to be familiar with the Çalık Denim brand when they graduate so that they choose to work with our fabrics as they develop their careers.

    5. Apart from US and EU do you see any region which is important for you as a premium denim mill ?

As well as America and Europe, we believe East Asia is one of the most important regions in the world for premium denim production – in part due to its size and interest in fashion, with Japan having a special place as a global trendsetter; but also due to the brands and producers that already exist there.

    6. We understand you have initiated several steps for sustainability. Do you really think they help you in reaching out to new customers and cover the additional costs. Do explain something about these initiatives.

From the very first day of setting up Çalık Denim, corporate responsibility and ethical values have been an integral part of who we are and what we do. Our aim is to be a company that adds value to economic, environmental and social realms with our sustainable approach and thus we carry out an array of activities and investments in the field of sustainable development in both the national and international arenas. We are receptive to the needs and priorities of our internal and external stakeholders and provide an environment that is respectful of the rights and thoughts of everyone in our team.

In terms of specific actions, we as Çalık Denim work hard to reduce our environmental impact at every stage of the production process, from the collection of raw materials to the production, distribution and recycling, to which our international certificates in this field attest to. We are constantly monitoring and evaluating all aspects of our business, to foresee and prevent any negative effects on our staff, clients or the society at large – including assessing and managing any possible environmental risks through our advanced R&D, system improvements and product development programs.

We’re also working hard to develop sustainable products for our clients and the customer. With our new more environmentally friendly production processes we use fewer resources and we have been able to create new product lines that have created new demand as well as garnering a lot of interest from sustainable and mainstream fashion brands. For instance, our Oxygene concept launched a new era in sustainability in the sector as we use less energy and water, fewer chemicals and it takes less time to produce – thus significantly reducing its environmental impact. We are proud of the impact not only we have had within our company and sector but also the wider industry as many textile and clothing producers are now following our lead and investing in sustainable methods. In addition we will be publishing our first standalone CSR report in the first quarter of 2018.

  • Calik Denim at Munich Fabric Start | FW15-16

At the recently held Munich Fabric Start fair, the Turkish denim company Calik presented some innovative fabrics specially designed for the German market at the Bluezone. Soft handles become one of the distinct features of the AW 15-16 collection. Based on the special requirements and tastes of the German consumers, all colored denims and indigo denims have very soft, almost caressing, cotton like touch thanks to a special R&D process developed by the Calik team and strong dimensional stability also.

Stay-dark and Stay-black colored fabrics maintain a true denim look and colors can keep their performance up to 40 home washes. In the 100% modal denims, colored modals add novelty to the group in terms of color performance and soft handles.

Other features of the new AW15-16 focus on the following themes:

    1. A color story: Indian Blue

    a. Calik Denim introduces new shades of indigo for the AW14-15 season: Nippon Blue is an almost black, very dark shade of pure indigo, that can be washed down easily for bright and clear contrasts or can be used raw for customized, personal indigo shades. Smokey Blue is a blue grey shade of indigo that washes down to nice blue and when bleached becomes baby blue.

    Calik Nippon Blue Denim

    2. An advanced comfort story: Easy Mode

    a. High performance and ease of move in fancy structures where denim look meets second skin property in the same product. Fancy weaves, broken twills and double face denims in high elasticity and super soft handles maintain an excellent growth and provide fashion and comfort. Swan, Manas and Dharma are striking examples of this concept.

    3. A superstretch story: Fix-Fit

    a. In the popular FixFit collection of super stretch and power stretch denims, Calik introduces modal denims in stay-black and stay-blue colors for ultimate comfort, softness, color performance and fit retention. One of the striking features of the new collection is the natural softness of the denims thanks to special processes developed by the in-house R&D team resulting in softness without chemicals. Use of advanced fiber technology such as DualFx and Sorona all provide improved and stabilized recoveries of these highly elastic denims with an elasticity range of 50-85%. Overall, this season’s FixFit denims offered by Calik combine body shaping, natural softness and feeling luxurious. Wider widths offered provide an additional benefit. Alex and Valdez are two interesting families developed especially for the German market bearing the entirespecial features above.

    4. A sustainable denims story: Botanical Sense

    a. Calik Denim continues with Botanical Sense, the sustainable collection and this season, introduces denims with recycled polyester and Crailar flax in addition to the existing organic cotton, recycled cotton, BCI cotton and natural fiber denims range. Crailar flax is a high performance fiber that requires much less water and chemicals during growth, and has remarkable dimensional stability, moisture wicking property and strong dye uptake, making it a very good replacement for cotton. Additionally, Crailar fiber has irregular slubs for more authentic and natural looks. As for the use of recycled pes, one meter of fabric contains 7 big bottles, adding meaning and fashion to the denim fabric.

    b. Calik is in an exclusive colloboration with Crailar Flax for developing denims made from this sustainable new fiber. As stated by Crailar;

“Based on forecasted population growth, the global demand for cotton will double by 2030. But there is simply not enough water or land for cotton alone to accommodate that order of growth, leaving a gap of 22 million tons or more. Man-made cellulosic fibers, such as viscose, as well as synthetic fibers can help narrow that gap but, in the case of synthetics, production depletes precious natural resources such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas.

Still, studies have shown that consumers overwhelmingly prefer to wear natural fibers. According to Cotton Inc.’s 2011 Lifestyle Monitor™ Survey, 76 percent of consumers say that their favorite fibers to wear are either all-natural or all-natural blends. Taken together, that clear consumer preference, diminishing resources for cultivating cotton, and synthetic fibers’ dependence on petrochemicals translate to an enormous opportunity for non-cotton natural fibers.”

    Calik Denim CrailarFlax

Further, Crailar Flax requires 99% less water than cotton, and fabrics made from Crailar are soft as cotton, with better wicking properties, less shrinkage and stronger in terms of durability. The enhanced dye uptake property of the fiber allows for use of less indigo to achieve the comparably same result in look as in denim, but with much less chemicals.

  • Calik Denim Aw’ 15/16 Collection

Calik (Turkey) came out with their latest AW’15/16 collection at Denim by PV , Barcelona. The main component of this collection was a range called DENIM SCIENCE.  Denim Science by Calik is a range of performance denim fabrics. Outlast is a technology developed initially for NASA to protect astronauts from extreme thermal changes, and Calik  claims it is one of the first denim weavers to use this technology.

UHMwPE is the world’s strongest fiber, 15 times stronger than steel, lighter than water and extremely durable. While protecting against cuts, abrasions, tears, punctures and slashes, the fiber is light, thin and flexible as well as with a high level of heat conduction.

Miyabi is a recent development by Mitsubishi Rayonand and is  used by Calik in this collection to create fabrics that are soft, smooth, comfortable to wear while keeping warm with anti-pilling attribute.
