  • AW13 Evisu Collection

Evisu Fall Winter 2013 denim collection collage

Japanese denim specialist EVISU infuses core elements of traditional Japanese denim wear with modern touches to create its  2013 Autumn Winter Collection. The collection is presented in a series of advertisements shot across multiple locations in Tokyo that best capture the spirit and style of the brand.

    EVISU Private Stock Collection

Traditional Japanese denim wear is at the core of the EVISU brand and the EVISU Private Stock collection, the brand’s flagship line, showcases the essence of Japanese culture at superlative levels of quality and craftsmanship. The entire collection is crafted in Okayama, Japan, the home of Japanese denim. Using sophisticated, specially crafted looming machines, the premium quality unsanforized selvedge denim, KIBATA, undergoes more than 30 steps to dye it the famous indigo blue color. A handful of recognized master craftsmen then hand paint the EVISU Seagull logo on the back pockets in separate layers. These  jeans are an example of  Japanese commitment to perfectionist  craftsmanship.

    EVISU Heritage Collection

“Classic with a Twist” underpins the design direction of the EVISU Heritage collection. Fusing new-age design elements with traditional denim wear, the collection offers a sophisticated and stylish look. This season EVISU integrates the ever-popular camouflage print and other outdoor gear elements into the collection, which makes the pieces easy to complement with a variety of styles, offering a different and more mature side to denim wear.

    EVISU Genes Collection

The stylish EVISU Genes collection is a core line within the EVISU brand. It stands out from the other collections by being designed specially for the street. This new-age, pop-colored denim package is inspired by Tokyo’s unbridled buzz and presents the fun-loving face of Japan to the world. Suitable for all ages, the collection features elements such as patchwork and colorful prints that are used to update classic designs such as MA-1 and varsity jackets. The bright color palette for slim and skinny denim adds a more modern touch to the entire collection.

    Women’s Collection

Denim may highlight the masculinity of men, but it has the opposite effect on women. A slim silhouette of denim showcases feminine curves, while the right pair of shorts can bring attention to a woman’s youthful vitality.  Evisu tries to pep this up !

    image

Evisu has always been a little different from most other denim brands using motifs and paintings as an integreal part of their denim jeans . Of course , it does not appeal to all , but there are some die hard fans of the brand – though the brand is nowhere near its peak of popularity in early 2000’s

About :Evisu or Evisu Genes is a Japanese designer clothing company that specializes in producing premium denim wear through traditional, labor-intensive methods. It is a premium denim brand founded in 1991 in Osaka Japan, named after the Japanese god of prosperity.EVISU was considered  the first true collectible denim brand in the world, introducing casual denim wearers across the globe to connoisseur-quality Japanese selvedge denim and custom distressing.

In 1991, YAMANE HIDEHIKO founded EVISU in Osaka Japan. YAMANE was trained as a tailor but his love for vintage jeans and his disappointment with the mass-produced modern version led him firstly to the vintage clothing import business and then, revolutionarily, to start putting together the elements required reproducing vintage-style jeans. This needed the gathering together of all the various bits of machinery, none of which had been produced for the last 40 years, which are required to make authentic vintage jeans. The initial production line allowed about 14 pairs of jeans a day to be produced and each of them was lovingly hand-painted with the now famous seagull logo by YAMANE himself.

  • Evisu Spring and Fall 2009 Heritage collection –Green cast, Red cast & more..

In last couple of years Evisu seemed to have been losing some reputation among international denim buyers because of  too many flashy artifacts on the back pockets and for lacking subtelity. However, there is still lot of love among its dedicated consumers in Japan and Evisu seems determined to get much more of international attention and customers with its new heritage releases. Also it has to be remembered that Evisu is still one the best producers of Selvedge denim in the world.
Evisu is releasing a set of  5 Heritage Denims for Spring and Fall 2009 . Each of them stays true to the traditional Japanese denim dyeing methods . The set includes both green cast and Red Cast denim.

    NO.1 SPECIAL

No1Special is unsanforized japanese selvage denim woven by Kaihara Corps Ltd. Unsanforized denim is the most authentic cloth, as used on the very earliest jeans. It has a slightly hairy surface and the warp and weft yarns are quite loose. When washed for the first time, the denim will shrink because it is not sanforized. Another effect would be that the legs would skew. Though highly undesirable to many users, skewing is  a sign of  Vintage Jeans (remember they did not have sanforizing facilities in the 19th century. The process  was invented in 1933 by Sanford Cluett). Buyer has to hot soak the jeans before wearing and they will get to the size he is looking for .

    NO. 2

This denim is identical to No1Special, but sanforized – which means that the jeans will not shrink unduly and will hardly have any  hair on the surface.Woven in Osaka Japan on half-width shuttle looms with signature pink selvage. No2 is a mid-to heavy-weight 13.7 oz denim and has a deep blue tone with a very slight red cast.
    NO. 3

No3 is the original famous Evisu Heritage selvage denim, previously known as D85. It is rope dyed with indigo to an extremely deep blue, almost black tone. No3 can be recognized by the unusual ‘rising’ sun red and white selvage
    NO. 4

No4 is something different developed for the  Evisu Heritage Spring 2009 collection. The denim is woven from open-end yarn, as against Ring spun traditionally used by Evisu. Open-end yarn denim has a smoother, flatter surface than ring-spun denim. Like all Evisu Heritage denim, No.4 is woven on half-width shuttle looms.
    NO13

And if you are looking for softer denim, then No13Left is the one to go for because of its Left hand twill weave . It  is a close reproduction of the early denim used by Lee from the 1910s onwards. Left hand twill denim has a twill direction opposite to the right hand twill and is softer because the direction of the fibres aligns with the direction of the twill. No13Left is green caste indigo, and has mismatched selvage: one side is plain white, and the other side has a single warp thread of indigo woven into it, staying true to the specifications of the original Lee version.

  • Evisu Spring Summer ’09 Collection

Evisu Deluxe Spring Summer ’09 collection follows the first voyage of a Japanese ship sailing to America (in 1860).It draws from the historical references of the time and tries to combine the best of Japanese and American tailoring..As the Evisu blog mentions, the ‘tailoring is inspired by the naval details such as shaped patch pockets,a high buttoning reefer jacket, sailor collars and wide legged cuffed trousers’ .
The denim collection is also inspired by the LEE brand(H.D Lee company was founded in 1889). The collection uses a newly developed selvedge denims including No.13LEFT- a Japanese woven reproduction of the denim fabrics used by LEE 1910s onwards.Jeans cut from 13LEFT denim have the leather patch sewn on the left side of the waistband.

Sea Washed(!) : The jeans have been hand washed in the sea and dried on the rocks nearby. This means that the washing effects will be subtle and denim will be hard (no chemicals to soften the denim are used).’Whiskering’ and ‘honeycombing’ will come with time as the jeans wears out..Exclusive tailoring is used whereby each jeans is tailored by a single operator who signs each completed pair(if I am correct -Earnest Sewn also uses such tailoring techniques to ensure quality).
The overall effect of all the above mentioned techniques would probably give a clean ,natural looking jeans with somewhat trouser looks. Here is a Evisu’s SS09 Milan Spring Summer Video

Evisu – the premium Japanese denim brand , is to open its first store in North America later this summer.
Evisu is quite popular and has sort of cult status in US and it was logical that they encash this status.
