Indian Denim Industry Is On Road To Cross 200 Million Meters Of Exports In 2019

Indian Denim Industry Is On Road To Cross 200 Million Meters Of Exports In 2019

The Indian denim fabric exports had been hovering around 200-250million sq mtrs in the last few years. However, if we consider similar exports during this year, the total figure may touch over 300 million sq mtrs this year. This is a good sign as the companies had started to be too dependent on local market . The over dependence had hindered their growth and also investments in research and development and new technologies. With increased export appetite, we may see changes in this direction. Besides the next frontier for the companies has to be vertical integration where they invest in downstream garment manufacturing. This trend is catching up to some extent but we have to see if it really does go strong.

    Resurgent India - July 17-18

  • Q&A Session With Mr Arvind Mathur, CEO Raymond Denim

Q&A Session With Mr Arvind Mathur, CEO Raymond Denim

Raymond Group is an Indian branded fabric and fashion retailer, incorporated in 1925. The group owns apparel brands like Raymond, Raymond Premium Apparel, Park Avenue, Park Avenue Woman, ColorPlus,Parx etc which are retailed in over 450 cities and towns in India. Besides, it produces suiting fabric, with a capacity of producing about 38 million meters of wool and wool-blended fabrics and over 47 million mtrs of denim.

    Arvind Mathur | Denimsandjeans.com

Raymond is one of the pioneers of denim in India commencing its first denim operation in 1996. Raymond UCO Denim is a 50-50 JV between Raymond and UCO NV of Belgium and is a globally renowned producer of denim fabrics and garments. We spoke to its CEO, Mr Arvind Mathur, to understand what makes the company tick and helps it retain its premium position for over 2 decades.>

Raymond has stood out as a premium denim supplier globally for about 2 decades now. What do you think is the recipe for your success?

Raymond pioneered the manufacture of Ring Denim in India in 1996, starting with a state-of-the-art highly versatile & flexible setup, in collaboration with an Italian partner. The company from its inception has been focused on supplying innovative fashion denim products through focus on best raw material, proactive adoption of latest technology, collaboration with world class suppliers & solution providers and retaining some of the best people in the industry. This allows us to hold an upper hand in innovation over other players in the market and maintain our premiumness.

How do you think the denim industry has changed in last 5 years?

Overall the market has become very competitive because of which we see retailers offering better quality denim at lower price points with more frequent changes in collections. In terms of fashion there has been a move from denim as comfort wear to athleisure with hyper elasticity and enhanced softness for comfort. This has also to some extent triggered higher growth in women and kids segments. On the global supply chain front there is growing bias in favour of full package suppliers with brands and retailers looking to reduce contact points, geographical spread and various other complexities of a more fragmented sourcing base. Sustainability has certainly taken center stage with increasing awareness and concerns about the environmental impact of a resource hungry denim industry. From cotton to yarn to fabric to garment, every area is being looked into.

As you said Sustainability is the keyword most brands are repeating nowadays. Do you think it is now becoming a mainstream focus for them. How is Raymond preparing itself to achieve sustainable targets of global brands?

Sustainability holds the future survival of the human race and the earth as we know it. The awareness about environmental issues amongst the consumers, NGOs, brands and suppliers is increasing by the day and everyone involved is  willing to contribute their bit to improving the situation. It is no longer a marketing gimmick but goes much much beyond. We use Blue Sign certified pre-reduced liquid Indigo. Improved processes allow cleaner production of denim with a positive impact on resource efficiency such as reduction of the sodium hydrosulfite usage by 60-70%, much cleaner water waste and less water usage. Also a major chunk of our cotton consumption is BCI (Better Cotton Initiative). We are a certified producer of PCW (Post Consumer Waste) cotton Denims in collaboration with I:Collect. Our product innovation is geared towards making optimal use of sustainable raw material and processes to further strengthen our sustainability credentials. In this regard we are working closely with both brands and suppliers of innovative material and machines.

What are the main focus areas of development for Raymonds apart from sustainability. How are you planning to differentiate yourselves from your competitors with your developments?

Apart from sustainability there are various other areas we are focusing on. Fabrics made from low torque yarns and super fine cottons to bring out an  enhanced soft hand feel is a good example. We have also developed products using value added special blends & speciality yarns in conjunction with balanced fabric construction for ultimate comfort. We will continue to surprise our customers with our super stretch and hyper flex products with excellent recovery properties.

Pl tell us about your latest collection for SS’20  What are the key products that you want to bring to the market .

The latest collection portrays unisex denims in diverse concepts/moods and majorly covers

    • A wide range of super-stretch denims (“FLUID” series) with super soft hand feel with ultimate comfort and free-movement through use of latest technology in spinning and weaving.

    • A range of Bi-stretch denims (“360 DEGREE”) exhibiting sense of freedom of movement to meet the needs of the modern urban consumer.

    • A collection of classic denim with a contemporary feel (our “VINTAGE” series) for the true denim connoisseur.  Salt & pepper look with diverse cast and colour that are bold enough to stand on their own

    • Eco friendly sustainable products ranging from our “LOW AQUA” range which considerably reduces water consumption during dyeing process to the Salt-free range (“PRISTINE” series) which completely eliminates use of hydrosulphite and brings down the load on effluent. The other highlight are products made from PCW cotton to decrease dependence on natural resources.

    6. Do you see that the current trend of Fast fashion will sustain for very long. In which direction you see the denim industry moving to in the next 5 years?

The trend towards speed and agility will continue to grow. The rise of fast fashion is steadily shifting the traditional bi-seasonal collections to multi-seasonal collections and this is not going to go away. Shortening supply chains are playing a key supporting role in this phenomena.

However, owing to sustainability issues such as over-consumption and waste generation, there has been a certain level of backlash and this is building up. Hence going forward, while we don’t see slowing down of fast fashion anytime soon, we do certainly expect the industry to take more stringent measures towards use of sustainable raw material and circular processes. It will have to play a pivotal role in curtailing & solving the problem collaboratively. This will drive the development and adoption of new technologies, materials and business models to make fast fashion much more environmentally efficient and sustainable.

High stretch is still very much a desired product. We do however see a shift back to a more comfort silhouette.
Fashion fit = high stretch, comfort fit = low to medium stretch. All the stretches have a soft touch either through mixed fibre blends or construction and finish and they all have great recovery achieved through the use of dual FX or spun polyester. Such stretch denims are gender neutral be they high stretch or comfort, playing to the variety of jean silhouettes. 360 ° stretch and vertical stretch whilst still offering close fit they offer different performance and enhancement of body shape.

  • India Denim Exports 2014

    India Denim Exports 2014

India has been exporting denim fabrics to various destinations around the world. The current capacity of Indian denim fabric manufacturing stands at over 1 billion mtrs p.a – though actual production quantities are lower due to various reasons. Major part of this production goes for domestic market or for domestic consumption for conversion into garments for export. However, there is also a good quantity which is being shipped directly in the fabric form to various countries around the world.

In this report from our data section, we will cover :

    a) The quantities that have been shipped by Indian companies to overseas markets in last 12 months – Oct’13 to Sept’14
    b) Average prices of such exports for all the four quarters.
    c) Most important 5 markets to which these exports are being made currently . An indepth look into the quantities being shipped to these markets and the trends thereof.
    d) Average prices of such exports to these markets.

We look below at the total quantities that have been shipped out by Indian companies out of India during the period Oct’13 to Sept’14

Total Exports of Denim Fabrics From India Oct’13 to Sept’14

    image

From the above data from our Data section , we can note that the actual shipment of denim fabrics has increased considerably in last four quarters. Whereas in the Oct-Dec’13 it was about 24 million mtrs, it is now about 32 million mtrs in July-Sept’14 period. The shipments have been increasing as we see an increase in production capacities with different mills in India and also with new mills coming up. The domestic market, though big, is unable to absorb all the production and the companies have to find a way to increase their exports.

The average prices, when seen as a whole are more or less same at about $2.80 with a few cents here and there. So we do not see much movement in prices .

Now lets see how Indian exports fare in different markets.  Lets look at exports to Bangladesh first –

    Shipments to Bangladesh

    image

The exports to Bangladesh in the last one year are about 55 million mtrs. The average price is over $3.00/mtr which is higher than the average price of all exports which is about $2.80/mtr. Bangladesh is taking about 40% of all Indian denim fabric exports and is the number one market for Indian exporters.

    Shipments to Egypt

    image

Egypt is another good market for Indian fabrics. Though not as big as Bangladesh, it still imported about 8 million mtrs from India in last one year . The average prices are highly fluctuating and going from $2.46 to $3.00 – indicating that increase in volumes results in lower prices.

    Shipments to Colombia

    image

Colombia is an emerging market for Indian fabrics. From very low volumes last year, the exports touched 2.7 million mtrs in second quarter of 2014. The prices , though are still not so good and it seems that Indian mills are catering to the lower end of the market as Colombia does buy good priced fabrics too.

    Shipments to Sri Lanka
    image

Sri Lanka has been an old and consistent market for Indian fabrics. The volumes do not go beyond a particular point but still there is regular volume and India shipped over 4 million mtrs to Sri Lanka in last 12 months.  The average prices are touching the average attained by Indian fabrics in all markets.

    Shipments to Lesotho

    image

Lesotho is a non-traditional market for Indian fabrics and takes up decent quantities touching over 4.5 million mtrs. The prices of such exports are very low and range around $2.25 /mtr.

Once the doyen of all exporters from India, Turkey gives a sad picture with meagre exports less than even 4 million mtrs in 12 months. The Turkish import duties killed the market and Indian exporters could never recover. The prices, though , are still the best that one can get anywhere else.

The Indian exports are expected to increase as domestic production increases and the mills rush around the world to see the markets. There are not many emerging markets left , though.

  • Denim Fabric Shipments from India | 2013 –I [Data Report]

denim fabric shipments from India Though the domestic denim fabric market in India is very strong, still a decent quantity of denim is exported to different countries around the world. The fabric is exported to Far East, Bangladesh, EU, South America etc. To analyse this further, we will see  in this special report :

    1. Some figures of shipments  of denim fabrics made to countries like China, Cambodia, Colombia ,Hong Kong, Egypt etc. We will cover other countries in another report.
    2. There will also be average prices of shipments made to each of these countries on a monthly basis
    3. First five months of 2013 are covered.

    [private_special]

Disclaimer: The data given in this report has been collected from various sources including customs deptt. Though we have taken high amount of  care and caution in presenting this data, we do not guarantees that it covers all the shipments made are covered or the data is 100% accurate.

    Denim Fabric Shipments to China

China is a growing market but still denim fabrics shipped from India are mainly nominated fabrics only ie fabrics shipped for conversion against orders of different brands and retailers. For local consumption,  Indian exporters still have to work hard as cheaper denim is available in China and furthermore there is duty on import of denim into China.

denim fabric shipped to china 2013

Note: The figures in April-June’13 quarter currently shows figures of April and May .

We see that the denim fabric shipped to China from Jan to May ‘13 is about 1.15 million mtrs. This is not a huge quantity and , as mentioned above, most of this fabric would be shipped on nomination basis. The prices averaging about $3.60 per mtr are decent and do not reflect sales of low grade material or to low grade buyers.

Denim Fabric Shipments to Hong Kong

Fabric exported to Hong Kong is , most of the times, diverted for conversion in China or other nearby countries. Hence the figures for China (mainly) would have to be seen taking into consideration figures of Hong Kong also.

Denim fabric shipments to Hong Kong

The prices for shipment to HK are higher than many other destinations  as we can see in the figures above. The averages are around $3.90/mtr  The shipment quantities of about 1-1.5 lac mtrs per month are ,however, small .

    Denim Fabric Shipments to Colombia

Colombia is an important country in the Central  America and is an

    Denim fabric shipments to Colombia

end users market where a number of local brands and retailers buy the fabric from around the world. About a million mtrs of denim fabric was shipped to Colombia in Jan-May’13 . But the remarkable thing to note is the sudden increase in fabrics shipped in the months of April and May which was much more than the first three months of 2013. However, the prices that we can see for exports to Colombia do not seem very encouraging. They are quite low and range around $2.70./mtr .

    Denim Fabric Shipments to Egypt

Egypt is also one of the good markets for Indian denim fabric exports. The volume of exports to Egypt is not too low. Lets look at figures below :

    denim fabric exports to Egypt

With an export of about 1.5 million mtrs in the first quarter, exports to Egypt are decent in comparison to exports to other countries. Though in the months of April and May, the volume has gone low, it might be a temporary change as exports to Egypt have been consistent for some time. The average prices are in the range of  $3-$3.10 . Egyptian market is a mixture of nominated shipments and non-nominated shipments. [/private_special]

  • Shipments Of Denim Fabrics From India – Prices , Destinations Etc[Subscriber Report]

Here is the next in the series of our reports for our subscribers. In the current report  we will analyze the main destinations of denim fabric exports from India to various places around the world .

The report has the following contents :

    a) Top  destinations for shipments of denim fabrics from India in 2010
b)Quarterwise Average prices of fabric export  for different destinations (except B’desh).
    c) Approx volumes shipped to different destinations .
    d) Changes in prices  compared to 2009.
    e) Some details on shipments made in 2011.
Note: We shall be covering the latest prices and destinations for Indian denim fabric in a separate report to come shortly ..

There are a number of denim mills in India and the combined capacity of these mills is about 700 million mtrs. However, when we look at exports, the figures of denim fabric exports are very dismal – mainly due to the fact that domestic market in India is VERY STRONG.. This makes selling in India more lucrative for most of the companies and only some companies export fabrics .

Lets look at some of the destinations where the Indian denim fabric is being shipped. Pl note that these are the actual destinations where the fabric is being shipped but it may not necessarily mean that the orders have originated in the same place.

a)Bangladesh : This is the top exporting destination for Indian denim fabric.
Over 55% of Indian denim exports are made to Bangladesh . Bangladesh is a huge conversion place and with over 273 million pcs of denim apparel shipped to US and EU and this is over 15 times the exports of denim apparel made by India. Hence , it is natural that it is also a huge destination for denim fabric exports. Though the exact figures are difficult to get , it is calculated  that over 50 million mtrs of denim was exported to Bangladesh from India during 2010 .

b)Turkey : Turkey has been a large market for Indian denim. Turkey is a large conversion and distribution centre and imported over 12 million mtrs of denim fabrics from India during 2010. We will speak about the average prices to Turkey in the tables below.

c)Sri Lanka : Sri Lanka is another decent sized garment manufacturing centre in Asia . It has some of the largest factories for garment conversion and about 7 million mtrs of denim fabrics was shipped from India to Sri Lanka during 2010.

d)Egypt : Egypt has always been an important market for Indian denim. However, with about 4 million mtrs shipped in 2010 , it seems to have cooled a little . But we can see more action here in 2011 reports.

    e) Lesotho : Lesotho is a surprise destination .Due to the AGOA benefits given to Lesotho, the exports of apparel are duty free to USA. This has encouraged the country to grow its domestic apparel industry. In 2010 over  3.5 million mtrs of denim was exported from Indian to Lesotho . This would be a growing trend as more and more companies seek to export to Lesotho.

f)Cambodia : Cambodia is an emerging destination and is expected to get some benefits from US for duty free imports of apparel . For the moment its exports of over 24 million pcs of denim jeans to EU is quite good and expected to increase as China becomes more and more expensive. About 2 million mtrs of denim fabric was shipped to Cambodia from India during 2010.

g)Hong Kong : Hong Kong used to be a big destination for Indian denim fabrics. However, over a period of time , the exports have fallen and are currently standing at about 2.5 million mtrs in 2010..

h)China : China is a surprise destination and over a million mtrs was also exported to China . Though the Chinese apparel firms are getting more expensive, the prices of local mills are also increasing giving some leeway for exporters of fabrics from outside China.  Though in 2010, only about 1 million mtrs was exported from India, this trend should be increasing in the coming times.

Average prices of denim fabric exports from India in 2010

    Cambodia 2.13 2.32 1.93
    Hong Kong 3.35 3.19 3.25
    China 2.98 2.74 3.18

In the first quarter of 2011 , we see that the prices have changed a little. In the first quarter of 2011,  the average price of export of Indian fabric was approx $3.10 / mtr fob (excluding Bangladesh).  This shows that the increase in prices due to cotton price was still reflected in prices of  denim in the first quarter. However, later quarters show some difference which we will bring out in another report.

  • Denim Trends In India – Streetwear Shots From Delhi , Bangalore And Mumbai

streetwear-trends-arvind The Indian market is a fast growing market for denim products.  From a small market in early 1990s , we are looking at a market today which consumes over 250 millions pcs of jeans in a year and is growing at a pace of over 10%. Going at this pace, the Indian market will overtake that of US – which consumes about 590 million pcs of denim apparel – in about 6 –7 years !

This makes the market for denim in India very serious .. It has enabled a  number of new mills to make entry into the denim market in the last 3-4 years and their productions have got absorbed easily. We are also looking at a number of expansions in the market in the coming year and the production capacity of Indian mills is likely to cross 750 million mtrs pa. Large international denim mills have started showing interest in the market despite high rate of import duties – to gain an early foothold in the market which is expected to be of huge size in the coming years.

Arvind mills is the largest denim mill in the market and is present in almost every segment of the market . Being market leaders , they are in a position to study the market deeper . One of the ways to study about the happenings in the market is to get to see what people are wearing on the streets. This is one of the activities the company does to study the market and regularly arranges street wear shoots in various Indian cities. This gives further insights into the market.  They have kindly shared some of these streetshots with us and we are reproducing them herebelow  in different presentations. The shots have been taken separately in the three big markets – Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.  Its interesting to see what people are wearing in these cities . It must be remembered while watching these shots that about 85% of the denim market in India is still dominated by unorganized sector and less than 15% share is held by brands. Another fact of the matter is that , again , about 85% of the market share is held by men’s denim – and the rest by women’s and children. This is basically due to conservative nature of Indian society – something which is changing fast !

    Denim Streetwear Trends in Delhi

Denim Trends : Streetwear Shots from Mumbai

Denim Trends in India : Streetwear shots from Bangalore

Some interesting observations from these pictures . Please take them with a pinch of salt since these could change with change in the timing and places where shots are taken! .

    • Denim consumers in Delhi like more of embellishments , embroidered and generally differentiated looks as compared to other markets.
    • Mumbai likes more of dark and subtle looks on their denim .
    • Girls generally have a preference for skinny fits in all the  three cities.
    • Distressed looks are generally not in – probably its difficult for youngsters  to convince parents  in India the logic to buy a torn jeans !!
    • Hardly any color denim is visible . This will change with the season and hopefully 2012 will see more of colors.
    • Girls  in Delhi are more conscious of denim fashion – sorry Mumbai and Bangalore !
    • For the lower ends of the market, accentuated embroideries, big streaks and cross hatches , bold whiskers and big patches of sandblasting or pp washing are visible. But as we have seen before, the consumers grow up very fast and change their preferences. Poly denim, which was probably one of the highest selling denim product , seems to have lost some sheen over time.
