    Finding the ultimate pair of jeans may be difficult, so it’s easy to long for the jeans one wore in the past, the ones that appeared to fit perfectly. To give one a new wardrobe staple, denim giant Levi’s brings in the new ’90s 501 jeans which are inspired by the vintage stance, putting us on a nostalgia for the classic Levi’s 501 denim. Levi’s launched a new take on its iconic 501 jeans on December 1, and the brand collaborated with American Model Hailey Bieber to do so.

    Hailey Bieber is never hesitant about her passion for all things ’90s-inspired, and in her latest Levi’s campaign, the 25-year-old model shared her perspective on the legendary decade.

    “I’ve talked a lot about ’90s silhouettes, ’90s movies, ’90s supermodels, ’90s actors and actresses, and it’s just fascinating to me,” she said in an exclusive interview with Levi’s.

    WHAT ONE GETS IN THE NEW 501 JEANS

    While the original Levi’s 501 ’90s jeans have never fallen out of style, the new Levi’s 501 ’90s jeans are likely to become a slightly distinct sort of staple this season.

    The jean rests just below the waist and has a more relaxed fit through the seat and leg, offering a fashionable yet roomier fit that can be scaled up or down depending on how the customer chooses to wear it. The fit lets people attain a slouchy, laid-back aesthetic without becoming baggy all around. The 501 ’90s jeans come in two washes and sizes ranging from 23 to 34, with inseams of 30′′ and 32′′. Drew Me In, which Hailey appears to be wearing in the campaign pictures, and Mad Love are the two medium washes that have been launched.

    “It’s a jean that’s not only physically comfortable but taps into that nostalgia of a jean you loved and wore back in the day,” said Jill Guenza, Levi’s Strauss & Co. vice president of design for women’s apparel. While finishes have been pristine and stonewashed for a long time, Guenza believes it is good to showcase a comeback to well-worn and vintage-inspired jeans.

    All of the pairs were made using the brand’s WaterLess technique, which uses up to 96 per cent less water than traditional denim finishing. The Levi’s 501 90s retails for $98-$108. For now, these jeans are only available to buy on the Levi’s App.

    Levi’s has long been a household denim classic, and Hailey Bieber has always been an admirer and face of the brand. Hailey has gladly revealed her go-to pair of the season. In an interview, she earlier stated that she enjoys “a baggier denim fit more than anything.” According to the brand, the new 501 ’90s jeans are almost precisely Hailey’s style.

    She fronts a series of studio pictures photographed by Stevie Dance for the campaign. She is dressed in a white tank top and Drew Me In jeans in a medium wash. The shoot is styled by Andrew Mukamal, who has tousled tresses by hairdresser Bryce Scarlett and equally impressive makeup by Nina Park. “It’s cool to look upon an era that you were born into and just draw inspiration”, said Hailey.

    Earlier this year, Levi’s celebrated its iconic 501 Originals style with its campaign featuring a diverse group of stars. Hailey Bieber, Naomi Osaka, Barbie Ferreira, and Emma Chamberlain appeared in-studio images captured by Micaiah Carter. Known for its durability, the cast wore 501 Original pieces ranging from jean jackets to casual t-shirts and straight-cut jeans. The brand’s ambassadors showcased their favorite ways to style and wear their 501s. The campaign evoked a spirit of creativity, authenticity, self-expression, and originality.

    Swedese collaborates with Nudie Jeans To Recreate Classic Lamino Chair In Denim

    “To have made one good chair maybe isn’t such a bad lifetime accomplishment”. The quote comes from the founder of Swedese and creator of the Lamino chair, Yngve Ekström. The chair was voted “best Swedish furniture design of the 20th century”, and claiming it to be only a good chair, is quite an understatement.

    Design, function and tradition were key words when Yngve Ekström designed the Lamino chair. His vision was clear; a simple, comfortable chair, so he designed an easy chair made from glue-laminated bentwood veneer with a seat made from sheepskin.

    To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Swedish furniture producer Swedese, Nudie Jeans were asked to do an interpretation of their classic Lamino chair. Since 1956, over 300.000 Lamino chairs have been produced by skilled craftsmen at the factory in Vaggeryd, SmÃ¥land, Sweden. During the process Nudie realized that Swedese and Nudie Jeans share the same view on sustainability, and that the materials they use work really well together. Hence they went in for a collaboration to produce a Lamino chair with a denim touch. This is more than a collaboration. It’s a tribute to sustainability, both in terms of design and lifespan.

    “We share the same passion for natural and raw materials, craftsmanship, and high quality construction and production. Products that are supposed to be used, that age beautifully and develop patina over time. The predilection for functional and sustainable design can maybe be explained by our common roots in Småland, Sweden.” – Maria Erixon, Creative Director at Nudie Jeans

    We chose materials that age beautifully. The frame is made with untreated beech veneer, with a few layers of orange colored veneer in-between – which of course comes from the orange stitching of our selvage. The seat comes in three different variations: a dry, organic, Kaihara selvage option, a pre-washed, hand-treated selvage option made by our washing experts at ITAC in Italy, and a natural leather option, vegetable tanned by Tärnsjö Garveri.

    Over the years, Amnesty and Nudie Jeans have collaborated on a bunch of different projects to raise awareness about Amnesty’s work. And for this project, Swedese and Nudie Jeans donate €50 to Amnesty for each chair sold.

  • Ten ways to create a unique ‘Persona’ for your jeans..

    Want your jeans to reflect your unique personality ? For those denim maniacs who want their jeans to look their second persona, check out these tips from Fashion Idie

    1. Avoid washing your jeans – jeans should not be washed too much- it washes away the unique patterns that are being developed on the jeans.
    2. Don’t be scared to get dirty
    3. Sleep in your jeans! – Though not very comfortable , it will  result in forming stronger creases on the jeans.
    4. Sweat is  good– let the sweat loosen the fabric of your jeans.
    5. Basic dark colored and unwashed jeans – It would be better if you take darker indigo denim with little or no wash so that there is a plenty of room for denim effects to take place.
    6. Let defects happen naturally – don’t create cuts or defects yourself. Let them happen as you wear the jeans..Trekking, playing football etc might be  good ideas to expedite the defects on your jeans.
    7. Wear them in the shower– or even swim in them .. Lets jeans resize more to your shape.
    8. Dry them in shade and turned inside out – prevents undue color loss.
    9. Wear them as often as possible-The more you wear, the faster the effects get ingrained onto your jeans.
    10. And if you still don’t get the desired results in a year (yes, it takes that much time), just distress them!
  • Premium denim line from Levi’s – Engineer Garments.

    Levi’s is trying hard to make its presence felt in the Premium Denim segment. The latest effort in this direction came with the launch of the Levi’s Engineered Garments – a collection of high end Men’s Jeans and casual clothes. Not to be confused with the (much cheaper) Engineered Jeans® of Levi’s, this collection derives its name from a New York label – Engineered Garments – who designed the same.
    The 501 button fly jeans modeled after 1947 versions is priced at USD 235/- which is signicantly higher than the previous premium denim collection of Levi’s – Capital E which were in the range of USD 150.

    Levi’s has been struggling to reinvent itself as (also) a premium denim label due to the large market of about USD 1 billion (in US) which seems to be still growing well. However, it has not been able to make any significant dent in this market till now which has been dominated by the likes of 7 for all Mankind, True Religion, Earl Jeans .

    Is there a way to search for the latest on Denim Trends? Searching Google news might be one option and searching a host of other denim sites may be another option. But I like to look at search for latest in denim from the denim search engine which searches all these sites at one go. Here are some links that I would like to share :

  • Levi’s India adjust pricing strategy


    Levi’s India plans to vacate the middle price segment and concentrate on the lower and the higher ends.Its Signature brand – which is the value offering – will see a further fall in price and start at Rs 900 instead of Rs 1000(USD 22 instead of USD 24 approx.). On the other hand, the premium segment will see an increase of about 15% in average pricing and increase to about Rs 2400(about USD 58). The report by Economic Times also mentions that in the next six months, the company will roll out its high-fashion, high-end brand Levi Rivet nationally.
    The company is also planning to increase its adspend significantly during the next few months as it sees a slowdown and counts on its advertising to perk up the sales and take an increasing share in the 10 million value jeans and about 3 million premium jeans market in India.
    Levi’s has been continously moving in the direction of vacating the mid-priced segement – as I mentioned in a previous post also and probably this is a sign of times to come for many large denim labels. The mid-priced segment of the Jeans is experiencing the miniumum growth and its share is being taken up by local brands who are more adaptable to local conditions (in India brands like Spykar,Killer etc)

  • Men’s Jeans experience fall in imports into US – 6.82% in 2007

    As Compared to 2006 , the imports of Men’s Jeans into US has fallen 6.82% from 293 million pieces to about 273 million pieces in 2007.
    The fall was consistent through the various quarters of 2007(as I mentioned last year) . The table below shows the figures of imports from various countries

    Some points are worth noting from the table:
    a)Mexico still retains its position as number 1 exporter despite falling share.But that is expected to fall.
    b)China is yet to make a significant mark in the US men’s jeans market.Though it will definitely.
    c)Bangladesh has continued to make progress and has aquired a sizeable 9% share of the market.
    However, its neighbour India still has an insignificant share of 0.67% and it shows that India is absolutely uncompetitive in Men’s Jeans.
    d)Small countries like Lesotho have made great use of Sub-saharan treaties to increase exports to US
    e)Egypt has gained a great share at the cost of Jordan due to benefits extended to it. Jordan has lost the share due to its rising costs.This is continue to grow and more and more of factories are expected to shift to Egypt.

    The fall in the jeans imports is perhaps consistent with the fall in growth rate of denim consumption..

  • Evisu Spring Summer ’09 Collection

    Evisu Deluxe Spring Summer ’09 collection follows the first voyage of a Japanese ship sailing to America (in 1860).It draws from the historical references of the time and tries to combine the best of Japanese and American tailoring..As the Evisu blog mentions, the ‘tailoring is inspired by the naval details such as shaped patch pockets,a high buttoning reefer jacket,sailor collars and wide legged cuffed trousers’ .
    The denim collection is also inspired by the LEE brand(H.D Lee company was founded in 1889). The collection uses a newly developed selvedge denims including No.13LEFT- a Japanese woven reproduction of the denim fabrics used by LEE 1910s onwards.Jeans cut from 13LEFT denim have the leather patch sewn on the left side of the waistband.

    Sea Washed(!) : The jeans have been hand washed in the sea and dried on the rocks nearby.This means that the washing effects will be subtle and denim will be hard (no chemicals to soften the denim are used).’Whiskering’ and ‘honeycombing’ will come with time as the jeans wears out..Exclusive tailoring is used whereby each jeans is tailored by a single operator who signs each completed pair(if I am correct -Earnest Sewn also uses such tailoring techniques to ensure quality).

  • Self Edge – the cool denim store in San Francisco


    Though most of the denim afficionados might be aware of this store, I think its worth a post on this blog because of its importance to denim lovers.
    Self Edge is a store in San Francisco and is not the typical retail store where one goes and buys out the apparel. As you enter, you can feel that it has that ‘air of denim’ which is full of passion and history.As New York Times mentions
    ,Self Edge is “something between a premium specialty shop and a museum dedicated to a yearning for past quality — a sentiment easily detected in the antique wooden furniture and Persian rugs that decorate the shop”.
    Most of the denim labels found here are of Japanese origin made with Selvedge denim, though some other brands are also found.Brands like Iron Heart,Sugarcane,Nudie Jeans,The Flat head are found here(some of them exclusively).It becomes difficult for newcomers to understand why these brands here are retailed for prices like USD 200 and going up to USD 500 and sometimes more. But, the passion that goes into the building of these jeans also goes into retailing of these brands at stores like Self Edge..

    Organic is in..
    Organic clothes is getting more and more popular as environmental conciousness is increasing and the ‘return to nature’ sentiment gets stronger.I think its a very healthy direction for the fashion to take..
    Organic denim is not to be left behind – in fact with denim consuming almost 17% of world cotton, it is imperative that a part of denim production moves on the Organic route.I had mentioned in my previous post regarding organic denims..

    Nudie Jeans: Besides organic cottons, they are using potato starch,natural indigo etc to make their Organic Denims. It was good to get some figures from them about damage by normal cotton “Denim is made of cotton, which causes great damage to our environment both in terms of water consumption (7000 to 29.000 litres of water for each kilogram of ready garment) and in terms of poisonous substances and insecticides. Cotton fields stand for 25% of all insecticides worldwide!”

    Levi’s Eco: Levi’s also started its Eco line in the Fall 2006 and seems to be getting a good response to its Organic denims. They are primarily using Organic Cotton for these denims and this is what they have to say about the organic cotton used in these jeans”Organic farming practices can be used to grow natural fibers including cotton as well as food. Organic cotton farming starts with seeds that have not been genetically modified or treated with pesticides or fungicides. During the growth phase, weed control is achieved through hand hoeing or physical removal and pest control is accomplished through the use of natural predators, trap crops and other biological and cultural practices. Farmers rely on natural processes such as seasonal freezes, rather than the application of chemical defoliants, to prompt the opening of the cotton boll and allow the cotton bud to be picked by hand or machine”

    Sharkah Chakra : Though a relatively less known brand and available in London (Harvey Nicolas) and Paris,they take the concept of ‘organic’ a step further. They make a complete Organic Jeans ie everything from Cotton to dyes to weaving(on handlooms) . The process of producing one jeans is quite long – but the results are good..Worth checking out..

    Sling & Stones : This Japanese brand uses Peruvian handpicked organic cotton – converted to Japanese Supima Denim,Dyed with natural Indigo and washed in environment friendly ozone washes.And thrown in the package are 24carat gold rivets and embroidery..Whew!
