Sustainability Efforts By The Exhibitors Of Denimsandjeans – Part I

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that sustainability is the future of not only our industry but also that of others and world in general. We , as a generation, cannot afford to be lackadaisical about our responsibility towards our planet as  “we have borrowed it from our future generations” . Each of us today has a responsibility to do the whatever little bit we can do to ensure that we contribute our 10 cents in reducing the impact on our environment. This is not only restricted to our business activities but also to our personal lives. We really need to bring focus on what we need to do , what good things are being done in this direction and whatever we can hope to do. As Denimsandjeans, com, we will try to bring increased awareness to this aspect which is becoming most important in our lives.
As a starter, we are bringing together information about various sustainability efforts of our exhibitors who have been working hard to bring make their products and activities more sustainable and helping their partners as well in doing so.

For the starters, we focus on our industry and identify areas where the efforts are most crucial. Some of them are :  Water Saving, ZDHC , Renewable Energy, Sustainable Raw Materials, Waste Recycling , CO2 Emission Control, Circular Fashion. In this article , we gonna feature ORTA ANADOLU  from Turkey, and KEMIN- GARMON from US/Italy  and will highlight their efforts in this direction.

    ORTA ANADOLU

Since its inception, ORTA has been weaving a denim heritage passed from generation to generation. Founded in 1953, ORTA transformed from a spinning and weaving company to a denim manufacturer in 1985. Today, ORTA produces over 60 million meters of denim in its Turkey and Bahrain factories and is creating a platform for leading manufacturers to step up and reclaim a denim industry where more aesthetics leads to more ethics.

ORTA started its sustainability journey at the beginning of 2000 by using organic cotton. The sustainability platform Orta is known as Orta Blu which was founded in 2010. As an early supporter and adopter of BCI, ORTA has always been on the forefront of sustainable change.

    Today, Orta claims that

“While our footprint is what we take from the planet when we consume, our handprint is what we give the planet when we create change for the better”. At Orta, We are on a mission to drive the denim industry into a more sustainable future. That’s why Orta Blu is in everything we do, at the intersection of where people, planet and purpose matter.
Beauty is in the process. ORTA is on a mission to create the most mindful, purposeful, sustainable and beautiful fabrics. ORTA’s technologists and developers have perfected the most advanced processes on the planet that yield superior quality fibers, recollect and re-life significantly reduce water usage and conserve energy. Our goal is to create next generation denim processes for a more beautiful and sustainable world.

Sustainability Efforts By The Exhibitors Of Denimsandjeans | Orta

On energy side, in 2015 Orta partnered with GDRE (General Directorate of Renewable Energy in Turkey), UNIDO (UN Indistrial Development Organization) and UNDP (UN Development Programme) to increase energy efficiency in the industry. With this collaboration Orta established an Energy Management Team that has been dedicatedly working on performance tracking, targets and projects since 2015, integrating energy management in all efforts since then. Another outcome of this collaboration is the establishment of ISO 50001 Energy Management System in their  production plant, through which the company claims to save  11,7 GWh energy and to prevent the emission of 3,4 gigatonnes of greenhouse gas  from 2015 to 2016.

With SS19, ORTA is making a bold commitment to be a leader in transforming the denim industry with the most advanced natural technologies. As of this SS19 collection and moving forward, every fabric will be made using the INDIGO FLOW process that is proprietary to ORTA. INDIGO FLOW is a CLEAN LABEL PROCESS where it is possible to achieve up to 70% reduced water use, better dye penetration, energy saving and get a fabric with richer and cleaner look.

“Embedding INDIGO FLOW into our manufacturing standards is our first step towards disrupting the denim industry and leapfrogging us to a Denim 4.0!”

Sustainability Efforts By The Exhibitors Of Denimsandjeans | Orta

One of the latest developments on material side is Zeromax Denim Family. It’s soft denim with shaping stretch that drapes next-to-skin. It has zero cotton and maximum soft shape. Zero max is woven with minimum impact to shape the future of denim and crafted with unique twill and elasticity fusion. Zero impact due to no use of cotton which contributes to environmental pollution through use of water, pesticides and chemicals in its production process.

With all the sophisticated new digital technology out there, there is a call to be more transparent in the manufacturing process. Orta took a step ahead to become more transparent through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) . LCA is an analysis method where the potential environmental impact of products can be assessed in each and every step along the life cycle from cradle to grave. With LCA, the company simulates production into a software by using its own facilities’ consumption, production and emissions as primary data combined with the secondary data acquired from the worldly known databases.

As of AW19/20 collection, Orta has labeled each and every ORTA garment with a unique QR Code that provides full transparency in the making of the fabric so that one can monitor and measure the environmental impact of their fabrics. In order to take their LCA studies one step further, they have also acquired the environmental product declaration (EPD) for 4  products. EPD is a 3rd party verification of  LCA studies which provides transparency, credibility, and comparable information. The EPDs can be seen accessed from the International EPD System website.

Orta has also partnered with Alliance for Responsible Denim (ARD) from the very beginning. The ARD is an Amsterdam based initiative led by Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Circle Economy, Made by and House of Denim and brings together a collective denim brands to work together to make denim more sustainable.

ORTA and Circle Economy have been partners since 2016. ORTA assumed the primary sponsorship of a special event BEYOND GREEN that is brought out by Circle Economy and The Amsterdam Fashion Institute to create a circular fashion world. By using the collective power of students and industry to tackle critical issues throughout the fashion system, Beyond Green brings together new and established minds to push the boundaries of what we know, and realize what we dare to imagine. The company has also expanded their partnership with a project called Circle Fashion Tool, a decision making tool built to help brands evaluate the end of life options and circular opportunities for their own textile excess and weigh the practical implications and environmental and economic impacts between scenarios. The tool aims to empower brands to move from the ‘why’ to the ‘how’ of circular fashion.

    Sharkskin

Sharkskin suits were a staple of the 1960s fashion. These suits had a certain shine which made them more appealing to the vintage suit lovers.
Orta sharkskin concept is driven from the idea of that fashion look which is achieved by fabric coating with different hues and hand feel basically on womens and mens stretch constructions. The concept comes in two flavours :

    • Angelshark : in bold and smooth with a thin layer of coating in green, bordeaux , grey , brown , navy and other colors.
    • Reefshark : where the strong look of denim is visible.

  • Denim Academy By Orta Anadolu

Denim fabric has a particular production process which is closely connected with garment manufacturing and laundering. It has its unique terminology and practices, which have been cultivated by experience. Being the supplier of globally known brands and manufacturers, Orta Anadolu, the premium denim mill from Turkey , tries to share its know–‐how and experience with its partners. In 2002, Orta launched “Denim Academy“. Denim Academy is a training program and online reference dedicated to all aspects of denim fabric production.

    DA studio

The aim was to Integrate all essential information which would help resolve conflicts and develop solutions for brands, manufacturers and laundries. It is mainly intended for Orta customers, but academicians and students also visit the academy. Denimacademy weaving workshop

The training program is based on a 2–‐day workshop at Orta’s Kayseri factory. Cotton, yarn spinning, weaving, dyeing, sanforizing, finishing and inspection are the topics covered; typically by a walk–‐through of the production line, followed by in–‐depth workshops. Denim Academy is not a routine factory visit. Participants attending the programme not only get familiar with denim processes, but are also able to ask questions to fabric technicians and discuss production–‐related issues. It is a great environment for industry experts to share their experience.

    HISTORY

Denim Academy has a history of 10 years. The first academy members were in Orta Factory June, 2002. The number of Denim Academy members has reached 300 since then. The program has been enhanced with “Mobile Denim Academy” and “Reverse Denim Academy” versions. Mobile Denim Academy is intended for larger groups and offers the possibility to apply the Denim Academy program outside Orta premises via audio–‐visual educational materials. Reverse Denim Academy workshops happen in manufacturing and laundry sites, where DA tutors and manufacturing people meet and exchange solutions.

    CONTENT

The program is tailor–‐designed for a group of 5–‐6 participants. Therefore, there is Not any preset calender. Upon the application, DA team tries to understand the particular Needs in order to offer the most suitable workshops.

    DA WORKSHOPS

2 years ago, Denim Academy has added 3 workshops to its curriculum.

    • Indigo Workshop
Offers the participants to understand the basic facts about indigo dyeing, a–‐hands—‐on Experiment in a pilot set–‐up.
    • Denim Academy has a sample loom to run “Weaving Workshop” where participants can literally weave denim in any of the twill types.
    • The mini–‐kitchen at Denim Academy Studio enables students who wants to create different coating effects on denim fabric. “Finishing Workshop” is continuously developed with Q&A sessions.

    Denim workshop Orta

All training modules are supported with booklets, DVDs and other necessary visual materials which are owned and certified by Orta. • Interview With Ebru Karakoc :Orta Anadolu

Orta Anadolu is one of the well known premium denim millOrta Anadolu and has been serving the denim industry for over 25 years.  I spoke to Ebru Karakoc – Marketing Director and Burak Baykaldi on the latest products and innvoation from Orta.

Could you tell us something about the history of Orta Anadolu..

Orta started manufacturing fabrics 55 years ago and during the early 80s the owners decided to focus on denim production only. The vision was not just to produce denim fabrics but to work with the best brand names in the industry. Soon Orta Anadolu became a preferred manufacturer to worldwide recognised jeanswear brand names. Levis appointed Orta Anadolu as a 01 fabric manufacturer confirming the quality of the vintage denim production capability and as the market evolved Orta Anadolu proactively started offering fabrics and services for the sportswear brands as well as the fashion brands.

Today the production capacity reaches 60 million meters with the 2 vertical plants in Kayseri Turkey and Manama Bahrain. The company headquarters is in Istanbul and through the global sales and marketing operation Orta Anadolu serves brands and manufacturers in Europe, USA, Colombia, Australia, Bangladesh, Japan, North Africa and Turkey. The focus remains on strong partnership understanding with the customers who are valued as the main asset of the company. The production infrastructure is updated according to the needs of the market. Denimservices within the Kayseri premises provides garment making/finishing possibilities to evaluate the newly developed fabrics promptly with a capacity to produce 25,000 garments to present the line. Orta Blu is the sustainibility division of Orta Anadolu established in 2011 and follows and shares social missions and promotes a sustainable life style.

Orta is among the most reputed denim mill around the world. What makes it tick ??

Orta focuses on long-term relations with its customers rather then operating on transaction bases. The expert consultants and the management team aim to provide proactive solutions for its global customers. The Orta staff turnover is very low both in white and blue collar teams and this enables the company to specialise in manufacturing skills as well as customer relations. Product development and constant innovation for the jeanswear market as well as the fashion market are key driving factors for the sucess of the company. Orta team makes it happen.

c)You come out with innovative products at regular intervals. Can you tell us something about the latest ones..

Slow Fit Stretch Denim Fabric - Orta

Slowfit concept is one of the latests innovations. Where we use combination of methods to achieve soft but high performance jeans. Combinations of different fiber like tencel , cupro, viscose etc. for softness and combination of PES, PA, Elastane for higher performances.

Consumers will be much more happy with super soft high performance fabrics.

HD = high definition denim. We have a concept of fabrics where customers can easily get surface abrasion after scraping. We offer this concept especially for waterless garment finishes. Most of the customers having problem to get a nice natural look after waterless finishes on garments. This technology creates easy clean abrasion after scraping and washing. Compared to normal fabrics you clearly see and HD look.

The Alchemy finished products from Orta has some great supersoft capabilities – I had reviewed this earlier.. Can you throw some more light on this special finish. How long does it last in home laundries ?

Alchemy finish will stand home laundry washes all the lifecycle of the fabric. Alchemy gives a permanent softness. When we compare alchemy and nonalchemy fabrics ; we see that the touch difference of nonalchemy fabrics after home laundry washes is much more than alchemy fabrics. Means alchemy fabrics will stay soft even after homelaundry washes.

e)I am sure you deal with most of the reputed denim brands. Could you name some of the reputed customers..

Levis, Lee, Wrangler Diesel, DSquared, Replay, Guess, Armani, Miss Sixty, Energie, Meltin Pot, Fornarina, Sisley, Benetton, Met Jeans, J Brand, GAP, J Crew, Banana Republic, Paige, Mother Jeans, Seven for all Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, True Religion, Current Elliot, Hudson, G-Star, Denham, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Scotch&Soda, Paul Smith, Burberry , Uniqlo, Tennis etc.

Orta Anadolu is known for its social missions. What is the philosophy behind it ?

    Orta Blu Social Missions
Orta Anadolu has always made donations however in 2011 it decided that it should share its experiences and build sustainable communities globally if it wanted to give back to the world that we all share. Thus Orta Blu was establised both as an on-line and off-line platform. Orta’s main business is making and selling fabrics however the expertise behind the production as well as the global philosopical vision enables it to promote models of sustainable communities which can use its core product and create value-added approaches. In its first social mission Orta Anadolu has teamed up with UNICEF in Italy and Beirut and has created a production unit to support a project based on turn-back to school for girls in a rural village in Akkar. The project enabled 80 girls to go back to school, 15 women to learn how to make garments and 1000 uniforms were distributed to the school children in need.
Orta is not simply making and selling fabrics but creating sustainable projects around the world.

What do you think about the Asian markets – particularly India, China etc ? Do you see these markets developing well over the next few years ?

Orta is looking at the Asian markets and is building strategies to serve the jeanswear garment manufacturers which serve global markets as well as the growing local retail brands needs in these regions. Orta expects major growth in Chinese as well as Indian markets. The global luxury brands are moving in Asian markets since 5 years and as the buying power of consumers in these markets increase the demand for advanced fabrics will grow. The e-commerce in China is expected to grow to 60 billion usd in 5 years and this will invigorate the growth of the fashion industry.

  • Orta Anadolu– Social Denim Missions

Denim – the ever versatile fabric –has seen growth over the last 130 years like no other fabric has seen. We can easily associate denim with fashion , comfort, durability , verstaility , sturdiness and whole lot of such qualities.  But is there any association of denim with Charity , with Social causes , with an effort to improve lives ????

Normally , it is difficult to find such an association.

    Orta Anadolu

Orta BlueOrta Anadolu (Turkey) is one of the most reputed denim mill around the world and it is one of the very few companies which has made such an  association for denim – successfully. Through their social arm – Orta Blu – Orta Anadolu is trying to make an impact on the lives of poorest of people. It has undertaken a number of social missions around the world to in this direction. As Orta describes :

“Social Missions are a new form of charity in which the donor’s product becomes the catalyst of the operation. Denim is what we know how to do well. Using denim we have launched a series of initiatives that are helping local NGOs in 3 different continents to sustain their programs. We travel to the field, roll our sleeves, and approach the problems with the determination to make a difference and the know-how of an international business. We train the local people , we spend time with them. We share their everyday lives to better understand how we can help. As we try to solve a problem, many others come up. We go back and look for partners whose business could help solve the new problems. We call it the life loop. We don’t recycle just denim. We try to recycle life too and help people get a fresh start..”

One of the missions among the various undertaken by Orta ,   is “ THE SCHOOL UNIFORM PROJECT “

Many African children do not send their children to school because they cannot afford to buy  a school uniform.  Orta Blu launches a School Uniform Design contest with SCAD , Savannah School or Art and Design.

School unform design - denimschool uniform design in denim

The winning design is used to manufacture free school uniforms for children around the world.

Now , the other part of this story . The Women’s Association is a small NGO that’s a part of a UNICEF programme in a Lebanese village. It had to shut down its literacy programme because of lack of funds. Orta Blu , under the supervision of UNICEF , supplied them with denim , new equipment , and training to manufacture school uniforms.

After this process of uniform manufacturing is over , Orta Blu purchases the uniforms and delivers them to children locally and in Africa.

Besides the African children getting the uniforms ,  20 jobs are created with the manufacturing of the uniforms . The money from the sale of the uniforms allows the Lebanese Women’s Association to restart their literacy programme and enroll a number of children.

So this programme has  created many jobs, helped many  children stay in school through a literacy program, and has made it affordable to attend school for hundreds of more children in 2 continents. It has created a large online community made of the most diverse people. Its globalization at its best !

This is one of the commendable social missions undertaken by Orta Blu . They have undertaken many other such missions .Want to know more about their social missions ? Contact Orta here

  • Orta Anadolu To Launch Alchemy One – Denim Fabric Finishing Process At BBB

    image

Orta Anadolu – the famous denim mill from Turkey has come up with a unique denim fabric finishing process which changes the structure of the fabric . The process has a large number of pluses but the biggest being its eco – sustainability with about 90% of chemicals being used in close circuit and almost zero water being used !
The fabric made using this unique washing process is being launched at the Bread and Butter – Berlin (BBB) on July 6th .  The fabric has already been tested by a number of companies and people in the industry to check out the specifics and Ebru Karakoç  from  Orta feels the response has been terrific !

Denham – the Jean maker  : has made a collaboration with Orta to use Alchemy one for presenting collection at Pitti and will also be doing at BBB.

Piero Turk – the famous denim designer who has washed Alchemy One has remarked that it was very easy to retrieve true authentic vintage look on rigid fabric easily and that he could apply 3 dimensional finishes without much effort.

Antonio di Battista who has also conducted wash trials has revealed that the fabric transforms into a very luxurious look with an amazing hand-feel in the simplest finishes.

What can be achieved with Alchemy One  process of finishing?

As per Orta Anadolu, the following characteristics can be achieved in the denim and other fabrics by this finishing process :

    • improved bulk .
    • improved lustre .
    • high strength .
    • reduced extensibility .
    • increased affinity for dyes of certain types .
    • enhanced evenness of dye take up.
    • can be used as a treatment for durable press finish.
    • delivers better physical performance with better  visuality and hand-feel.
    • improves the tensile strength and dimensional stability of cotton rich fabric
    • “improved properties over mercerizing” . It would perform further processing, including dyeing and finishing, that would provide the fabrics with “performance properties that are not achievable with conventional methods.
    • permits the use of less resin than other mercerization techniques, it could achieve better performance with respect to strength.
    • alters the visuality of the fabric and makes the fabric smoother and brighter.
    • reduces the use of softener, resin, antipilling enzyme in denim garment finish.
    • processes  the fabric with almost zero water consumption.

The image below shows the advantages of the process quite nicely .
