    SUSTAINABILITY

    Sustainability is THE MANTRA for a large number of buyers and suppliers in the changing global eco-financial environment. Some companies however try to take this mantra a step ahead . Vicunha finds it  one of the most important pillars  and has been the focus of their activities for more than ten years now. The Vicunha Team stresses this point :

    “ All VICUNHA denims are distinguished by 100% BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton. The recycling process is so efficient that there is no waste at the end of the production and therefore we can claim to produce zero landfill. In fact VICUNHA is the largest individual consumer of BCI cotton in the world and uses around 100,000 tonnes a year. For SS2018 we will be launching a new range of ECO RECYCLE fabrics, this range incorporates waste yarn , recycled back into the spinning process to create new yarn, options are set to be available in both stretch and rigids. The key to good recycled yarn is consistency, this is difficult to achieve, however as VICUNHA create this in house under strict control, we are able to achieve exacting standards. The range of fabrics to be offered also includes options that also use less water in the making.     DRYYARN TECHNOLOGY

    With the new Dryarn technology, Vicunha is bringing a high-performance denim with temperature-control effect to the market. The company claims that the fabrics can be worn for high-performance sports in all weather conditions and It also uses a really lightweight yarn that is not only comfortable to wear, but is able to keep you warm when the conditions are cold and cool when the conditions are hot . This further blurrs the boundaries between casualwear and sportswear.

    SHIRTINGS AND LIGHTWEIGHTS

    With newly woven textures and visual effects, Vicunha pushes forward on a range of lightweight shirting / dress fabrics for spring/summer 2018 . According to the company ,

    “The current trend for retro-modern patterns is reinterpreted in fabrics with patchwork effects in multi tones and textures with irregular slubs in the warp and weft that emphasise the characteristics of the fabrics. Texture features strongly in the collection, fresh small dobby’s and herringbones which when coated further emphasize and enhance the structure of the fabric in wash. As a contrast VICUNHA also incorporate a lightweight papery finish shirting which provides an excellent base for prints. “

    Vicunha showed a visual feast of creative and innovative men’s and ladies denim wear. Here is what the Vicunha creative team had to say about their collection.

     

    “To reflect the Playground theme the collection encompassed the spirit of the Athleisure trend by showing products with both attitude and comfort. Garments provided maximum impact as they showcased washes from Martelli and Comask in key shapes blurring the lines between active and casualwear.At the pinnacle of the collection were fabrics from the’ Athletic range’, a range of fabrics which perfectly addresses the crossover between sportswear and leisure. The fabrics remain denim on the outside but feel like a jog pant on the inside. This gives the wearer total freedom of movement whilst providing all the character and wash effects achievable on denim. New technological advancements featured strongly, these were showcased in many of the ‘perfect fit’ ladies jeans, offering high performance and advanced technology with an ‘ultra soft’ touch.Both Essential and premium denims featured across both men’s and ladies wear showing the flexibility of many of the articles and the trend of comfort and ease of movement into menswear.Authentic articles washed in new and innovative ways, recycled and reinvented tradition and heritage into something new, desirable and tangible. Loved, worn and mended styles epitomized this look and encompassed the ethos of this trend. All of the articles shown were made from BCI cotton, and with a stockholding service to support the Asian market, Vicunha stand strong to service this part of the world. Vicunha have spent the last 10 years building a solid foundation of sustainability credentials and support to social causes it is therefore with respect that we can proudly say Vicunha = creativity with a conscience.”

    AW16 Collection From Vicunha , Brazil

    Brazil , as we mentioned before , lives in a world of its own. It has a huge domestic market for denim and other apparel and has developed its own unique fashion sense . The fashion in Brazil – though influenced by international developments – follows its own course . The companies – mills, laundries , garment factories – all follow the unique pattern of demand that is created in the market.

    Vicunha is the largest denim company  in terms of actual production , not only in Brazil but around the world , and it does have a sizeable influence on the consumers – often creating trends for their domestic market. On the occasion of the launch of their AW16 collection, I visited Sao Paolo to get a feel of their products, the trends and Brazilian market in general. The launch had all the glam ingredients including a catwalk by some great looking Brazilian models, presentations by specially invited denim guru Adriano Goldschmied and also by Giovanni Petrin of Martelli , presence of international consultants , washing experts and of course visitations by most important Brazilian buyers – estimated to be over 2000 over a 3 day period ! . The whole atmosphere was electric – flowing with the energy of denim aficionados.

    FASHIONIM – Fashion in Denim  – event was held at our 3rd Denimsandjeans Bangladesh show on 1st March at Dhaka. Three of our exhibitors displayed their SS’16 collections at the show. Vicunha Textil from Brazil  was one of the sponsors of the show and displayed their products during the catwalk which included their following product categories. The company gives the description of these products in their own words as below:

    Stretch & Comfort

    Moove line: a variety of denim and twill fabrics with a medium/comfort stretch to be used in more adjusted fits as skinnies, aimed at providing a great freedom of movement.

    ECO-D: Produced with 100% recycled polyester from plastic bottles, ECO- D fabrics also optimize the absorption and fixation of the dyes and reduce by 80% the water consumption.
    Carbolumen : stylish and modern fabrics with perfect fit, cold touch, brightness and as sophisticated as leather. The perfect combination of intense and bright colors with Leather look, provided by the special finishing CARBOLumen.

  • Vicunha AW-15/16 Denim Collection

    Vicunha, the famous denim group from Brazil  with production  distributed among five manufacturing facilities in Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina , brings out their AW15/16 denim collection. The collection has some interesting concepts including brilliant coatings (Carbolumen), denim for athletic purposes and super power stretches. We bring here a summary of their main concepts.

    SUPER POWER STRETCH

    Shirt weights, satin weaves, chambrays as well as 4×1, 3×1 and 2×1 weaves are part of the SUPER POWER STRETCH program that became one of the basis segments with a fabric elasticity of up to 67%.  The weights are mainly   between 7 and 10 oz. Alongside colors and washes, optics and structure play the leading role: “high density denims” with a clean look and a soft and comfortable feeling prevail which, according to Vicunha, are important menswear as well. Consequently, the highlights include light denim qualities produced from cotton or mixtures of Tencel for blue denim shirts, as well as in women’s fashion for jumpsuits, overalls and skirts. Thomas Dislich , marketing Director says :

    “In general, there is a strong trend towards fine, combed yarns, comfort yarns and polyamide: a soft, casual feeling is the most important issue.Thus, the SUPER POWER STRETCH remains a front-runner, not only for slim shapes, but also to guarantee the authenticity of form and best wearing comfort.”

    VICUNHA presents its ATHLETIC DENIM for the autumn/winter 2015/16  with an elastic stretch content of 76% for maximum comfort, elasticity and fit. It is a mixture of urban denim look on the outside and workout outfit feeling on the inside.

    CARBOLUMEN

    Carbolumen is a finishing highlight which presents highly brilliant coatings, natural leather looks and qualities with a cool touch and recognizable denim identity thanks to progressive technologies. Besides brilliance, structure and high quality, the primary focus is on comfort,  fit and breathability. A sophisticated softening treatment ensures succinct effects and a  contrast of glossy and matt surfaces.

    ECO-D

    ECO D are authentic colored jeans line made of warp dyed yarn and the fabric consists of 100% recycled polyester obtained from recycled PET bottles and 100% BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton.Each meter of fabric uses about 3 plastic bottles . Even for the dyeing process the normal water consumption is  reduced by approximately 80%, as claimed by the company- besides reusing about 70% of the remaining small amount of water.

    METALLIC GLAM

    Glamour stays! Shine and glitter effects created through micro-particles applied on the fabric surface ensure exciting metallic looks. In addition to the characteristic black and silver, this season Metallic also strikes with strong colors such as royal blue and grass green. About 100 washes are guaranteed by the company for the high resistance and durability of the product.

    TRANSFORMING DENIM

    TRANSFORMING DENIM “turns“ blue denim into a  piece of art, which is mixed up with bright colors. The shades of color depend on the grade of chemical treatment, for instance, by the use of permanganate spray during the washing process. The creative diversity due to the various color shadings – from soft to vivid – allows a wide range of options for the production of unique, exclusive pieces.

    Vicunha is a large group with worldwide sales for the first half of 2012 were around 285 million U.S. dollars, with a net profit (EBITDA) of 34 million dollars.  The company currently employs 7,000 people and produces approximately 550,000 metres/day, seven days a week, in five of its own factories (three in Brazil and one each in Ecuador and Argentina).     vicunha denimHaving recently acquired a denim manufacturing facility in Argentina, and with denim  production of about 140 million mtrs pa, the Brazilian company Vicunha is now the second largest denim fabric company in the world. With such a huge production to sell , the company is still very nimble and responsive to market needs for quick productions . The company explains how it has to cater to produce fabrics to cater to three different seasons at the same time:

This means covering three seasons at a time and providing fast and reliable large scale deliveries and optimum customer service plus technical support for a very sensitive market that reacts like a seismograph to change.”

    Here is a brief forecast from the company for the Spring/Summer 2013 season

    • “Plurality” is the catchphrase for the Spring/Summer 2013 season. Denims have to be equally stylish of every shade, and in the three main kinds of washes: Dark, including the authentic “rinse-wash”; middle, with the casual “used-wash”; and light, with “bleach wash,” for a naturally-faded favorite jeans look.
    • Despite all the choices, “sky blue” and “pure indigo” are the clear front-runners and are considered strong favorites this season.
    • Appearance and texture are key: high density denims
      come out on top with their clean look and soft, comfortable fit, which is of increasing importance in the men’s range.
    • Lightweight fabrics such as cotton with Tencel and
      linen
      are also highlights for jeans, currently in fashion for women’s jumpsuits, overalls and skirts. Generally, there is a strong trend towards fine, combed threads. Whether cambric or 2×1 ribs – soft, relaxed fit is key.
    • Super-stretch remains at the forefront, not only for fashionable slim fits, but also to ensure authentic design and wearability. Finely combed threads, soft threads,
      and polyamide threads ensure softness.
    •  Preferred colors: distressed light blue and beige!

    Sustainability Mantra

    At the beginning of the year, VICUNHA became the very first Brazilian company to join the BETTER COTTON INITIATIVE. Vicunha’s first priority is the sustainable, clean production of cotton. As a pioneering member of the BETTER COTTON INITIATIVE in the Brazilian market, their main priorities are sustainable, clean cotton production, environmental protection and social responsibility.

    “Pricing policy is important, but not at the expense of environmental and social responsibility,” commented Thomas Dislich, CEO of VICUNHA Europe, on membership in the BCI.

    The denim giant is also setting standards within the company for social standards, workplace security and environmental protection. Alongside membership in the BCI, the company has permanently invested in recycling. Polyester is produced from recycled plastic bottles and biomass instead of oils or fossil fuels; organic materials such as cashew nut shells and raw sugar pulp are used in the production processes. As a result, the company reduced their monthly carbon dioxide emissions by about 10,000 tons.

    Speed to Deliver Offensive

    The company is not wanting in its ability to serve different markets of the world with a speedy delivery service that ensures that clients can respond to the latest fashion changes. Vicunha has currently a market break up as :

    It has a large warehouse in Europe to serve its clients with a quick delivery service and now the company has set its sight on the growing denim apparel region of South Asia – Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India. The company just announced setting up of a 500,000 mtrs warehouse at Sri Lanka which will be able to deliver fabrics within 7 days of order to this region.  Thomas Dislich says :

    “This strategic and very advantageous positioning makes us very flexible for the Asian market, especially for Bangladesh, one of the main production locations for Western brands and verticals. Goods can be delivered by ship less than seven days after they are ordered,” says Thomas Dislich.

    For the upcoming Denim by Première Vision in Paris, from November 30th to December 1st, 2011, the Brazilian denim giant shows their “lifestyle” colors with a new stand concept, as at the previous fair.
