In 109 pages of the report, the company has reported its efforts towards sustainability and also the future plans to enlarge the ambit of sustainability in its entire supply chain. Before we move towards the key highlights of this report, let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s look at some key figures of H&amp;M below. Currently, the company operates in 71 markets with 4968 physical stores and have online shopping facility in 47 markets which collectively bring 22,696 million USD of net sales. The company is currently working with 2383 factories globally and has claimed to 800 million customers on an annual basis.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denimsandjeans.com\/recovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/HM-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"H&amp;M Sustainability Report\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.denimsandjeans.com\/recovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/HM-1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"H&amp;M Sustainability Report\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2018\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As stated in the report, the company has categorized its vision and strategy under the following three key ambitions:<\/p>\n<h4>100% LEADING THE CHANGE<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Promote and scale innovation<\/li>\n<li>Drive transparency<\/li>\n<li>Reward sustainable actions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>100% CIRCULAR &amp; RENEWABLE<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>A circular approach to how products are made and used<\/li>\n<li>Use only recycled or other sustainably sourced materials<\/li>\n<li>A climate positive value chain<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>100% FAIR &amp; EQUAL<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Fair jobs for all<\/li>\n<li>Inclusion and diversity<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote>\n<h2><em>&#8220;From the beginning, our role has been to democratize fashion. We will continue our work to lead the change towards a sustainable fashion industry&#8221;, says Anna Gedda, Head of Sustainability H&amp;M Group.<\/em><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denimsandjeans.com\/recovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/111.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; float: right; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"H&amp;M Sustainability Report\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.denimsandjeans.com\/recovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/111_thumb.png\" alt=\"H&amp;M Sustainability Report\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2018\" width=\"800\" height=\"427\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">FACTORS OF <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-large;\">S<\/span>USTAINABILITY<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><u><span style=\"color: #008040;\">RE<\/span>CYCLING<\/u> <\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"justify\">As per the released report, the company claimed to recycle <span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u>57%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> of all materials used during the course of production\/manufacturing in 2018 which is<span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u> 23%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> more than what they had last year. So far as the recycling of cotton is concerned, it reached <strong><u><span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\">95%<\/span><\/u><\/strong> and the company is targeting for 100% for next year. The report further stated that, approx. <strong><span style=\"color: #008040;\">20,649<\/span><\/strong> tonnes of textiles were collected for reuse and recycling through their collecting initiative which is <span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u>16%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> more than last year and represents the equivalent of <strong><span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\">103 million<\/span><\/strong> T-shirts. The company also managed to reduce the carbon emission by <span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u>11%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> from the year 2017 and as per the report, the group set new goals of reducing absolute GHG-emissions in the company&#8217;s own operations by another <span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u>40%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> by 2030.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Not only production but H&amp;M has also reportedly set a new goal of using either <span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u>100%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> recycled or sustainably sourced materials for all kind of packaging by 2030. The group has also created a roadmap to save the consumption as well as to re-use wastewater, which will be supported by WWF, and the target would be to reduce the water usage by <span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u>25%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> in production and to recycle <span style=\"color: #008040; font-size: large;\"><strong><u>15%<\/u><\/strong><\/span> of wastewater back into production processes by 2022.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em>&#8220;Recycled materials are truly a win-win: they stop waste material from going to landfill and reduce the use of virgin raw materials. However, for many types of textiles, viable recycling solutions either do not exist or are not commercially available on a large scale. We are therefore collaborating with scientists and innovators to tackle this change, but at the same time working to increase other sustainably sourced materials as quickly as possible&#8221;, says Cecilia Br\u00c3\u00a4nnsten, Environmental Sustainability Manager H&amp;M Group.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denimsandjeans.com\/recovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/322.png\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px currentcolor; float: left; display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"H&amp;M Sustainability Report\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.denimsandjeans.com\/recovery\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/322_thumb.png\" alt=\"H&amp;M Sustainability Report\u00e2\u20ac\u201c2018\" width=\"800\" height=\"447\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><u>TRANSPA<span style=\"color: #008040;\">RE<\/span>NCY<\/u><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Taking the entire narrative of Transparency to a different level, according to the report , later in April, H&amp;M and H&amp;M Home will add more information to its products on hm.com, enabling customers to find out in which factory their favorites products were produced, as well as further information on material composition and solutions for re-using and recycling products that are worn-out.<\/p>\n<p>The group has also launched <strong><span style=\"color: #008040;\">The Take Care Concept<\/span><\/strong> in further four markets, offering customers guidance, repair services, and products to care for their garments so they can live a longer life. The company has invested a lot of resources in the Artificial Intelligence to ensure the effectiveness in the entire supply chain and also to make it easier to ensure a good match between production and demand, thus saving energy, transport, and resources.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Big change requires bold actions and the courage to aim high. So if we want to make a real change, we have to be brave, push the boundaries and not be afraid to fail.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d ANNA GEDDA, HEAD OF SUSTAINABILITY, H&amp;M GROUP<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">EQUAL AND FAIR PAY<\/span><\/u><\/h4>\n<p>For a fair pay, the group has launched <span style=\"color: #008040;\"><strong>Fair Living Wage Strategy<\/strong><\/span>, under which the company set some targets last year and the result of which has been published in this report. Here is what their\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 target and result :<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Goal<\/b><\/span>: Ensure that supplier factories producing 50% of H&amp;M Group\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s product volume are implementing improved Wage Management Systems by 2018.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>Result<\/b><\/span>: Exceeded the goal. 67% of their product volume is made in factories that are implementing improved Wage Management Systems. This covers 500 factories and about 635,000 workers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>Goal<\/b><\/span>: Ensure that supplier factories producing 50% of H&amp;M Group\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s product volume have democratically-elected worker representation in place by 2018.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Result<\/span>: <\/b> Exceeded the goal. 73% of their production volume is made in factories that have democratically-elected worker representatives in place. This covers 594 factories and about 840,000 workers.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Goal<\/span>: <\/b>Ensure that 100% of supplier factories In Bangladesh have democratically-elected worker representation in place by 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Result<\/span>: <\/strong>Reached this goal ahead of schedule. 100% of their tier 1 supplier factories in Bangladesh had democratically-elected worker representation by December 2017.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Goal<\/span>: <\/b>90% of business partners should regard H&amp;M Group as a fair business partner by 2018.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Result<\/span>: <\/b>Reached this goal, 93% of their business partners see H&amp;M Group as a fair business partner by 2018.<\/p>\n<p>With such encouraging results, now the company is also focusing on building industry collaborations. Therefore, a conglomerate of <em><strong>22 brands<\/strong>, several Industries, a global trade union representing the textile workers, have been formed which will come together within the collaboration platform<\/em>. The objective is to create a ground-breaking system change and to transform the textile industry by promoting collective bargaining agreements, that are supported by brands&#8217; responsible purchasing practices. The brands within this arrangement have signed a <strong>Memorandum of Understanding<\/strong> which commits them to ensure that their purchasing practices facilitate the payment of a living wage.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;The fact that 22 global brands have come together to tackle the issue of wages in the textile industry makes ACT a really ground-breaking coalition. It&#8217;s a true game-changer for the industry, paving the way for collective bargaining agreements and making it possible to find solutions at industry level which will stand the test of time.
