We had a page for linking the top denim brands worldwide . However, it was not sufficient as it provided only links to the sites of these brands. Hence we decided to create a separate section altogether for the brands worldwide.

We have just completed the phase I of the project and you can browse through the list of denim brands in some of the countries. We have mainly taken brands which have originated in a particular country. Eg. though Levi’s is sold around the world, it will be listed under ‘Denim Brands in USA’ . You can easily browse through the brands in different countries and get details like :

1. Brief Description of the brand.
2. Address
3. Email / Phone / Fax Numbers – wherever availalable.
4.Website Address
5. Latest News : This is an innovative feature which enables you to see the latest news on the brand (wherever there is a news).

Let me explain stepwise :

Step 1 – Open the Top Denim Brands Page

Open the section by clicking on this link , you will find the option to select the country for which you may see the denim brands for . Select a country or just click on the link on the countries that are given below to checkout the brands in that country.

Step 2 – List of Brands In A Country

You will see the list of brands in a particular country . It would look something like this.

Step 3 – Get The Details Of A Brand

On the brand details page, you will find on the left panel , the details like Description , Address, Email , Website etc . See here

In many cases, you might also find the latest news related to the brand under the heading ‘Related News’. See below :

Since this is a beta launch, there could be some errors or misses . Please bear with us and send us your comments if you find anything amiss.

Hope you like you our new initiative .

Once again here is the LINK TO THE TOP DENIM BRAND SECTION.

The Sixty group had previously entered into a pact with the Reliance Brands in 2007 , but which was later called off. Reliance, however, entered into a 49:51 joint venture with Diesel to launch the Diesel brand in India. Interestingly, Diesel had called off their pact with Arvind to enter into a deal with Reliance Brands. Arvind is entering into a deal with Sixty group when all is not well there . It has recently closed half of its 20 Miss Sixty stores in the US and is entering bankruptcy procedures in the UK after having lost Euro 19.5 million in 2008.

Sixty group is one of the most famous denim brands from Europe and of course Italy. It owns brands like Energie, Miss Sixty , Killah, Refrigiwear , Murphy & Nye, Richlu and Baracuta. Out of these brands, Miss Sixty -the women’s denim brand established in 1991 – and Energie – the men’s lifestyle brand started in 1989 – are the most famous ones. It is expected that Arvind would first launch the Energie brand in India to enter the men’s premium and super premium denim segments and with prices starting from Rs3,500 ($78 approx) . These prices would be above that of Levi’s which operates in the price segment of Rs 1200 to Rs 3000 ($26 to $66) but way below that of Diesel which has prices starting from Rs 8000($177 approx.) .

Arvind owns denim brands like Flying Machine, Ruf & Tuf and New port – all of which cater to lower priced segments of the market. Arvind’s JV with VF also enables it sell the Lee and Wrangler jeans in India and compete in the same price segment as that of Levi’s. Hence, covering the lower and the middle segments of the market, Arvind was in need of a denim brand which could be positioned in the super-premium category. Hence the efforts to tie up with Diesel and now Sixty Group. Arvind has been trying hard to gain a larger share of the continously growing organised denim market in India(currently estimated at around $450million) , but it still lags behind the market leader Levi’s which is already touching a turnover of $100 million.

Diesel Vs Sixty

Diesel has a very high brand recall value in India as compared to Sixty. Reliance Brands will not have to invest much in creating brand awareness for Diesel in India whereas Arvind will have to invest a sizeable amount of resources in developing the awareness for Energie or other Sixty brands. Even though priced much lower than Diesel , Arvind will have to work hard to prove the worth of the brand to Indian consumers. Though its experience of handling other international brands and its huge denim infrastructure back-up will come in good use to this end, it seems that Arvind will be able to reap the benefits of this association only after a couple of years .

Madura Garments of the AV Birla Group is withdrawing its – Mid to Premium priced – Jeans brand SF Jeans from the market.
This brand , despite a fast growing Denim market in India , clocked only about Rs 20 Crore(USD4.5 million approx.) in the domestic market even after 4-5 years of operation. On the other hand, the other brands of Madura (in shirtings mainly) like Louis Philippe, Van Huesen, Allen Solly and Peter England are likely to touch high turnovers of about Rs 200 crores(USD 45 million approx.)

I think, it needs to be assessed why the Denim Brands by Indian Corporates have not enjoyed too much success. We also have the example of Arvind Garment brands like ‘Flying Machine’ , KG denim garment brand ‘Trigger’ and some other brands who have not enjoyed the success in the market despite a Booming denim market. But many of the International brands like ‘Levi’s’, ‘Wrangler (handled by Arvind)’ seem to be doing well.On the other hand,we have seen the success of a brand like ‘Killer’ from the medium sized Keval Kiran & Co., and some lower end brands like ‘Flu’ which enjoy substantial turnovers in the Northern markets.

Is it because:
The Indian Corporates are not able to focus on establising them in the consumer psyche ?
Or is it because of incorrect price points ?
Or is it because that the flexibility required to maintain the freshness of Denim brands is difficult for Indian Corporates to achieve?
Or the consumers are more oriented towards International brands which they perceive to be better?

The actual answer may be a mix of some of these reasons. It would be interesting to note how Arvind would be relaunching its ‘Flying Machine’ brand and to what extent it goes successful…
