G-star took all aspects  including the number of dips in indigo, the tightness of the weaving, and fading experiments. That is also why none of  RAW Mazarine fabric is alike and has multiple shades; it reflects the research conducted to recreate this fabric.

Pure Indigo blue color has been used for centuries to dye wool, silk and cotton products and of course denim . The traditional indigo blue color gives out a resplendent blue tone and is markedly reddish blue in color. We have been seeing this color ever since we lay our eyes on ‘Jeans’-  the traditional day to day jeans blue ..

Denim brands today are looking to differentiate themselves on various levels – whether its quality of fabric, wash, styling or their marketing . However, one of the key elements of this differentiation is now the cool and numerous SHADES OF INDIGO.. Deep dark indigo is still fascinating for the denim enthusiast. But  keeping the tradition of versatility, many new colors of denim are fascinating the consumers.

These new shades can be seen at various catwalks and also in look books and stores of some of the famous brands. These shade range from bright royal blues to dark and dusky dark overcast blues. Lets have  a look below at some of the looks from brands like Nudie Jeans , Mavi , J Brand etc..

This jeans and jacket duo from Mavi has that sky  blue bright cast giving a totally different flavour to the indigo.

This heavy rigid super dark indigo from Nudie jeans is just an example of how the one end of indigo spectrum might look like when it goes real deep and dark.

Soorty Denim – Nature’s Beauty

While these trends are getting hot, the denim mills are not resting on their laurels. Their product development departments are working overtime to create new colors – new looks and hence the new shades of Indigo. We look below at some of the latest shades in indigo from Soorty denim of Pakistan. Their AW 14/15 collection has some interesting shades categorized as

1)Volcano…

2)Chlorophyll…

3)Blue Flag…

As the names indicate , these are different shades within indigo  closely resembling their names. During the recent Denim by PV show, companies like Soorty updated their color palette with a new collection “Nature’s Beauty”

This collection  has new colors inspired by nature’s beauty. Soorty’s  R & D department has this to say about the “Nature’s Beauty” color collection:

“…It has been one of the best sellers in the last PV and people are also asking them in summer collection. What does this trend indicate? It indicates the changing mood of today’s consumer. The willingness to accept innovation is increasing and now suppliers can show off their new collection with less fear of consumer rejection. Each of these shade has its own indigo story to tell and washes out totally differently…”.

The company asserts that they are capable of doing many more colours in a wide spectrum of indigo range.

What is Fair Trade ?

To define simply, Fair Trade looks for poverty alleviation and works through three main actors:

• producers located in poor countries.
• organizations that trade, support and usually certify the products and..
• the customers who recognize those products and buy them.

Fair Trade organizations seek to establish a long term relationship with producers. This helps eliminate the uncertainty they usually suffer, either due to lack of access to market information, to erratic prices or to plain abuses from prey middlemen. In this collaborative frame, trading NGOs also provide upfront payment or financing for harvest costs and technical advice for organic farming, for example. Apart from that, Fair traders help their providers when disaster strikes.

How Can  A Product Be Certified As Fair Trade ?

It takes several criteria to certify a product as a Fairtrade one; they include specific quality standards and general requirements like child labor control, gender equity, democratic organization and respect for Nature. This, in turn, renders nice environmental benefits for mother Earth. Once a supporting NGO has checked that criteria are in place, they back the product; some of those products may be marked with a label . Producers start receiving a higher price for their goods… and also a Premium: an extra amount of money intended for community development purposes. 

This way, producers get a wage which is enough for a decent living, community development becomes possible and  consumers can rest assured (by the certifiers) that they are buying a product with no exploitation trail behind.

Cotton is only one of the products to be certified as Fair Trade product. There are a number of "Fair Trade certified label" logos out there, granted by a similar number of organizations. Certifying organizations are the trust builders of this whole system, as in many cases it is those labels which differentiate an ordinary product from a Fair Trade one. Fair trade logo’s are issued by a number of organizations for a number of products. Some of these are :

This is the most common logo in Europe, adopted in 2003 by most countries (spanish version shown); it is granted by the Fair Trade labelling organizations international (aka FLO), based in Germany and who also runs the Fair Trade register. FLO is the umbrella for all the world labeling initiatives

Fair Trade Certified â„¢ logo granted by TransFair, an USA based organization which certifies lots of products, mainly food. They have a specialized certification procedure for each of them.

Now Coming To Fair Trade Cotton ;  What , How And Where ?

FLO releases a standard for seed cotton  which gives the minimum requirements for that cotton seed . This has benefited farmers to grow better crops under security and now farmers in various countries  are receiving  higher than in the conventional market. Like other Fair Trade certification criteria, that for cotton encourages certified producers to diversify their crops, both for their food security

So basically, Fair trade cotton is a cotton which is upto at least certain standard, which is not made by exploitative means and provides value to the producers by way of security and higher prices and to consumers by way of assurance that the product does not have exploitative trail.

Now coming back to our main story – Topshop has recently announced that it is using Fair Trade Cotton for its mainline Moto Denim Collection .The capsule collection introduces new shapes including the ultimate mini hot pant in bleached out and dark denims. This will encourage other denim retailers to get into Fair Trade cotton for denim products and enable better realizations for the producers and themselves.

Topshop is not alone in the Fair Trade game. Sainsbury’s has announced that it will source all of its Fairtrade cotton from a cooperative supplier in Gujarat, India. With over 890 stores, Sainsbury is the world’s largest retailer of Fair Trade products – though most are food products.

Ninad Gupte, from the Project Executive Body Agrocel in India  said: "Sainsbury’s is the largest consumer of Fairtrade cotton from our projects in Gujarat. Cotton prices are very unstable so guaranteeing our farmers a minimum price and pre-financing the Fairtrade social premium, offers security that has not been possible in the past. Through this initiative, our farmers cooperative body has been able to improve conditions by investing in projects like providing clean drinking water and health check ups."

Liz Jarman, Sainsbury’s Head of Fairtrade said:

"Clothing is a major feature of Sainsbury’s Fairtrade offer and we are proud to be supporting cotton farmers in a way which has not been seen before. Sainsbury’s sell an average of 250 Fairtrade t-shirts per hour, which means a total Fairtrade premium of $250,000 per year to benefit cotton farmers in Gujarat."

This initiative will benefit over 1200 farmers in Gujarat , India.

It also needs to be mentioned that the Fair Trade fortnight will take place from Feb 28 to 13th March and  Asos, Topshop and Marks & Spencer besides  others will take part in the same. The initiative, which will be running from 28th February to 13th March, is called ‘Show off your label’ and will include a customer participation page on Facebook.

Did you have a look at the Diesel Flash for Fun Collection ?

Well, if you play hard in the day and are a party guy at night and do not take time to change in between, this collection can be interesting for you .

The collection features glow-in-the-dark jeans which look perfectly normal during the day and it is only under the UV lights that they glow. Diesel has been making a lot of shirts and T-shirts with glow-in-the-dark features. But this collection is slightly different as it reveals extremely bright details of stitching , graphics etc during the night. A special fluorescent coating designed to glow under UV lights is laid on some parts of the jeans eg stitches, back pockets etc and it helps those parts to glow . Hidden graphics like ‘Dragons’ are revealed on the backpockets during the night.

The concept behind this collection was headed by Creative Director, Wilbert Das. Priced at around $120 Flash For Fun pieces are intended for nightlife lovers.

I think Diesel has timed this collection well in these times of economic recession . These jeans double up as day and night(club) clothing – saving some money for the users. If this collection is successful, it will encourage some more brands to follow suit.

NO.1 SPECIAL

No1Special is unsanforized japanese selvage denim woven by Kaihara Corps Ltd. Unsanforized denim is the most authentic cloth, as used on the very earliest jeans. It has a slightly hairy surface and the warp and weft yarns are quite loose. When washed for the first time, the denim will shrink because it is not sanforized. Another effect would be that the legs would skew. Though highly undesirable to many users, skewing is a sign of Vintage Jeans (remember they did not have sanforizing facilities in the 19th century. The process was invented in 1933 by Sanford Cluett). Buyer has to hot soak the jeans before wearing and they will get to the size he is looking for .

NO. 2

This denim is identical to No1Special, but sanforized – which means that the jeans will not shrink unduly and will hardly have any hair on the surface.Woven in Osaka Japan on half-width shuttle looms with signature pink selvage. No2 is a mid-to heavy-weight 13.7 oz denim and has a deep blue tone with a very slight red cast.
NO. 3

No3 is the original famous Evisu Heritage selvage denim, previously known as D85. It is rope dyed with indigo to an extremely deep blue, almost black tone. No3 can be recognized by the unusual ‘rising’ sun red and white selvage
NO. 4

No4 is something different developed for the Evisu Heritage Spring 2009 collection. The denim is woven from open-end yarn, as against Ring spun traditionally used by Evisu. Open-end yarn denim has a smoother, flatter surface than ring-spun denim. Like all Evisu Heritage denim, No.4 is woven on half-width shuttle looms.
NO13

And if you are looking for softer denim, then No13Left is the one to go for because of its Left hand twill weave . It is a close reproduction of the early denim used by Lee from the 1910s onwards. Left hand twill denim has a twill direction opposite to the right hand twill and is softer because the direction of the fibres aligns with the direction of the twill. No13Left is green caste indigo, and has mismatched selvage: one side is plain white, and the other side has a single warp thread of indigo woven into it, staying true to the specifications of the original Lee version.

Sea Washed(!) : The jeans have been hand washed in the sea and dried on the rocks nearby.This means that the washing effects will be subtle and denim will be hard (no chemicals to soften the denim are used).’Whiskering’ and ‘honeycombing’ will come with time as the jeans wears out..Exclusive tailoring is used whereby each jeans is tailored by a single operator who signs each completed pair(if I am correct -Earnest Sewn also uses such tailoring techniques to ensure quality).
