Denim Exports By Egypt , Tunisia And Morocco To EU : A Comparative Study For The Period 2015-18

Egypt , Morocco and Tunisia are the African countries which have been prominent among the African continent in exporting apparel to EU due to their duty free status . Each of these countries has done very well in the past but due to various reasons of their own had been not able to keep up the pace of exports – specially of denim apparel. Lets try to analyse if they have improved their export status in this industry in some way.
In this report , we have

Analysed the Denim Exports along with average price and growth of Morocco , Tunisia and Egypt towards EU for 2015-18 ( June’18)
Segmented the total denim exports into Women & Men Denim and analysed the same for the aforesaid period .
Comprehensive analysis of growth in the exports of all three countries along with the changes in the average price.

Indonesia Denim Fabric Exports–A Report

Indonesia has a decently developed textile industry and is one of the important countries in the South East Asia producing and exporting textiles and apparel. Indonesia’s garment and apparel sector is highly concentrated on the island of Java, particularly that of West Java and the island of Batam which is a free trade zone. The sector employs 1.3 million people as of 2011 making it one of the most important elements of the country’s manufacturing industry. Some 61% of manufactured garments are exported to international markets as various leading international apparel brands use Indonesia as a manufacturing base for their global exports. USA remains Indonesia’s largest market for garments and textiles accounting for 36% of total exports followed by the EU with 16% and Japan with 5%. The most popular export items from 2007-2011 were woven clothing, underwear and knitted or crocheted clothing which together made up nearly 60% of the total value of textile exports over the aforementioned period (Source: ASEAN Quality Textiles and Garments).

Denim : Indonesia is a country which always had a number of denim mills operating in the country. With a good combination of fabric mills and apparel production capabilities, the denim mills always enjoyed the attention of the world brands and retailers. Now with China getting more expensive, Indonesia is getting a boost in its apparel exports.

In this report we will have a look at some details of denim fabrics exported out of Indonesia to various buyers around the world. The report gives details on exports of denim fabrics from companies in Indonesia to buyers around the world for a period in 2013 including :

Exports Of Denim Fabrics and Apparel From Turkey To USA 2009-2010

Turkey is an important country for denim products – both as an importer and well as an exporter. As an importer, Turkey imports a large amount of fabrics from various Asian countries including India, Pakistan, Indonesia, China etc. As an exporer, Turkey is one of the most important exporter of Denim garments to EU. It has a special relationship with Italy and Turkey has imbibed a lot of Italian denim designing techniques – besides developing their own.

When it comes to US, Turkey has seen a mixed relationship . Whereas the exports from Turkey to US were quite strong , exports of denim jeans have seen a fall in the recent times as US increased its imports from countries like Bangladesh, China , Vietnam, Cambodia etc. However, it was quite interesting to note that the exports of denim fabrics from Turkey to US jumped more than 75% in the first six months of 2010 (Jan-June) as compared to same period in the last year .

Though the total exports of denim fabrics from Turkey to US are still miniscule at about 1 million mtrs p.a , the average prices at which they are exported are quite good indicating . Denim jeans production in US is confined to making expensive premium denim and they require good denim fabrics in small quantities and it is to this market that Turkish denim exporters are catering partly.

Lets see how the exports of denim jeans and other garments from Turkey to US fared during the last one year .

Again the market for Turkish denim garments in US is very small. The reason is probably the prices at which Turkey is able to export its denim jeans . Whereas US imports denim jeans from around the world at an average price of $71.5 ( in 2009) , Turkish prices are averaging about $16 . Turkey is basically catering to a small segment of garment importers who do not want to produce in US and still need to make high quality garments with prices that are much lower than that of Japanese denim or Italian denim . But the trend of exports of Denim fabrics and garments to US from Turkey aligns with the general trend of imports of these products into US. There has been a general increase in imports of denim jeans and fabrics into US indicating a strong trend in denim consumption .

Exports of Denim fabrics from Japan to USA (Years 2000-2007)

It may be interesting to see how much Japan exports to the US and the EU. I did an analysis and here are the results.The results are not very surprising because exports to both the markets show some similar trends.
The year 2004 & 2005 have been the best for exports to both EU and US. Though for exports to US , 2006 has also been the best
The prices have been more or less stable over a period of time . In EU also the prices /kg have been more or less stable and so is the case in US. However, US shows an increase in average prices in 2007
The decline in exports of denim fabrics is visible in 2006 in EU and in 2007 in USA
If we extrapolate the figures of 5 months of 2007 for USA, then approximately 5.5 million square mtrs will be exported to US in 2007 against 6.2 million sq mtrs in 2006.
