The show concluded giving great satisfaction to all the stakeholders . With over 1500 visitors from over 250+ companies from India and overseas at this two days of International Denim Supply Chain show, Denimsandjeans India made a successful debut on their home ground. After running over 9 shows in Bangladesh and Vietnam, the first edition was brought out in India and it was surprisingly the best debut show . It had most of the premium denim companies from India besides many other companies coming from Bangladesh, Turkey, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, Italy, Ethiopia etc as participants. With about 34 companies, the show was a niche boutique show with a very informal,denimish environment!

The organizers received phenomenal response from the visitors. All the major retailers and brands including H&M, Marks & Spencer, VF Corporation (all major divisions) , VF USA , Landmark Group , Li Fung , GAP Inc , Zara , Tesco , Pepe Jeans , Killer Jeans , Spykar , Target , Benetton , V-Mart , Shopper Stop , Reliance Trends , Myntra , Hypercity Retail, ITC Limited , Levis, Marks and Spencer , C&A ,Being Human, Blackberry, Jabong, Pantaloons, Tata Cliq, Tata Trent, FFI, Ajio, Westside, Asmara India , Asmara Bangladesh , Bestseller , Ostin , Mufti, PVH, Aditya Birla Fashion, Arvind Brands, Raymonds Apparels, etc have visited the show. Some of the most reputed factories and exporters including Orient Craft, Gokaldas Exports, Shahi have also visited the show along with their team. Many tier I and tier II brands along with big fabric dealers and distributors have also marked their presence at this show thus providing a complete basket of buyers to the exhibitors . Companies like Hirdaramani and others travelled from overseas to attend the show.

SEMINARS & PRESENTATIONS

Besides the show, some important talks on the latest trends, technologies, sustainability, latest innovation and developments by renowned global experts from Spain and US happened on the both the days. Experts from USA, Spain, Turkey, and Portugal have been invited to take some important denim sessions at the show. The seminars went houseful on the both days and the turnout was so high that the organizers had to make extra arrangements to accommodate the audience. In all the four seminars had over 300 + audience and it made it very encouraging for the speakers to give their best !

On the first day, Stefano Aldighieri – ex-Creative Director of 7 for all Mankind, with his vast international experience, talked about the “Secrets of making a Denim Brand Successful”. He explained the success mantra of some very famous denim brands including 7 For All Mankind during his presentation. He talked about as how important is it to understand the dynamics of market and consumer behaviour before launching a new product.

On the second day, reputed denim product and marketing consultant Dr. Dilek Erik from Turkey shared her ideas on why Rigid denim is coming back but Stretch is still being used. How the lines between menswear and womens wear were being blurred and what role stretch was playing in the same. She also talked about the latest trends in the market for the season AW 18/19.

Vasco Pizarro, Marketing Director at the largest European Laundry spoke about Denim Wash trends from Top European Brands for AW18 season and also showcased some of the amazing developments which they have done for global brands. With over 100,000 garments of wet processing in a day and many more for printing and finishing, Pizarro is a globally reputed and renowned laundry which works for almost all major brands in Europe and US. The production and human processes at the laundry were greatly appreciated by the audience with many flocking to see their garments.

A trend area on the major trends emanating globally created where latest looks in various categories had been also created at the show so that the visitors will be able to savor the latest global looks. Denim market in India is looking up as production and consumption both look up sharply . India is primarily a men’s market with over 80% share . The recent trends in this segment show a big share for Dobby weaves and structures in stretch . Companies have been investing to satisfy the continuous demand for structures denims . Color variations with toppings and bottomings add flavor to these structures . However women’s market is now on the uprise as denims spread to tier 2 and 3 cities with Women and girls shedding cultural inhibitions. Super stretches is the category of women which most brands are now looking to tap Elegant athelisure sportswear look denims are being taken up by brands like Pepe , Levis and others.We are going to see a complete overhaul in the women’s market as the females get more assertive and market share between two sexes is more balanced.

A Fun Evening

After a hard days’ work, the exhibitors and visitors were able to unwind and relax a bit during the Stand up Comedy act by Kunal Rao. Bringing anecdotes from the fashion industry as well as from the our daily lives, the large audience was in splits during the show and fresh for a hefty dinner.

Earlier the show was inaugurated by the Turkish ambassador to Bangladesh H.E Mr. Devrim Öztürk, who was also the Chief Guest. While giving the inaugural address, the Turkish envoy said – “Bangladesh has been able to strengthen its position among the globe’s leading denim product exporting countries”.
Vice president of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) Mr. Fazlul Haque and Vice President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Mr Atique-E- Rabbani were also present at the inauguration. Mr. Haque, said Bangladesh has become the largest supplier of denim apparels to Europe, thereby even surpassing China. The President of BTMA Mr Tapan Choudhary and Chairman of Envoy Textiles Mr Kutub also visited and appreciated the show as their companies were also part of the show. The Brazilian Ambassador Ms. Wanja Campos da Nobrega also visited the show.

Five Fundamental Steps To Create A Sustainable Collection – Lucia Rosin

Bringing the concept of using high technology to add value to the shows, a  live video conference was arranged directly from Italy with Lucia Rosin, A Sustainable Denim Expert. Lucia Talked on the topic – Sustainable Design, Five Fundamental Steps to Create a Sustainable Collection. She also presented one video documentary which she had made especially for this show. The same can be watched here. The increased attention to everything sustainable brings out the attention to this aspect of the show. We shall be coming out with a special post on this presentation.

3000 Year Old : Natural Indigo Dyeing Workshop From Rajasthan, India

Indigo dyeing has been done in countries like China, Indian Sub Continent and other parts of the world. However, it has been preserved well by some artisan families in Rajasthan .  Mr Lal from one such family in Rajasthan  which has been practicing natural indigo and other dyes for over 500 years gave workshop on the process of dyeing . As the workshop started, it turned out to be more interesting and exciting as there’s a magnetic lure to the process of indigo-dyeing by hand – looking at the fabric going from black to green to blue ! . Designers are at it nationally and globally, and retail players peddle hard-to-resist indigo collections. The magic stays until the fabric is put to wash. The color runs, and runs some more, with each wash. The workshop was also broadcasted live by the organizers and it received global response.

“The growing interest in indigenous hand-woven fabrics and techniques in recent years has brought indigo to the mainstream and this live workshop is our small effort in attaching this art to global denim industry “, said Mr Sandeep Agarwal.

In the evening, the we arranged a Village Set-up for exhibitors and buyers along with the live performance of Traditional Musical Instruments by Bangladeshi Artists which complemented the Vintage theme of the show. The evening was also special as the winners of the 2^nd Bangladesh Fashion Students’ Denim Design Contest were awarded along with their mentors and college principals. Vice President of BGMEA Mr Faruque Hassan distributed the prizes of 25,000TK, 15000Tk and 10,000TK to the winning students of the Denim design contest which was held in 5^th Edition of the show. Also present at the prize distribution were the Vice Chancellor of SMUCT Mr Prof Dr. Quazi MD. Mofizur Rahman, Chairman of INIFD Ms Sharmeen Hassan, CEO of INIFD Mr. Najmus Ahmed and NIFT Professor Md. Jahangir Karim.

“Denim: Fashion’s Frontier” not only examines the 175 year history of denim as well as the exhibition features more than 70 objects from the museum’s permanent collection which have never been showcased yet. Newly acquired pieces from designers like Sacai,Chloe and Dries Van Noten along with the various workwear pieces dating back to 1840s as well as more recent high fashion items will be showcased in this exhibit. In addition to the history of jeans, Denim examines a variety of denim garments—from work wear to haute couture—in order to shed new light on how a particular style of woven cotton has come to dominate the clothing industry and the way people dress around the globe.

The exhibition also takes a look at the 1960s hippies’ use of denim — embroidered and patched denim, bellbottom jeans — as well as the advent of “designer” jeans as examplified by Calvin Klein Jeans and their controversial commercials back in the 1980s.

Denim: Fashion’s Frontier” will run through May 7, 2016.

Our exhibitors brought out their latest pieces under various categories and displayed their looks for SS’16 and late AW’15 seasons.

We had some great seminars at the show by Vasco Pizarro of Pizarro Laundry Portugal (one of the most reputed laundry in Europe) and Zafer Bozdag from Turkey. Vasco spoke about the “European Denim Washing Looks SS’16” .

Zafer Bozdag, who is associated with denim industry for over 25 years, gave a presentation on the topic “ Cotton to Denim – A Journey in Last 20 years’ . We shall cover their seminars in a separate detailed post .

Visitors had some great fun with our DENIM CHALLENGE – that we specially created for this show. The denim quiz which left many denim heads scratching their heads, had some great participation and fun as visitors lined up to test their denim IQ and win a prize !

Bangladesh has become the favorite destination of the retailers and brands worldwide . While , a few years back, the country was known more as a origin for sourcing cheap garments, it has quickly scaled up the value chain and is also producing value added jeans and apparel using skills and technology from around the world. The country is not only able to import fabrics and accessories from factories around the world, but its textile industry base is increasingly supporting its garment export sector. Its current denim fabric production covers about 40% of its requirements.

Some figures related to denim exports from Bangladesh from our data section . ” While Bangladesh exported about 74 million pieces of denim apparel to US in 2013, it shipped around 140 million pieces of jeans to Europe. It was actually the largest exporter of men’s jeans to Europe in 2013 with 89 million pcs compared to 65 million pcs from China. Also notable is the growth achieved in exporting these products in 2013 despite a lot of disturbances. The denim apparel exports from Bangladesh surged by 11.48% to US in 2013 over 2012 and to EU by over 19.65% in the same period . This is not a mean achievement and speaks volumes about the efforts put in by the garment and textile industry of Bangladesh and the continued trust reposed by the buyers”.
