During our Denimsandjeans Japan event on 1-2nd Nov, our team visited the famous Kapital – one of the most famous boutique denim brands from Japan . A small family-run company named Kapital is producing highly valued clothing that redefines what it means to wear denim in the Japanese countryside. Kapital has constantly emphasized the exclusive use of hand processes since its establishment in 1984, developing and producing all procedures manually , including thread dying, material fabrication, stitching, washes, and embellishment. Their unusual designs, expert craftsmanship, and meticulous manual finishing are well known across the world.

The way that the leftover denim is displayed on the wall is unique but appealing. The doors and racks are constructed from discarded, unwanted pieces of wood that have been arranged to look as though they have always been there. Their vibrant, fun, and stylish inventory mesmerized us and just spruced up our everyday shopping for clothes.

Reconstructed denim served as inspiration for the store’s design. A traditional Japanese residence decorated for a tea ceremony served as the location of one of the Kapital stores in Ebisu. In particular we visited the KAPITAL LEGS – the store dedicated to everything in denim. Each of their stores has a distinctive personality. Some require you to take off your shoes before you enter. Others are crammed together like an American vintage shop with strange artifacts from the Kapital archive heaped high and Ebisu store was one of them. It’s utterly original, unlike anything else, but curiously familiar.

East Meets West Design

https://www.instagram.com/reel/Clinvc7PWUD/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The brand faced a huge transformation when Kiro, Toshikiyo’s son, chose to leave Kojima to pursue his education in America in 1996. Kapital underwent a significant transition and was influenced by the Americana movement in 1996. The EAST MEETS WEST fusion concept, a blending of Japanese and Western designs, is introduced by this artistic Japanese brand called Kapital.

Natural dyes and traditional Japanese Sashiko, Boro stitching and repairs are hallmarks of this exquisite brand. KAPITAL’s areas of expertise are processing and stitching , and very few businesses worldwide are able to do both tasks. The stitching technique -Sashiko – has been used for more than 400 years. Tradition dictates that lines and designs are created with a running stitch and white cotton thread. Typically, indigo blue traditional cloth would be used for this.

KAPITAL began by making jeans, but they now produce a wide range of products, primarily apparel made of denim. With a few exceptions, all KAPITAL products are produced at the company’s factories, including shoes, and accessories. Whether you’re looking for everyday clothing or festival attire for the summer, you can find it there. And the prices are not sky high when you consider the Japanese yen today !

Since 1981, Tonello has led the world in garment finishing technology, helping to make Italy a success story around the globe. It works side by side with its customers, establishing a connection between the stylists and the businesses working on, dying, and completing the clothing thanks to its cutting-edge machinery and one-of-a-kind service. Tonello is regarded as the industry standard for garment finishing, having sold more than 9000 machines globally.

With Tonello joining the first Denimsandjeans Show in Japan, we spoke to Alice Tonello about the history and focus of Tonello during the Japan show.

Tonello Is One of the Oldest Denim Washing Machine Makers in Europe. Can You Share Some Important Milestones in Your Progress?

The company’s official founding year was 1981, which means we recently celebrated our first 40 years in business. However, the company’s founder, Osvaldo Tonello, as well as my uncle, had started laying the groundwork and working under his own name as early as 1975. After that it was a succession of research, experimentation and launching innovations.

Among the milestones, certainly in 1985, with the G1 300, the definitive consecration of the open drum, front opening machine, with front inclination: a revolutionary technology also from the point of view of water saving, compared to previous belly machines. And all this at a time in history when the word “sustainability” was not yet known. It was more about efficiency. Later, in the late 1980s/early 1990s, the first robots for automated spraying and scratching of garments. They marked an incredible revolution for the industry at that time. Then, the first laser in the market, in 1995, and other iconic and successful technologies still to follow, such as Batik and ozone. 1997 represents another important date for us, namely the founding of our research and development center. Even then, in fact, we understood the importance of offering our customers a service that was much more than just selling the machine. Even today, this area is among the most strategic and important for the company.

To make a long story short, and come to the present day, in 2017 we launched the Creative Area as part of the R&D center. A gathering place between designers, brands, manufacturers. A space in which to discuss, inform, learn, update and compare with those who live the world of textiles and fashion every day. But the news does not stop there. More things are on the way that will definitely mark our calendars.

Your First Laser Machine Was Made in 1995. That Was Really Too Early! Did the Industry Understand the Importance of the Same At That Point of Time.

You are right, when we launched the laser technology, the market was definitely not ready for such a revolution. In fact, it is undisputed today the operational, creative and safety advantage that the laser can bring to any laundry. However, in the 1990s, the technology was still in its early days, as were the effects it produced: far too flat and fake for a market that was daily in search of the most authentic vintage looks. In fact, it was the brands then that rejected the laser, precisely because of its inability to create truly interesting effects, continuing to prefer traditional techniques such as manual scraping.

Luckily, over the years, the technology has evolved, and today it is an established practice in many garment finishing processes. Indeed, it allows the creation of automated vintage effects, as well as the creation of prints, graphics, and cuts, in total safety. It also ensures high reproducibility and productivity.

In addition, it creates a new work figure, that of the laser designer, much less “physical” and more focused on the creative side.

Japan is a Different Kind of Market. What Will be Your Focus During Your Participation in Denimsandjeans Show There on Nov 1&2

Japan is certainly a unique market, but already some customers and brands are working with our technologies. In any case, we will present our latest technological innovations to the Japanese market to achieve unique aesthetics and effects in a totally responsible manner.

Examples are Wake, the first 100% natural dyeing system since it uses only vegetable waste; O-Zone, the static cabinet that uses ozone to achieve special effects such as localized discolorations, degrade and sun-bleached effects; and OBleach, the patented process that enables authentic bleach effects without using hazardous chemicals but, again, with only ozone.

It will also be the perfect opportunity to present our brand new Evolution 3 range.

The Key Focus of All Denim Manufacturers Today is To Somehow Reduce Environmental Impact. What Do You Think Has Been Your Contribution Towards This Goal?

As mentioned earlier, for us, reduction in the consumption of resources such as water, energy, emissions and in the use of chemicals has always been the mantra guiding our activity. And this is from the early days of the company, when sustainability was not as in vogue as it is now and some of our customers were not even interested in saving water. It is a daily challenge for us, and we never stop trying to improve. One example is that of our most iconic products, washing and dyeing machines, which after years of refinement we have revamped and launched as the big news of 2022. It is called Evolution 3 and is the new generation of Tonello washing and dyeing machines.

In the Evolution 3, the tried and tested machine construction allows for maximum optimization of water use during each type of process, as well as huge energy savings guaranteed by several improvements. All this guarantees reductions in energy consumption of up to 20 percent compared to previous models, a reduction in overall operating costs and to have greater competitiveness in an increasingly unpredictable market.

In 1950s , years after the war , some stores in Tokyo specialized in reselling American military garments. One such store – MARUSERU in Tokyo’s Ameyoko district , was specializing in the same. During these years, American soldiers would pay pan pan girls in old clothing rather than in cash and these girls would immediately rush to stores like Maruseru to sell them off. And many of these would be the Blue Jeans ! In absence of a better description, Hiyama – the owner of Ameyoko stores , named them as G.I.Pants and shortened to jipan (G-Pan) . And these jeans became a big part of Maruseru’s sales. They used to buy a pair of these jeans at 300-500Yen and resell at over 3000 Yen ! . To put this into perspective, the price of Uniqlo jeans in Japan currently ranges between 3000-4000 yen !! And the jeans would sell out before price tags were put on them . Many boxes sent from US to their family members in Japan used to be wrapped in torn-up jeans as packaging material. The stores hired trailers to redo these jeans and make them sellable and even these would sell out immediately !
The new jeans were still not available in Japan and people longed for jeans what they saw in American movies – something very crisp and fresh. The import regulations did not allow new jeans to be imported for some years but when in 1957, the imports opened up, there was a flood of newly stitched jeans as big traders jumped the opportunity to import newly stitched jeans .

This is what proved to be anti climax. The newly imported jeans were not worn , were stiff and dark and did not seem to be close to what the Japanese were used to looking at as jeans. The old used jeans still continued to outsell the newly stitched jeans by 10 to 1 and at a higher price . This is when some innovative people like Yasushiko Kobayashi from Men’s Club did his own home laundry washing and manual scraping to get some effects and get the jeans close to what it looked like in the movies !

The business was getting affected by cheap imitations, high price and other inconsistencies. This is when Maruo clothing President Ozaki decided to try to make the first Japanese jeans and started dissecting American jeans closely. To their surprise , they found that the indigo did not go deep inside the yarns of the jeans and the core was left white. While the Japanese were adept at Indigo dyeing for thousands of years, they dyed the cloths multiple times saturating the core also with the indigo . At that time , it looked impossible to achieve that look and Ozaki decided to import fabrics directly from USA. And this started the journey which brought the first few thousand yards of American denim fabric to Japan in 1965 from Canton Mills. But when the factory workes started to stitch the jeans , they found that it was impossible to stitch into such a hard fabric . Besides, the orange thread , zippers and rivets were also special and not to be found locally.

The story and plot gets more interesting . Lets catch up for more in the 2nd part of Japanese denim story .
And for our love of all things denim and Japanese, our next denim show will be in Japan on Nov 1-2 . Do visit the show to meet some exclusive Japanese and International companies and get the flavor of Japanese denim.
GSRR TRIPLE A STRAIGHT JEANS

The GSRR Triple-A jeans offer a new, yet timeless fit that’s sitting higher on the body with a regular straight leg from the thigh down. This pair of jeans is designed with 6 pockets, whereas the coin pocket is placed concealed and an additional back pocket is created inside.

MATERIAL

ATAMI SELVEDGE DENIM

This style is cut from a 3×1 right-hand Japanese twill denim with a selvedge, where the raw edges are finished with a binding.

Medium weight 11 oz denim

3×1 Twill

100% Cotton

Japanese Selvedge Denim

The new silhouette featuring a raised waist and classic proportions, harking back to jeans from the late 70s and early 80s. The result is denim with a beautiful dry modern hand. Details include silicone-injected pocket elements, bonded pocket tops, and “blind” stitch-less pocket seams. Its rich ecru selvedge denim is contrasted by black pocket linings, gloss-black shank buttons and black interior chain-stitching. As well as a silicone grip print in the waistband.

GSRR SELVEDGE DENIM JACKET

Selvedge denim jacket GSRR offers a detachable liner. Both can be worn solely as well. Snaps at the back neck and lower sleeve attach both pieces together. The jacket has deep chest pockets with a flap and incorporated side pockets. A graphic printed stripe is applied to the upper body and sleeves. The liner shows a woven tape detail at the neck and has a wrap-around tape belt. An inner pocket is added.

ATAMI SELVEDGE DENIM

This style is cut from a 3×1 right-hand Japanese twill denim with a selvedge, where the raw edges are finished with a binding. A dual-layered cropped jacket of 11oz Japanese selvedge denim, inspired by a lightweight battle-dress jacket from the 1930s. The detachable 100% linen chambray liner with raw-edge details, doubles as a shirt. The liner shows a woven tape detail at the neck and has a wrap-around tape belt. An inner pocket is added.

A two-piece sleeve provides a more refined shape than a one-piece sleeve. The extra seam is an added shaping opportunity, as it offers twice as many seams to adjust for a better fit.

Continuing our series of talks during our current COVID 19 times, Sandeep Agarwal speaks to Katsu Manabe from Momotaro Group,Japan and he shares his thought on how the current situation is evolving and how it is affecting and will affect our industry in the future. With a special emphasis on situation in Japan, Katsu Manabe shares his views.

Sandeep:
Hi Katsu, Welcome to our Instagram Live, How are you and how is the situation in Japan?
Katsu:

We are still working and taking care. But situation is still getting worse and government is taking more measures now.
Sandeep:
So currently you are not in lockdown and you are still going to your offices and still working?

Katsu:
Yes, most of them go and working.

Sandeep:
What about the stalls and shops everything is open still ?

Katsu:
Yeah, many stay open

Sandeep:
Okay, so how do you think this situation of Coronavirus is affecting your business specially in denim sector in Japan?

Katsu:
The situation is quite hard on workers. For us , we need to decide ourselves. The govt is not supporting the business , they can’t guarantee the benefits , therefore most of the people need to decide themselves. People are visiting head offices stores in Okayama , which is on outskirts of Tokyo . Many people are not going to the other stores so right now we closed the store for cleanups.

Sandeep:
So , the jeans street is still working and on with many stores open.?

Katsu:
Yes, it is open. In March and April, most of the people want to change the clothing and enjoy the spring summer season. Many people are still preferring to stay home , but due to long holidays of students and younger generation , they tend to go out for clothing and shopping. So we still have some sale.

Sandeep:
It is a cherry blossom time in Japan this time. It is very pity that in such a beautiful environment in Japan , people have to stay inside.

Katsu:
Yes it is blossom season in Japan but very few people are going out.

Sandeep:
I think you also have good business in China, Europe and US -probably the most Japanese companies have . Is it closed in terms of business and
China was also closed and it is opening a little now so international
business for you is also like almost closed or working at some places?

Katsu:
It depends on how the international quarter works for us. Considering some countries, we already have got some heard from them. Some of the stores and countries have asked us to stop .We don’t know what will happen but we can say Europe is worst . We can see most of the countries and cities are lockdown but in Asia and China, some parts like Shanghai still working .It is very difficult time for US as well.

Sandeep:
I’ve been talking to so many different people around the world and they’ve been talking about a lot of changes in fashion even after we come back from this crisis. So do you think from your point of view
there’s going to be a change in terms of fashion from the consumer
point of view.
How people will look forward for new products and like Japanese products
are already season less , they don’t really create work for seasons much but like international brands and also many retailers they work for
seasons so I mean many of them say that the seasons will go out . How do you think your way of working and your consumers will be affected because of this?

Katsu:
Our products which we sell to oversees are mainly the basic and regular items. SO, we are not doing much for the seasons . Of course, the international market is looking for the season fashion. As most of the exhibitions have been cancelled, we need to try hard to get the buyers otherwise it will be very difficult for us.This is the good time for everybody to make the communication online.

Sandeep:
What are the positive things you feel from the situation ? Any positive things which are coming out because every difficult situation also creates some positive things.

Katsu:
As I already told you , we need to decide to change how to communicate. We have to use digital way to communicate with people. The export can be made smoother because we can contact online and can support afterwards also. Secondly, we need to focus on production , because after this many people would have lose their job and it is very difficult. We need to see how this situation can be overcome by making ourselves.

Sandeep:

So any message you want to give to so many people watching this and
anything for the fashion industry specially for our industry.
We already said that we need to go sustainable and any other thing you
would like to say We discussed digital and second thing sustainability and high quality. So any other thing you would like to say?

Katsu:
The industry has to keep going and we have to survive ourselves. The denim business is all around the world ,so people need to enjoy themselves.Stay safe and healthy and enjoy your denim at home.In your lifestyles , if you see denim you will feel good. What we can do is support the people with better life and make them happy .

Sandeep:
You also stay safe and healthy and all the best to your family and the Momotaro group.

Katsu:
We are trying to go home and develop something beneficial digitally for our industry.

KUON is derived from the Japanese words “Kuon”, “Distant past or future” and “Eternity”.The essence of the brand is to pursue a simple, cool, unreasonable style that incorporates the history and culture of used clothes and cloths that exist around the world, but is not bound by its frame and changes over time. The Japanese label highlighted the heritage collection by presenting the Sakiori Weave and Boro Patchwork in the latest SS20 collection. The brand displayed the articles and inspired us by this new look for the season.

The brand is very famous for the Boro work with rags and ran or could be called worn out clothing. KUON is constantly pursuing new fashion and continuing to challenge for new values without being bound by unnecessary nostalgia. The Japanese word sakiori comes from “saki,” which means to tear or rip up, and “ori,” which means weave. “Saki” relates to preparing the fabric by striping it into pieces and “ori” refers to weaving it together. It is the woven art for worn out clothing whereas the Boro textile is the art of patchwork.

Fashion doesn’t have any age and it has never been entangled under any predetermined or pre-defined rules. Breaking the stereotypes as always, Junya Watanabe, the famous Japanese Designer, recently launched his new Fall 2019 Menswear collection with a very subtle message through tag line – Silver Swagger. The launch of collection got to see many senior models aged more than 50 years with loads of swag, ethos and panache walk down the ramp. Junya proves with this collection that men in their later years not have to chose between simplicity or oddity when trying to go on the denim fashion road. Most of the collection is elegant even with patches , designed turnups while some of them are bit experimental . It must have been a treat to watch the models go on the ramp with this collection. Do watch a small video shared my Mr. Tim Blanks on Instagram :

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsxemRJBwFt/

The collection features mostly denim pants and few denim jackets in different fits including slim, wide leg and comfort fit. Denim-Non Denim Patchwork with classic designs on Denim Pants relive 90’s nostalgia while denim trousers with colored bottom edges could be a good pick for contemporary street style lovers . Take a closer look through the gallery below.
