Kapital Ebisu – A Paradise For Denim Aficionados

During our Denimsandjeans Japan event on 1-2nd Nov, our team visited the famous Kapital – one of the most famous boutique denim brands from Japan . A small family-run company named Kapital is producing highly valued clothing that redefines what it means to wear denim in the Japanese countryside. Kapital has constantly emphasized the exclusive use of hand processes since its establishment in 1984, developing and producing all procedures manually , including thread dying, material fabrication, stitching, washes, and embellishment. Their unusual designs, expert craftsmanship, and meticulous manual finishing are well known across the world.

Store Design

The way that the leftover denim is displayed on the wall is unique but appealing. The doors and racks are constructed from discarded, unwanted pieces of wood that have been arranged to look as though they have always been there. Their vibrant, fun, and stylish inventory mesmerized us and just spruced up our everyday shopping for clothes.

Reconstructed denim served as inspiration for the store’s design. A traditional Japanese residence decorated for a tea ceremony served as the location of one of the Kapital stores in Ebisu. In particular we visited the KAPITAL LEGS – the store dedicated to everything in denim. Each of their stores has a distinctive personality. Some require you to take off your shoes before you enter. Others are crammed together like an American vintage shop with strange artifacts from the Kapital archive heaped high and Ebisu store was one of them. It’s utterly original, unlike anything else, but curiously familiar.

The brand faced a huge transformation when Kiro, Toshikiyo’s son, chose to leave Kojima to pursue his education in America in 1996. Kapital underwent a significant transition and was influenced by the Americana movement in 1996. The EAST MEETS WEST fusion concept, a blending of Japanese and Western designs, is introduced by this artistic Japanese brand called Kapital.

Natural dyes and traditional Japanese Sashiko, Boro stitching and repairs are hallmarks of this exquisite brand. KAPITAL’s areas of expertise are processing and stitching , and very few businesses worldwide are able to do both tasks. The stitching technique -Sashiko – has been used for more than 400 years. Tradition dictates that lines and designs are created with a running stitch and white cotton thread. Typically, indigo blue traditional cloth would be used for this.

KAPITAL began by making jeans, but they now produce a wide range of products, primarily apparel made of denim. With a few exceptions, all KAPITAL products are produced at the company’s factories, including shoes, and accessories. Whether you’re looking for everyday clothing or festival attire for the summer, you can find it there. And the prices are not sky high when you consider the Japanese yen today !

Kapita SS21 Lookbook – Vol 1 & Vol 2

KAPITAL, the famous Japanese clothing label, has recently unveiled its Spring Summer 2021 collection in two volumes. Poured in contemporary Japanese aesthetics, the collection includes loose-fit pants, jackets, and ripped denim. Unlike the previous launches of Kapital, both the volume of the SS21 collection didn’t feature the famous traditional Japanese wear Kimono, and also the article with multi-layered constructions have been reduced to the minimum.

The volume 1 is based on darker greys and black tones and more traditional jeans / jacket silhouettes . However, the Volume 2 plays around with styles with oversized jackets, super baggy jeans , sailorman jackets, floral attributes and a lot more . The denim bandana, cap, and denim hat are the most used accessories in the collection.

The collection is up for sale at kapital.jp , little expensive but always a class apart.

Iconic Japanese Denim Makers Kapital have recently unveiled their 2019 August Kountry Month Collection featuring their signature style of using multiple layers, fabrics, stitches, and combinations to achieve unique vintage links. Bottoms with emojis stickers and rustic patches look vintage yet fresh.

The brand has a culture of breaking the ongoing trends by offering something which is yet to be defined in the trend book. The collection has an array of clothing in different shades, style, and washes with Japanese quotient. From Jumpsuit to denim skirt for men, everything and anything in this collection are top-notch . Looking at the collection images is a visual treat for any denim lover.

About Kapital

Kapital as a company began in the 1980s. Brand founder, Toshikiyo Hirata, discovered his love for American denim while teaching Karate in the United States. Upon returning to his homeland of Japan, Toshikiyo had his heart set on producing his own denim. Toshikiyo opened his first factory in 1984, with his own denim and vintage store in Kojima following shortly after.

Continuing with their signature Japanese traditional wears including Kimono and flayered loose-fit pants with multi layered constructions, the brand put together a new range of unique styling. The Fall Winter ‘16 lookbook from Japanese brand Kapital boasts of vintage styles with a focus on the use of accessories to accentuate the looks. The lookbook is a huge collection of 357 images and highlights both men’s and women’s designs and features the label’s unique indigo, corduroy and denim garments and accessories.

Kapital, is first and foremost a denim company and forms the major part of the collection . The look book has motely collection of Oversized coats, oversized shirts, shearling, fur, corduroy, and quilted denims.

Packed with signature Kapital looks, layered textures and textiles and quirky personality that the brand is known for , the autumn assortment offered by designer Kiro Hirata has new takes on timeless classics like patchworks, classic coats, military , French workwear etc. The collection sees Thunderbird style jackets and other 70s pieces like the smiley sleeve trucker.
