The Upcycled by Miu Miu x Levi’s capsule theme features:

• Levi’s® iconic designs, including the MADE IN USA men’s 501® jeans and Trucker Jackets, are updated in true Miu Miu fashion personalized with hand-embellishments flowers, pink-colored gems, crystals, pearls, and art- deco leather patches.
• Men’s 501 jeans come full-length, or cut-off at the thigh.
• The trucker jacket boasts contrast detailing on the shoulders with reworked puff sleeves and frilly white lace collars.

As each piece is uniquely personalized, pricing varies from $980 up (an allover embellished look was noted as $5,800)

Sustainability is expensive! The whole idea behind recycling is to re-use existing resources and significantly reduce the burden on the supply chain and environment and we feel that this is the highest form of sustainability. But as with all other efforts, these products cannot remain like showpieces – works of art; which are more adored than worn. True recycling will emerge when it is able to create products that compete with existing product lines, will be in volumes, and beat them on the price front as well. Nevertheless, such efforts need to be appreciated as the first mile of a long journey!

In addition, the refashioned vintage collaboration will be available in limited quantities — 1,000 pieces distributed worldwide in the three original silhouettes. The collection has tapped Gen-Z icons like The Crown star Emma Corrin and models Lila Moss and Georgia Palmer to be the faces of the campaign.

“The Upcycled by Miu Miu x Levi’s collection will first be unveiled at London Selfridges & Shanghai IAPM. Then it will be available to shop on Miu Miu’s website and in 18 selected Miu Miu stores from May 24 to June 6.

Now the reputed Italian luxurious fashion house Valentino and American Denim super brand Levi’s comes under a single tag. The tag has been designed to celebrate the beginning of a new fashion exploration. The brand introduces up denim pants that re-conceptualized the retro Levi’s® 1969 – 517 boot cut, jean model, to create something completely new. And the result is a classic jean cut with a nod to the Italian flair that Valentino champions. Voluminous chiffon blouses and tailored jackets are styles which go with these Levi’s jeans .

The collection consists of two parts:

• The runway pieces, being vintage pants from the ’70s, designs have been limited worldwide to just 517 units. Every item bears a special label that shows its individual number.
• The Levi’s re-edition 517 jeans, a re-elaboration of the previously-worn variations

Made particularly for the Maison, it re-signifies an archival design it celebrates the concept of contemporary romanticism .

In a statement, the team behind the collaboration said both brands embody the same values of “equality” and an “inclusive aesthetic”. They continued: “’resignification’ is a concept that Piccioli has been reflecting on for a long time. It consists of giving new value to symbols, ideas, places, and atmospheres that come from different moments in time, but are still relevant to the contemporary world.”

Discussing the show in Milan, the team said “by remaining faithful to the 517 renowned styles, Piccioli has created a style that is familiar to all: Levi’s® boot cut jeans that are juxtaposed with iconic elements of Valentino such as rouches and lace. They co-exist harmoniously, creating a new concept of romanticism for men and women.”

A specialized co-branded again tag has additionally been designed for this collaboration. Every pair of denims will get a particular inside print of the logos and can then be packaged in a particular field to grow to be an especially private piece.

The Valentino and Levi’s 517 collaboration is now available exclusively on Net-A- Porter and Mr Porter sites.

Not only for men , even ladies can find their key piece this season in the 1950s lot. 701 jeans, which evolved from the first Levi’s® five-pocket jeans made just for women in 1934. The 1950s 701 jeans are made with signature selvedge stitching in pink (instead of the traditional red found on the 501) and includes the original Talon zipper manufactured since 1893. “I spent time on research trips traveling between the Mexican border and Malibu exploring the old surf haunts and meeting current surfers to trace the link from the surf riders of the 1940s to today, and found the same passions still exist,” says Paul O’Neill, Design Director, Levi’s® Vintage Clothing. “This was an era before the classic California surfers we all associate with board shorts and long blond hair … this is where I cast the surfers who would act as models for our lookbook as well.”

Levi Strauss & Co.partnered this year to create the first pair of jeans made entirely from post-consumer cotton waste. Discarded consumer waste is converted into renewable fiber after using a new ,patent-pending recycling technology . The first prototype, in the form of a pair of iconic Levi’s® 511® jeans, represents a future where textile waste is reduced considerably and cotton garments are continually regenerated to create a more sustainable world.

Believing the figures, United States alone creates an average of 13.1 million tons of textile wastes and out of which 11 million tons ends up in landfills. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, the U.S. generates an average of 25 billion pounds of textiles per year, or 82 pounds per person. Eighty-five percent (21 billion pounds), or 70 pounds per person, ends up in landfills — accounting for 5 percent of all landfill space.Till now , there is no effective technology which could transform old apparels into new without telling upon the quality or strength. However with EVRNU technology, discarded cotton clothing can be turned into a new cotton-like fiber, creating new possibilities. This emerging technology doesn’t only act as a game changer for the Textile Industry but also help the industry to meet the increasing need for textiles and reduce both waste and water consumption.

Approximately five discarded cotton T-shirts have been used to develop the first prototype Levi’s jean and surprisingly 98 percent less water has been used than virgin cotton products while developing this innovation. Both companies are associated with a vision to create a circular economy that enhances the life of cotton and eliminates waste by infusing new life into used clothing. The partnership could help this technology scale up quickly and begin to make a significant impact.

Evrnu takes cotton garment waste, purifies it and breaks it down into a pulp. The organization then extrudes this pulp into a pristine new fiber that is finer than silk and stronger than cotton — made entirely of garment waste. Each tone of fabric (Jeans and T-shirts) consumes approximately 200 tons of water , however only two percent of water will used in the original garment process.

“We can take your old jeans, break them down to the molecular level, and build them back up into beautiful sweaters that feel good and hold color beautifully and When you are done with that sweater and it’s been reused and recycled, we can break it down again and convert it back into premium jeans.” quoted the officials of company.

By the end of 2025 , the experts predicted the volume of apparel industry to be doubled and the current rate of resource extraction can’t meet this demand. Considering it , there is an enormous opportunity for emerging technology that efficiently as well as effectively manages resources. The film explores the lasting impact the Original 501® jean has had on cultural history.The story began in 1873 with the original button fly jeans and after more than a century it has been continuing with the same pace and innovations.From humble beginnings of being granted the patent to place rivets on trousers to a universal staple providing youth with their virgin denim experience, the name Levi’s has long been synonymous with blue jeans.

Levi’s has decided to pay tribute to its denim masterpiece with a three-part documentary series, titled The 501 Jean: Stories of an Original.

The three parts are titled “Work,” “Style,” and “Rebellion,” and explore the 501’s influence on various aspects of popular culture since its creation in 1873 (which made it the very first blue jean, might we add). It’s a fitting tribute to such an influential piece of clothing.

WORK :

In 1915 Levi partnered with Cone denim- Fabric Mill in USA and since 1927, LEVI and CONE denim put red thread on the edges in their selvedge jeans which signifies Levis quality which is now known as red line selvedge . In the video it has been featured that Mike Harris and Russ Miller went to west in search of Denim mines and after travelling miles they traced the 501® Jean’s roots as a utilitarian garment for coal miners, cowboys, industrial workers, all the way to the creative workers who continue to wear it today. They also managed to find the denim mines where they got some worn out jeans which were happened to be of between 1893 and 1896. From Miners to farmers, now the denim serves for all sorts of workers.

STYLE :
For the first time Levi’s are worn for their look, rather than function. Hollywood stars adopted it for decades and the 501 Jean becomes a style icon: continuing to inspire contemporary designers and style leaders. The western films made the cowboy look very popular which was later well adapted by common man also.In 1934 , Levi lady jean was showcased for the first time in the Vogue Fashion Magazine and later on became as the catalyst in the glamour quotient once it has been wore by movie actresses and eventually became the fashion icon.

REBELLION :
In some schools , Jeans were banned because of the outright which came due to wearing a jeans which is itself a surprising fact and gradually The 501 Jean became a symbol for countercultures as broad as biker clubs, punk, rap, skateboarding, and art movements. It can be seen on crowds through decades of activism: from beats to hippies, LGBTQ rights protests, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Google  announced it is working on a new technology dubbed ‘Project Jacquard ‘  with US jean maker Levi Strauss to make clothing from specially woven fabric with touch-screen control capabilities. The new technology was revealed at its annual developers conference in San Francisco and mentioned Levi Strauss as its first partner.

Project Jacquard is named after the Jacquard looms which bring out the most intricate weaves in the textile industry.  Project Jacquard is in the hands of a small Google team called Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP), which is different from the Google (x) lab that develops big-vision innovations such as self-driving cars.

“We are enabling interactive textiles,” Emre Karagozler of Google ATAP told viewers at the conference display.

The special threads can be woven into different types of fabrics, and be made to visually stand out or go unnoticed depending on how the designer’s want their fabrics to look like. Also the whole garment or a part of it could be made conductive.  See the video from the Project Jacquard below.

“It is stretchable; it is washable. We do it by weaving conductive threads into fabric.”,” Mr Karagozler said, as people in the hall  controlled lights or computer screens with finger strokes on a blue cloth covering a table in the display area behind him. As Project Jacquard team points out, very fine conductive threads have been made and woven in the fabric. This opens limitless possibilities of making the fabrics interactive and controlling various computing devices through simple gestures.

Conductive yarn is connected to tiny circuits, no bigger than jacket buttons, with miniaturized electronics that can use algorithms to recognize touches or swipes, ATAP said.

Project Jacquard makes it possible to weave touch and gesture interactivity into any textile using standard, industrial looms, according to Google.Anything involving fabric, from suits or dresses to furniture or carpet, could potentially have computer touch-pad style control capabilities woven.The data can be sent wirelessly to smartphones or other devices, enabling actions such as making phone calls or sending messages with brushes of fabric.

“In our hyper-digital world, people constantly struggle to be physically present in their environment while maintaining a digital connection,” Levi Strauss’ head of global product innovation Paul Dillinger said. “The work that Google and Levi’s are embarking upon with Project Jacquard delivers an entirely new value to consumers with apparel that is emotional, aspirational and functional.” He said.

The new technology has wide implications if it is successfully integrated into textile and apparel industry. Think about being able to control your television, make mobile calls  , fridge and even your car by rubbing your jeans pocket !  It could have widespread ramifications on the design, structure and wash techniques applied on denim and other textile products. And it is so seamless that even the most tech non-savvy person could use it .

It would be interesting to see the progress of this technology and how it changes our industry. Can Google do to textile industry what it did to technology?? Time will tell !
