The graph provides an insightful analysis of the fiber composition of women’s jeans across five prominent brands: Everlane, Madewell, Nudie Jeans, Mud Jeans, and Naked & Famous. The fibers included range from traditional materials like cotton and organic cotton to more innovative or sustainable fibers like regenerative cotton, recycled polyester, and hemp. A key takeaway is the emphasis on sustainable fibers by some brands, such as Nudie Jeans and Mud Jeans, which use high percentages of organic cotton (96% and 65.7%, respectively).

They work only with suppliers that share their values. Together with Fair Wear Foundation they ensure safe and ethical working conditions across the whole line of production. It’s their way to get as close to” just the right amount” as possible.

We wanted to evaluate NUDIE JEANS as a sustainable fashion denim brand from various perspectives and using different parameters and evaluated their online offerings. We decided
to do this individually for their MEN’s JEANS and WOMEN JEANS over a period of 1 year. We
selected August 2022 , Feb 2023 and August 2023 as the months which we would evaluate
and compare to find a inherent direction of the brand

1.Pricing: Pricing of NUDIE JEANS Men and women Jeans currently at the online retail level.
What kind of price bands does it fall into.. Also we tried to find whether such a focused brand also discounts products and sells .The results were interesting to say the least

2.Within these 3 months, we decided to check the FITS, MATERIALS/CONSTRUCTIONS, DEFINITIONS etc.

3.We also wanted to understand how the composition of cotton has panned out during these 3
different months. We analyze the top few compositions (of course considering that they use
only Organic Cotton) which were most used during this time by NUDIE. We also wanted to see
if the brand was strategizing on its fiber inputs and does it reflect in its recent assortment of
product offerings. We shall bring out a table with all the most popular compositions along with
a complete table of all compositions for our readers to analyze themselves

4.We studied over 100 product styles in these months to arrive at the following charts and
graphs to give a deeper insights into the brands consumer facing front

GRAPHS INCLUDED:
a) Total approx no of jeans styles in each of these months sold online

b) The average pricing of all these jeans

c) Average discounting in each of these months and average pricing after discounts.

d) Approx FIT breakup of styles during each of these months. This will reflect if Nudie has changed its Fits in a big way during this period or not.

e) Most popular compositions during these months. We will list out the major compositions used (and in how many styles ) during each month to give an idea of kind of fibers being used for the fabrics

f) Cotton % on an average from the whole stable of styles on offer. Is the overall cotton %
used in the products going up or down? We will try to analyse that

MEN JEANS STYLES

As we can see from below figures, the men jeans stable of NUDIE JEANS online had approximately 34 men jeans styles in August 2022, about 53 styles in Feb 2023 and about 36 styles in Aug 2023. The number has increased over the last 1 year as we can see in the following graph.

Fashion industry has woken up to the possibilities in re-working and recycling old garment pieces to disparage their ecological influence.

Nudie Jeans, the prominent Swedish denim brand, has centered on this idea of reworked sustainable fashion and has put forth their latest hand-mended collection. This uniquely curated collection is handmade by Nudie Jean’s co-founder and creative visionary Maria Erixon Levin, at her house on the island Gullholmen, in the western archipelagos of Sweden.

This limited-edition capsule assortment was launched on October 4th and will only be available at Browns’ Shoreditch shop, Browns East.

“Things you thought lost forever, there’s something beautiful in mending them, improving them, making the imperfections part of something new,” remarks Maria Erixon Levin, Co-founder of Nudie Jeans.

MARIA’S PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE RESTORED DENIM

Nudie Jeans has always had a profound effect on the fashion industry due to Erixon Levin’s philosophies on denim, sustainability, and ethical approaches. Remarkably, these items have helped the world understand that worn and tattered shouldn’t be squandered or discarded, but instead the contrary. The one that is brilliantly exhibited in the sixteen one-of-a-kind and manually restored pieces.

“You want to make the repair visible – that’s the purpose. That’s the beauty of it. You don’t conceal that.” said Maria.

Old garments are salvaged with gorgeous indigo patches of vintage Japanese fabric that transform defects into fresh and visually appealing cloth items. They are worn, but their sheer aesthetics allows them to be put on the wall like a true piece of art. Between the twill lines, history and spirit infuse.

The majority of the restored jeans are selvedge denim. According to Nudie Jeans, it is the pinnacle of denim designing and the utmost craftsmanship. The collection will include 15 pairs of jeans and one jacket design that have been revamped specifically for Browns and will be an ideal complement to the Browns ‘Conscious’ catalogue.

THE BRAND’S OUTLOOK ON SUSTAINABILITY

Nudie Jeans has been the most preferred brand for authentic and responsibly made denim for over 20 years. The Swedish brand uses certified organic cotton in all of their clothing and offers free lifetime repairs on all of their jeans, so when this entire idea came to finalization, Maria felt she wanted to make it wholly remarkable.

Repairing jeans minimizes waste, saves energy, and brings down the utilization of virgin raw materials. The brand aims of closing supply chain loops to offer free repairs. With its Reuse program, the brand gathers preloved Nudie Jeans denim, washes, restores, and resells it as unique secondhand merchandise. Nudie Jeans had already restored over 45,900 pairs of jeans by 2020, saving about 321 324 tonnes of water. It always utilizes certified organic cotton and Fairtrade organic cotton for about 95% of its total fibers.

In addition, it intends to extend its fiber range with new sustainable materials and pre / post-recycled fibers. For a long time, the denim label has been directing its designers and product developers to operate with 100% recycled resources. A garment or accessory is considered sustainable if it comprises at least 70% sustainable fibers as specified in the retailer’s material tool. It requests supporting certificates from its suppliers to ensure the sustainability of the fibers and clothes.

Ultimately, the Re-worked collection seeks to illustrate Maria’s constructive creativity, passion for denim, her vision for responsible consumption, and how these all shape our ideologies about what wear and tear mean.

We are amazed by the level of transparency which Nudie Jeans has displayed on their website for various products of theirs.  Without any inhibitions, they have disclosed the sources of the materials and factories used to manufacture their products. Starting from the places where the cotton is ginned , yarn produced , trims made and fabric manufactured the company goes all the way in describing the companies where the jeans were made and how they were transported from those locations. Even more surprising is the statement showing whether NUDIE JEANS team has visited these locations or not and also a figure on the employees of these companies. The level of disclosure seems really the most detailed one that we have seen till yet ! 

We take an example of their newest addition – The Steady Eddie Jean – which is constructed with a tapered leg made in organic denim.  In the table below, we see the most transparent information on the manufacturing of the jeans below :

As we can see in the tables above, the disclosure on all the supply chain is given in minute details. Nudie Jeans also mentions that they use a Truck for the route with which the garment is transported. And their warehouse location in Borås, Sweden.

This kind of disclosure sets a great example for the industry to follow and also opens new avenues for further improving upon this transparency. For example, NUDIE might take this to another level by adding the sustainability disclosures related to an individual product – giving enough information for the consumers to make an informed decision on the kind of product they are buying.

And not missing to spell out more information on the STEADY EDDIE Jeans. They have been washed down to a muted bright blue hue with warm highlights. Its subtle abrasions and wear marks give the jeans a lively depth. The wash has rendered beautiful wash effects at seams and a marbling structure in the darkest areas,  they are constructed with Nudie’s signature orange stitching throughout. The deep indigo is starting to come out, giving this wash beautiful contrasts. The coating is still evident in the twill lines, between seams and as depots at the back of the knees and at the crotch.
