When one speaks of denim fashion in EU , the first nation that comes to mind is Italy as it has been the harbinger of denim developments with a number of important mills like TRC  and denim brands like Diesel having originated from here.However, in recent times, the industry has been in trouble as the production units have been going down. ITV – an important denim mill from Italy recently closed down . But there is still hope for the jeans industry as we will see in the report below where we will find the exports from Italy to various other countries in EU28.

Italy Exports Of Jeans ( Men+Women) To Rest Of EU During Q1 –Q3 2017

Out of three quarters , Q2 was little disappointing for Italy . For both Men & Women Jeans , the export volume was down 18% and 31% respectively. The export figures of Q3 were very encouraging as in both segments , there was substantial growth.The Men’s Jeans’ export registered a growth of 27% while the Women’s Jeans grown by whopping 53%. During first nine months of 2017 , the total Men’s Jeans Export from Italy to rest of the EU was 7.8 million pcs while the total Women’s Jeans stood at 5.3 million pcs. If the trend of nine months follows in the same way , the country would have estimated export of 10.4 million pcs of Men’s Jeans and 7.18 million pcs of Women’s jeans by the end of this year taking the total exports to about 18 million pieces in 2017.

While analyzing the monthly trend of exports of both Men’s and Women’s Jeans , we noticed that the month of July registered the highest volume in both segments with 1.04 Millions pcs and 0.85 Million pcs respectively. The month of April went disappointing for both segments due to the lowest export . During April , 0.573 Million Pcs of  Men’s Jeans exported while 0.373 Million Pcs of Women’s Jeans exported during the same period. Coming on Average price , Men’s Jeans exported at the least average of Euro 24.86/Pc in the month of April however, In the month of September, Women’s Jeans were exported at the least average price of Euro 26.32/Pc. The highest average price for Men’s Jeans during the first nine months of 2017 reached to the level of Euro 39.91/Pc however for Women’s Jeans, it reached to Euro 33.97/Pc.

From the year 2014 to the year 2016 , the journey was little up and down for Italy and failed to maintain the consistency. In 2014 , the total export of Men’s Jeans by Italy to rest of EU was 10.07 million pcs at an average price of Euro 29.79/Pc . The total export of Women’ Jeans for the same period was 8.35 million pcs at an average price of Euro 28.44/Pc . Year 2015 took a dip and the exports of Men’s Jeans decline to 9.58 million pcs and Women’s Jeans export dropped to 7.18 million pcs. Year 2016 brought some improvement in the export figure of Men’s Jeans export however the Women’s Jeans dropped to the level of 6.99 million pcs which were exported at the highest average price of Euro 31/Pc . However, if we see as total, we will find that the number of jeans exported to European countries is between 16-18 million pieces each year. The year 2017 projection shows that the export of jeans might be 5-6% higher than 2016 which is good news for Italy.

On the whole, we find that Italy is doing great considering that it is the only important country in Europe still manufacturing jeans in large quantities. The volumes have not gone down inspite of economic troubles and troubles in the denim industry as well. The pricing of jeans is still at good levels compared to imports and women jeans prices seem to be rising over the last 3 years and are currently more than men jeans as an average.
