Calvin Klein Launches ‘Heron Preston for Calvin Klein’ Collection

“No more, no less than what we truly need”. Essentials in fashion are sort of fantasy: that of a piece of clothing that will stand the test of time and remain relevant outside the dimension of seasonal trends. Calvin Klein- New York fashion house announced the appointment of Heron Preston as the brand’s new creative consultant. The designer, streetwear pioneer, former DSNY artist, current proprietor of a global retail pop-up store, DJ, and creative director who made a name for himself has added yet another big name to his list of collaborations. Preston defines his brand’s identity with 3R’s- Revolutionary, Relatable, and Relevant.

Calvin Klein is widely known for its minimalistic aesthetic and timeline essentials, now has a modern spirit that Preston has brought to the brand. The brand has always focused on widening expectations for essentials- denim, underwear, hoodies, and basic tees.  Preston has organized a collection of unisex basics resulting in “ essential but not generic” and are season immune which makes this collaboration worth every penny.

Coming up with an essentials line has always struck me as a deceptively difficult task — how do you stand out from the fierce competition, putting a personal twist on pieces that should be nondescript by their very nature? It’s a careful balancing act; design at a foundational level. “I didn’t want to touch the product too much, I just wanted to elevate it,” says Preston, using an example of how he adapts workwear to the Parisian runway for his eponymous label.

    Calvin Klein Heron Preston

“We discovered this idea of underwear as outerwear,” Preston said, pointing to a bralette on top of a tank top. “There was also this idea of playfulness,” he said.

“The whole ‘underwear as outerwear’ idea came out of styling exercises; playful moments in the studio. We started discovering these themes naturally through layering experiments: bras on top of different pieces, etc. When we stumbled upon it, there were high-fives all around, then it became a real concept we designed into storytelling.” You might call it a happy accident, but isn’t that the entire point of collaboration? Jacob Jordan, Global Chief Merchant, Head of Product Strategy & New Product Ventures at Calvin Klein thinks so. “Heron’s lens, that’s his filter — looking at something really iconic to the brand. [It’s about] two people looking at something they couldn’t necessarily have done on their own. We’ve been making underwear for a long time; sometimes you get so close to it that you have a very specific approach. To have Heron come in and respect that while showcasing a very different way of working is super exciting.”

Heron Preston & Calvin Klein Collaboration

When Preston was assigned this project, he made sure to respect Calvin Klein as much as possible by going deep into the history of the brand. “I wanted to create a collection for real people. I saw this collection speaking to not only my specific friend group but the rest of the globe,” said Preston. He focused on few points before coming out with the collection:

    • Understanding about brand’s most iconic pieces like underwear and T-shirts
    • Understand the colors of the brand, Preston said “Understanding colors like chalk that I became obsessed with,”
    • Understand the consumer and what they’re wearing from day to nighttime.
    • Making clothing line comfortable and sustainable
    • Tight-fitting, Klein said “Jeans are sex, The tighter they are, the better they sell.”,
    • Season immune
    • Gender Neutral
    • Sustainably sourced

For Denim collection the results are:

    • Carpenter jeans
    • High-waist & regular fitting jeans
    • Natural canvas denim top

And Preston’s favorite is Carpenter jeans as it speaks to him as a designer who’s inspired by workwear. “I was really interested in a great fitting denim that everyone could fall in love with,” Preston explains. “Aside from the fit that we spent countless hours on, I wanted to include little design details that aren’t necessarily traditional, like the label on the opposite side, turned inside out. “People always associate Calvin Klein with being minimal, and I think you [Preston] embraced that and you built so much detail within each of the pieces. Denim is a place where that definitely shows up,” said Jordan.

Preston wants to design a collection where pieces detail will be noticed. He said ”I wanted to make a distinction between wearing clothes and then living in them. This is a collection that I really wanted people to live in.”

Heron Preston & Calvin Klein Collaboration

The collection plays off a composed cool New York aesthetic featuring Heron’s vibrant and signature orange color-splashed signature, Preston commented that “Orange is my color”.

There is a special interior and exterior branding element to this collection. Pieces are finished with raised ribbing and stitching giving a 3D appearance, adding a modern twist to the legendary Calvin Klein pieces, he revolutionizes the brand:

    • Simple silhouettes and made from heavier, more substantial fabrics
    • T-shirts come in lightweight organic cotton for the basic pack and heavy 8-ounce cotton for a single shirt with an orange box stitch on the back.
    • Long-sleeved T-shirt with a gender-neutral fit
    • Boxer briefs have a thin orange line around the waistline
    • Socks also have an orange trim

This collection also embodies a commitment for sustainability from both Preston and Calvin Klein by using organic & recycled cotton and plastic-free packaging; raw denim to save water.

Heron Preston & Calvin Klein Collaboration

Preston says, “This goes beyond just a normal collaboration. I call it a collaboration 2.0., as the work we did, and how we did it, goes beyond just product design and placement. We tried to reshape and develop a new business language, while still fully embracing and respecting Calvin Klein’s culture, experience, and history.”

“Working with Heron was such a perfect place to start. He sits at the crossroads of culture, interconnecting various disciplines – threading ways between youth and creativity. His modern way of thinking and his approach to design and sustainability are very much aligned to the Calvin Klein brand. Heron brought a level of integrity to this collaboration, one that goes beyond the hype and actually wants to change from the inside out and influence the product,” says Jordan.

1.TOTAL JEANS IMPORTED FROM TURKEY DURING 2010-2020

As we can see from the table below, Turkey has increased its share of EU imports significantly over the last 10 years. From 12% share in 2010, it increased to 16% in 2020. In 2018 it shows a fall of 2% since 2017 but then a massive increase till 2020. The highest imports were in 2019 of around 82 million pieces with an avg. price of Euro 12.11. As we can see the prices of Turkey are about 50% higher than that of Pakistan’s and over 100% over Bangladesh’s average export price of jeans.

    2.MEN’S JEANS IMPORTED TO EU

Turkey imported around 360 million pieces in the last 10 years. In 2016 Turkey exported the highest number of men’s jeans with a total volume of about 37 million pieces at an average price of EURO 14.41. And due to the pandemic 2020 exported much fewer jeans compared to 2019. The share of Men’s jeans is about 40% of total jeans exported and and women’s jeans take the lion’s share. And this is also because Turkey works mainly with fast fashion orders – max of which are related to women’s market.

As we can see from the price graph above , we find that the average prices of Men’s jeans have remained more or less similar around Euro 13 whereas women’s jeans have fluctuated from around Euro 12 in 2010 to Euro 14 in 2013 and finally settling around Euro 11 in 2019 and 2020. The pressure on women’s jeans is also due to the fact that countries like Pakistan are upgrading themselves and coming to the level of Turkey and that too with much lower prices. Hence the price gap between the women’s jeans in Turkey and Pakistan seems to be narrowing down.

Another point to be noted is that Pakistan and Bangladesh both lost about 30% of sales in 2020 compared to 2019 whereas Turkey lost less than 20% . This shows the relative importance of Turkey for the EU market where the combination of skill, speed and proximity keeps on giving it a special place.

The table shows, Pakistan has increased its share of EU imports significantly over the last 10 years. From an 11% share in 2010, it has approximately doubled to 20% in 2020 and becoming one of the largest supplier of jeans to Europe. It is also important to see that Pakistan increased its share in 2020 also when the absolute imports have fallen by over 25% . This means Pakistan did relatively better than other countries during this year.

Pakistan still specializes in Men’s Jeans over women’s. Men’s jeans still forms over 60% of its exports to EU. In 2019 Pakistan exported the highest number of men’s jeans with a total volume of about 71 million pieces at an average price of EURO 7.22. Compared to 2018, 2019 exported fewer jeans, and due to pandemic in 2020, it fell drastically around 25% compared to 2019. Also on the price front, we can see that Pakistan gets a much better price than its main competitor- Bangladesh, signifying that it is able to get orders for better quality products.

The following graph shows that the price peaked in 2015 and after that, it more or less hovered between Euro 7.00-7.60 We might likely see a rise in price in 2021.

    3. WOMEN’S JEANS IMPORTED TO EU

In 2019 Pakistan imported the highest number of women’s jeans with a total volume of about 40.7 million pieces at an average price of EURO 6.54. Due to the pandemic in 2020, imports of jeans fell drastically around 25% since 2019. It is quite likely that the imports will pick up very strongly in 2021 and we might even see the figures exceeding that of 2019. Still women jeans forms about 40% of the total exports of its jeans to EU .

We can see that strangely that even the women’s jeans price peaked in 2015 and have seen a decline since.

From all the figures above, we can say that Pakistan is now one of the most important exporters of jeans to EU and has been continuously increasing its exports to EU. Its strength and resilience has been visible during 2020 , when it increased its share of exports as compared to other countries . For Europe , Pakistan is now one of the most important sourcing destinations.

    Amazing Transparency By Nudie Jeans

Nudie Jeans distinguishes itself in the crowded premium denim space by offering consistent quality and added value in each collection. Its clothing is made of 100% organic cotton denim and the company prides itself on social responsibility and transparent production. Founded in 2001 in Gothenburg, Sweden, the brand follows an ethos of conscious consumerism and sustainable consumption, recycling worn-out products, re-selling secondhand pieces, and opening repair shops – with free service for well-used Nudie jeans – in various cities around the world. Its range of products is extensive, consisting of tops, bottoms, jackets, and accessories for their men’s, women’s, and kids’ lines.

    Nudity

We are amazed by the level of transparency which Nudie Jeans has displayed on their website for various products of theirs.  Without any inhibitions, they have disclosed the sources of the materials and factories used to manufacture their products. Starting from the places where the cotton is ginned , yarn produced , trims made and fabric manufactured the company goes all the way in describing the companies where the jeans were made and how they were transported from those locations. Even more surprising is the statement showing whether NUDIE JEANS team has visited these locations or not and also a figure on the employees of these companies. The level of disclosure seems really the most detailed one that we have seen till yet !

We take an example of their newest addition – The Steady Eddie Jean – which is constructed with a tapered leg made in organic denim.  In the table below, we see the most transparent information on the manufacturing of the jeans below :

As we can see in the tables above, the disclosure on all the supply chain is given in minute details. Nudie Jeans also mentions that they use a Truck for the route with which the garment is transported. And their warehouse location in Borås, Sweden.

This kind of disclosure sets a great example for the industry to follow and also opens new avenues for further improving upon this transparency. For example, NUDIE might take this to another level by adding the sustainability disclosures related to an individual product – giving enough information for the consumers to make an informed decision on the kind of product they are buying.

And not missing to spell out more information on the STEADY EDDIE Jeans. They have been washed down to a muted bright blue hue with warm highlights. Its subtle abrasions and wear marks give the jeans a lively depth. As we can see from the table below, Indonesia has decreased its share of EU imports significantly over the last 10 years. From 0.57% share in 2010, it gradually decreased to 0.06% in 2020 . This is also logical as Indonesia’s cost of production has been rising continuously and it has not duty advantage to Europe. Highest imports were in 2010 of 2.89 million pieces with an avg. price of Euro 6.51. As we can see while imports gradually started decreasing down for two years it again showed some gain in 2013 and 2014. But then it dropped down continuously till the %share reached from 0.37% to 0.06%.

During Dec 2020- Jan 2021, Colombia has imported approx. 10 million sqm of denim fabrics or an average of 5 million sq mtrs each month.

Also, we need to understand that the prices are sometimes not correct representations as in Mexico there are many suppliers under-reporting the actual price for custom benefits )

1.TOTAL JEANS IMPORTED FROM CHINA DURING 2010-2020

As we can see from the table below, China has decreased its share of EU imports significantly over the last 10 years. From a 42% share in 2010, it gradually decreased to 8% in 2020 . This is also logical as China’s cost of production has been rising continuously and it has not been able to keep pace with the costs of Bangladesh , Pakistan and other countries. Though , if we compare with our report on Bangladesh , we find that the price difference is hardly there with Bangladesh being almost as expensive in prices as China. However, the biggest difference comes due to GSP – which gives BD a straight advantage of about 12% and that is huge !

In 2010 China exported the highest number of men’s jeans with a total volume of about 97.42 million pieces at an average price of EURO 5.99. Export of men’s jeans constantly decreased from 42% to 13 % during 2010-2017. It showed a little rise in 2018 (14%) but due to pandemic in 2020, it fell drastically around 50% since 2019.

    3. In the following graph, it’s visible that the price was low in 2018 because of which we saw a little rise in imports of men’s jeans. and it peaked in 2020.

    2. WOMEN’S JEANS IMPORTED TO EU

In 2010 China imported the highest number of women’s jeans with a total volume of about 114.37 million pieces at an average price of EURO 4.63. Compared to 2018, 2019 imported fewer jeans, and due to pandemic in 2020, it fell drastically around 50% since 2019 – almost the same fall that Men’s jeans also experienced.

As we can see from all the tables and charts above, China is no longer a force in jeans exports to EU and has been constantly losing steam. It has been very strong in women’s jeans – due to its efficiency and speed – but its now losing out due , not only because of costing, but various global dynamics which make it difficult for China to remain as a strong candidate in this export industry.

  • Prada Unveils Organic Denim Collection

    Prada Unveils Organic Denim Collection

Denim does have a huge environmental impact since it  consumes such a large amount of resources and its carbon footprint is really huge. Many brands and retailers are trying to be leaders in the arena of bringing out sustainable collections  . There are various aspects of sustainable inputs of a fabric including the fibers used , chemicals, energy, water and more. The problem that we see with most sustainable collections from different brands is that they focus on one of these aspects and not others. A unified approach is missing  which takes into consideration all the elements. However, inspite of these shortcoming s, such sustainable launches are a welcome step as they help in increasing awareness about our environment.

Prada is championing its practices with the launch of a Denim collection made from 100% GOTS certified cotton (Global Organic Textile Standard)made with less water and less energy to ensure that each piece is made without sacrificing quality.

“To maintain a high level of sustainability, the denim is dyed using the ‘Acquasave’ system, a type of dyeing where the water consumption is well below the standard, thus, allowing a saving of 10 liters of water for each linear meter of fabric,” Prada said in a statement.

The brand also explained that its organic cotton comes from farms with low environmental impacts and is free from pesticides and fertilizers. Thus Prada is trying to address two aspects of sustainability in their collection – FIBER and WATER. As claimed by the brand, they save, on average, 10 liters of water for each meter of fabric. These traits help improve the brand’s EIM (environmental impact measurement) — a metric  (from Jeanologia) that has become increasingly important for brands. Using ethically sourced denim, the brand is continuing an ongoing commitment to sustainability.

The collection includes denim shorts, dresses, jackets, jeans, and even a cute bra bralette. All of the organic denim pieces have been lightly distressed and faded, and embellished with the black enamel Prada logo that has become an increasingly prominent part of the brand’s visual identity since Raf Simons joined Miuccia Prada at the design helm.

  • Miu Miu and Levi’s Release Limited Edition Upcycled Denim

Miu Miu and Levi’s Release Limited Edition Upcycled Denim

Building off an industry-wide push for sustainability, the Italian fashion brand Miu Miu has now teamed up with Levi’s to showcase the collection of reworked and upcycled denim. Each of the pieces in Levi’s partnership is upcycled from Levi’s ’80s and ’90s archives and then retouched with dead stock from the Miu Miu atelier.

    Miu Miu Levis Collab

The Upcycled by Miu Miu x Levi’s capsule theme features:

    • Levi’s® iconic designs, including the MADE IN USA men’s 501® jeans and Trucker Jackets, are updated in true Miu Miu fashion personalized with hand-embellishments flowers, pink-colored gems, crystals, pearls, and art- deco leather patches.
    • Men’s 501 jeans come full-length, or cut-off at the thigh.
    • The trucker jacket boasts contrast detailing on the shoulders with reworked puff sleeves and frilly white lace collars.
    • Denim pants are decorated with leather and silk pieces.
    • The final touch of this capsule is a Miu Miu carrier bag featured with the Levi’s logo

“No two pieces in the collection are the same. Reimagined through the Miu Miu lens, the lives of garments worn and loved in the past are extended, refreshed—renewed,” the fashion house shared in a statement. As each piece is uniquely personalized, pricing varies from $980 up (an allover embellished look was noted as $5,800)

Sustainability is expensive! The whole idea behind recycling is to re-use existing resources and significantly reduce the burden on the supply chain and environment and we feel that this is the highest form of sustainability. But as with all other efforts, these products cannot remain like showpieces – works of art; which are more adored than worn. True recycling will emerge when it is able to create products that compete with existing product lines, will be in volumes, and beat them on the price front as well. Nevertheless, such efforts need to be appreciated as the first mile of a long journey!

In addition, the refashioned vintage collaboration will be available in limited quantities — 1,000 pieces distributed worldwide in the three original silhouettes. The collection has tapped Gen-Z icons like The Crown star Emma Corrin and models Lila Moss and Georgia Palmer to be the faces of the campaign.

  • Eco Scored Denim Fabrics @ DE Brands

Eco Scored Denim Fabrics @ DE Brands

Sustainabiilty has always been an amiguous word. There are no standard definitions for the same and though many brands and companies have been genuinely working towards making their products sustainable , the scourge of greenwashing continues to plague the industry. The answer to greenwashing is always TRANSPARENCY and STANDARDISATION . If all the elements of production inputs are somehow transparently shown in a standardized way, the chances of greenwashing somehow reduce to certain extent. However, this is easier said than done.

At Denimsandjeans , we have made a small effort towards standardization of inputs of DENIM FABRICS and relatively weighing them in terms of their sustainability. No claims of being perfect but we are happy for making a small beginning. We have created a DENIM FABRIC SUSTAINABILITY CALCULATOR which enables the platform to calculate the ECO SCORES of different fabrics by referencing to the various inputs that go into the fabric. From materials, to chemicals, to energy to water and other inputs, the calculator tries to come out with a score for each fabric rather than for the whole mill or the company. The idea is that the byers should be able to select fabrics which are more sustainable and they can clearly see reasons for their sustainable scores and judge for themselves whether the fabric deserves a particular score or not. As we all know that TRANSPARENCY is the key to sustainability and with this calculator , we have tried to make a small effort.

The concept of ECO SCORE on DE Brands envisages that the mills who are showcasing their products here should be able to create an ECO SCORE for all their sustainable products . For the buyers it aims to provide a clear RANKING of different GREEN products on the basis of their scores . The various inputs have different Sustainability score and based on the mill’s mixture of inputs – materials , chemicals, energy, water etc, each fabric gets an ECO SCORE .

A number of denim mills on our platform have come out with their sustainable products and got them scored. These products clearly bring out the details of their scorings and also show supportings of such claims to the visiting buyers.

We are happy to share some ECO SCORED products from various mills who are showcasing their latest collections on the DE Brands platform. The full details of the ECO SCORES and the mills’ details on inputs -their savings of various resources and further available on our platform which can be accessed by registering at this page
Check out some of interesting ECO SCORED products from our mills.
