    Denim Buyback Program Of J.Crew

Following the initiative started by J.crew since 2014 with Blue Jeans Go Green to recycle the denim wih insulation technology , the brand has come with another buyback program in partnership with Habitat For Humanity. This retailer is expandning its denm recycling program in association with Habitat For Humanity to recycle the used jeans into materials for charity to ensure that all the unwanted denim is put into good use.According to the retailers, the average American home can be insulated with about 2,000 pairs of jeans.

    Denim Buyback Program–J.Crew | Denimsandjeans

As an incentive, J.crew is offering a $20 for a new pair of jeans for every pair brought in for recycling. As compared to the other such brands like Rag & Bone which only offer a minimal discount, it is a very generous contribution towards recycling. This partnership with Habitat For Humanity comes with the expansion of the environmentally friendly Eco jeans collection by J.Crew.To donate, the customers are needed to just turn in their gently worn denims to the J.Crew or Madwell sstores nearby.

“Our denim recycling program allows us to help our customers dispose of waste responsibly by giving their jeans a new life in the form of housing insulation and keeping them out of landfills,” said Gonzalo Pertile, director of corporate social responsibility at J.Crew.“This is one of the steps we’re taking as we embark in our sustainability journey. We believe that some challenges require strong partnerships to make the most meaningful impact.”

J.Crew is certainly following the trend for minimal amount of waste generations.A win – win situation for all , this program benefits everyone by donating the jeans for $20 and that too form any brand that will eventually leads in the prevention of throwing the used jeans as a waste. J.Crew’s effort for charity and upcycling denim for a good cause is certainly admirable.

Major Denim Fabric Importers Of Mexico | Aug’18-Oct’18

Denim has been an important part of the textile and apparel industry in Mexico. In fact, Mexico was the largest exporter of jeans to the US before China came in. Even now substantial jeans are exported to the US.  Mexico has also been a large producer of denim fabrics with a number of mills doing large productions. However, over a period of last few years, Mexico lost some of the mills and imports also increased. This ensures a decent quantity of denim is coming into Mexico from around the world. In this report, we’ve listed the top 10 denim fabric importers in Mexico for the period Sept and Oct. 2018 and analyzed the volume and average price along with the countries from where they are buying. On the whole Mexico is a large importer of denim fabrics with most quantities coming from China. However, as China is getting expensive, the country will be looked at as an export destination by other countries as well !

Resurgent India – India’s Growth Story By Mckinsey & BOF

India is currently the fastest growing large economy globally . The country has been changing structurally in the recent years and though, on the one hand , it has caused some disturbance, on the other there have been rectifications in the structure of the industry which has created very positive outlook for the country . A recent report by Mckinsey and Business of Fashion gives a big thumbs up to the growth story in India and this includes the fashion and apparel manufacturing industry. We bring some excerpts from this article on Business of Fashion.

      • Expected annual GDP growth from 2018 to 2022 – 8%
      • Middle class growth rate 19.4%
      • 300 international fashion brands are expected to open stores in India in the next two years
      • Organized retail is less than 35% of total retail. This will be about 45% in 2025
      • Ten years ago 5 million smarphones and 45 million on internet. Now 355 million and 460 million respectively. By 2021 more than 900 million will be online
      • E-commerce leaders moving to AI solutions.
      • Growth of textile and apparel exports is expected to accelerate
      • 41 percent of chief procurement officers expect to increase their sourcing share from India
      •  High availability of raw materials e.g., cotton, wool, silk, and jute will help in this increased sourcing
      • Traditional clothing is still very much the default choice for women, making up an estimated 70 percent of women’s apparel sales in 2017. Appetite for Western styles is likely to increase
      • Indian authorities are certainly keen to promote investment. Relaxed FDI regulations (e.g., allowing 100 percent foreign-owned single brand retail operations), will likely lead to more overseas-originated activity through the value chain.

Sanjay Kapoor, founder of Genesis Luxury, an Indian luxury retail conglomerate, higher incomes are likely to create a whole new class of consumer: “We are moving on towards the ‘gold collar’ worker. It’s a term that defines the well paid, highly paid professionals, who are happy to look good, happy to feel good and are expanding the consumption of today.”

The points mentioned in the Mckinsey/ BOF report are known already but its great to be authenticated by global knowledge experts. The Indian apparel market is growing and so it the denim market within it . Though we have seen some overcapacities recently, the industry is set to regain its agility in the near future. Textile and apparel is again becoming a focus area for Indian govt. with several states in India offering special investment opportunities which are attracting large corporates to set up apparel parks – something which was not visible in last decade and beyond . The increasing consumption locally for large retailers like H&M, Reliance, Future Group, Inditex and others requires organized productions which is attracting large investments in this long forgotten area.

So, while on one hand, we will see a market which is strongly growing – creating opportunities for local and international suppliers, on the other hand we are likely to see increased sourcing of apparel and textiles from India as the strengths build up. India is still much cheaper than China when it comes to costs and this gives it an advantage as a sourcing destination.

Check out complete report by BOF here

The theme of our next show in India corroborates what the report by Mckinsey states – that India is on ascent. We will celebrate this fact with our theme which will focus on the growing strengths of the Indian economy and Industry ! Do mark the dates and wait for updates.

So on the whole, we see that Mexico has imported about 13 million sq mtrs in 2 months which comes to an annual imports of about 80 million sq mtrs. China is ruling this market on base of low price. However, slowly the grip of China on the market will go down as the costs go up in China and supply comes from other countries as well. US used to be a large supplier but since only one mill is left in US now, the imports from US have come down.

Rising Indian Imports Of Denim Garments 2018 – Part I

India is expected to become the world’s fastest growing e-commerce market, driven by robust investment in the sector and a rapid increase in the number of internet users. Various agencies have high expectations about the growth of Indian e-commerce markets. Indian e-commerce sales are expected to reach US$ 100 billion by 2020 from US$ 30 billion in FY2016. Further, India’s e-commerce market is expected to reach US$ 220 billion in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV) and 530 million shoppers by 2025, led by faster speeds on reliable telecom networks, faster adoption of online services and better variety as well as convenience. The Government of India has taken various initiatives to improve the retail industry in India due to which many international brands have made their debut in the Indian market in the past few years.

Retailers including H&M, GAP, Inditex, Adidas, Puma, and Walmart have already shared their expansion plans in India which indicates the huge potential of the Indian apparel industry. The leading Japanese retailer – Uniqlo is opening its first showroom in India next year, H&M – one of the worlds biggest clothing retailers, is targetting to open 50 showrooms by the mid of 2019 and GAP is expecting to add 50 more showrooms in India. India stands 2nd globally when it comes to consumption of Jeans. The domestic market of India is big and so is the production. However, India is still importing a considerable amount of Denim Garment from overseas also and the post-GST (VAT introduction) retailers based in India and overseas have been keen to import from the neighboring countries who are enjoying duty privileges from India. There are a series of treaties which are expected to be signed in the coming years which might add to the increase in imports of garments.

In this report, we’ve listed top 10 denim garment importers in India for the period covering early Dec’17 to early Dec’18 and analyzed the volume and average price along with the countries from where they are buying. The exclusive insights of Indian Denim Buyers will help to understand the dynamics of Indian Denim Industry has been changing.

Katsu Manabe From Momotaro Jeans , Japan Speaks To Denimsandjeans

In the recent tour of Japanese companies , one of the most important one was  JAPAN BLUE COMPANY which was founded in 1992 at Kojima, Japan and holding some very famous brands from Japan. Momotaro, Japan Blue , So Life and some other brands from their stable are there out of which Momotaro is the most well known.  In 2006 Momotaro Jeans was launched by Mr. Katsu who is taking care of International Market of Momotaro Jeans since then and in 2008 he brought the Momotaro Jeans into the international market. The company is currently operating in 26-27 countries with over 300 stores.

The company has recently launched Denim Suitings, Customised Jeans and Handwoven Jeans also. Denim suitings are a new concept in the market where the indigo will not fade but will still give the sheen and look of indigo . Handwoven Jeans are made by the oldest technique of jeans manufacturing and has been also claimed that the jeans produced are 100% sustainable. The jeans are hand dyed with 100% use of natural indigo. The entire process took three months due to the traditional method of manufacturing and hence you can’t expect the jeans to be price competitive- they are really expensive ! (click on image below to see the video interview with Katsu Manabe)

“Being a Jeansmaker we always think to produce the jeans in the most ecological way and the objective of launching handwoven jeans was to teach and show our youth the Japanese Culture of manufacturing ” – Katsu Manabe

    Why named “MOMOTARO” “MOMOTARO”

”Peach Boy” is one of very famous fairytale in Japan, The “legend of MOMOTARO” has been passed  from generations. The legend’s origin is a “Ura” legend which was has been handed down in Soja-city, Okayama. And many places with mysterious history and culture, remain in Okayama. A story of rejuvenation? Today, many people know “MOMOTARO” was born from a peach that came floating down a stream, rolling over and over. However, the popular legend of MO Meiji period was actually a story of rejuvenation. In this version, MOMOTARO was not born from a peach but was born to an old couple who ate the floating pe youth. Story of pursuing the dreams .The rejuvenation version of the “legend of MOMOTARO” was a folk tale for adults and was born as a story representing dreams and vitality to expand from a vast ocean. KOJIMA JEANS STREET

Kojima is an Industrial area surrounded by many factories, this place happens to be meant for only Industries and the workers however if you see it now, one will be blown away the way it has been transformed. Now Kojima has a dedicated Kojima Jeans Street which is designed in such a way that it looks like you are touring any Jeans Festival. Even the whole city of Kojima is branded as a ‘denim city’ where the branding starts at the railway station.  But it wasn’t that easy, Mr. Katsu while explaining the history of Kojima Jeans street said, that his father actually took the initiative to design the entire street. Initially, it was only Japan Blue Jeans and Momotaro Jeans all around the street, later on, Mr. Katsu’s father talked to all the factories around and convinced them to be a part of this street. Mr. Katsu said that convincing them wasn’t easy as most of them were very reluctant to change and not very young. However as some factories joined, and visitors started to visit the street, the rest factories also joined the initiative.

Some very interesting images from the ‘Denim Street of Kojima’.

A Talk With Gaku Tsyuoshi , FDMTL Japan

Denimsandjeans Visits FDMTL Japan | Denimsandjeans

Founded by Gaku Tsuyoshi, FDMTL is one of the most famous denim labels from Japan and has been known for its peculiar designing and patchworks since 2005.

Gaku Tsuyoshi, an architect by profession and a fashion college drop out by choice had plans to have his own apparel brand from the time when he was working in some unrelated office work.

After studying in fashion college for a few years, he decided to launch his fashion brand and since he finds denim more industrial and easy to implement his ideas, so he started with denim and now expanded to T-shirts and other accessories including home decor, bags and shoes also. Japanese Denim has always been one of the loci of all the denim nerds due to its fabric quality and uniqueness and when Gaku Tsuyoshi launched FDMTL, there were many Japanese brands which were doing really great at that time.

FDMTL came with its unique patchwork and boro denim which became very popular within no time and still relevant due to its contemporary design and Japanese touch. In 2006, the brand started full-scale deployment in Japan and opened CATII TOKYO, the first directly operated store in Meguro-Ku, Tokyo in 2009. In 2012, FDMTL started customization service.

“I realized that there are so many jeans from Japan and all are doing good. I was kind of tired of making those kind of jeans and I realized I like things like patchwork and use new kind of technology to make my products “

Denimsandjeans Visits FDMTL Japan | DenimsandjeansAccording to Gaku Tsuyoshi, 99% of the products of FDMTL are made in Japan and rest comes from China which includes largely T-shirts and other accessories. Talking about the schedule of launching the products, Gaku Tsuyoshi believes that most of the Japanese Brands do not follow season but FDMTL is trying to schedule its launches according to the season.

  • Bob Marley Themed SS19 Collection By Kapital, Japan

Bob Marley Themed SS19 Collection By Kapital, Japan

Garments that are unrivalled are in a few and limited versions. Various brands can achieve their unique designs, can go for out of the box collections, can present new innovations and different prints but in reality most clothing stick to a draft that’s been followed many, many times before. Breaking the matrix, KAPITAL has truly achieved the originality of unconventional clothing and acessories. Based in Japanese denim-hotbed of Okayama Prefecture, the brand manufactures some of the praiseworthy collection which fuses traditional construction and dyeing techniques with a blaze of avant-garde design.

Kapital began as a company in the 1980s. Toshikiyo Hirata, founder,  discovered his love for American denim while teaching Karate in the United States. Headquartered in Kojima, Okayama Prefecture, and led by Kiro and Toshiyoko Hirata, Kapital is now one of the most respected labels in the Japanese market , with around fifteen bricks-and-mortar stores across Japan and a collection of selected overseas retailers.

Indigo denim is a fundamental element of Kapital’s collections. Kapital follows a complete different path where its product seem like an irony on the style that the garment is actually based on – asymmetrical designs, with pockets often on strange places and buttons making an irregular appearances. However, these strange silhouettes of Kapital’s clothing makes the product desirable. The SS19 collection by Kapital celebrates the Jamaican Culture and Bob Marley. It introduces the streetwear imprint of Japanese collection centering around Bob Marley. The Jamaican national color yellow , green and red is translated by the color-blocking design on the apparel. Accompanying by the patchwork, the theme can be visible by the prints that recall the Bob Marley album “Talkin’ Blues’”.Some highlights include boro-stitching, washed finishes, and distressed cuts.

Let’s check out the cool Bob Marley collection by KAPITAL:
