    How Retailers Design Their Collections

Life styles are changing and they have been changing very quickly and therefore its very important to keep a close eyes on the latest trends . How do the retailers get to know about the latest trends ? The answer lies with the Top Designers whose collections have the ingredients of the latest lifestyles and trends. The designers show their collections in Fashion Weeks (London, New York, Milan, Paris, Tokyo) and retailers follow them very closely to get inspiration from these designers. They immediately imitate or get inspired from the styles and create collections based on the same. Below are some examples as to how the retailers have copied the latest trends and put them at their stores .

A Guide For Denim Producers To Be A Successful

    Most of the garment companies start business as copiers. Retails bring the styles, they copy it. In order to do that producers need to be;

    1. Fast
    2. Cheap
    3. Good Copier
    4. Have big production quantities
    5. Have high quality and production standards
    6. Open to be supervised and controlled

    In years, successful producers realize that, in order to get the control of the business and to have better prices they need to create their own collection. To achieve this goal they build up a team to;

    1. Follow the trends
    2. Work with designers
    3. Choose fabric, accessories
    4. Design the collection
    5. Present it to buyers

    By doing that:

    • Buyers start to come to producers not because they are cheap and fast but because they give them collection ideas and full package service
    • Buyers prefer these companies because they reduce their research / design cost
    • Retails need to be fast. When the producer brings the collection they don’t lose time to replace the order.

    Most of the producers who do their own collection, create their own brand after several years of experience. Because;

    1. They know the market
    2. They follow the trends
    3. They know how to create a successful collection
    4. They already have their design team
    5. They buy fabric, accessories etc. in big quantities with good price
    6. They have big production capacities

The only thing they need to learn is “branding strategy and marketing”

    Characteristics Of DENIM BRANDS

    1. They have their own identity
    2. They give direction to denim fashion
    3. They are innovative, always looking for new and fresh
    4. They sell their products in high prices
    5. They ask for high quality standards
    6. They buy in small quantities

    Brands having difficulties in market, because;

    1. European economy, demography and high costs effects the brands
    2. Retailers have very strong denim collections and selling much less price than brands.
    3. While retailers are changing their collection  every month, brands can do it only 2-4 times in year
    4. Brands spend a lot of money to research and development

What denim brands want from a producer

Every brand has their own brand identity and they have to be unique in their league. Producers have to know what “that brand” wants as the brands don’t like to see everything. They have to believe that you understand their needs and prepare your collection accordingly. They have to believe that you are on the same page with them and You have to show them right fabric, right style with right accessories. They don’t copy your style but if you can show them what they are looking for they prefer you.Producers needs to be ready for research and development. Brands wants to work with producers as a partner and they are much more loyal than the retailers . Perfect quality, good price and confidentiality is must. They have to believe that nobody can see and copy their collection and in order to meet these demands, producers need to make a good market research to understand the brand , follow trends closely, follow the new production techniques, design the most suitable collection for each brand and have perfect quality and certification.

How you can follow the trends with minimum cost?

Below is the list of Top importing countries from whom Mexico imported Denim for the period of Jan –Dec 2016 . The list is topped by  USA  from which  60+ million square meters of denim were imported by Mexico and it also also holds 30% share in the list. China comes distant second at about 10% of import share. India , Pakistan and Italy are the countries which come next in terms of volumes of denim fabrics imported into Mexico. If we go by these figures, it is clear that where Mexico is importing 200+ million sq mtrs of denim fabrics, it is exporting only about 41 million sq mtrs. Thus Mexico is net importer of over 160 million sq mtrs . Imports from US are the highest because of the duty free imports for conversion and resale to US. Mexico has also a sizeable local production of denim fabrics and alongwith the imported fabrics, the local as well as export market is served.

  • Ruining The Jeans | How Far It Is Correct?

Ruining The Jeans | How Far It Is Correct?

It’s official: jeans in 2017 are getting weirder by the week in this year.  First came Durex jeans, and then last week a collaboration between French fashion brand Vetements and Levi brought us bare butt jeans. Now, half-leg jeans are trying to enter the fashion fold.

    bare butt jeans

Just when it seemed like 2017’s denim trends couldn’t get any more out of control, Vetements introduced arguably the craziest look yet: bare butt jeans. In case you were wondering, it is exactly what it sounds like  jeans that show off your bare butt or whatever cute underwear you have on underneath. Levi’s brought us bare butt jeans but strangely they don’t want people to ruin denim !

Why bare butt jeans? It’s part of Vetement’s on-going collaborations with 18 iconic brands to give well-known styles a modern makeover.

Social media users took to Instagram to share their state of confusion:

    “Are you serious?” one wrote.

“Please tell me that is a joke?” another posted.

And one user highlighted a possible danger involved with wearing them:

“Too dangerous, imagine if that zipper got stuck to a metal patio chair?,” they said.

We have a feeling this style may be totally ignored.

“This is tight, this is different. I’m for it,” said another.

Wherever you stand on the trend, it’s decidedly not an everyday look.

American singer and actress, Ryan Destiny, currently starring in Fox’s drama series Star, showcased the new style at Coachella in California.

Wearing a black bodysuit saying ‘Ready For Trumpocalypse’, the singer paired it with a half-leg pair of jeans – complete with a black belt and boots. WIERD!

    Trumpocalypse jeans

    Trumpocalypse jeans

Kendall Jenner recently stepped out in a pair of ‘jeans’ that seemed to be missing the legs in entirety – yet  had seams and cuffs around her feet. This look arguably made Destiny’s half-pants look seem more logical.

    INSIDE OUT JEANS

    Image: Barneys New York
True to the name of the jeans, the straight-leg blue cotton blend denim trousers look as if they’ve been turned inside out, with details like seams and interior pockets exposed. While details like these are often tucked away, the Inside Out Jeans draw attention to them, especially with pockets that are printed with sayings like: “To create something new, you must first destroy.”

    inside out jeans

They’re called ‘Clear Knee Mom Jeans’

Knee-paneled jeans are example of complete and utter fashion craziness. There seems to be no logical connection between a pair of jeans and panels of plastic stitched to them.

    knee paneled jeans

In review, it seems that designers, just to gain attention , are pushing the envelope where the jeans designs are concerned to gain attention. But real fashion does not come from such aberrations and can only be a result of hard work and innovation combined to give users a better value through the looks and comfort.

  • White Denim Does Not Fade Out !

White Denim Does Not Fade Out !

White jeans are timeless and seasonless.  With its blank canvas nature all you need are a few key accessories to them from a Bermuda-ready outfit to a date night look. You either love them or are scared of them. The thought of wearing , sometimes ,see-through jeans can be terrifying, but not if you find what works best for you. Though a Spring Summer staple, we tend to find these jeans in the collections of different brands in other seasons as well . Even missing the beauty of Indigo, the other characteristics of the denim are clearly visible on most White Jeans – whether its destructions, accessories, strong twill lines .  Checking out some of the brands who play around with white color white still remaining in the Jeans space !

    4. Denim Is Dead, Long Live Denim | Day 2

Denim has come a long way from what it originally was. It started off as a simple 3×1 twill fabric using indigo . For the first one century of the history of denim, there were not much changes in what the denim was. However, over the last 2 decades we have been witnessing huge changes in and denim is completely transforming. The next seminar was hold by very renowned denim global expert Stefano Aldighieri ( Former Creative Director : 7 For All Mankind ) , titled as DENIM IS DEAD , LONGLIVE DENIM who told us how denim is changing and what we can expect to happen in future on the same.

Bill Watson Explains Vietnam’s FTA with EU and Other Regions

Bill Watson | Denimsandjeans.comVietnam has entered into or is in the process of entering into various FTAs with different regions around the world . All these FTAs are giving a big edge to Vietnam to grow its apparel industry in the next few years. However, not much clarity is there on how these FTAs would function and what advantages they would give to different segments of the industry. This ambiguity was sought to be addressed by one of our keynote speakers – Mr Bill Watson – the MD of Coats Vietnam, Korea and Cambodia cluster . He made a great presentation at the  2nd Edition of Denimsandjeans Vietnam Show and explained lucidly about the various FTAs that Vietnam has signed or is in the process of signing. The presentation was greatly appreciated by all attendees and we bring some highlights from the same as well are providing a download link to this presentation.

We shall be shortly uploading the video with his full presentation shortly .

  • Selvedge Denim | 100% Handmade In Bangladesh By Hessnatur

Selvedge Denim | 100% Handmade In Bangladesh By Hessnatur

Hessnatur , the organic brand from Germany had been working on the Naturindigo Selvedge Jeans Project for about 2 years with an aim to create a totally hand made natural indigo dyed jeans created by local artisans of Bangladesh. And  parallel to the Fashion Revolution Day, on April 24, 2017, the first hand-woven Selvedge jeans, dyed with natural indigo and made from organic cotton was launched.  The first 150 copies are numbered.

Hessnatur wanted to  develop high-quality products in Bangladesh as alternative to fast fashion. For this purpose, Hessnatur has set up a production chain from the raw material to the finished denim fabric in Nilphamari together with the partners Deutsche Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) and Classical Handmade Products (CHP). There the organic cotton is cultivated, the indigenous plant grows in a natural environment and  the work is done in  fair social conditions. A dyeing plant with five dyers as well as a weaving mill with classic hand looms were set up especially for the project. “If we want to improve the world, we have to start where things are getting worse.

In Bangladesh, we help to build on traditional strengths and show that quality jeans can be produced with respect for people, nature and the environment”, says Vivek Batra, CEO hessnatur. “Ethics and aesthetics bring people together: a self-determined life for the workers and the people who wear the jeans have a good feeling.”

    Every Jeans Is Unique

The Selvedge jeans are handmade from natural materials. That is why every jeans is a single piece. The first 150 copies are numbered to the customer. Every jeans is  woven on traditional Japanese hand-looms: the fabric is softer, no sizing agents are used, since the warp threads are less stressed than in industrial processing. It takes one weaver around 10 days to prepare and weave 35m of denim fabric. 5 weavers are working for the project in total. Therefor the process is really slowing the production down, focussing on achieving high quality instead of big quantities. One weaver manages around 5 m per day. The warping and knotting process requires around 3 days of time. Indigo means the “Indian”, so the plant in the East of India grows quite originally. Bangladesh has a long tradition of coloring with natural colors. With the triumph of the synthetic colors, this experience has fallen into oblivion. The dyeing bath must be stirred one week before dyeing, a dye dyeing up to one kilogram of yarn per day, which corresponds to about two trousers.

Throughout the whole project time the workers and management of CHP received regular trainings through CSI Consulting and the local Awaj Foundation on different topics like Social Standards, Workers Safety, Chemical Management and Environmental regulations. The denim fabric is now available for other brands as well through Classical Handmade Products, as the main idea is to keep the production running and hopefully even expand it to create more jobs in this rural area of Nilfamari.

Short Distances, Competence Building In Bangladesh

The hessnatur selvedge jeans project in Bangladesh provides concrete improvements in the living and working conditions of the people working there. The social project in Bangladesh, launched with substantial investments by hessnatur, provides a model for other companies and shows that fair trade is also commercially suitable in  Bangladesh. In contrast to fast fashion hessnatur manufactures in Bangladesh according to traditional production methods and contributes thus to the preservation of the country’s existing crafts competencies. For the market entry, the high-quality indigo fabric is exclusively available for hessnatur. Subsequently, other companies can also access the material.

    Slow fashion at its best

In Bangladesh, indigenous plants are cultivated in fruit crops. Nitrogen accumulates in the soil. The farmers profit directly from the indigo cultivation and in the following harvesting season also a higher yield of other vegetables or fruits. The natural indigo is extracted from the leaves (indigofera). The leaves are placed in a water bath and ferment there. By continuous striking, oxygen is supplied. The dark blue water-insoluble indigo is formed from the water-soluble, yellow dye Indican. The finished indigo is dried as pebbles or liquid processed. The hand-dyed yarns are finally woven on traditional hand-looms.

Woolmark And Max Mara Develop Wool Denim for AW17

Max Mara and The Woolmark Company have together developed an innovative Wool Denim line for Max Mara’s wool-rich Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, celebrating the unique qualities of Australian Merino wool. Max Mara has utilised innovative 100% Wool Denim fabrics that replicate the look and style of traditional denim – retaining the traditional 3/1 weave – but have added benefits thanks to the natural qualities of Merino wool, including increased softness, warmth and resistance to wrinkles. The twisted, strong wool yarns have been dyed with ecological dyes to imitate natural indigo and have been tested against the  guidelines to gain Woolmark certification.

    Woolmark & Max Mara | Denimsandjeans.com

Max Mara has always chosen Merino wool as the fibre of excellence for its collections and this season has pushed the boundaries on the traditional uses of wool – such a fine tailoring, heavy coats and knitwear – to showcase a different approach for the fibre and celebrate its innate versatility.

“We are very pleased to have Max Mara showcasing Merino wool at its finest and this innovative collection will no doubt resonate with a cross-section of global consumers,” explains The Woolmark Company Managing Director Stuart McCullough. “Merino wool is a luxurious, natural fibre and Max Mara’s latest Autumn/Winter collection highlights wool’s modernity and global relevance in high-end fashion”.

“As the global authority on wool, we not only pride ourselves on being at the forefront of innovation, but also on the transfer of our knowledge of the fibre. Our expert staff have recently provided in-depth training and education for more than 180 global Max Mara staff on the natural benefits and innate versatility of Merino wool.”

To celebrate the collaboration between Max Mara and The Woolmark Company, the two brands have planned a global road show that will stop in Milan, Moscow, London, Sydney and Beijing. Scroll down to see the collection .

There have been attempts to create denim looks in various other fibers – and without real indigo – but the beauty of indigo is very hard to replace. • 80 European Brands Come To Vietnam In Anticipation of FTA 2018

80 European Brands Come To Vietnam In Anticipation of FTA 2018

About 80 European brands from the fashion and accessory, food and beverages , perfumes , interior design etc shall come under the banner of Eurosphere to HCMC on June 16 & 17 in anticipation of EU- VIETNAM FTA becoming active in early 2018. Eurosphere 2017 is a new concept trade event dedicated to bringing various European quality products to the Vietnamese and Southeast Asian market. It was introduced in the context of the new Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Vietnam (EVFTA), Vietnam being the second country in the ASEAN, after Singapore, to sign such an agreement. With strong expectations of the FTA being effective in early 2018, the European companies have started to explore the Vietnamese market in fashion and various other categories .

Vietnam’s trade with the EU in the first 11 months of 2016 totalled $40.76bn, according to Vietnam Customs. The bloc was Vietnam’s second-biggest export market, worth $30.72bn (up 9% on the same period of 2015, and accounting for 19.2% of the total), and its fourth-biggest source of imports ($10bn, up 9.7%, and 6.4% of the total). Machinery and appliances accounted for just over half of Vietnam’s exports to the EU, 50.1%, with telecommunications equipment comprising 33.5% of all exports. Footwear and hats accounted for 12.1%, and textiles and textile articles 10.4%. Vietnam’s imports from the EU, meanwhile, included machinery and appliances (27.4% of the total), chemicals (17.8%) and manufactured goods (11.3%).

Vietnam’s exports of textile, clothing and footwear to the EU are expected to more than double in 2020 as a result of the EVFTA, according to law firm Duane Morris.

EVFTA negotiations concluded in December 2015. To realise its benefits, Vietnam and the EU agreed to quicken the ratification and bring it into force in 2018. The time is not much for garment and textile enterprises to prepare till then.Vietnam’s textile and garment market share in the EU is low. By the end of 2015, Vietnam’s textile and apparel products accounted for only 1.9 per cent of the share in the EU since they are imposed a high tax rate of 8 – 12 per cent. This reduces the competitiveness of Vietnamese textiles and garments. All textiles and garments exported to the EU will be entitled zero tax per schedule to be announced soon, giving a huge opportunity for Vietnamese textile and apparel companies to boost their market shares.

Vietnamese garment exports to the EU is currently subject to a tax rate of 12% on Apparel, 11.7%; seafood, 10.8%; and footwear, 12.4%. The tax rates have posed a formidable barrier to the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods. This is particularly true in the circumstance that the EU has signed FTAs with many countries which are Vietnam’s direct competitors. A free trade pact with the EU will be a handy tool for removing this barrier. An FTA will enable these imports to be eligible for a 0% tax rate, which is expected to boost export sales to this vast market by 7-21% a year. Meanwhile, this pact will also cut down the import tariff currently slapped by the EU on Vietnamese garments from 12% to 0%. The zero tariff will substantially enhance the competitiveness of garment exports—Vietnam’s export spearhead—and is likely to bolster sales by 20% annually.

Goods produced in Vietnam using plenty of materials imported from abroad sometimes fail to meet stringent requirements of local content and thus fail to enjoy preferences given by the FTAs in question. The EU, on the contrary, often accepts a flexible regime which can be applicable on case-by-case basis. In a recent workshop on FTA between the EU and Vietnam, Le Van Dao of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association maintained that regarding this industry, its benefits and export growth will depend largely upon the agreements on Rules of Origin set in the FTA documents. In the case of the previous FTAs Vietnam has signed with Japan or South Korea, the local export garment industry has proceeded at a snail’s pace on account of meticulous certificates of origin. Learning from experience, the Vietnamese industry is interested in more relaxed rules of origin which is under consideration of the EU .

On the whole, the FTA will bring profound changes in the Vietnamese export industry and will more than cover any negatives originating from the TPP cancellation as EU is again a huge and more quality conscious market with better pricing and realisation than US.

  • Denim Premier Vision Paris Ended With Mixed Reactions

Denim Premier Vision Paris Ended With Mixed Reactions

The 20th edition as well as the 10th Anniversary of Denim Premier Vision ended with mixed reaction on April 26 at Paris Event Center, La Villette . With an objective to infuse the denim sector with new vitality by creating the denim of tomorrow by offering  new innovation strategy in order to focus more on new projects, technology and innovation , Denim PV came this time with R-Evolution after the Tomorrow is calling . There were new experiments have been done by the host and the Hackathon was one of that which caught the attentions of everyone . Denim PV was slower than last time and expectedly so since two major shows in Europe got very close in Amsterdam and Paris. Reactions of exhibitors were mixed and  the organizers have taken care to change the dates of the next show to Nov 14&15  to avoid such problems.

84 exhibitors from around the globe unveiled their latest collections, innovations and the upcoming fashion directions at the show . The show was also different this time as for the first time ever, a creative and inventive hub had been created to showcase the  real-time denim development projects designed by students from the best fashion and technology schools. In addition to that , A MASTERCLASS was setup at the show where renowned experts from other sectors put their views before the tomorrow’s denim players.

Hackathon Award, A 48-hour Creativity Hub

The show disclosed a series of new catchy projects and ideas. Among them, there was the first “Denim Premiere Vision Hackathon”. It involved five teams with five member in each teams came from different fashion universities. They were allotted a specific theme and had to create an innovative project during the 48 hours of the show timeline . The project might be either a brand concept or a marketing initiative. All these were performed inside transparent cubes – the “Hackathon rooms” – . Mentors like Stefano Aldighieri (Arvind Ltd), Romain Spinali (Spinali Design) , Fabio Adami (M&J) and Ariane Bigot (Premiere Vision) guided them and the projected presented before the jury which had Catharine Anderson Jone (Cordura), Alex Brownless (Arts Thread), Alberto De Conti (Garmon) and Alain Melloul (M.I.C.).

The winning team got €5,000 and six months of professional coaching at Denim PV.

    MYRAGS

Technology is catching up in the denim industry . This new company has been working on software to help designer create collections on their computers in collaboration of their teams continents apart. The software, specially targeted to denim industry, helps the designers to transfer the designs to their manufacturing companies directly and is aimed at helping saving time and costs. This project , which took few years to come up , has been doneunder the guidance of Umberto Brochetto . Looks like a game changer !

Coming to the aspect of  new products from different companies, we visited some of the global denim leaders and spoke to them. We bring out the some details on the latest innovations that attracted us from some of the companies.

Artistic Fabric Mills went one more step ahead in Technology and presented an app that can provide complete transparency and traceability on how their fabrics are produced – from cotton to the final fabric – up to the finished garment. Among the fabrics it brought about fabrics with injected colored wefts , brushed indigo checks and more.

Prosperity came out with its Hi Lux fabric which incorporates a special spray to make it softer and also a fabric made with 35%+ sustans – a biobased fiber by Sorona .

US Denim Mill created its stand which looked like a Grand Premier Show of any Hollywood Blockbuster movie at the show . The stand named as – ‘BIG SCREEN BLOCKBUSTERS’ where they used film references to launch textile innovations for Autumn-Winter 2018-19 collections that demonstrate how technology is creating new fashion, comfort and sustainability advantages while delivering authentic looks. The company introduced bi-stretch Selvedge – SelvedgeX, a high-tech authentic selvedge and a special Feather weave using the fibers from chicken to create a warm and cosy denim for winters.

Jeanologia launched its new Quantum technology, a new digital simulator through which they can create the final result of treatments while saving resources, energy and costs, and reducing the impact on nature.QUANTUM can send up to 100 virtual finishes per day, thus, shortening the cycle from the creative product conception to manufacturing in more than 8 weeks.

Soorty  unveiled 2 new initiatives and according to them it  will change ones’ perception for future of denim. These technological innovations are Zero Water Blue & Denim Active. Zero Water blue had  special features like organic cotton, BCI, recycled fibers, Zero water waste dyeing, eco-finishing, responsible laundering with Ozone, Laser, E-flow, Green Screen CHEMICALS and measuring impact with Jeanologia’s EIM. ZERO WATER BLUE reduces the water consumption by 90% in fabric manufacturing. Further, green chemicals, processes and machines in the laundry have reduced the water consumption per garment to 1.6 liters. Zero Water blue utilize only 3.1 liters water per garment from raw fiber till finished garment. Yet the interesting fact is that it has zero impact on color and aesthetics of final product.

Calik’s super light stretch fabric with over 80% stretch and high recovery was a novelty and seemed quite featherlite.

Kassim came out with out with a chemical development , which when applied to denim helps in absorption of pollution . Another product from them helps athletes to track their movements based on an app in the fabric.

Global Denim – This Mexican  denim company introduced a concept named as – ECOL JEAN , The New Revolutionary Water Saving Process In Denim . The company claims that on every one million meters of denim fabric , this process will save 6417.5 cubic meter wastage of water , 469.5 Kw of energy and 4000kg of dye.

Naveena has been working with renowned denim connoisseru Francois Girbaud and together with well known consultant Reinhart Oberstein came out with a denim suiting concept . These differentiated fabrics , completely removed form normal denim looks, aim to create a new niche for denims in the suiting segments and seem to open a new venue for denim industry to explore.
