  • Double Denim Finding Its Place Under The Sun ?

Double Denim Finding Its Place Under The Sun ?

Some things in this world divide opinion faster than you can say “ka-ching”. A debate on “Is Denim On Denim acceptable?” is harder than debates on pineapple on pizza, than “does cereal or milk go first” or “which of these came out first- the chicken or the egg?”

Acing the Denim on Denim look is all about your knowledge of styling, you have to earn it to wear it. This style can turn into a catastrophe the moment it goes in the wrong direction *flashback to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spear’s iconic fashion disaster*, but with the right direction, you can definitely ace it.

From Elvis Presley rocking the trend in 1957 to Marlyn Monroe showing off her curves in the movie, “The Misfits”; from Madonna acing the double denim with blow-out curls in 1988 to Naomi Campbell making the denim her own with a pair of white stilettos, from Gweneth Paltrow styling bell bottoms with a denim jacket in 2000 to Hailey Bieber pairing the style with a gold chunky necklace; these are just a few examples of the iconic denim on denim looks (done right).

    Double Denim Double Denim

Despite Double Denim being called a fashion catastrophe time and time again, no one can deny that it’s a timeless trend, much like leather jackets. It was the “In Trend” in the 80s and it’s back now, it’s that one trend that you’ll keep wanting more of. Black denim jeans paired with a patchwork denim jacket worn by a celebrity gains more attention than her red carpet look-  that’s the relevance and hype of double denim.

The moment we think of Double Denim, we associate it with Guess, the brand that was established when the trend was at its peak.

“Double-denim styling worked for Guess in the ’80s, ’90s and up until today,” says Paul Marciano, the brand’s CCO. “Denim is the symbol of freedom, it’s for everyone of all ages and all times.” The summer campaign includes double denim looks, true-blue denim shirts and paler tight-fitting jeans shot on the beautiful tropical Sicilian coast. “Denim is our roots and, since the beginning, Guess has always worked with double denim as it represents the young, sexy and adventurous.”

    Dolce & Gabbana patchwork

Keeping up with the trend, luxury brands brought impeccable double denim looks this season. With its iconic logo on an acid-washed denim jacket paired up with frayed jeans, Balenciaga started this season by following the trend. Dolce & Gabbana came out with a pair of patchworked jackets and jeans. Californian brand Amiri paired blue-black jeans with an acid-wash light-blue jacket and kept it casual yet classy. London-based LEJ and Martyn Rose are also among the many that brought a strong denim game to the market.

Double-denim is, in fact, not just a trend but a statement- a bold one at that; it represents a free spirit and a daring quintessence. It is also associated with the queer community, with them owning their sexuality with their fashion statements.

  • Sport Tech Denim Capsule By Tommy Jeans

Sport Tech Denim Capsule By Tommy Jeans

A brand new drop by the iconic American brand, Tommy Hilfiger , rooted in 90’s nostalgia comes with a 15 piece unisex collection inspired by OG 1997 collection with a modern transformation. This vintage inspired collection showcases the blended sport pieces and tech fabrics with street style denim.

The capsule is the fresh revamp of the conventional sportswear gear with vibrant and bright colors. Its a mix and match style of multiple logos with navy, purple and aqua palettes. The jackets have been revived as a shell with nylon detailing. Hoodies with multi logo pattern surely provides iconic look to the capsule. A cosy fleece with geometric patterns depicts the arriving winter season and street style-inspired accessories including fanny packs and beanies will fulfill the needs and demands in the celebration times of the season.

The capsule is entitled “ Tommy Jeans Sport Tech Denim ” and is available at the company’s website worldwide. Surprising thing is that there is nothing like denim in this collection – its either nylon or polyester fabrics with denim looks. The brand seeks to capitalize by merging two categories – Athletic Sportswear and Denim without using cotton or indigo at all . Not a bad idea many would say the way the collection has been flying off the shelf ! We have seen many such pseudo denim looks from the lowest streetwear segments to the most premium and few have been successful too .

Wrangler Launches 100 Percent Water Elimination Technology

Most of us are already aware that Sustainability is the need of the hour in the denim industry as denim manufacturing creates excessive levels of waste. Major brands are putting in efforts to conserve the environment and nature and there is increased activity down the line . Another remarkable effort made recently by the US based denim brand, Wrangler , touches another milestone in producing denims without generating waste and pollution.

The conventional dyeing process has been removed with sustainable ways of creating denim. The new innovation by the brand promises to eradicate water wastage upto 100 percent. This foam dyed technology is called Indigood  that eliminates 100 percent water waste generated through conventional dyeing methods in denim manufacturing. Not only this, Indigood reduces energy consumption and energy waste by 60 % as compared to other methods of dyeing. This new technique was created in partnership with Texas Tech University and a Spanish fabric mill , Tejidos Royo in Valencia. The detailed process of this technology was reported in an article at our site here last year when it was undergoing installation and now the actual collection is out in the market and we bring an updated info on the same.

“We’re proud to have helped pioneer a technology that has the potential to revolutionize sustainability standards for denim,” said Tom Waldron, VP & Global Brand President, Wrangler. “The introduction of Indigood™ foam-dyed denim represents our continued commitment to use our global scale to advance the denim industry, while maintaining the authenticity, quality and style that consumers expect from Wrangler.”

Usually, to prepare a single pair of jeans, it needs gallons of water and chemicals to transfer the indigo to yarn. This new process uses a foaming agent instead of chemicals and that too without wasting water to give the blue color to your denim.  Wrangler, which is owned by Kontoor Brand claims this technology as the most sustainable way of dyeing denim and hope to get other brands on board in using this technique in future.

Visit the new ICON collection by Wrangler here that includes male and female jeans , shirts and jackets in two denim sahdes – Good Day (light) and Good Night (night). Some of these are hand picked below!

  • Denim Washing Story By Tom Hawthorn

Denim Washing Story By Tom Hawthorn

The following article is an article  by Tom Hawthorn , a reputed denim veteran of over 4 decades. He reminisces about his experiences and also about the changes in the washing side of denim as he sees and how it has adapted to keep current as a fashion item across generations throughout the years.

    DESIZING or REGULAR WASHING

Started around 1977 – This was the first process which started the denim going through a transformation from raw hard mill denim fabric to a higher fashion garment . Desizing made the garment softer. We normally used Alpha Amylase for this process to break down the starch in the fabric. Fabric finishing did have to undergo many changes from the mills to make fabric more wash friendly as mills were still using insoluble fillers inside the fabric finishing to keep the tensile strength high to pass the factory tests. This caused white lines after washing and seconds. Seconds lost a huge margin.

Denim Story By Tom Hawthorn | Denimsandjeans.com

    STONEWASHING AND BLEACHING

Started around 1980. The process of pumice stonewashing  at the beginning , presented many challenges to the washers. There were no dedicated machines for this process. Fabric was often not suitable for washing or stonewashing and everyone had the quality challenge of avoiding wash lines on the garments. Different denims, although looking the same, reacted differently to bleaching. Where the fabric folds had not washed out, wash lines were created on the finished garment. These lines were often classed as seconds or irregulars at huge cost.

Denim Story By Tom Hawthorn | Denimsandjeans.com

    INTRODUCTION OF CELLULASE ENZYMES

The laboratory concept of using enzymes to boost the effect of pumice stone washing started in the USA. It was actually patented and these enzymes were observed to increase the abrasion of denim garments, lowering the amount of stones required (sometimes stones eliminated) and allowing an increase in jeans loading into the drum for reduced costs. They were cost effective but as with all new technology they presented challenges mainly in damage and loss of tensile strength in the beginning. Time and research has improved this.

Denim Story By Tom Hawthorn | Denimsandjeans.com

DEVELOPMENT OF CELLULASE ENZYMES around 1980’s

When it became clear that the use of cellulase enzymes in the denim stonewashing process was going to stay, this triggered a research race to improve the enzymes in making them lower cost, better effect with faster kinetics and less fabric damage. The leaders in enzyme technology supply remain in place with demands for better enzymes and lower prices. The old concept of “neutral” and “acid cellulase” is less clear as new products have been introduced.

DEVELOPMENT OF BLEACHING ENZYMES – LACCASE around 1993

Enzymes were developed for non chlorine bleaching alternative which made the bleaching process very environmentally friendly. These enzymes worked well but they had a certain “look” compared to chlorine bleaching and also were more expensive. They still have their place in the market but I believe cost has restricted their wider spread use. CATALASE Used as a peroxide scavenger.

Denim Story By Tom Hawthorn | Denimsandjeans.com

    LASERS – around 1999

This technology provides the business with the ability to respond quickly with a high consistency to the market response. More suppliers of this are taking their place in the market. They are making a good contribution to minimising the impact on the environment.

Denim Story By Tom Hawthorn | Denimsandjeans.com

NEW CHEMICALS TO REPLACE POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE

“PP” as it is referred to in the market is a dangerous chemical to work with and has been the target of the major brands to be replaced with a more friendly chemical. These innovation chemicals are here now in the market from companies like ACTICELL GmbH. They are available to the market.

Denim Story By Tom Hawthorn | Denimsandjeans.com

    IMPLICATIONS FOR QUALITY

Working as a quality manager for a large brand, it seemed somewhat ridiculous that we had to present a quality standard for each style. The implications of WASHING threw this into another dimension. Even with the abrasion and bleaching there had to be some recognition of quality.

    We had to consider:

1, Shrinkage (changed with the wash process) . Garments shrunk in washing.

    2. Colour. The jeans had to look similar in shade for retail.

    3. Appearance – Jeans needed to be similar looking and consistent for abrasion, damages, colour etc. .

These demands required the business to totally change in testing the fabric for shrinkage and bleach performance and grouping these rolls together to allow markers to be made with the shrinkage for that batch and also making bleach blankets of the rolls. This meant discarding the old system of matching rolls in raw mill form to washing and bleaching the rolls to make compatibility of fabric the critical factor in washing and bleaching. These were very tough times as I found myself personally leading the company with no precedent or guidance to refer to. The changes were difficult to implement.

    IMPLICATIONS FOR FACTORY MANUFACTURING

From 1983 where the attitude was to make a lot of jeans and pile them high, this changed to taking the work in progress and costs of this out of the plants. The number I recall was 9 weeks from piece goods receipt to finished goods dispatch. The concept of “just in time” arrived to demand the reduction of this “DEAD” financing cost in manufacturing due to this extremely high work in progress. Fast response to the market demand was the order of the day. Smaller lots and more complexity in every department. It was hard for the high volume plants to change and contrary to their traditional thinking.

    INCREASE OF HAND FINISHING

As the increase in hand abrasion finishing grew, this needed new thinking from the larger brands who had concentrated and focused on labour cost. Many of these jeans required 5 minutes per piece ( sometimes more) to sandpaper the finish to the fabric. This often meant that an operator produced only 100 pieces per 8 hour day. The ensuing chaos of trying to get a consistent balance of this DRY WORK to production was a big challenge to keep all these staff busy was a hard time. The transition less/ more DRY WORK, meant that often there were 100’s of these skilled staff doing nothing. This drove the laundries to push to get all jeans with handwork.

Denim Story By Tom Hawthorn | Denimsandjeans.com

    HIGH FASHION

Jeans are now being sold for high retail cost, where BRANDS identity could command high retail pricing. This required faster response to the market in lowering the bundle heights in sewing to reduce the work in progress. It has involved working with the fabric suppliers to get sequenced dyed washable fabric rolls goods for more predictable and consistent washing.

    FABRICS

Going back to the early 80’s, denim was a 3 and 1 twill warp dyed 100% cotton weave in 14 oz/sq. Yard and sometimes heavier. After this we progressed to lighter weight fabrics for the ladies markets.

The need to continually evolve and improve and to differentiate the grandfathers jeans from the teenagers jeans has introduced more fibres than cotton to the denim fabrics. The trend has also been to go lighter weight. The serious cotton crisis where Pakistan had bad floods and India stopped cotton fibre exports around 2010, forced the fabric suppliers to bring new innovation in new fabrics to the market. Now we have more than 70% of fabric containing elastomer to improve the elastic hugging effect of the fabrics and now more lighter weight . This includes other fibres like polyester, regenerated fibres( Tencel, Rayon) ,nylons and others. The term DENIM has now been extended to include these variables perhaps to assist in marketing with the recognisable DENIM name.

The old denim definition of a warp indigo dyed 100% cotton twill, is being changed with time. The story goes on….

Comeback Of Bleached Jean Trend For SS 19

Stonewashed Denim , Acid – Washes and Bleach Spots marked this season with a comeback already. Along with the fast fashion, denim trends achieve a new milestone every season . For Spring/Summer 2019, bleached denim definitely seems to have re-appeared as a striking trend. Though acid wash has been more regularly seen for last couple of seasons, this spring the light blue shade is back in types of apparel from slim jeans to western shirts to jackets.. For starters, the stuff doesn’t look like it has been attacked by toilet- chemicals and has more subtle and mature fadings.

According to TagWalk, a one-stop search engine for the enlighted fashion girl, there is an increase in bleached denim by 348 percent over the last year. The trend was spotted in multiple SS 19 collection this season. Some high end labels including Stella McCartney , Alberta Ferretti, Alexander Wang, and Balmain, represented the acid washes in the runways with pale blue colour. Indigo wash effects are more contemporary and modern .

A likely effect of this trend catching up would to take focus a little away from super stretches and soft fabrics – which have been dominating the women jeans trend for a long time. Super stretches fabrics may not be the best fabrics for this trend.
