A Talk Over PeppinoPeppino Denim Capsule Collection

Simona Testucci – an accomplished designer having worked in different reputed brands – had brought out her denim brand PEPPINOPEPPINO some time back. Looking at the latest capsule collection we were drawn towards philosophy of the brand with all the women’s denim styles inspired by original workwear and military pieces. And we thought it was time to talk to her and bring this collection for our readers.

So as you read further  below, you will find excerpts of our talk with her as well as looks from her collection flowing side by side. This collection is a selection of vintage pieces that were made for real life, durability and work. The talented pattern Alessio Ber translated them into perfect and timeless denim silhouettes.

    Q. Hi Simona, first of all, the most obvious question. Why this unique name PeppinoPeppino ?

A lot of people asked me what is the origin of the name PeppinoPeppino. Well, when I created my Instagram account (PeppinoPeppino Magazine), I was living in Berlin. I was walking in the Mitte, thinking about a name that had an Italian flavour, sounding ironic and funny and, for some inexplicable reasons, PeppinoPeppino came up

    Q. You are a well known designer working in large corporate. What prompted you to launch your own label.
I have been working in the fashion business for almost 20 years. I covered all the roles, from sales assistant, to visual merchandiser, buyer and then product manager, developing a 360 degrees experience.
In March 2015 I founded PeppinoPeppino Magazine, an Instagram account focused on denim, vintage workwear and Japanese aesthetic. Through that, I have been able to gather a group of faithful followers that understand and appreciate the style of my posts and feeds. I have wanted to create my own denim brand since I started working in the industry. It took me a while but I finally managed to do it. I launched the first PeppinoPeppino capsule at Pitti last year and I am very proud of it.
I couldn’t have been luckier to collaborate with Alessio Berto. He is an incredibly talented pattern maker, able to translate my ideas into perfect silhouettes. He has become also a friend and mentor.
I started PeppinoPeppino because I felt there was a void in the market and felt I could address that void. The denim market is definitely saturated. However, I do believe that there is still so much to explore especially when it comes to shapes and fit

    TYPE 10

50’s tailored vintage menswear pants remade in soft broken twill 100% cotton. Relaxed and easy to wear fit, with frontal double pleats and adjustable back buckle. Timeless styling .

    TYPE 11

Vintage vest remade in soft broken twill 100% cotton. A tailored piece with a one-of-a-kind sensibility and character, featuring the classic adjustable back buckle.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

Q.The capsule looks so interesting with wonderful silhouettes . You have used inspiration from workwear and military to create women denims. Tell us more about it.
I have always been fascinated by authentic craftsmanship and vintage clothing (especially military and workwear).  Nothing makes me more emotional than a pair of old denim pants or a nice piece of vintage workwear. On top of that I have been a denim lover since I finished college. It came out pretty natural to put together those two elements into a denim line.
All the PeppinoPeppino styles are freely inspired by original workwear and military pants/jackets, featuring the same volumes and details. The philosophy of the brand is combining denim and vintage pieces that were made for real life, durability and work. From FA20 the brand is dual gender, having some styles available also in men’s sizes.
What the denim market currently lacks is “emotion”. The majority of denim brands, from premium to high street, offer the same things, in terms of washes and fits, no matter how much of the cost of the product is. On the other hand, the luxury brands offer super expensive and fashionable styles, not easy to wear in your every day life.
If you asked me if I will ever do a five pockets skinny fits in power stretch fabric, I would say no. This is not the philosophy of the brand. I would never do anything that I wouldn’t wear, PeppinoPeppino denim fully represents my style. In this regard I don’t want to compromise. I hope customers will embrace this untraditional and anti-fashion way of interpreting and wearing denim.

I hope that PeppinoPeppino will be seen as a hit of freshness and newness in the current denim market.

    TYPE 12

PeppinoPeppino denim reinterprets the iconic US Navy deck jacket. A unique silhouette in broken twill 100% cotton, that becomes a cozy, oversize, cardigan. Utility frontal patch pockets with buttons closure.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 13

Overalls have become a PeppinoPeppino denim’s staple. Type 13 has been inspired by an authentic vintage French workwear overall, with the same volumes and details. The silhouette is intentionally oversize and it is made in 100% cotton Italian denim. Adjustable straps.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 14

Military chino in 100% cotton Italian selvedge denim. Easy and commercial silhouette. Mid rise, straight leg, with single frontal pleat and back flap pockets. Unusual and playful “half selvedge” finishing.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    Q. All your pieces are made in Italy. Do you think this makes a big difference to your brand. What about the fabrics, are they also from Italy.

All the garments are made in Italy, using Italian and Turkish fabrics (Candiani, Berto and Isko), accessories are YKK, with 1950’s replica zippers made by YKK Japan. I am Italian and the “made in Italy” is still, in my opinion, an additional value. I am not interested in easy margins, relocating the production abroad. I want to offer to my customers timeless and high quality products that last for a long time and get better and better with every day wear.

    TYPE 15

Rugged, vintage wool military cargo pants found in an army surplus store have been faithfully remade in 100% cotton Italian denim. Easy to wear fit, slightly cropped as per the original one, with button closure at the bottom hem.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 16

Collarless denim jacket in 100% cotton Italian denim. Like an old vintage denim trucker, this piece features frontal pleats and authentic round bartacks. A line silhouette for a more feminine appeal.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 18-R

Finally the PeppinoPeppino denim’s interpretation of a classic five pockets. Oversize, boyfriend silhouette with details taken from vintage 40’s/50’s denim pants. The authentic tobacco stitching, the buttons fly and the premium, Italian selvedge denim make this style cool .

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 18-W

Type 18 is available also washed. Heritage and authentic look with true vintage characteristics. The perfect rugged, worn-in look with an eye on sustainability.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 19

Type 19 is freely inspired by a vintage Italian biker trousers. Made with 100% premium Italian denim, this high rise overall can be adjusted at the straps and at the sides with buttons closure.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

Q.Which of the pieces from this capsule is your personal favorite?

My favorite piece is called Type 6. It is salopette, belonging to my first SP20 capsule. It is a replica of a US WWII deck overall. It is so cool and comfy. I wear it all the times!

Q.Where will you be retailing this collection.

Currently PeppinoPeppino is distributed in Italy, UK and Germany. Next step will be the US and Japan. It takes time and patience, but, like we say in Italy, “Rome was not built in one day”.

Import Of Jeans From China To EU Falls By 21% In 2019

China, the biggest exporter of apparel in the world has been going downhill when it comes to apparel exports – hit by various factors. Specially business with US has been affected due to the Trump effect. However, what is disturbing for the country is that its exports to EU have seen a big fall of over 21% in 2019 and expected to fall further. Countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam are eating away the share of China. This trend is likely to continue with Bangladesh getting stronger and also Vietnam getting FTA with EU which will enable it to ship duty free to Europe – within few years – with effect coming immediately to certain extent.  China is also actually aware of this and hence its massive investments in textile and apparel sector in Vietnam.

Lets check out in the report below to understand the import of Jeans by EU from China till September 2019.  However, all data for 2019 has been extrapolated till December 2019 for easy comparison.

Import Of Jeans By Major EU Countries

The imports of Denim apparel into EU from China for 2017 was 76.96 million pcs  with an average price of Euro 6.44/Pc which further increased by 10% to 84.93 million pcs at an average price of Euro 5.13/Pc in 2018. Import for the first nine months of 2019 is 50.10 million pcs and if the same trends continues the import are likely to  be 66.81 million pcs at the end of the year 2019. We see that China may actually export more jeans in 2018 to EU than it did in 2017. Thus if the projected figures are achieved, we will see about 66.81 million pcs of jeans being exported from China in 2019 against about 84.93 million pcs in 2018.

Germany which is one of the biggest buyers in EU, has been reducing the imports from China by every passing year. In 2017, the share in the import was 18% which reduced to 16% now , if you look at the import volumes,  Germany reduced its import from China by apporx. 4 million pcs of jeans . The other countries including France , UK and Spain have likely to import lesser jeans as compared to 2017 .  The trend of average price has been also very fluctuating and in most of the cases, increased however Italy and Netherlands’s average price are an exception to this.

QOQ is the theme of the 5th Edition of our Denimsandjeans Vietnam Show which is scheduled for May 28/29 at Riverside Palace, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. QOQ: Quality over Quantity. As the fashion world is changing, we are expecting a number of current trends to reverse.

The impact on the environment is forcing consumers and suppliers alike to rethink the FAST FASHION trend. Increasingly the consumers are thinking of buying lesser and more quality products and this will definitely impact the supply chain. Over a period of time, we will see that Quality will be preferred over Quantity and consumers may want to retain and use their apparel longer. So, we think it’s the right time to start thinking of all the aspects of QOQ. Hence the theme !!

Report On Japanese Fabric Export - 2017 To 2019

Thus the overall volumes of exports from Japan have gone down and also to some extent the prices. This reflects the difficult situation of the market globally which is also affecting Japan. Their productions are not huge in Japan and shifting their productions overseas as far as possible . Nisshinbo and Kurabo shifted their productions long back and even Kaihara makes more in China than in Japan. Other companies like Kuroki etc have also reduced productions.

  • Ian Berry does it again – pushes his work to yet another level

Ian Berry does it again – pushes his work to yet another level

Ian Berry has had another sell out and successful show in London, with all the work selling by the opening day. His exhibition Hotel California also gained critical success with London magazine Londonist naming it the must see show of the month, and FAD putting it in the top seven shows to see in July. The BBC covered it and soon it will be beaming around the world and various channels, but, it is in person you need to see the work – and many did in London. Ian Berry turned denim back to water with his incredible technique which when you stand back totally don’t realise is denim.

‘When I started I always wanted to point out it was denim, now I hide that it is denim and see that as a challenge.’ Ian said.  In fact after years of covering his work, you see it is a challenge in each show, how light hits a metallic shiny launderette washing machine, a polished bar top, or the inside of a subway.

We wrote about his Behind Closed Door work (https://www.denimsandjeans.com/recovery/events/behind-closed-doors-by-ian-berry/23754) and again, it was light in interiors that created his moods, impressing with the tiles on the floor and how the light effected it, just out of denim. That show was quite dark and Ian has transformed this new work to reflect bright Californian light with the hotels and pools of the state which made denim the state’s official fabric! The show was such a success that they put on another event to mark it and Ian’s long relationship with the gallery. It was also in aid of British charity Jeans for Genes – that supports families with Genetic Disorders. The charity is famed for an event in September – Jeans for Genes day, where schools and workplace allow people to wear our favorite material, jeans in return for a donation. The event raised money for the charity.

The charity also sells shirts, this year working with Batman for a special shirt. Ian is one of their ambassadors and modelled the shirt for the charity. The Batman version with Warner Brothers is proving popular with children. Ian will do further work with the charity. Not only that, but Ian collaborated with Kongsgaard Raw Gin to make a special denim edition. The Danish Gin makers are famed for their use of apples and also their sustainability – the only Gin brand to plant a whole forest and will be soon carbon neutral! The Gin is hand crafted so Ian made an edition of ten hand crafted labels – all the letters cut by hand, another ten with Raw denim – the ‘Raw Limited Edition’ that Tonello helped to laser. And then a further five that were one off originals and made to reflect different pieces of work in Ian’s exhibition – like his Hotel California record store, the secret Garden (that hung in the gallery window, again with the support of Tonello) and one to reflect a pool.

The week before the show opened Ian was in Barcelona with Tonello where he collaborated with his friends there who had been showing with ITMA, their most important event. To celebrate they had a ‘Inspiring’ night where Ian, Tonello and his friend Juan Manual, along with Oficina +39 joined forces to make a new version of the hanging trellis that hung in New York – lit with a mood and a beautiful film of the making of that set a beautiful ambience for the evening.

ElleTi Event M.O.D.E. Inauguration – Notes By Mr. Stefano Aldighieri

This is a guest post by Stefano Aldighieri , Ex Creative Director , Levis

ElleTi laundry in San Bonifacio, Italy, held an event on June 19th to inaugurate a denim museum and showcase their gigantic reference library.

A few hundred lucky members of the denim community had the opportunity to view the Stadium library and the Denim Museum, containing some of the best pieces of historic jeans ever seen.

A panel discussion preceded the inauguration ceremony. I had the pleasure of heading the discussion, with some of the key figures in the blue world, Adriano Goldschmied (no need for introduction), Jason Denham, founder of Denham, Tony Tonnaer, founder of Kings of Indigo, Matteo Sinigaglia, C.E.O. of Fashion Box (Replay), Matteo Marzotto, president of Dondup, and Alberto Candiani, C.E.O. of Candiani Denim.

ElleTi Event M.O.D.E. Inauguration – Notes By Mr. Stefano Aldighieri | Denimsandjeans

We discussed denim, of course: Yesterday, (Why are we still looking at vintage? Do you remember your first jeans?), Today, (Other than price, what are the key reasons for customers to buy, and  Is all this talk about sustainability changing the way your company operates, and how? ) and Tomorrow, (New technologies are changing how and where we design, produce and sell our product; what is the biggest challenge and the biggest opportunity?).

The debate was very well appreciated by the large group of attendees.

ElleTi Event M.O.D.E. Inauguration – Notes By Mr. Stefano Aldighieri | Denimsandjeans

The Stadium is a truly impressive display of over 13,000 pairs of jeans items, a mix of development samples from the old Martelli Archives, from the current ElleTi archives and several market samples. This is probably the most comprehensive reference library in our business, it will be a very useful tool for research and development for all the ElleTi current and new customers.

The inauguration of the Denim Museum was the highlight of the event

ElleTi Event M.O.D.E. Inauguration – Notes By Mr. Stefano Aldighieri | Denimsandjeans

I was invited by ElleTi to help them curate and catalog the collection: over 100 incredible pieces,in great shape, many examples from labels that have long disappeared … Some of the rarest garments are represented here in more than one example, giving an incredible view of historical pieces.

Among them, Levi’s Type 201 (the “value” alternative to the famous 501XX), the style 333, the original 701 (first women’s jean ever made), some World War II 501s, the original Lee 101 Cowboy with arcuate stitching, a dozen examples of Boss Of The Road, several early Stronghold … and many more unknown brands that disappeared many decades ago.

Fragments of garments that were most likely found in old gold mines give us a glimpse into the real wild west.

Vietnam has gained more importance in last few months not only because of business treaties including EVFTA and CPTPP, but also due to ongoing tariff trade war between China and USA. China has  been facing heat from USA due to increased duties but the rising labor cost has been becoming a major problem for China and this has created a  good opportunity for Vietnam. A number of companies from China have already started investing in Vietnam to avoid the duty problems in exporting from China. This trend is likely to continue and looking at other benefits in Vietnam , many other countries including Taiwan, Korea and Japan are increasing their investments in Vietnam – and the garment sector is one of the most benefitted one.

From China & HK , leading denim fabric suppliers including Prosperity , Blackpeony ,Foison Textile , XDD Textile, Chanzhou Thome Textile, Zhejiang Xinlan Textile, and Guangzhou Indenim Textile are participating at the show. Prosperity Textiles have recently built their factory in Vietnam and  started their operation and are expected to increase the capacities to a big number.

Reports suggest that Pakistan has been also increasing its exports to USA and hence Vietnam is one of the most strategically growing market for them as well. From Pakistan, the show will have Artistic Milliners, Kassim Denim, Crescent Bahuman, Soorty , Indigo Textile and US Denim Mills . All these companies have been catering to important buyers/brands/retailers including Levis, H&M, Tesco, Inditex, C&A, PVH, GAP and Li Fung.

India has also got a great advantage as its fabric has only 7.5% as duty in Vietnam and due to having a great diplomatic relationship between the both countries , the duty is expected to be reduced further in next 2-3 years. From India, Arvind Limited, KG Fabriks, Bhaskar Denim, Anubha Industries, Malwa and Ramsons are exhibiting.

    Female Power

The 2017 Golden Globe Awards witnessed a revolutionary incident. The most influential actresses in the world started a protest by wearing black. They said, “Enough, we’ll speak up,” and rose up against the sexism, sexual harassment, rape, and unequal pay they have been suffering from as they were climbing the ladder of success. The response to #metoo and #timesup grew like snowball.

    Free-thinking, free-wearing women

This uprising by women also stood against the attempt to stereotype them. Always forced to look young, sleek, and fit, women challenged the pressure and started dressing freely. The runways have been filled with female models with different body types, ages, hair, and makeup for famous fashion houses. This movement was quickly adopted by the street as we saw women replacing skinny and tight jeans with baggy and comfortable clothing.

This style reflected the free spirit of the ‘80s. Free to wear what they want and act however they want, the women brought back the denim looks of the ‘80s.Rigid or comfort stretch fabrics have been woven with open-end yarns and turned into salt and pepper effects. Looks became simpler, slubs disappeared, and washing techniques made plainer.

Now is the return to the essence of denim

This simplification, going back to basics, and discovering one’s inner beauty have been going hand in hand with an effort to return to the essence of denim. After becoming only “indigo-dyed fabric” with stretch fabrics that have been dominating the last 20 years, denim is looking for its true identity.First, denim has reset itself with the plain looks of the ‘80s and now it’s reclaiming its authentic look with slub effects, deep indigo colors, and visible twills.

Bearing great significance in terms of yarn characteristics, indigo colors, and construction, these looks also require a true expertise of denim. These fabrics, some of whose finest examples we’ll be seeing in the near future, will further highlight the importance of washing. The plain washing techniques will be replaced with those that underline lines and scrubs, revealing the character of denim. In short, denim continues to tell its origin story to the youth of today and to invite them to learn about and appreciate this special fabric.

Interview Session With Dr. Vu Hung Dang, CEO PPJ By Denimsandjeans

    1. PPJ has come a long way in last 10 years. How do you think the journey evolved which enabled the company to reach such heights in a short period?

PPJ started as a traditional garment manufacturer like any other, the difference was that we were curious to learn and evolve as fashion is ever changing .We have a vision to be a Global Brand and for that we structured our self to be a “One stop solution “Vertical Mills / State of the art factory / Sustainable laundry and an infusion of software in production /planning /warehousing has shifted the game by 360 degrees.

We also pride in our people from multi-cultural back ground who are immensely talented. A great company is built with right vision/people/technology and we have all of this in our mix. Today when customers and Brand think of Vietnam; PPJ is the fore front leader.

    2. You are now the most successful Vietnam owned company who has run well the end-to-end supply chain solutions. How can you help the other companies to change their model from CM to ODM form like yours in order to escape CM life?

Vietnam garment industry was a traditional industry last 20 years with a CM mindset as the Retail evolved with customer mindset influenced by the internet the brands looked at partners who could bring in novelty, innovation , supply chain solutions and PPJ was ahead of the game and became the “Easy Button “. Once this model was successful the other companies also saw the benefit and progress and changed their mindset accordingly.

    3. Your Innovation Center is amazing facility and I understand it creates over 25,000 garments in a month for sampling and test order purpose. What was the vision behind creating this unique center for the global denim buyers to come and experiment for their requirements?

Innovation is the Soul of the company , it’s the engine which drives the creativity and the reason why we are ahead of the game. It’s a perfect world of Green building /Robots /E Flow/Laser/Ozone /Smart Lab/ 3D Technologywith washing /stitching /embroidery/Novelty Embellishments… all under oneroof .

This is the Holy Grail where the doors are open to designers, innovators to create history our dedicated design team has been able to teach and mold many fashion trends .Many of the iconic designers have worked in our facility on concept to final product. It would not come as a surprise to see PPJ as a Brand in the future.

    4. PPJ has strong focus on sustainability. What are the key initiatives you are focusing on in this regard and what are future targets in this regard?

Earth has no substitute it’s our endeavor to preserve and offer a better planet to the generations ahead .Key focus are Water reducing / recycling by 96%. Green chemicals which benefit consumers and are very less pollution to the environment. We are investing heavily in Solar energy, robotics.

Most important we are working very closely with Brands in implementing best practices of sustainability .Responsible manufacturing is being inculcated in every employee of PPJ

    5. I understand that your new unit of 20,000 garments per day is being set up with only 200 workers and high level of automation. This would be a great achievement. What kind of automations are being used for this facility and do you plan to extend this further?

This is our dream project which in already in the works .Technology of Precision Engineering /Robotics /Advanced machinery/DCS system would be put together to achieve this .We have a R&D machine center which modifies and creates new value added fixtures to reduce manpower by 50% or higher. This will revolutionize garment industry from manual to machine independent /error prone manufacturing.

    6. PPJ is working with a number of globally reputed customers. What customers you are currently working with and also targeting to add in 2019-2020.

PPJ has a large USA presence of reputed brands as American Eagle Outfitters,Express,Abercombie& Fitch, Target,Pacsun ,Chico’s ,Rock Revival, Urban outfitters…Our focus now will be to add new customers who believe in sustainability and also make rapid inroads into other parts of the world. We would have offices /manufacturing /design centers globally.

    7. Your units are spread out in different provinces in Vietnam. How PPJ supply chain management does ensure a smooth offering to all customers with great versatility of products?

Supply Chain starts from Raw material to finished product at customer DC .For us it is from Raw material to customer .We have 4 divisions

    • Denim division: in HCMC
    • Woven division: in Danang
    • Knit division: in Hue
    • Suits & Outerwear: in Hanoi

We have a robust tracking software implemented across the cross functional line from Yarn to final product this is combined with an integrated module of vertical fabric / sewing / laundry. This gives us a read and react scenario and efficiently reduce the dwell time

    8. Why do you think Vietnam is becoming an important sourcing destination for many global brands? What are the key strengths of Vietnam which are helping in this regard?

Vietnam exports textile and apparel to the countries and territories around the world and ranks at the 3rd place of global supply chain just after China and India. Garment production accounts for 70% and textile manufacturing accounts for 30% of the total businesses in this sector and there is 85 % of export. Main markets for Vietnam textile and garment products are U.S., Europe, Japan and South Korea, China … For a long time, the U.S. has remained the largest importer of Vietnamese textiles and garments, followed by Europe and Japan, which has led to rapid development of the country’s textile and garment industry. Besides the lower labor costs, Vietnam has also good skilled workers for high-end garments.

The industry’s exports value will estimate to reach US$ 40 billion this year 2019 and around US$ 45 billion by 2020. Although exports are predicted to grow, Vietnamese manufacturers need to focus on value addition. Vietnam continues to depend on raw imports, which makes it harder for firms to take full advantage of the free trade agreements with tough “rules of origin” conditions. In addition, rising labor costs in China are pushing firms to countries like Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam which has been beneficial for the industry.

Stability, skilled man power , infrastructure and social /political situations in surrounding countries are influencing Vietnam to be One of leading players in today’s market .

9.How do you foresee the treaties like CPTPP (already initiated) and upcoming ones like EVFTA affecting growth of apparel exports from Vietnam and its further evolution. Is that the reason for you to take charge of some leading positions in different manufactures of Vinatexat the same time?

Vietnam’s bilateral and multilateral FTAs continue to provide Vietnamese manufactures access to new markets, minimizing the effect of growing trade protectionism. With new FTAs is in effect such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) from 1 January 2019 and Vietnam – EU FTA will be estimated to put into effect by 2020, new markets will lead to higher exports and push manufacturers to develop the industry’s supply chain so that Vietnam can take full advantage of the preferential tariffs and increase the competitiveness of their products.

That is why Phong Phu’s ODM successful module is being replicated in garment enterprises of Vinatex which is making a big impact in the fabric /Garment sector.
