With a consumer size of 125 billion people, liberal FDI norms and unified taxation, India has all which an investor looks for. Most of the large global retailers already have a presence in the country and over 20 important International brands are further expected to enter India by the end of 2020. The latest addition to this is UNIQLO- one of the biggest Clothing retailers from Japan, which is launching its first store in India in 2019.

The existing brands like H&M, GAP and Zara are already on their expansion spree and their target regions are not only Tier I metro cities but more importantly over 100 Tier II cities which are throwing up large consumer base. Zara has over 20 stores in India, H&M is planning to open 50 stores by 2020 and GAP is eying on adding 3-4 new stores per year to cross INR 1000 crore sales mark soon.

Here is what some of the exhibitors’ feedback on the latest edition of Denimsandjeans India Show

“We feel that the inflexion point both in terms of buoyancy of markets and sourcing base is about to be reached and it will entail large growth in both segments. The restructuring of the taxation systems etc did have some impact on the industry but we see a large overall growth coming up in 2019-20 which will further increase in the following years”  Sandeep Agarwal

  • Resurgent India – India’s Growth Story By Mckinsey & BOF

Resurgent India – India’s Growth Story By Mckinsey & BOF

India is currently the fastest growing large economy globally . The country has been changing structurally in the recent years and though, on the one hand , it has caused some disturbance, on the other there have been rectifications in the structure of the industry which has created very positive outlook for the country . A recent report by Mckinsey and Business of Fashion gives a big thumbs up to the growth story in India and this includes the fashion and apparel manufacturing industry. We bring some excerpts from this article on Business of Fashion.

      • Expected annual GDP growth from 2018 to 2022 – 8%
      • Middle class growth rate 19.4%
      • 300 international fashion brands are expected to open stores in India in the next two years
      • Organized retail is less than 35% of total retail. This will be about 45% in 2025
      • Ten years ago 5 million smarphones and 45 million on internet. Now 355 million and 460 million respectively. By 2021 more than 900 million will be online
      • E-commerce leaders moving to AI solutions.
      • Growth of textile and apparel exports is expected to accelerate
      • 41 percent of chief procurement officers expect to increase their sourcing share from India
      •  High availability of raw materials e.g., cotton, wool, silk, and jute will help in this increased sourcing
      • Traditional clothing is still very much the default choice for women, making up an estimated 70 percent of women’s apparel sales in 2017. Appetite for Western styles is likely to increase
      • Indian authorities are certainly keen to promote investment. Relaxed FDI regulations (e.g., allowing 100 percent foreign-owned single brand retail operations), will likely lead to more overseas-originated activity through the value chain.

Sanjay Kapoor, founder of Genesis Luxury, an Indian luxury retail conglomerate, higher incomes are likely to create a whole new class of consumer: “We are moving on towards the ‘gold collar’ worker. It’s a term that defines the well paid, highly paid professionals, who are happy to look good, happy to feel good and are expanding the consumption of today.”

The points mentioned in the Mckinsey/ BOF report are known already but its great to be authenticated by global knowledge experts. The Indian apparel market is growing and so it the denim market within it . Though we have seen some overcapacities recently, the industry is set to regain its agility in the near future. Textile and apparel is again becoming a focus area for Indian govt. with several states in India offering special investment opportunities which are attracting large corporates to set up apparel parks – something which was not visible in last decade and beyond . The increasing consumption locally for large retailers like H&M, Reliance, Future Group, Inditex and others requires organized productions which is attracting large investments in this long forgotten area.

So, while on one hand, we will see a market which is strongly growing – creating opportunities for local and international suppliers, on the other hand we are likely to see increased sourcing of apparel and textiles from India as the strengths build up. India is still much cheaper than China when it comes to costs and this gives it an advantage as a sourcing destination.

Check out complete report by BOF here

The theme of our next show in India corroborates what the report by Mckinsey states – that India is on ascent. We will celebrate this fact with our theme which will focus on the growing strengths of the Indian economy and Industry ! Do mark the dates and wait for updates.
