Vietnam is showing great promise because of its increasing importance due to various pacts. There are several trade agreemens and treaties lined up in Vietnam with countries and group of countries and implementation of which will surely lead to a massive growth in the apparel productions and exports . The EVFTA is one of the much-awaited trade agreements which the world is waiting for it to get signed. This new-generation trade agreement between Vietnam and 28 EU member countries. The negotiations on the EVFTA officially concluded on December 1, 2015, and the preliminary text of the agreement was released on February 1, 2016. The EVFTA was split into two Agreements, one for trade and one for investment, on June 26, 2018. Vietnam and the EU formally completed the legal review of their EU-Vietnam FTA and the IPA (the Investment Protection Agreement) in August 2018.

By the end of August 2018, 24 out of the 28 EU countries had invested in Vietnam, with 2,141 valid projects worth some US$24.17 billion. Among the EU investors, the Netherlands takes the lead with 318 projects valued at US$9.16 billion, followed by France with 527 projects worth US$3.63 billion, the UK and Germany. The EU is now the third largest trading partner and one of the two largest export markets of Vietnam. The import and export structure of Vietnam and the EU complement each other with a less direct competition. Two-way trade revenue between Vietnam and the EU increased more than 12 times from US$4.1 billion in 2000 to US$50.4 billion in 2017.

➤ Jagger made rock cool, sexy and dangerous.

    27

    28

➤ The popular culture of the 1980s reflected the period of political conservatism.
➤ The symbol of the decade was the “yuppie”: a baby boomer with college education, a wellpaying job and expensive taste.
➤ They were, more concerned with making money and buying consumer goods than their parents and grandparents had been.

    29

➤ American television owners got cable service- and the most revolutionary cable network of all was MTV
➤ The music videos made megastars
➤ MTV also influenced fashion: People across the country (and around the world) did their best to copy the hairstyles and fashions they saw in music videos. Michael

    30

    31

➤ MTV also became a forum for those who went against the line or were left out of the yuppie ideal.
➤ Rap artists and heavy metal acts also captured the sense of discomfort among young people
➤ Even as Reagan maintained his popularity, popular culture continued to be an arena for dissatisfaction throughout the 1980s

    32

    33

➤ Generation Y, “The Next Great Generation”, Millennials are “digital natives”, having never known a world without personal technology
    ➤ Educated, involved and CONNECTED.
➤ Culture is impact technology and technology is impacting culture.
➤ These young adults share similar life experiences, musical tastes, food, and entertainment, and can even talk about favorite sports teams, movie stars and multinational brands

    34

➤ Rise of the Fast Fashion: Affordable clothing on the latest high fashion designs.
➤ With its low cost appeal driven by trends straight off the runway, fast fashion was a significant factor in the fashion industry’s growth.
➤ This trend allowed shoppers to own designers items at lower prices, also allowing the acceptance and production of copycat styles.

    35

➤ Since 2004, H&M have been inviting top fashion designers to collaborate with them on their seasonal clothing line
➤ We can see from these collaborations that the product design is only helped by the input of someone who knows where fashion trends are headed, by using invaluable resources, materials and customer base held by the H&M brand.

    36

    37

    38

Trend Area At 3rd Denimsandjeans Vietnam Show

Vietnam has become one of the favorite destinations for the sourcing heads now and the recent events including the CPTPP treaty, upcoming EVFTA treaty and the increased compliance pressure on Chinese companies has brought the country back into focus. Denim is one of the key growth area for the industry as the production and exports increase over the last couple of years.
. Amidst all, the 3rd season of Denimsandjeans Vietnam  , scheduled for June 27 & 28 at Ho Chi Minh City,  has been attracting the attention of apparel retailers, brands and factories, especially from EU and US regions.

The Theme – ROCK N ROLL

ROCK N ROLL is bringing into focus the important place that denim occupies in the rock and roll history. Denim and rebel music have had a long-standing relationship that goes all the way back to the days of Elvis Presley, James Dean, the Beatles, Rolling Stones and other names around the 60s. Basically evolving from American origins, the Rock n Roll developed sub cultures in UK and several styles started becoming synonymous with it.

The rock n roll looks and its effect on denim can be seen in resurgence with skinny jeans for men and dark and grunge denims, leather combinations and more! This show will be a small tribute to the classic era of Rock N Roll Fashion and their pioneers including Elvis Presley & James Dean etc.

“Buyers from US and especially from EU are showing keen interest in Vietnam in anticipation of EVFTA and our show enables them to find all the international and domestic suppliers at one place and therefore we are pretty much sure about its success and initial trends of buyers’ registrations for 3rd edition has strengthened my belief” said Mr. Sandeep Agarwal

Denim PV Coming Up This Week

After celebrating 10 years in 2017 , Denim Premiere Vision, is back with the fresh players on the board after getting relatively cold response in its previous shows. This edition is going to be the litmus test for the Denim PV and hence the stakes are very high this time.

Each season for the last 10 years, the show has reinvented itself to better meet the needs of a demanding and versatile industry, and the expectations of brands and of consumers in the constant quest for what’s exclusive and inspiring. This year will be a crucial year for Denim PV as the company has announced its new destination and has made Denim PV’s Paris show an annual event. Denim PV will be organised alternately in Paris, the global capital of fashion, and in a European city with a strong fashion influence. The aim is to encourage proximity with fashion and design markets while offering the sector new sources of inspiration. The venue for May edition is  Parc Floral de Paris.  In this edition , 73 international Denim companies from Europe, USA, and Asia are participating and interestingly there are many new entrants in the list this time also. Denimsandjeans Vietnam And India Shows 2018

    2000px-Flag_of_Vietnam.svgDENIMSANDJEANS.COM VIETNAM | JUNE 27-28

Vietnam, being one of the most important sourcing destination , has become the favorite destination for the sourcing heads. The country is already a large supplier of apparel to US and EU and is expected to further grow in the coming years as the pending FTA with EU goes through mid of this year as expected by the authorities. This will bring numerous opportunities for the country to grow itself and play a much larger role as international supplier of apparel globally. Vietnam has currently about  6,000 garment related companies that employ 2.5 million people and exported $28 billion worth of clothes in 2016. Vietnam is the 2nd largest exporter of apparel to the US behind China. Though the free trade agreement with the US and Vietnam (TPP) was chopped by President Trump but Vietnam is still able to produce for their US customers with reasonably competitive price. From a labor cost perspective, Vietnam Garment Industry in 2017 is cheaper than China and Eastern Europe. Vietnam has signed many bi-lateral trade agreements with other countries including Russia recently which in long run benefits the local as well as the International Denim Supply Chain Partners.Vietnam has very favorable trade policies and the labor conditions are very stable as compared to other countries. In the latest Apparel Survey Report released by Mckinsey , Vietnam ranked in top 5 as the best sourcing destinations in the world.

The 3rd Edition of Vietnam show is scheduled to be held on June 27-28 at Riverside Palace, Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam . The theme of the show would be ROCK N ROLL bringing into focus the important place that denim occupies in the rock and roll history . Top Denim Mills , Chemical & Dyeing Manufactures along with other supply chain partners will be participating from different parts of the globe including from Vietnam, India, Pakistan, China, Hongkong, Korea , Thailand and Italy. World’s largest democracy ,2nd largest market and 3rd biggest economy , Yes ! India is a country of massive opportunities especially in the Retail sector . The country will be touching the magical figure of USD 1 Trillion by 2020 so far as the Indian Retail Industry is concerned. Few decades ago , the country ruled the International Textile Industry and after such a long gap , India is again attracting the International Retailers as the taxation and ease of doing business are becoming more favorable for the foreign investors.

Denim has been one of the main booming textile segments in India in the past decade. Whereas in 2005 the consumption of jeans in India was less than 300 million pieces, today its almost doubled with an annual growth rate of more than 10%. This gives India the distinction of being the second largest consumer of denim apparel after China. India is set to get a big lead over US and EU in coming years, as its consumption increases in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and consumption reaches about 1 billion jeans in next 5 years !

The 1st edition of Denimsandjeans India was a great success and witnessed the phenomenal attendances throughout the show. With over 1500 visitors from all the major brands, retailers, buying houses etc in India and some from overseas, it was probably the best aggregation of denim industry in India in a very  long time. The post show report of the last show can be read here. The 2nd edition is scheduled to be held on August 01-02 at Hotel The Lalit , Bangalore. The theme of the show would be DENIM GENDERFREE which seeks to bring focus on the growing trend of creating unisex denim collections.

    ECO WASH

The company has developed ECO WASH which is more sustainable as it consumes less water and cause minimum harm to the environment. Eco wash is a set of processes, which was finalized with the introduction of ICELITE – washing with dry ice . The company already uses ozone process for aging of pieces without water. Until now, it was done with chemicals and wet processes . The laser is also one of the processes in the EcoWash method  .

The ice lite processes consists an ice blast with tiny particles that are pumped in order to give the jeans an abrasive finish. The company also calculated some indicators during the development  of these techniques and GLOBAL WARMING was one of those . As per the estimate of the  company reached to this conclusion that if this technique will be used for 100 years , the potential of global warming reduces significantly over by over 50% in relation to garment industry. By using the Eco Wash Method instead of the traditional method , there will be minimal emissions to the air , water and soil .  In Nutshell , this method satisfies the purpose of SUSTAINIBILITY to the certain extent.

Stretch Denim Or Rigid Denim In Men’s Fashion | A Presentation By Dr Dilek Erik

Dr. Dilek – a reputed international denim product and marketing consultant from Turkey brought out an interesting perspective on the prevailing denim trends at the 1st Edition of Denimsandjeans show held in Bangalore on Sept 25&26.  She believes that , ‘Fashion is about how we live, when the interests, opinions or behaviours of a society change, it effects fashion as well as other living areas.’  Dr Dilek also believes that , “GENDER-FREE” is one of the biggest influencer in fashion industry today and many international brands including H&M are selling such GENDER FREE garments which ultimately supports the idea of gender equality . To support her claims , she quoted a fashion magazine’s where it says , ‘ Boys don’t have to be boys , girls don’t have to be girls ,gender-free fashion means everything goes.’

    RIGID vs STRETCH

Rigid is coming back into the fashion but that doesn’t mean that stretch has been fading away , No ! , its not . But Yes ! rigid with little stretch is making its comeback into the International Fashion. Earlier ,there was an assumption which persisted for ages also that men’s jeans have to be ‘manly’ – rugged, tough, weathered and worn , however as fashion evolved ,  choice for men’s jeans shifted from  rigid towards stretch  . Once the stretch came strongly on to the denim  fashion scene , it was everywhere and after a point of time , it was hard to find men’s jeans without stretch. This continued for many years and stretch became the new normal. However, this also started the reverse process ie of finding something that feels comfortable but does not look like stretch.

Jonathan Cheung, SVP of Levi’s® Global Design said once ,

“If you pick up a pair, you won’t see that they are stretch, you just see a pair of 501®’s. That’s important. We wanted to make the technology invisible. But the minute you try them on, you’ll feel the difference. It’s subtle, but you’ll feel it,”

So the question is still there , What are those important factors which matter to consumers while purchasing Men’s Jeans ? Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor conducted an interesting survey in 2015 and according to that , The first and the foremost factor is – FIT and thereafter COMFORT , the two basifundamental factors which are the most important affecting the purchase decision for Men’s Jeans . Inspite of its universal presence , STRETCH is way down the list.Men are , perhaps, subconsciously amalgamating stretch component into FIT & COMFORT.

Expert Opinion On “Stretch Denim Or Rigid Denim In Men’s Fashion” By Dr Dilek Erik

How can you create a rigid look with a stretch denim?

    Basic Requirements

    Elastane  1-2 ( %)  and Elasticity  18-22 (%)

In order to achieve these ratios:

    Yarn:

    • Thick tread in warp and weft
    • Thicker warp èevident weave
    • More cotton, less elastane  heavier fabric
    • Component warp (with T400, PBT or polyester)- it is important for the recovery

    Weave:

    • 3×1 or BT
    • Open construction (it is important to show the weave)

    Finish:

    • Regular- natural denim look (w/o mercerization)- be careful about elasticity
    • Special finishes- Mercerized or coated- Fixation is very important
