Tomorrow Is Calling | Denim PV 2-3 Nov. 2016 | Denimsandjeans

Denim by PV comes back to Paris on November  2nd and 3rd Nov and will be held at Paris Event Centre. The last 5 editions of DPV were held at Barcelona from where it has moved back to Paris . With over 77 exhibitors from around the world, DPV hopes to draw in more than the 4000 international visitors who came in the last show.  The Director of Denim PV – Chantal Malingrey – says

“New consumers -the millennials, Generation Z (or C for creation, collaboration, communication, connection)– move the boundaries and call into question well-established principles. Denim Première Vision wants to speak to insiders as well as the new generation of designers of fashion and denim. We are going to put forward new experiences to stimulate brands’ imagination and enable buyers and designers to better understand the issues of creation and consumption. This is to develop experiences around this unique material: denim.

    Products

Some of the key exhibitors showcase the details of the products that they are going to launch at PV. The main focus of their launches and new products seems to be ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Eco-Initiatives’.

    Vicunha Textil

    Vicunha At PV

VICUNHA denims are distinguished by 100% BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton. The recycling processes, as per company,  are so efficient that there is no waste at the end of the production phase. VICUNHA is the largest individual consumer of BCI cotton in the world. The fabric range also includes a series of styles made using three recycled PET bottles per metre and which require around 80% less water to produce. Launched this season, the ECO RECYCLE range of fabrics incorporates waste yarn which is recycled back into the spinning process to create new yarn.

    SOORTY

    Soorty At PV

Soorty launches a collection that is sustainable from raw fiber till washed garment. The company aims for responsibility in each and every stage of their vertically organized production process. Soorty offers green fibers, sustainable dyes and processes, eco- finishes and responsible washing.

    Prosperity

    Prosperity-300

Prosperity Textile has continued to expand its offering of hydrosulfite-free indigo colours by introducing Carmine Blue: a unique 70’s inspired indigo shade that is a perfect colour for vintage inspired denims, either rigid or with a hint of stretch.
Sustainability remains a key driver at Prosperity. All lightweights/shirtings are made with BCI Cotton and the use of post-consumer recycled cotton has become a mainstay.

    Naveena Denim

    Naveena-300 (1)

    Baykanlar

    BaykanlarMATCHPATCH1-300

  • Denim PV | AW16 Trends

    Denim PV | AW16 Trends

If we speak , belatedly (!) of two  important trend take aways from PV , it would be the variations in the existing categories of knit denim , super stretches . Both of these are not new looks and have been around for a while. However, these fabrics are undergoing transformation and refinement with better fabric characteristics . Buyers were looking for better fabric characteristics including strength, recovery , growth, compression and body shaping effects. For super stretches , buyers increasingly looked for higher recoveries and growth (less than 3%) parameters.  Colors Palette emerging for the AW’16 collection included –Green cast, Blacks washed down to greys, stay blacks and blues and bright shades of alternative blue color. Sustainability is getting bigger ,more encompassing and covering more aspects of denim production. Chemicals with the eco credentials eg Green Screen verified chemicals  from Garmon used by a number of companies, Vegetable dyes  (Vegan) dyed fabrics from Orta or the sustainable Khadi denims woven on handlooms from Arvind, Oxygene  fabrics from Calik which require lesser time to be treated, Recycled  post consumer wastes  from Artistic Milliners , Soorty and Artistic Fabrics  to  create sustainable fabrics. Garment processing also saw further development with Pizarro’s announcement of its patent pending technology of Sublimation printing on natural fiber fabrics including cotton , silk, wool and others adding another dimension to denim treatments. Also important was the mutations in the Selvedge category. Selvedges are no longer just nice rigid fabrics. They are also undergoing changes as companies experiment with different variations including stretches, finishes and coatings, weft colors and more.

The show also saw the 50th anniversary of Martelli – the washing power house from Italy ! It was quite interesting to see how Martelli greatly contributed to the growth of fashion industry in the last 50 years. From the 60s to still omnipresent tie and dyes to Tinto Bombers (bringing aged and silky effect) to Velvet effect (early coatings) a complete story of the important developments in fashion washing could be found at Martelli !

Now we come to developments and creations by individual mills and companies. We tried to cover as many companies as possible but due to limited time , we can bring developments from few companies only in this article . We are giving below the details from collections of some of the companies  (placed in alphabetical order).

    Artistic Fabric Mills, Pakistan

AFM has been playing around with technical upgradations in fabrics specially stretch fabrics . Director Mr Hasan Javed mentions that their  new super stretches have <3% growth and the focus was also on getting rigid look in comfort stretches. They also brought out  new looks like colorful injection slubs, tencel combinations in PFD, light weight shirts , leather coats , Stay blues, Scuba denims etc. Post consumer waste with recycled poly was also being used in their collection.

    Artistic Milliners, Pakistan

Focus on sustainability through their Back to life collection which is basically made using PCW (post consumer wastes) mostly in warp . Director Mr Omer Ahmed mentions that  company is the largest denim supplier of post consumer waste recycled fabrics. Most of the collection has less than 3% growth. AM focused on further refining its existing portfolio of fabrics with improved parameters, finishings etc. Besides, Back to life, their other product categories were:
S1 Lite -  refinement of the stretch fabrics with about 60% stretch , higher strengths and lighter fabrics for jeggings.
    Neoprene – 80% stretch fabrics.
A-Max– is powered with Invista Lycra beauty with about 40-45% stretch ability, less than 3% growth and the right amount of compression and body shaping as per Artistic Milliners .

    Arvind , India

One of the important parts of Arvind’s collection was the ‘Khadi Denim’. Khadi has been a part of cultural heritage of India where the fabrics were made by weavers on handlooms. The art started dying as it could not compete with the machine made fabrics . Arvind seeks to reinvigorate the eco sustainable art with their Khadi Denims. The fabric is Hand spun, Hand dyed and Hand woven .

Neo Cords – the indigo cords had more options with

Mutant Denim– knit denims with coatings – PU, pigment etc – and various kinds of finishes and with super stretches as well.

Calik came out with  innovative  fabrics –OXYGENE with 5Less : less energy, less water, less chemicals, less pollution and less time . The Oxygene fabrics can be treated more quickly (about 50–60% faster than with normal denim) and uses smaller quantities of chemicals, water and consumes less energy. “Our new Oxygene denims represent the future of denim,” says Hamit Yenici, Managing Director.
Besides they also had some cool wool denims, Maxima – Warp stretches,  Vintage looks (Blue Seeds) and denims with  Crailar fiber for a slubby , linen look denims and other qualities.

  • Denim by PV SS’16 Trends

    Denim by PV SS’16 Trends

Denim by PV held at Barcelona on 19th and 20th Nov had 2 busy days  with about  100 companies participating and over 4000 visitors coming from around the world. Though some felt that the May show was better, most of the exhibitors and visitors seemed happy with the show.
The exhibiting companies brought out their latest collections to the show for SS’16 season. Some trends emerged from these collection, one of the important one being the strong desire of denim companies to board the Athletic Wear band wagon and to beat Yoga pants and other competing products  at their home turf. Companies invested in technologies to bring out lighter denims with high stretchability – going upto 100% – with very good recoveries and low growths. Primarily to enable the denim to be used as a highly functional garment competing with all kinds of athletic wear.

Softness is in : Super soft fabrics were highly focused on as manufacturers tried to bring out various technologies in yarn, weaving and finishing to give that ultra soft touch to the consumer . The knit (jersey) denims are a very important part of the soft brigade as companies take the knits to next level with better stretches , comfort , function and distressability. To many, knit denims shall continue as a base staple fabric on which other value additions will be done.

Advanced Coatings : Many companies invested in advanced coatings to be done on lighter weight and high stretch fabrics and to give that shiny and pearly look to the fabric. These coatings are technology intensive as normally it is difficult to sustain them on high stretch fabrics.

Eco sustainability mantra continues with increased vigor. Crailar fiber is being used by a number of exhibitors as an upcoming eco sustainable alternative to cotton and to give that non-uniform linen like effect.

Selvedge denims seem to be getting more popular as middle rung brands also looking at them for their niche products. Most of the producers of selvedge seemed full and happy. Selvedges have been developed further to bring in more variations including blacks, stretches, dyed wefts and other combinations.

We now cover some of the companies we visited. It will not be possible to list all though we will try our best to cover as many.

    Cone – USA

Cone denim brings out ConeFlex – denims that stretch in four directions using stretch warp yarns and Cone’s patented SGene yarn technology in the weft.  Cone Touch introduces soft hand denims with added benefits of enhanced performance . The fabrics with Catch-Move-Release technology catches moisture move it away from body and releases for quick evaporation. Conegard fabrics are durable water repellant fabric engineered to add functionality and protection against elements. This is done without a coating process and does not interfere with cotton’s inherent capacity to breathe for natural comfort.

    • Everblue 57 represents the deep indigo color retention after repetitive washings, and also high  levels of color fastness.
    • Multi fiber fabric with REPREVE® fibers, Organic Cotton, Recycled Cotton and Hemp to create a eco-denim collection.
    •  J-Fit – 50% less forces needed to reach super stretch compared to commonly-used spandex/Lycra.  Generally, spandex fibers need 1.8 lbs to reach 20% stretch then increases significantly to 4.5 lbs for 50% stretch. With J-Fit, company claims,  one only need 1.9 lbs to get the same 50% stretch – means easier to stretch.
    • F2 denim collection is taking the trendy Jersey Denim(knit denims)  to the next level, with better fit and more functions.Adds a new fiber called Celliant to boost body energy level. The 13 minerals contained in Celliant absorb heat emitted by human body and covert into infrared light, which increases circulation, oxygen and blood flow, to deliver better rest and recovery.
    • 3D Denim, Dark/Dark color in warp and weft filling, plus Dark over-dye or coating, Prosperity’s new collection, 3D Denim, creates a statured deep dark color, and the distinctive high-low effect after wash.
    •  Feel It  Collection in this season is offering extremely soft hand feel. • Denim by PV – SS’15 | Part III

Further to our two previous posts on the SS’15 denim (part 1 and part 2) trends from  the Denim by PV , this is the third and the last one. As mentioned before, the interest in denim looked much higher at the show and also the visitations to the show were much higher than in May  . We all look forward to its first edition at Barcelona next year.

    Artistic Fabric Mills- Pakistan

AFM focused on super soft and super stretch fabrics for women – creating these fabrics with multiple combinations of fibers. Hasan Javed, Director , explaining the various super soft fabrics and other fabrics from AFM stable, says –

“Super soft, and super smooth hand feel is still very strong for the Spring/Summer season. We achieve this through different techniques. The most obvious one being the use of Tencel® and Modal® fibers from Lenzing in the warp. In addition to this, our new spinning expansion includes combers which allows us to combine thin combed warps with different wefts. New weft technology that we like to call “PLTC” combines four different fibers for a superior handle and excellent recovery at a more economical price. Combining constructions and using certain special warps allow us to use cotton wefts that provide linen looks. Moving away from the soft hand feel side, we have also introduced a new concept called “Mélange à trios”. This injects something novel into our PFD family; a Multi-fiber warp for double color or melange effect.”

Besides, they also  introduced fiber dyeing , Coolmax, transparent coatings, glitters etc.

    Crescent – Pakistan

Crescent came up with the waterless washing of denim garments through usage of chemicals which , according to Idrish Munshi , enables them to completely avoid the usage of stone and use only 1 litre of water per garmen to achieve the stone wash effect. They also came up with the ‘Jeans of Steel’ – made up of super strong dyneema fibers . The jeans, first created by a denim mill as per Crescent , are over 25% more stronger than the regular 100% cotton denim and much more suitable for motorcycle wear and other outer wear applications.

    Artistic Milliner – Pakistan

AM introduced  Selvedge denims for the women , besides their other products. Omer Ahmed, Director , says –

“We have 100% cotton, but what we have really worked on is to try to bring the contemporary technology to the selvedge area. For instance, selvedge is primarily for male fashion, but not so much for women. We have tried to bring the same for women – specially in stretch. We have taken the purist approach to these denim – to celebrate the purity of fabrics which has been there for over 100 years. We are trying to commercialize selvedge and make it more affordable. “

They also presented their performance range including Coolmax fabrics (for moisture management) , thermo cool , anti microbial , low friction fabrics etc. Artistic Milliners is also coming up with their Leeds certified factory at Pakistan shortly.

    US  Apparels – Pakistan

US apparel focused on some key concepts . Pure Indigo light or dark for a summer with  contrast. Green cast for fashion and vintage…  Grey to recall the great time of rock,&roll. Alternative fibers like modal, tencel, viscose, natural fibers for soft hand feel. Hemp and recycled yarn for sustainability. Print fashion image by laser and washed by ozone for water less. A trip through the memory starting from 80’s when the Indigo was more red up to the stage of Summer 15 . Eco and green still on front line  for a lifestyle contemporary  and live.

  • Denim by PV – SS’15 Trends | Part II

Subsequent to our first report on DPV SS’15 , here is our second , and a little delayed report, on the show . This report will mainly focus on the products and collections displayed by different companies who participated in the show. But before we start, lets see what the reputed denim master Adriano Goldschmied has to say.
(to watch all videos and presentations, you need to go online here)

    A Chat With Adriano Goldschmied

We had a small chat with denim Guru Adriano Goldschmied . On being asked where denim innovation was heading, he felt that the men’s denim is heading towards heavier weight and washing without stones. Women’s denim innovation was about bringing different fibres in the warp. He also felt that the low end of the market is improving more than the upper end of the market. See the video  below on the chat with Adriano Goldschmied.

    Bossa – Turkey

Brings out various concepts . Ultranero – the super dark black fabrics which are not supposed to fade even after repeated washes. Ultra Indigo – uses indigo x indigo ie indigo in weft also to bring out that high indigo concentrated colors .Dust bowl concept has fabrics inspired by colors of the soil – mainly 100% cottons. Make-up– has a number of different colors and different types of yarns used in the weft including the twisted elastomers. The IVY – League collection is targeted to create comfortable fabrics for men in rigid as well as stretch and are inspired by the IVY League of the USA. Concepts like “Indigo Bodies” with very high recoveries are targeted to the female audience. Besides stressing on the eco sustainability concept , Bossa brings out the 100% recycled denim products and ,as their marketing and R&D team claims, that through the process of recycling ,through chemical savings and resuse of carbon dioxide, usage of solar energy in their new project- the company will emit 30,000 tons less to the environment  .
Here below is a  presentation of the images from the Bossa SS’15 Collection.

    Orta Anadolu – Turkey

Orta presented their collections in different families . The performance family called the Hero Tech family including the loom tech, True tech , Dare denim etc. Then there are the blended and the stretch families. As per Ebru Ozaydin , the inspiration for the SS’15 was ‘Aqua Weaves ‘– ie the colors of the ocean. Starting from very dark to light blue – all present in the ocean. Within this family they are the Ocean Blues and the Deep Blues (I-core fabrics which are indigo coated fabrics). The light color areas also has ‘ Powder Blues’ – flat fabrics coated with summer colors with a waxy finish.
Orta has also partnered with Eric Hill – a person who is on a mission to visit 194 UN countries around the world. To support him in his journey, Orta offers Dare Denim, a durable new fabric that features environmentally friendly processes and high-tech fibers, tough durability, thermo-regulation, abrasion resistance, water repellent finishes and anti-bacterial properties. Here is a video of a chat with Ebru Ozaydin at Orta .

    Arvind Mills , India

Arvind brought out the NEO Denims – with an increased depth of the color which , according to Rajesh Gupta (Design head) “ are highly eco friendly due and enables to produce fabrics which start from high level of saturation and wash down very well. The user can get upto 20 washes starting from darkest color to the ice wash “. Mr Akhtar (CEO) in the video chat, given below, mentions that these are also very environmentally conscious products saving a large amount of water during the dyeing process. These fabrics were also combined with personalized writings which become apparent only after washing due to dark shades of the fabrics. SPICE denims from Arvind give the flexibility to the manufacturers to create their own colors in garment form. Apart from these , Arvind displayed their knit denims, jacquard denims, natural indigo dyed products and others.

Herebelow is a small video of a chat with  Mr. Aamir Akhtar

Also attached is a presentation of their collection images.

    arvind fnl copy copy

    Soorty – Pakistan

Soorty came up with different concepts like One Dip – the fabrics capturing the mood of summer by providing the flexibility to the users to create their own colors in garment stage. The extreme sports range are very high stretch and high recovery fabrics for the sportswear application. In the coating kitchen range, they presented a large range of coating techniques. The fabrics included coated tattoos. Denim Art, Gold Miner, Rider, Planets and platter to name few. Post garment coatings including sprays added further ‘color’ to the garments. The 3Sixty collection used a number of colored wefts with multiple combinations of fibers including modal. The Dance collection of super fine , super soft fabrics are targeted towards the usage in jeggings for women.
Mr Shahid Soorty (CEO), upbeat on the response and growth , says –

“Soorty derives its passion from the garments. We believe garments are the  key and this helps us to produce great fabrics. Going forward, we are going for expansion in flat fabrics, garments and denim fabrics. The garment expansion is coming up in Pakistan and also Bangladesh  where we are setting up a 40,000 garments per day Leeds certified factory. This would also help us to give maximum solution to the customer”.

    Calik – Turkey

Calik – Brings the ‘Botanical Sense Collection’ . Calik combined all its sustainable efforts under a “natural” collection, Botanical Sense. Botanical Sense takes inspiration and uses raw materials from the nature and makes it industrially applicable. The R&D center focuses on sustainable innovations in products, processes and technology and also collaborates with Turkish universities in developing and testing new ideas. For the launch, 20 new natural denims were introduced in Botanical Sense collection. The denims are made from organic cotton, BCI cotton, recycled cotton, linen, paper yarn, tencel and modal. All the dyestuff is either natural indigo or those approved by GOTS. Finishes are made with the recently introduced less water technology or natural ingredients. Overdyes are all made from natural ingredients. Calik claims that all the fabrics are certified.
They also brought an interesting collection of prints – inspired by the 500 year old art of traditional Japanese hand dyeing technology – “Shibori”- with the industrial application of printing on denims to achieve striking surfaces. Check the video below to understand more about “Shibori” from the Japanese master Hiroshi Murase.
I spoke to Hiroshi Murase to understand what the Shibori art is about . He explains it in details in the video below :

Third part of our PV report coming very soon !!

    denimsandjeans dhaka

  • Denim By PV | SS`15 Trends – Part I

Denim by PV  held at Paris , the last one before it shifts to Barcelona next season, was once again a great success and cool place to visit and meet the worldwide denim fraternity. The announcement to hold the next show at Barcelona took all by surprise ..

In this first report from the show , we come out with some highlights from the seasonal trend section. Other reports will follow soon:

Subdued tones and casts : Last 2 seasons were marked with a display of a large number of  yarn dyed and overdyed colors – from red to greens to violets and a number of pastel shades.  The collections for SS’15 have been more subtle and subdued  with colors going in to the core of the fabric than outside giving rise to different shades and casts  with subtle differences that highlight after continuous washes. Another continuous effort by the manufacturers is to move towards still darker and deeper tones. Combine that with a great flat finish and mild slubs and you have a great product to offer.
    colors and shades copy

Continuous effort is towards achieving a better and more comfortable jeans/jeggings for women as mills try to work on different fabrics and textures to bring out that most comfortable fabric with great recovery .  The innovative mills are continuously moving towards   creating the fabrics with that softer handle,  comfort and great recoveries .

Textures and weaves continue to get more important. We have, in the last 2 seasons seen the launch of woven knit denims by denim giant – Isko – and these fabrics continue to get more important with new structures and weaves and moving into lighter weights .

    structures copy

Another important theme was Eco Sustainability : While 3 years back , eco sustainability was treated more like a fad , with every passing season, the eco sustainability is getting more and more important . Mills, garment manufacturers, machine and chemical manufacturers are all creating new ways of getting that right product which is sustainable.  While on the one hand the mills , on demands from retailers, are creating collections from BCI Cotton, Organic  , on the other they are also trying to create fabrics with minimum usage of water in dyeing processes without sacrificing the fashion element .  Garment manufacturers are experimenting various eco friendly wash techniques including ice washing, lasers, ozone , special chemicals – all with a purpose to reduce water and

Prints are still a part of the collections – getting more and more subtle and merged with the fabric color , or with tones that dissolve at places with washes . The bold, in your face , prints were seen as receding .

    prints copy

Denim shirting with a twist of textures and special weaves was also the flavour of the season . Even companies who are not regular producers are getting into the bandwagon as making denim shirts becomes more creative process . Decorated with prints, overdyed, super dark coatings , blended yarn usage, weaves including herringbones and dobby knits.

In the “Clean” category, the company is combining different techniques such as mixing serigraphic and emboss down techniques together. By doing rinse wash, Deridesen tries to give little wash effect to leather labels.
Finally, with its “Sincity” concept, the company has decided to focus on chic and modern women! Therefore, foil print is used, and leather and jacron are covered with foil. Deridesen also uses horse and snake leather in many colours, with metal accessories! Many novelties to discover at the show!
