    Men V. Women Denim Exports

Vietnam is more into Men Denim and shares approx. 68-69% of the total export of Jeans,. However, the share has been increasing after every passing year and in 2019 it is expected to increase further. In the year 2018, the total export of women jeans was approx. 1.2 million pcs, against which, the export of Men’s Jeans was 2.7 million pcs. In 2019, the women jeans export fell  down to 9.9 lakhs  pcs whereas Men’s jeans increased by over 20% to 3.3. million pcs. So the market is moving more strongly towards the men’s jeans rather than the women’s.

The average price of  women’s jeans is more competitive than men’s . The average price of Women denim revolved around Euro 10-11/pc however the price of Men’s denim has been fluctuating around Euro 12 per piece.

On the whole against about 4 million jeans exported last year (including both men and women, this year is expected to be about 4.3 million or about 8.5% growth. Though this is not huge , we are expecting the real growth to come up next year when FTA with EU becomes operational and many of the capacities of garment factories that have been coming up go on stream.

On the whole, a huge growth for Vietnam is expected in the next couple of years as more and more Vietnamese and Chinese units become operational to take advantage of the FTAs.

Men’s jeans have actually shown a comparative fall in 2017 over the 2016 figures. The final figures are not expected to be over 33 million pieces in 2017 which will be about 10% less than previous year. Thus women jeans seem to be carrying the day for Turkey as fast fashion gives them the edge with brands like H&M , Zara etc sourcing continuously from them for high quality products and quick deliveries. The prices , however, seem to be weaker than 2015 .

Mauritius has been an important apparel exporter for a couple of decades specially the times when the tiny country had a few denim mills including those of Arvind , Novel etc and a large number of garment manufacturers and exporters who took the advantage of duty free access to EU . However, over a period of time, as labour costs rose and as it became more difficult to meet environmental norms in the island, many of the exporters moved away or closed. However, some large ones still remain and continue to make decent quantities of apparel including jeans for the Europe and other markets. We analyse in this report on what has happened over the last 3 years in terms of jeans exports to EU from this beautiful country.

[private_special]The imports of All Denim Apparel into EU from Mauritius , for 2014 was about million 2.45 pcs. The quantities in  2015 were almost similar at about   2.34 million pcs. However, the year 2016 saw a drop in exports to  1.91 million  pcs only. The Average price (Euro/pc ) for a pair of jeans exported in 2014 was 11.8 . However, we see that the prices rose considerably in the next two years to Euro 13.4 and 13.6 . A drop in export quantities was not surprising that the jump in prices was significant. However, it is also true that due to increasing costs, only very high value products can be made in Mauritius.

On the whole, we find that the exports of Jeans from Mauritius are on a way down and it seems no way that they may revive in the near future. The last companies remaining in the tiny country are fighting for survival against competition from countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc and it seems difficult they may make much progress ! But Mauritius will always remain a great tourism place !

Beleaguered Chinese jeans exporters now have to contend with the fact that Pakistan also has now overtaken them as the second largest exporter of jeans to EU and will likely take a lead in the coming years. Though Pakistan is much behind the EU in terms of exports of jeans compared to Bangladesh , it is likely to retain the second position for many years . To make matters worse for China, Turkey is also now closing in and will likely overtake it in coming 2 years.

From the updated data till August ‘16 , EU has imported 383 million jeans during the first eight months of 2016 and during this period , Pakistan has emerged as the second largest exporter exporting 20% more jeans to EU than China. Check out the following tables and statistics :

In women’s jeans, China still retains the second position , however with a small margin over Pakistan which may soon be overcome by Pakistan it seems. Also it is evident that Pakistan is getting more value added product sales than both Bangladesh and China  with a higher average price realization.

European Union has been in the news for the last few months due to several reason and one of the most prominent was the exit of UK from the EU . The BREXIT from European Union will have its own repercussions in long term. In 2015 , UK exported 5.82 million pcs of Men’s Jeans and 7.52 million pcs of Women’s jeans to EU however, after the exit we are not sure what direction the business will take. In a complete analysis, we can easily say that Bangladesh is the undisputed leader in both men’s and women’s jeans for exports to EU. China is a spent force and its market share is being taken over by its competitors.  Besides Bangladesh , only Turkey and Pakistan look strong enough to grow their shares. Other countries are more or less stagnant in their export figures.

The future of Turkey’s denim sector depends on its efforts in marketing and promotion. Production needs to be enhanced, and the country must make a stronger stand in global markets and participate in international events in order to maintain its position in the EU market. With its major fashion jeans brands such as Mavi, LTB, Colin’s, Rodi Mood, Loft and Collezione, Turkey should develop other brands and products that have the potential to conquer new markets in the US, EU, Africa and Asia. Export figures for the last six years show that not only does Turkey have the capacity, but also that that it has the capability to produce high added-value products.

    EU28 COUNTRIES

Let’s start our analysis with the imports of jeans into Spain from within EU.  In the diagrammatical explanation below, we can observe that Spain imported about 9.11 million pcs of jeans from countries within EU IN 2014 – highest among them being from Portugal. Other important countries were France, Italy, Netherland, and Denmark etc. However, it needs to remember that these jeans could have been the ones that are re-distributed after importing from other countries or a part of them having been produced in EU. It’s interesting to note that the total jeans imported from within EU have shown only marginal growth and that from 8.8748 million pcs to over 9.111 million pcs in the span of five years. One fact which is rather more interesting that , between the year 2013 and 2014 , the import went on diminishing side.

From the above analysis, it can be easily drawn that Portugal holds about 27% market share followed by France with about 22%  share from among the EU countries from which Spain imports denim jeans. . Italy and the Netherland are the two other countries which are making shipments to Spain in good quantities. One point to remember is that it is not really certain whether the EU countries which are exporting to Spain are manufacturing such jeans in their own country or not. They might be also importing these jeans from other countries and re-exporting to Spain. Eg Netherlands is home to many large retailers and brands which might be importing jeans from their suppliers around the world and re-routing these jeans to their own sales channels, stores in Spain.
The volume of jeans , however , from EU countries remains more or less stable around 10 million pcs in the period 2010-14.

The table and the  graph below shows the import prices of jeans from EU countries. Italian exports are the most expensive and, more often than not, these would be Made It Italy jeans. If we look at the quantities imported from 2010 to 2014 from EU countries, it’s very apparent that there is only a marginal growth in the quantities however, if we look at the figures of World, it’s quite surprising that in the year 2010 and 2011 , there was an adverse growth ,however after that , the quantities have been gone up from 69.297 millions to 86.067 million pcs which is very encouraging for the denim industry.

    TOTAL CONSUMPTION

The total consumption of jeans in Spanish Market can be calculated with the table below.

The first two columns show the exports of jeans to rest of the world and to EU countries. From the below figures, it can be derived that total exports in 2014 were 52.3447 million pcs as compared against 31.7821 million pcs in 2010. Even after the hit of recession worldwide, Spain has shown very surprising export values.

Imports value were surprisingly higher as compared to export value. The total imports were 95.1784 million pcs in 2014 and in the year 2010 , it was 79.9648 million pcs only. It has been assumed that there was negligible production of jeans in Spain during this period.

    PER CAPITA CONSUMPTIONS

The per capita consumption of jeans in Spain can be calculated below

    2010

Total Net Consumptions 48.182 Million Pcs
    Total Populations 47.02 Million

Per Capita Consumptions 1.02 Jeans Per Person/P.A

    2014

    Total Net Consumptions 42.8337Million Pcs
    Total Populations 46.77 Million

Per Capita Consumptions 0.915 Jeans Per Person/P.A

From the above analysis, it can be drawn that from the year 2010 to 2014, the per capita consumption has slightly decreased  from 1.02 Jeans per person per annum to 0.915 Jeans per person per annum. Also the population of Spain in 2014 is lower than that in 2010. Both taken together, it would mean that the absolute consumption has been much lower. In fact , against 48 million pcs of jeans consumed in 2010, only about 43 million pcs have been consumed in 2014 showing once again that the European markets are more or less saturated for consumption of jeans.

    TOTAL IMPORTS

The total imports of jeans into French Market can be now summarized up in the table below with shipments coming from both within EU and from outside. The share of EU in the French market is about 32.26% and 67.74% comes from rest of the world in 2014. If we look at the quantities imported from 2010 to 2014 from EU countries, it’s very apparent that there is only a marginal growth in the quantities while if we look at the figures of World, it’s quite evident that it’s on increasing trend.

    TOTAL CONSUMPTION

The total consumption of jeans in French Market can be calculated with the table below. The first two columns show the exports of jeans to rest of the world and to EU countries. From the below figures , it can be easily obtained that except the year 2012 and 2013 , rest years have shown the increasing trend in export as well as import . The net consumption in 2010 was 43.52 million pcs while it has been decreased to 38.86 million pcs in 2013 but later on in 2014 the net consumption has reached to the level of 46.42 million pcs . This is a little less than 7% increase over 5 years. Can be hardly commendable, but is still ok when we consider how the economies are moving.

    PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION

The per capita consumption of jeans in French Republic can be calculated below:

    2010

Total net consumption        :            43.52 million pcs

    Total population                    :           65.02 million

Per capita consumption      :           0.67 jeans per person/P.A

    2014

Total net consumption         :           46.42 million pcs

    Total population                    :           67.64 million

Per capita consumption      :           0.69 jeans per person/p.a

From the above analysis, it can be drawn that from the year 2010 to 2014, the per capita consumption has been slightly increased from 0.67 Jeans per person per annum to 0.69 Jeans per person per annum – a figure which is negligible and does not encourage huge optimism. Also the per capita consumption is much lower than many other nations like UK , Germany , Benelux etc. Not the greatest market, but still has a decent consumption of about 45 million pcs.

  • Denim Imports In Germany : 2010-2014

Denim Imports In Germany : 2010-2014

germany denim imports Germany is the biggest market of jeans in Europe constituting about 30% of the total imports of jeans. It consumes a large quantity of value jeans and a decent quantity of premium jeans as well.

The German economy is powered by exports. Its current-account balance (the difference between the money it receives from the outside world and what it spends abroad) is one of the world’s largest, at 7% of GDP. It is an open economy: its ratio of exports to GDP is double China’s. About 6% of German exports go to China, especially what are  "capital" goods such as heavy machinery. Germany has also been hit by slow growth in the 17 other euro-zone countries, where it sends 40% of its exports. Also issues with Russia are affecting its capital goods export to that country . Though the unemployment level is still low at about 5% , the country needs to worry about its other aspects as its costs of manufacturing are increasing. The Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 resulted in focus being shifted away from the nuclear energy – due to which its energy prices are increasing – and causing shifting of some manufacturing away from Germany.

But still Germany is the country that powers the Eurozone. Its performance is an indicator of how the zone performs. We will , in this report, see how the country is performing in terms of imports of jeans over the last 5 years from 2010 to 2014. We will see:

    1. The quantity of jeans imported from the world during this period .

    2. The value and prices of such jeans imported.

    3. Breakup of these imports in terms of men’s and women’s jeans. Import market size in terms of men’s and women’s jeans component.

    3. The imports compared from within and outside EU in terms of quantities , prices , shares etc.

    4. The main gainers and losers from 2010 to  2014 for exports of jeans to Germany. Top exporting countries and their share

    5. Eight tables showing the supporting  figures and their analysis.

      2010 % share 2014 % share
    Total Jeans from outside EU 135 80% 114 70%
    Total Jeans from within EU 34 20% 47 30%
    Total imports 169   161

The above 4 tables are quite interesting. Table 1 shows the imports of jeans into Germany from outside EU since 2010. We will notice that the year 2010 was the year with highest imports into Germany from outside EU. With about 135 million pcs imported into Germany in 2010 , the imports in 2014 were 15% lesser at about 114 million pcs. The major fall in imports happened in 2012 when the European economies suffered a setback and since then the recovery has been poor or hardly any. We also note that the ratio of imports of jeans is highly in favor of Men’s jeans with about 70% of jeans being men’s . It clearly shows that Germany is male dominated market when it comes to jeans imports.

But Germany does not only import jeans coming from outside EU. A good quantity is also imported into Germany from within the EU countries. Some of these countries like Italy, Portugal , Spain, Bulgaria and others are also manufacturers of jeans while other countries are importers themselves. We see from tables 3 and 4 that the imports from within EU countries has been increasing for Germany. From about 34 million pcs imported in 2010 , the imports are about 47 million pcs in 2014. This is quite a jump of about 33% . This is also indicative of influence of fast fashion and near sourcing getting more important. Also this is corroborated by the fact that about 50% of such jeans imported are women’s as against 30% in case of those imported from outside EU.

The total imports of jeans , when we consider both outside and within EU imports, we find that the figures of 2010 and 2014 and not quite apart besides a small decrease. In 2010 about 169 million pcs were imported and in 2014 about 161 million pcs were imported. But the major change has been in the % of share of within EU imports which have gone up from 20% of total imports to 30% of total imports. This is a significant direction from the country with the largest consumption in Europe. And it looks that this direction may continue for some time .

Now lets look at the prices of imports below:

6.Prices of imports from outside EU (euro/pc)

      2010 2011 2012 2013 2014
    Men’s Jeans 7.56 8.12 8.73 8.93 8.84
    Women’s Jeans 6.61 6.56 7.79 8.03 7.97

7.Prices of imports from within EU (euro/pc)

      2010 2011 2012 2013 2014
    Men’s Jeans 18.2 17.7 18.2 18.3 17.7
    Women’s Jeans 16.7 15.7 14.6 14.9 14.8

The prices of imports of jeans from outside EU is hovering around Euro 8.5-9.0 per pc for men’s jeans and about 8 Euro for women’s jeans. While the prices from within EU are significantly higher at about 18 Euro and 15 Euro respectively. The prices from within EU are almost double that of the imports from outside. And the fact that still the imports are increasing from EU is again and indication of changing consumer preferences .

8.Countrywise share in Outside EU Imports

      2010
    (mill. pcs)
    2014
    (mill.pcs)
    % share in 2010 % share in 2014
    Bangladesh 29 36 21% 32%
    China 68 26 50% 23%
    Pakistan 11 20 8% 18%
    Turkey 11 12 8% 11%
    Tunisia 4 4 3% 4%
    Indonesia 2 2 1% 2%
    Others 9 14 7% 12%
    Total ( in million pcs) 135 114

Now we come to the major exporters of denim jeans to Germany since 2010 . When we look at 2010 we find that China had almost 50% share of the entire market and it was a huge number with about 68 million pcs. However, year 2014 saw its share drop to 23% and that too at reduced import quantities. Thus its quantities of exports fell to about 26 million pcs which is a significant drop of over 60% !!. The loss in China’s share was the gain for other major exporting countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan. Bangladesh increased its volume by about 25% to 36 million pcs and Pakistan almost doubled its volume to 20 million pcs. Other countries like Turkey , Tunisia, Indonesia etc were almost at similar levels of absolute exports but increased their relative shares of a reduced market. Thus it is clear that China’s loss has been the benefit for most other exporting countries.

  • EU Exports Of Denim Fabrics 2010- 2011

Eu Denim Exports EU denim production capacity has been reducing constantly and due to increased costs of production and the resultant shifts of productions to Asia .
The shifting of denim fabric production to Asia has also been increasingly supported by increased apparel production in Asian and other countries. As a result EU denim mills have to increasingly ship their fabrics overseas for conversion- which in any case they were doing to countries like Tunisia and Morocco. More countries have been added to this list and the fabrics are now being shipped across Asia .

Lets have a look at the places where denim mills in EU are shipping their fabrics in 2010 and 2011 . Basically we will see :

    a) The countries where the major shipments are being made.
b)The quantities shipped to these countries .It gives an idea as to which countries are importing more of EU fabrics.
c)The value and average prices of these fabrics.
d)Comparison of all the above for both the years 2010 and 2011
e)Countries covered are Tunisia, Morocco, USA, Turkey, India, Egypt , China and Hong Kong.
f)Total EU export during this period of 2 years.

As we can see that the highest shipments of EU have been to Tunisia and Morocco. However, upcoming and increased shipments can be seen to India , and USA also. But it is also noteworthy that the total shipments sent from EU have been falling and have reduced significantly in 2011 to the tune of about 20% indicating the reduced competitiveness of the area in exports.

  • EU Imports Of Jeans In 2011 Has Actually Increased!!

eu denim imports 2010 - 2011The US imports of denim have been a cause for concern this year. The fall in imports   has been consistently rising and almost touching a negative growth of 14.3% from Jan to Sept  compared to similar period in 2010.
The current market  reports coming from EU are not very encouraging .Many  retailers are believed to be holding their purchases or delaying them. In fact , one of the major retailer from EU  is believed to have postponed a major part of a 20million pcs order .. The situation does not look so good.

But when we look at the figures of imports of denim apparel from Jan to July 2011 as compared to the similar period in 2010, we find a totally different situation. The imports of jeans into EU has actually increased by  5% over the same period in 2010.

The figures are quite inspiring and confusing at the same moment. They do not reflect the current economic turmoil that Europe is going through. The price increase , though seems justified as the impact of cotton price increases of last year have continued to be felt this year at the retail level.  Many countries have increased their exports with China having increased about 3% and

However, what happens in the next few months shall be very important and indicative for the industry . The reports coming from major exporting(to EU) countries including  Bangadesh , China, Pakistan etc have not been very good. Most of the apparel exporters have indicated that they are short of orders or have requests from the buyers to postpone the orders to next year. The psychological impact of developments in Italy , and other EU countries is perhaps taking a toll with the retailers and many of them not wanting to take a risk in this situation.
