  • Vicunha AW-15/16 Denim Collection

Vicunha, the famous denim group from Brazil  with production  distributed among five manufacturing facilities in Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina , brings out their AW15/16 denim collection. The collection has some interesting concepts including brilliant coatings (Carbolumen), denim for athletic purposes and super power stretches. We bring here a summary of their main concepts.

    SUPER POWER STRETCH

Shirt weights, satin weaves, chambrays as well as 4×1, 3×1 and 2×1 weaves are part of the SUPER POWER STRETCH program that became one of the basis segments with a fabric elasticity of up to 67%.  The weights are mainly   between 7 and 10 oz. Alongside colors and washes, optics and structure play the leading role: “high density denims” with a clean look and a soft and comfortable feeling prevail which, according to Vicunha, are important menswear as well. Consequently, the highlights include light denim qualities produced from cotton or mixtures of Tencel for blue denim shirts, as well as in women’s fashion for jumpsuits, overalls and skirts. Thomas Dislich , marketing Director says :

“In general, there is a strong trend towards fine, combed yarns, comfort yarns and polyamide: a soft, casual feeling is the most important issue. Thus, the SUPER POWER STRETCH remains a front-runner, not only for slim shapes, but also to guarantee the authenticity of form and best wearing comfort.”

    ATHLETIC DENIM

VICUNHA presents its ATHLETIC DENIM for the autumn/winter 2015/16  with an elastic stretch content of 76% for maximum comfort, elasticity and fit. It is a mixture of urban denim look on the outside and workout outfit feeling on the inside.

    CARBOLUMEN

Carbolumen is a finishing highlight which presents highly brilliant coatings, natural leather looks and qualities with a cool touch and recognizable denim identity thanks to progressive technologies. Besides brilliance, structure and high quality, the primary focus is on comfort,  fit and breathability. A sophisticated softening treatment ensures succinct effects and a  contrast of glossy and matt surfaces.

    ECO-D

ECO D are authentic colored jeans line made of warp dyed yarn and the fabric consists of 100% recycled polyester obtained from recycled PET bottles and 100% BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton. Each meter of fabric uses about 3 plastic bottles . Even for the dyeing process the normal water consumption is  reduced by approximately 80%, as claimed by the company- besides reusing about 70% of the remaining small amount of water.

    METALLIC GLAM

Glamour stays! Shine and glitter effects created through micro-particles applied on the fabric surface ensure exciting metallic looks. In addition to the characteristic black and silver, this season Metallic also strikes with strong colors such as royal blue and grass green. About 100 washes are guaranteed by the company for the high resistance and durability of the product.

    TRANSFORMING DENIM

TRANSFORMING DENIM “turns“ blue denim into a  piece of art, which is mixed up with bright colors. The shades of color depend on the grade of chemical treatment, for instance, by the use of permanganate spray during the washing process. The creative diversity due to the various color shadings – from soft to vivid – allows a wide range of options for the production of unique, exclusive pieces.

From the above table we see that Canada enjoys about 37% share of all the women jeans exported from US. Mexico, Belgium, Italy and UK are distant second markets with about 6-9% share of the women’s jeans. There is wide fluctuation within some markets when we see the average prices for 2012 and 2013. Markets like Germany ,take very small quantity of women jeans, tend to fluctuate in the average prices highly within 2 years going from $25 in 2012 to about $49 in 2013. This is also indicative effect of smaller quantity orders going in to markets like these. However bigger markets like Canada give a more consistent price ($26.8 in 2012 and $23.5 in 2013). The market for women jeans from US is small and niche and mainly includes developed countries.

  • EU Revokes 26% Duty on Women Jeans Imports From US

After imposing a retaliatory duty of 26% additional duty on women’s jeans to be imported from US last year taking the total duty to 38% on such imports, EU decided to revoke the same few days back and bring the duty levels to 12.5%.

This decrease of import tax wil great news for  the Californian garment industry, which  produces roughly 75 percent of premium made in the US denim. The tariff hike was previously introduced in retaliation for the Byrd Amendment (a law which allowed the US to impose additional duties on undervalued imports), despite the World Trade Organization ruling against it in 2002. The duties previously collected are still being handed out as precondition legal procedures are completed.

In response the WTO has allowed each country to be affected to raise its tariff on items imported from the US in direct relation to the amount of AD or CV duties on the items from said country which were distributed over the previous year. This led EU to announce additional duties of 26% on the women’s denim jeans as a retaliation.

Since the adding premium womens denim to the list back in 2013, the distribution amount for 2013 has reduced by nearly 50 percent, which led the EU to lower its additional tariffs on women’s jeans and other affected items. However , EU still has the option to impose  26 percent tariff next year.
Various exporting companies from US have been hiring legal firms to claim refunds on various grounds including the arguments that “jeans do not fall under the definition of denim!!”.

Did the duties made an impact on imports of women jeans into EU?

It would be interesting to understand whether the imposition of duties affected the imports of women jeans into EU from US. Absolutely YES!!

The imports in 2013 fell by over 31% as compared to those in 2012. This was a drastic fall and should hve affected the Californian jeans industry in not a small way. Lets take a look at the chart below to understand the actual figures of imports in 2012 and 2013 including volumes, prices , values etc.

As we can see from the above table the actual shipments fell br 31% clearly showing the impact of duties. It is also interesting to see that the prices did not fall and in fact increased marginally indicating the preference of US exporters not to reduce their prices in response to duty imposition.

  • EU Jeans Imports Increase 8.3% In 2013

Denim Imports in EU27 countries showed a sharp increase of over 8% in 2013 as compared to same period in 2012. This is one of the sharpest increase in the recent years and augurs well for the industry . This increase is likely to reflect in the year 2014 as well. Many important exporting countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan showed their significant improvement in their volumes while some of the countries like China had to suffer reductions. The average price of jeans imports , however, reduced by

In this report we will cover  a number of tables including the following :

    • The total volumes of  denim apparel imported into EU in 2013 , their average prices and values.
    • Change in Men’s jeans imported in this period with their average prices, volumes etc.

    • Specific details on some important countries export figures.

    [private_special]

First of all lets look at the figures of total import of jeans into EU in 2013 as compared to 2012. From the figures below we can see that there is a significant increase of about 8.3% in 2013 from 454 million pieces to 492 million pcs. The value of these imports is about Euro 3.68 billion in 2013 as compared to  Euro 3.53 billion in 2012. This also reflects a comparative reduction in average prices from Euro 7.78 to Euro 7.48.  The reason for this increase could be more clear as we look at more data.

    Bangladesh

Lets look at one of the most imp exporting country ie Bangladesh.  This country had one of the most significant increase in exports of about 20% . This increase is even more significant when we consider that Bangladesh had been going through a turmoil in 2013 and was politically disturbed in 2013. It still increased its export volumes –though the average export  price from Bangladesh  reduced by about 6%. This also affected and brought down the average price of  jeans imported into EU .

    Pakistan

Pakistan is a country getting more and more important as a jeans exporting hub for EU. With the recent duty free access to Pakistan, 2014 will see a huge surge in imports of jeans from Pakistan. However, what is surprising is that even in 2013 when Pakistan did not have this benefit, the increase in volumes is over 23% !! . This shows the inherent strength of Pakistan as an exporter of denim to EU.

Turkey is another important exporting country for EU. It has been a large exporter since last many years. Though Turkey is getting more and more expensive (their average prices are more than double that of Pakistan, BD or China)  , still it retains the benefit of high fashion and  quick turnaround for retailers and buyers in EU and hence does not lose market share to other countries easily. Their volumes and prices remain more or less same in 2013.

A small country to look at would be Mauritius . Mauritius had been regularly losing its business to other countries over the last few years. However, during 2013 there has been a decent increase in its volumes – propelled by overall increase in consumption in Mauritius . This augurs well for the country . According to discussions with some exporters from Mauritius , the reason for this increase has been diversion of orders from some of the exporting countries like Bangladesh.

From the above analysis and figures , it is clear that EU is consuming more and more denim inspite of  its economy not being at the best. We can hope this year to be giving a further filip to the denim industry.

  • Mavi Spring Summer 2014 Mens Lookbook

Double denim attire was an anathema a few years back after having been popular in the late 90s.  Wearing denim on denim was considered a sacrilege in fashion circles till very recently. But now most denim brands seem to be focusing on pairing denim tops (jackets, shirts) with jeans to bring out that cool look for the fashionistas. The Mavi SS’14 lookbook is again pointing in this direction . Printed denim shirts, short jackets , light washed shirts have been paired with similar  washed jeans . The pairing is not necessarily in contrasting colors as normally seen with double denim attires. Light and bleached out washes have been used extensively. Keep looking for the cool combinations from Mavi.

  • Calvin Klein SS’ 14 Men’s Lookbook

Calvin Klein , in their SS’14 collection for men, brings out some cool double denim looks pairing contrasting washes and interesting hues of denim s in tops and bottoms to bring that quintessential all denim look for males. The pairing of double denims is well thought of and does not look overwhelming. Skinny fit seems to be the preferred style for jeans while crackle and  pigment washed looks  are being used for the jackets. Ice washes , grey colors are all too prominent in the jeans and cannot be missed.

  • Replay SS’ 14 Men’s Denim Lookbook

The coming Spring Summer 2014 denim collection of Replay has lots of ripped and destroyed shirts and jackets. They use some eye catching styles and details and styles including slouchier jeans,  heavy sprays and bleaches, some patchwork , creating two tones using multiple fabrics and very contrasting washes on the upper and lower parts of the jeans. Subdued patterns in prints are visible mainly in the shirts and double , triple denims combinations are created using combinations of indigo casts and colors, prints etc and can be very pleasing for consumers (and denim suppliers!). Replay men’s summer lookbook is about good old work wear inspired outfits. Grunge inspiration is visible on the collection , but distressing on jeans seems to be missing. The styles are casual and models look at ease – giving an original appearance. Colors are conspicuous by their absence except for one nice red color jeans.
