  • A Talk With Junaid Javed Of SM Group Pakistan

A Talk With Junaid Javed Of SM Group Pakistan

SM Group is one of the well known Pakistani textile groups . With a history of over 60 years, the group is well entrenched in global markets and now seeks to explore the Japan market through our Denimsandjeans Japan show in March’24 . We interacted with their Executive Chariman Mr. Junaid Javed . He has an MBA degree from a reputed university in Pakistan and have been leading the group for more than 20 years now. Under his leadership the group has progressed from trading concern to manufacturing facility. SM group has seen immense growth under his leadership and continue to explore new investment avenues.

SM group has a long history which goes back over 60 years. Can you elaborate how the group developed and what is the current structure of the group?

SM group has been in business for more than 60 years now. We started small at retail level, went to wholesale, trading and to manufacturing over these years. We have multiple export trophies in our belt and have been largest flannel exporters from Pakistan in our early days. We ventured into denim fabric production when it was a new avenue for investors in Pakistan and have never looked back ever since. It is a family owned company and has a mix of corporate and traditional hierarchy. The first generation laid the foundation of the group and We as the second generation namely Mr. Asif Merchant and myself Junaid Javed has taken reigns into our hands now and are all geared up to take SMD to next level.

You are using some ground breaking technologies like INDICAN and others which contribute to your sustainability targets . Can you elaborate on more of these

Everyone is looking for sustainable solutions and thus the whole industry is coming up with very interesting solutions. It’s an honest effort by most of the industrialists to meet retail and brand requirement of sustainability, which eventually is adding great value to innovation and up gradation of the overall sustainable efforts. SMD has covered the material side of sustainability and traceability and realised long back that process optimisation is the only way forward if you want real change. Therefore, as an answer to our process optimisation efforts we came up with INDICAN. It’s a sustainable dyeing and finishing route which is third party SGS certified. It is a way to reduce 80% less water in finishing and dyeing, consumes way less dyes and leaves almost less than 1% less residual dye in the dye bath. Apart from IndiCan we do have salt free dyeing also which again has a huge impact in environment. We are continuously striving towards process innovation where chemical, dye and water usage can be minimised. With IndiCan the consumer will have a certification and a swing tag to increase the retail value.

What special collection you are bringing to the Denimsandjeans Japan show on March 24 . Do you think that the Japanese market has some very special needs and which of your products can address that

This is going to be a great combination with Japanese Heritcage fashion and SMD innovation. We are working on few capsules which will have performance , innovation and aesthetics at it’s core however we are keen to keep the heritage and retro theme at its heart. We are playing with some fibers and making sure not to loose the Japanese denim identity while making our fabrics and garments. Our fabrics and garments will have elements of old school Japanese denim at the same time will keep the fabrics and garments trendy.

As you mentioned that you use a number of fibers for high performance, sustainability etc. What are your most favourite ones and why

We have a thing for using and promoting sustainable fibers in our collection. We have been using different fibers through our product lifetime and have used multiple synthetic sustainable and natural fibers. These days we are focusing on NAIA by Eastman corp which to us has a great intrinsic value and addresses sustainable challenges. Also it is affordable fiber which has compostable and biodegradable properties which very few fibers have at the moment. We are going to bring great collection to Japan which will also cover these fibers and will be available for an exhibit. I am sure it’s going to create waves and we are early adopters looking to seek early movers advantage.

The markets have been difficult for the last one year . How has SM denim adjusted themselves to face the new challenges and be prepared for the future.

Indeed the market has been acting odd for last few months. We realised this early on and have worked on our products and compatibility. We have added several light weight fabrics, PFD and PFGD fabrics to our collection so keep the product line trendy and in variety. We are working with brand and garment factories closely to keep the competitiveness in market and this is what have sailed us through. We do have some strategic partnerships in place and you will hear about it in coming days and its going to be really interesting. Also we have increased our presence internationally with global offices and international exhibitions like Denimsandjeans, Kingpins NY, Kingpins Amsterdam, Colombiatex, Bangladesh Denim expo, Intertextile Shanghai and Denim by PV. This is to keep touch points with clients and its working fine at the moment.

Mr. Junaid Javed is executive chairman of SM Group and manages its multiple businesses. He has an MBA degree from a reputed university in Pakistan and have been leading the group for more than 20 years now. Under his leadership the group has progressed from trading concern to manufacturing facility. SM group has seen immense growth under his leadership and continue to explore new investment avenues.

  • A Talk With Imtiaz Ishaq From Kassim Denim

A Talk With Imtiaz Ishaq From Kassim Denim

Kassim is one of the most well known Pakistan denim company and respected globally for its innovative developments. The company brought out denims in 1991 and since then it has been a great growth journey for the group – going from places to places . We spoke to the Marketing Director Mr Imtiaz Ishaq regarding their philosophy , journey , developments and more.

Kassim is one of the most innovative denim companies. What drives the company?

Our philosophy is to make denim using a simple age old concept of treating others as you wish to be treated. Keeping things minimal, our ethical principles are interwoven into our denim. We aim

to care for all the artisans involved in making our denims & to produce the most luxurious and best fitting jeans, while protecting the earth and loving its people & try to get close to green world every day.

With the changing regulations in different countries, bringing sustainable products to the market becomes a priority for brands. How are you helping the brands for the same.?

We believe sustainability should not be limited to some products, infact it’s our foremost responsibility to make every product sustainable.
And, to do so, we need to adopt sustainability as a habit, as a mission, as a part of every step which we take towards introducing
the new innovations & this is the only way forward

Firstly we have equipped our facility with all the machines, chemical fibers and other raw material for sustainable production for the brands & secondly we made sure flexibility of our production lines and supply chain to cater the needs of different brands.

Denim is increasingly becoming a performance fabric. What do you think about the same thing?

Denim is becoming more dynamic as consumer needs change and Millennials, Gen Z Swing Fashion Industry As millennial became a bigger consumer force, demand for Gen Z clothing is inevitable ….accordingly we have introduced our “Ethleisure Series”, simply a multifunction denim that can use as formal wear & at the same time give you athletic freedom & weather friendly properties.
What are the 3 key developments by Kassim in the current year . Do you believe these are seasonal or long term?

We’re always believe in long term developments but at the same time following the market requirement and trends.

    • We are striving to cover most of our production capacity with other than Virgin cotton that will include recycle or organic, Zero Cotton Denim, Biodegradable denim & so on.
    • As we know the world is quickly changing and challenging the denim industry to quickly adapt to it, we have recently join hands with Invista and developed series of articles by using Lycra-Adaptive so Denim consumer can have unparalleled wearing experience with best fits that will provide shaping and compression, a second skin effect.
    • We believe that Every Fade Has A Story. By partnering with Cleankore and Archroma, Kassim now has a new vintage looking black garment that is not only fully sustainable but also effective in saving water, chemicals, energy and production time. According to Archroma’s in-house impact calculator One Way, this new solution eliminates the need for potassium permanganate spray, thus avoiding the yellow cast that the chemicals can give on black denims. Products can also be laser-finished, and thus achieve low EIM scores, using Jeanologia’s rating system

Pakistan has been a very important player in the global denim market. Do you foresee its influence increasing in the coming year?

Yes, absolutely! Pakistani industries have been playing a vital role in global denim market & the reason for our success is capacity and capability. We are equipped with all necessary tools like latest machines and raw material and have enough capacity to cater the requirement of market. Although, market is currently unstable due to political tensions & recession in world but we are hoping that once the world will be back on track again, Pakistani industries will grow further & show their importance on the  world map.

Your growth plans for 2023 ?

Agility of the supply chain remains one of the key driving force in our continuous expansion so in order to become fully captive in yarn, we have established a state of the art spinning unit which will ensure the supply of premium and value added yarns in least possible time & we also have further expansion plans of our spinning unit for 2023.

Further as a part of our energy & emission management strategy, we have installed state of the art solar energy system at our facility to eliminate fuel dependency. It is currently generating 3.2 megawatt of green energy & our aim is to increase it further in future until our whole manufacturing facility switches on solar power which will help us to significantly reduce the carbon footprint.

Another project of water recycling is in line and expected to complete by 2023 and after its completion we will able to make 50% of our waste water reusable.

Denim Clothing Company – An Interview with Mr. Munaf Hussain

Covid times has brought out great challenges to the global denim industry in recent months. It has forced all of us to think about how we can adapt in the new environment and adjust to the new normal . We have been speaking to some of the important companies around the world on how they adapted their work procedures and processes to ensure minimal impact.

Denim Clothing Company is a well known and reputed vertically integrated denim company from Pakistan and has been serving global clients through their fabric and garment divisions . It currently operates four factory units and employs about 8,500 people. They have been known for their fast innovations and product launches and adaptability with a focus on sustainability . Given below are excerpts from the interview we had with him.

How is Denim Clothing Company (DCC) catering to its customer base in the current situation when travel is not possible. Are you able to reach out to them effectively?

The pandemic and ensuing lockdowns have enabled DCC to utilise our digital platforms more effectively. We have managed to push toward and explore new venues for digital communication to achieve an interactive experience with our customer base. Our marketing department is constantly meeting customers via video calling software, and we have switched digital product presentations.

Additionally, we have a network of our foreign offices / showrooms globally, all of whom are invested more than ever in facilitating our clients where physical meetings are unavoidable and filling up any communication constraints. Our new collections are available at our showrooms and can be delivered to customers in a very short time span. Again, this is very feasible for both ourselves and customers – delivery times are drastically reduced since the products and samples are easily accessible.

Your steps are in the right direction. Digitalization is the new keyword for business today. What further steps have you taken to take your products digital and bring them to your customers?

We have managed to very quickly adapt and implement a digital structure for communications – our showrooms both at the factory and globally are fully equipped to carry out digital presentations, whether live or as pictorials, with the latest software and technology. There are dedicated conference rooms for both individual and team video conferencing), again employing up to date tech setup for video calling.

DCC has switched to creating E-catalogues of all our new collections, with high resolution images and detailed product sheets. In this way, customers can simply browse through the information at their convenience and then the process can be facilitated via video conferencing. For more detailed product perusal and information, samples are readily available at all our showrooms and can be dispatched when needed.

You have been putting in efforts for sustainability for a long time. What are the major steps you have taken in this direction and what have been the results?

All our present and future developments are visualized with a sustainability focus in mind. We have placed immense efforts in this arena and taken some major steps across the value processing chain.

Since the establishment of our factory, we have proceeded to install a WasteWater Treatment Plant, and we are mindful of maintaining and updating the plant according to the latest health and safety advisories. Currently, we recycle about 50% of our processed water and reutilize it, thus conserving this precious resource.

We take great importance in utilizing Recycled Content Fabrics as well as Organic Fabrics along with Sustainable Dyeing methods to ensure our commitment to a circular economy.

In terms of operations, our latest feat is securing a Leed Gold Certification for our production facility, which reaffirms our commitment to being a ‘Green Factory’.

Our garment washing treatments consistently employ the latest sustainable methods, low impact washes via a state of the art Jeanologia E-flow, EIM and Laser systems, PP Less washes, anti-microbial treatment (this has taken on new meaning and importance with the pandemic onset). Our laundry setup is a ZHDC complaint, and strictly follows guidelines with respect to chemicals which are harmful towards the environment.

In terms of tangible achievements, DCC has enabled 50% recycling of all water used within the production process. Additionally, to reaffirm the reduction of contamination and dangerous chemical usage, we have minimized our consumption of stones in the laundry process.

Our aim is to move steadily towards a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system and doing our part in reducing the textile industries’ carbon footprint. In this respect we continuously implement and improve the EMS system to improve our working processes. Also to watch out for is our plan to introduce the capability for an Ozone Bleaching System, which is being finalized through our research and development team.

It we look at the above 2 graphs, we find that Indian exports fell down maximum in 2016 and have recovered in 2017 – though they are still less than what they were in 2014. Besides, India was always a more expensive sourcing location but in the year 2017, Pakistan became costlier than India in terms of average price. This also reflects that Pakistan is fast moving up the value chain and selling more quantity at better prices.

On the whole if we see, Pakistan has emerged a large exporter of jeans to EU and to some extent to US. With about 20 million pcs going to US and about 100 million pcs going to Europe, Pakistan is not lacking in its capacity as a dream exporter. However, its share of 20% of EU market is quite good and next only to Bangladesh and China . It might soon overtake Chinese exports of denim jeans and be number two after Bangladesh.  [/private_special]

  • Eco Vintage from Desert Studio, Dubai

We had previously covered the Desert Studio – a unique denim facility at Dubai by Denim Clothing Company (DCC). The studio innovates with the latest technologies available to bring out some cool Eco washes on their jeans/garments . As we discussed with PD team at DCC , they briefed us about some of the latest inspirations which helped them create vintage washes using some of the latest technologies. The fabric directions, new weaves and constructions and inspiration ,styling , wash directions etc indicated y them are given below :

    Fabric directions

The key fabric directions are related to new color developments which help in accentuating the vintage looks :

    · New indigo dye mixes.

    · Sea green color

    · Ocean blue color

    · Pale blue color ( one dip )

    New weaves and Constructions

DCC launched these weaves, constructions and new fabrics at the Denim by PV show this May.

    · Waffels

    · Micro diamond

    · Canvas weaves

    · Broken twills

    · Melange wefts

    · Indigo wefts

    · Loam state unfinished and sanforized denim

    · 23 oz indigo fleece

    · 16oz selvedge

    Inspiration, styling and wash directions

The inspiration , styling and wash directions are summed up by them as:

“American 1940s vintage meets Japanese fashion hobo to create what we call a fresh modern vintage, working on denim bases of sea green, ocean blue and pale blues and using touches of rust colors, tints and pure indigo sprays -and not the typical vintage yellow tints -we created a vintage look with a much fresher feel .  We wanted to create a new take on vintage denim and washes but still be able to see the original raw denim in areas of the
    jeans!”

“With the Dubai Desert Studio laundry we took this idea to another level with the Eco vintage range.  Which is drawing on the same inspiration but creating modern vintage denims with using only modern day technologies, laser, ozone, waterless, low Energy and Nano bubbles.  Sustainable denim productions replacing conventional methods with eco technologies.”
