    Levis + Evrnu = 100% Recycled Jeans

Moving a step ahead in the field of sustainability, Global Jeanswear leader Levi Strauss & Co. has recently announced that they have created the world’s first jean made from regenerated post-consumer cotton waste . This innovation has been made possible with the help of textile technology startup EVRNU.
Evrnuâ„¢ is a social purpose corporation registered in the State of Washington, USA and founded in 2014 for the purpose of addressing the problem of the resource-intensive, environmentally negative impact of the textile & apparel industries. The Evrnu technology safely converts post-consumer cotton garment waste by breaking down to the molecular level and converting in to a high quality, premium textile fiber.

Levi Strauss & Co.partnered this year to create the first pair of jeans made entirely from post-consumer cotton waste. Discarded consumer waste is converted into renewable fiber after using a new ,patent-pending recycling technology . The first prototype, in the form of a pair of iconic Levi’s® 511® jeans, represents a future where textile waste is reduced considerably and cotton garments are continually regenerated to create a more sustainable world.

    Levis + Evrnu = 100% Recycled Jeans

Believing the figures, United States alone creates an average of 13.1 million tons of textile wastes  and out of which 11 million tons ends up in landfills. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, the U.S. generates an average of 25 billion pounds of textiles per year, or 82 pounds per person. Eighty-five percent (21 billion pounds), or 70 pounds per person, ends up in  landfills — accounting for 5 percent of all landfill space.Till now , there is no effective technology which could transform old apparels into new without telling upon the quality or strength. However with EVRNU technology, discarded cotton clothing can be turned into a new cotton-like fiber, creating new possibilities. This emerging technology doesn’t only act as a game changer for the Textile Industry but also help the industry to meet the increasing need for textiles and reduce both waste and water consumption.

Approximately five discarded cotton T-shirts have been used to develop the first prototype Levi’s jean and surprisingly 98 percent less water has been used than virgin cotton products while developing this innovation. Both companies are associated with a vision to create a circular economy that enhances the life of cotton and eliminates waste by infusing new life into used clothing. The partnership could help this technology scale up quickly and begin to make a significant impact.

Evrnu takes cotton garment waste, purifies it and breaks it down into a pulp. The organization then extrudes this pulp into a pristine new fiber that is finer than silk and stronger than cotton — made entirely of garment waste. Each tone of fabric (Jeans and T-shirts) consumes approximately 200 tons of water , however only two percent of water will used in the original garment process.

“We can take your old jeans, break them down to the molecular level, and build them back up into beautiful sweaters that feel good and hold color beautifully and When you are done with that sweater and it’s been reused and recycled, we can break it down again and convert it back into premium jeans.” quoted the officials of company.

By the end of 2025 , the experts predicted the volume of apparel industry to be doubled and the current rate of resource extraction can’t meet this demand. Considering it , there is an enormous opportunity for emerging technology that efficiently as well as effectively manages resources.  The process as given by the company can be seen in the image below :

  • US Imports 2016 | Men’s Jeans Fall While Women Jeans Rise!

US Imports 2016 | Men’s Jeans Fall While Women Jeans Rise!

The denim market scenario is US does not look too rosy with the latest statistics coming out. The market saw a down trend with the Men’s jeans imports taking a knock in the first quarter of 2016 . Going down 4.4% in absolute quantities, the men’s denim apparel carried forward the trend of the last few years of slump in demand. Lets see below the data of Men’s Denim and Women’s denim apparel imports into the US in the first quarter of 2016.

    Men’s Denim Imports (2015-2016, 1st quarter)
Year Men’s Denim Apparel % change
    2015 (Jan-March) 46.92 million pcs
    2016 (Jan-March) 44.88 million pcs -4.4%

The first quarter of the year is normally the slowest of the four quarters.  Though not too much can be predicted for the whole year but the starting of the year does not inspire.

Women’s denim however, does inspire a bit as it  does not go negative and keeps its head over water with a marginal 0.4% growth.

    Women’s Denim Imports (2015-2016 , 1st quarter)
Year Women’s Denim Apparel % change
    2015 (Jan-March) 41.19 million pcs
    2016 (Jan-March) 41.55 million pcs +0.4%

The second quarter would be critical as it would define the movement of the denim demand and the resultant imports from around the world – which constitutes more than 95% of total denim consumed in US.

The denim apparel imports into US peaked in 2013 at about 522 million pcs but slowly declined and fell to 475 million pcs in 2015. It remains to be seen how this year will perform. The initial data is not encouraging !

Fall 2016 Menswear RTW Collection–Part II

After the Part 1 of the Fall 16 for the women, we bring the Part 2 covering the Men’s denim by some of the known and some not so known labels. However, each of them adds his own unique perspective to the AW season.

    Junya Watanabe

Junya Watanabe’s well known denim collections which are most of the times bringing maximum with minimum design are always looked for . The military inspiration could be reflected in the uppers but he added his own elements –including solar panels ! His patched and distressed jeans did blend well with modern coats and shirts.

    Ann Demeulemeester

Not truely denim but very denimish coat could be an inspiration for the community. Very hairish and winterish !

Ann Demeulemeester Menswear Collection at Fall 2016

    Antonio Marras

Texas inspiration clearly reflected in the designs of Antonio Marras. Bit cartoonish and coarse – but denim was never sophisticated !

    Belstaff

For those looking for denim for very low temperatures may think of checking out the Belstaff !

Belstaff Menswear Collection at Fall 2016

    Brunello Cucinelli

The clothes looked appealing to an ageless audience which favors comfort and a sporty touch  with elegantly ripped denims, cashmere jogging-inspired pants, and  softly tailored pants for more formal occasions. A natural palette of earth tones, grays, and blues added a touch of distinctive character to a look with a versatile modern attitude.

Brunello Cucinelli Menswear Collection at Fall 2016

    ComaComme des Garçons Shirt

The Japanese brand plays around with a new take on 2 dimensions of the shirts and combines them with some patchy baggyish jeans  for that super cool and casual looks.

ComaComme des Garçons Shirt Menswear Collection at Fall 2016

    Calvin Klein Collection

Zucchelli transformed denim into a jacquard, painstakingly woven in an illusion of daily wear and tear, making the everyday precious.  The wear and tear here is rich and golden !

Calvin Klein Menswear Collection at Fall 2016

    Louis Vuitton

Kim Jones , the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s collections wrote  “VolezVoguezVoyagez” in a ribbony print, the title of the Vuitton retrospective currently packing them in at Paris’s Grand Palais on his denim jackets. His work is an ongoing conversation between now and then—tugging motifs and ideas from past and trying to integrate them into the future. The denim long coats and jackets were all in greys !

Louis Vuitton Collection at Fall 2016

    Roberto Cavalli

Ever the most entertaining designer, Cavalli comes out with some outlandish embroideries on the denims . But despite it , the clothes show his huge attention to detail in many ways.

The trend is getting stronger and the ORIGINALITY of denim is getting vogue again . Imports From China

Till the year 2010 , everything was perfect – imports of denim apparel from China were increasing at a good pace and was almost at their  highest  . However, from 2010 the scenario started worsening  with every passing year. With a growth in the import by 14.28% in 2010 , no one had predicted that the imports from China to USA will be fallen by 28.08% by the end of the year 2011. In 2012 the conditions seemed to be bit improved but again in 2014 as well as in 2015 the imports fell down . In 2013 the total imports were 155.23 million pcs which reduced to 133.13 millions pcs by the end of 2015 . The average price of imports (US$/Pcs) also changed , however the degree of change was bit lesser against the substantial decline of imports over the years. In 2009 the Average Price was US$7.49/Pc which reached to its all time high in 2013 at US$8.43/Pc.  From 2012 , it started reducing but in 2015 it again rose by 2.13% and reached to US$7.52/Pc

Average Price of Imports of Women’s Jeans into USA from Bangladesh from the year 2009-2015

Analyzing the share of China and Bangladesh in the total imports by USA, it is found that where  Bangladesh managed to increase its share by the end of every year , the share of China seems to be inconsistent and on average it reduced from 31.13% in 2010 to 28.33% in 2015. However the share of Bangladesh increased marginally from 13.26% in 2010 to 14.26% in 2015. Interestingly, the total exports  by Bangladesh reduced from 79.48 million pcs in 2010 to million pcs to 67.02 million pcs in 2015. This was in line with the general reduction in the overall volume of imports of denim apparel into US. However, this is not the case for all countries. Some countries like Vietnam have shown remarkable improvements in exports of apparel to US during the same period.

From the graph below, we can see that the share of China receding and that of Bangladesh comparatively better but not increasing as such.  The market share of US is continuously falling and unless the market improves the exports from any of the countries will not increase either.
