    “ Levi’s 501 Jeans : Celebrating 100 Years With Cone Denim”

Celebrating 100 years of partnership with Cone Mills Denim in North Carolina, the Levi’s brand presents a short documentary film, The 501® Jean: Stories of an Original. The film explores the lasting impact the Original 501® jean has had on cultural history. The story began in 1873 with the original button fly jeans and after more than a century it has been continuing with the same pace and innovations. From humble beginnings of being granted the patent to place rivets on trousers to a universal staple providing youth with their virgin denim experience, the name Levi’s has long been synonymous with blue jeans.

Levi’s has decided to pay tribute to its denim masterpiece with a three-part documentary series, titled The 501 Jean: Stories of an Original.

The three parts are titled “Work,” “Style,” and “Rebellion,” and explore the 501’s influence on various aspects of popular culture since its creation in 1873 (which made it the very first blue jean, might we add). It’s a fitting tribute to such an influential piece of clothing.

    NARRATED BY RAMBLIN’ JACK ELLIOTT
Ramblin’ Jack Elliott is one of folk music’s most enduring characters. A protégé of Woody Guthrie in the late ’50s, Elliott has been hailed as an influence on artists from Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger, to the Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead.

In 1915 Levi partnered with Cone denim- Fabric Mill in USA and since 1927, LEVI and CONE denim put red thread on the edges in their selvedge jeans which signifies Levis quality which is now known as red line selvedge . In the video it has been featured that Mike Harris and Russ Miller went to west in search of Denim mines and after travelling miles they traced the 501® Jean’s roots as a utilitarian garment for coal miners, cowboys, industrial workers, all the way to the creative workers who continue to wear it today. They also managed to find the denim mines where they got some worn out jeans which were happened to be of between 1893 and 1896. From Miners to farmers, now the denim serves for all sorts of workers.

So far as the top exporting countries are concerned, China is still leading the charts with whopping 133.13 million pcs in 2015 while Mexico ranks second with 110.02 million pcs. China is able to give an average price of about US$ 7.52 while Mexico’s average price is US$8.74. However, considering that there is no import duty on imports of garments from Mexico (made with US fabrics); the price will come out more or less same. But China gives much more fashionable products to US than Mexico – which is focused on basics. Bangladesh ranks 3rd with the lowest average price per jeans which is merely US$6.53. Pakistan comes 4the with a total of about 21 million pcs and Vietnam is at 5th with total export quantity of 19.13 million pcs at an average price of US$8.48.  It needs to be seen where the share of China will spill off once the country is not able to export as much it used to.

    Exporting Regions :

There are many regions and blocs which can be studied as a group to analyse which region is more important for exporting denim to US. Some of the main regions are Latin America, Asean, Agoa , Cafta etc. We analyse the figures from these countries as below.

Latin America is the highest contributor in the total import to the USA with total import quantity of 135.91 million pcs followed by ASEAN, AGOA and CAFTA with 48.74, 22.27 and 20.7 million pcs. Latin America – the main component is Mexico which takes the lion’s share of its exports. Among ASEAN countries, Vietnam is very important. AGOA still remains a small quantity and has not evolved over time despite duty benefits.

Better Denim Made From Sustainable Cotton And From Sustainable Processes Launches Lindex

Moving one step ahead , Lindex ,one of the leading fashion chains in Europe , has recently launched a spring campaign where sustainability in both material and process is in focus. From January 2016 a vast majority of all Lindex denim is made from sustainable cotton and produced in more sustainable processes saving water, energy and chemicals. With this new range of denim for both women’s and kids, Lindex continue to set the standard.

Some of the Better Denim styles are completely sustainable; made of organic cotton, with sustainable trims and produced with water, energy and chemical saving processes. All 5-pocket denims have the size printed in the waistband, reducing paper from not using main and size labels. The completely sustainable denims have hangtags made from recycled paper, attached with organic cotton strings. Some of the denim bottoms are even more sustainable with sustainable trims like zippers, buttons, rivets and badges.

For the Better Denim campaign, Lindex also introduces its very first upcycled item – a sneaker made from re-used denim. All parts of the shoe are sustainable with the denim fabric being collected from the post-consumer textile reuse and recycling flow, managed through Lindex stores and sorted by Swedish second hand organization Myrorna. The denim sneaker is made in collaboration between Lindex, Myrorna and Fair Unlimited.

Bangladesh Fashion Students Stunned The Denim World With Their Designs At The 5th Edition Of Denimsandjeans.com

The 2nd Bangladesh Fashion Students’ Denim Design Contest successfully completed on 3rd March ,2016 at Hotel Radisson , Dhaka . This was an  initiative  to bring the talent of aspiring young designers of Bangladesh to the world. The students from multiple fashion universities including INIFD,  NIFT,SMUCT, BUFT etc. had participated in this competition .

The students were given the theme of ‘Hi – Fashion Denim’ – a trend seen since last year whereby denim has entered the echelons of haute couture clothing. The students were invited to create designs on this concept and provided guidelines and support for the same. We had also planned that the garments of the students would be show cased on the FASHIONIM RUNWAY and the students created the garments with the same in mind. The best 15 garments were also to be put up on voting at our Denimsandjeans show where all the visitors and exhibitors would vote on the designs.

We were frankly not expecting too many international level designs to come up and were expecting to do one single sequence with the garments at the runway. However, we were stumped to see a large number of highly creative designs coming up from the students and we had to finally create 3 sequences at the runway and that too with some difficulty as it was very difficult to reject most of them.

The whole process of students design competition was guided by  Ms Anna Troupe, a sustainable design lecturer and social entrepreneur based in Dhaka. Besides there were great contributions by others including Mr Tanveer, Mr Arief Labu, Mr Jamil and Mr Rubaiyat and our Bangladesh and India teams  – all of whom helped the students in different ways in reaching the right destination in terms of their designs.

The FASHIONIM runway was already very hot when the collections of Vicunha Textil and Envoy Textil came to the ramp. However, it was literally set on fire when the designs of students were visible on the confidently walking models.  The audience were very excited to see some great designs and applauded them all the way. The excited students – who were also present at the show – did not leave any chance of encouraging the models who wore their designs and electrified the atmosphere. Yes ! it was for the first time in the history of denim  fashion shows, the designs of young students of Bangladesh was showcased to an international audience including Diesel team from Italy and India. Each and Every design was sophisticated and jaw dropping as well as demiurgic and had received tons of appreciation from all the attendees of FASHIONIM. The theme ‘Denim In High Fashion’ which was well captured and well executed by the students .

The students started with Let’s have a look at the sketches the students created and converted them into wonderful designs.
