  • Arvind Buys Next , Debenhams and American Lifestyle’s India Operations

arvindArvind Ltd – the flagship company of the $1.2 billion Lalbhai Group – has reinvented itself from a traditional ethnic fabric manufacturer to a dynamic company that professionalised its management and is now a force to reckon with in apparel brands and retail. Arvind Lifestyle Brands, a subsidiary of the Ahmedabad-based denim major Arvind, has acquired the business operations of British fashion retailers Debenhams, Next and American lifestyle brand Nautica in India from Planet Retail. Though India allows foreign retailers full ownership of their local operations in the single-brand segment, but many of these companies prefer to come into the country through the franchisee route.

The acquisition of Debenhams is considered  as significant mainly because it gives Arvind an entry into the luxury department store segment. Arvind plans to increase the current number of Debenhams stores in India from two to eight over the next three years. While through acquisition of Indian businesses of Next, Arvind will enter the fast-growing segment of the apparel specialty retail. It plans to increase the number of Next stores from three to 12 in the next three years. The licensing arrangement with Nautica will strengthen Arvind’s already strong position in high potential sportswear segment of the market. The company plans to set up additional 30 Nautica stores taking the tally to 41 free standing Nautica stores and 71 shop in shops in the next 3 year.

The company  plans to achieve Rs 500 crore (about $100 million ) revenues over the next five years from the current Rs 70 crore (about $14 million ) by investing Rs 150 crore(about $30 million )  in these three brands."

The company previously also has a large portfolio of brands including Licensed brands like Gant USA 1949,  Arrow, Cherokee , Energie , joint venture brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Bridge to Luxury, and own brands like Excalibur, Flying Machine, Ruf & Tuf, New Port University etc. The addition of  three more brands adds significantly to the portfolio of brands with Arvind.

At the same time,  Arvind  is also the 5th  largest denim manufacturer in the world. Arvind has since become one of India’s largest manufacturers of other woven fabrics as well, vertically integrated into garment manufacturing, and built one of India’s most impressive apparel brand portfolios.

Managing Director of Arvind -Sanjay Lalbhai – is working on creating the future growth engines for Arvind and setting it on its path to achieving the goal of being a $2 billion company in sales revenue by 2015 and these acquisitions are a part of this strategy.

Even on the social front, Sanjay Lalbhai  is actively involved in shaping Arvind’s engagement with society at large. Two such initiatives have flourished under his supervision. The first involves Arvind working with over 7,000 farmers to grow sustainable cotton across 60,000 acres of impoverished areas in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Through this project Arvind, is attempting to build a business model that integrates socio-economic benefits to farmers, a greener textile supply chain and financial benefits to industry.

The second initiative involves Arvind working with the municipal school system of Ahmedabad to build an education intervention model that helps impoverished students progress through the system and access opportunities for employment. Currently, this project benefits about 1,000 students each year.

  • US Denim Fabric Actual Production : 2009-2011

US has been the leader in denim fabric production since the 19th century and dominated the scene till the 90s. However, as is well known, the production capacities in US kept on decreasing in the last 2 decades and today the capacities are pale shadow of what they were before. However, it would still be a good idea to know how much of denim fabrics are ACTUALLY being produced in the US.

The special report has the following content:

    • Table showing the actual production figures (quarterwise ) for blue denim fabrics in US in all quarters of 2009, 2010 and first 2 quarters of 2011 .
    • Graph showing the trend of this production .
    • Figures for actual consumption of denim fabrics in US for local jeans and other denim apparel production.
    • Commentary.

    denim production in usa

We can see from the table and chart above that the blue denim fabric production in US  in 2011 has reduced compared to the production in 2009 and 2010. Compared to 2009, the reduction in 2011 is about 4.6%. This is not  a huge reduction looking at how the US is getting uncompetitive when it comes to denim production. However, it is to be noted that the actual  figures are till second quarter of 2011 and for the rest of the year we have extrapolated the first two quarter figures as the latest figures available are only till second quarter. The actual production in 2011 is likely to be lesser as the Liberty denim mill closed towards the end of 2011. In 2012 , the denim fabric production will be still lower as the complete impact of the closing of Liberty mill would be felt in this year. When we look at linear meters , we find that the production is between 90-100 million meters depending on the average width that we consider for these fabrics.

However, we will also see some increase in production of fabrics in the end of 2012 and the year 2013 as the Santana denim mill from Brazil , which has set up a  new manufacturing unit at Texas , will start its production. This would be almost a historic time for denim industry in US – having a new denim mill starting its production – and would have been unheard of for a long time !.

The denim produced in US is mainly used to be shipped to Latin American countries including  including Mexico for conversion into garments and for reimporting into US under various treaties like CAFTA. Some of the fabric is also used to produce denim jeans in US – though it is difficult to find how much of US denim is used in production of denim jeans in US. But the fabric consumed in US for domestic garment manufacturing in 2011 was about 41 million square meters  which helped the country to produce about 20 million denim garments.

  • Bossa Autumn Winter 13/14 Denim Collections

Bossa is a reputed manufacturerr of  in Turkey and produces over 40 million mtrs of denim p.a .  For its Fall/ Winter 13 Collection the company has come out with three concepts :

    1. Ultranero : The Ulimate Black Denim.
    2. Hyberblue : The Super Dark Blue
    3. Eden : Recycled Cotton Denim

Let’s have a look at these three concepts.

Ultranero – The Ultimate Black Denim

    image

“After 6 months of development trials, we are pleased to announce the launch of our Ultranero concept , a ground breaking approach to producing ultimate black jean that stays truly black , even after 40 home washes and beyond. Bossa  has created a unique process that combines the use of special dyestuffs and processes along with a specially devised technique for finishing the fabric. The result is an intense black shade of denim that holds its color for the life of the jeans. ” – says Bossa product development team

bringing the black denim back into focus .

Hyperblue  – The Super Dark Blue

    image

Bossa claims to have created the darkest shades ever supporting diferent treatments and technical specifications . Here is what their Research and Development Manager – Sedef  Uncu Aki has to say for Hyperblue .

“It took 9 months of hard work and experimentation , 19 slow and steady dips into the baths of pure indigo and finally Hyperblue emerges as the deepest , darkest shade of indigo. For true denim afficionado , the raw and rinse washes give an almost black blue of indigo that will gracefully and beautifully age over time. For the vintage lover , the deep rich color comes to life with heavy vintage washing that highlights the brilliant color contrast. For the environmentally conscious, ozone or lazer applications will create striking results .And for the technically minded, Hyperblue also has excellent crocking properties , despite the deep shade.”

    Eden – Recycled Cotton Denim

    image

The third concept from Bossa has an environmental orientation based on the concept of recycling of yarns , fabrics and garments – back into Denim …Gulperi Erkanli – Marketing Manager says

“Cotton and fabric waste can be produced at every stage of manufacturing and we have developed techniques to enable us to capture and recycle this waste. At the start of the process, bales of cotton are opened and turned into slivers. Broken yarns and slivers during this stage are set aside to be recycled. During the Rope Dyeing process, some ropes cannot make it to second stage of manufacturing due to dye saturation. Such ropes are also set aside .Finally , the waste of denim fabrics from apparel making  is also collected . It is estimated that 15% of denim fabrics from apparel making ends up as waste”.

All these wastes are sent to a recycling facility where a shredder reduces the pieces of fabrics , ropes and yarns into fibrous form. The recycled cotton fibre is then rebaled to go back to EDEN Bossa’s new spinning mill exclusively for recycled yarns and process begins all over. There are two features of fabric thus made :

    • Because  the recycled cotton is made from indigo dyed yarns and fabric, it is already blue in colour, so after rope dyeing, the fabric takes on a richer indigo hue.
    • Recycled cotton has a slubbier character which gives added texture and dimension to the fabric.

From the above table, we can see that the prime markets for Mexico are Colombia, Nicaragua and US. Colombia is one of the most important markets in South America and it is no wonder that Mexico should be shipping there . It is also for this reason that the Kaltex Group in Mexico bought the COLTIJER denim mill in Colombia.  Even many other countries export to Colombia and there are some good brands and buyers in Colombia .

Nicaragua is the latest country in South America which is showing promise of new growth story. The denim industry there is showing very good signs of growth and the exports to US have increased significantly in the last 2 years touching almost 24 million pieces of denim apparel  in 2011.  There is also a denim unit in Nicaragua which belongs to ITG – Cone group. The unit has been closed due to losses , but there are now frantic efforts to open this mill now.

The price at which Mexico is exporting denim fabrics are good prices given the costs of production in Mexico.  These prices are in square meter, so the actual price if the average width is 160 cm would be about $3.66 per meter which is a very decent price for the country as a whole. It shows good realisations by the companies in these markets.

  • EU- Over 12% Fall In Denim Imports Jan-May 2012

The poor economic situation of the EU region is reflected in the relevant fall in the imports of Denim Jeans into EU. For the period Jan- May 2012 , the imports of all jeans into EU27 fell by about 12.37%  over the same period last year. This had been already been anticipated by most exporters and the exporters to EU have been feeling the brunt of this fall in terms of reduced orders. Exporters in countries like Bangladesh have felt the heat with reduced order positions, shorter lead times being given by the buyers and in some extreme cases, cancellation of confirmed orders.
However, the average price of imported jeans continues to rise with over 6% rise in this period . The effect of increased prices of cotton are still reflected in these jeans to some extent – even though the cotton prices are about 1/3rd of what they were in Feb 2011 – see chart at end ..

    EU Jeans imported 2012

Whereas the quantity imported decreased from about 194 million pieces to 170 million pieces, the average price increased from Euro 7.39 /pc to Euro 7.84 per piece.

Average price of Jeans in EU 2012

It would be , however, important to understand whether both the men’s and women’s jeans imports have been equally affected . The men’s jeans imports fell by a larger % of about 14.95%  from 107 million pieces to 91 million pieces. On the other hand  the women’s jeans imports fell by 10.3% from 87 to 78 million pieces. This shows that the women’s import market is still comparatively better than that of men’s jeans and economic factors have affected the purchase of men’s jeans to a higher extent.

This has consequently hurt countries which are more focused on exporting men’s denims . We will cover in another report shortly , the impact on top exporters and the changing market dynamics of jeans exports to EU.

    Denim Conference at InDIGO 2012
The conference at InDIGO 2012, spanning over two days, will focus on innovation, capacity building, sustainability and growth opportunities in denim. It will witness a galaxy of eminent industrialists, learned professionals and technicians sharing their deep insight and wealth of knowledge with the participants, by way of interactive panel discussions and / or presentations, covering a wide range of subject lines relating to the Indian and international scenario in denim industry.
The theme of the InDIGO 2012 conference, as the name itself suggests, is “International Denim Industry – Growth Opportunities”. The idea behind is to explore and evaluate the opportunities, that are emerging, in the South Asian region, for collaborative working, technology exchange, expertise sharing, among the industry segment leaders. The theme session will highlight the key areas and respective strengths of individual players, and propose solutions which will guide the process of internationalization of denim industry in this region.
One major area of concern, in the context of Indian denim industry, is that the recent quantitative growth needs to be matched with qualitative evolution of the industry. The industry has to identify, understand and implement strategies and solutions to become globally competitive. The session titled “Indian Denim Industry – Growth & Evolution” will address these issues and concerns.
The conference will also take a close look at the innovations in denim, leading to constant evolution of the fabric of the people and for the people. In the recent years, a lot has happened in terms of improvement in quality and durability of fabric, along with the introduction of stretch denim, and  wide range of blends which have redefined denim. The session “Innovations in Denim – The Road Ahead” will attempt to review the past and peek at the denim of the future.
In today’s world, it is not possible to talk about denim and stay away from environmental pollution. The trend in denim fashion is turning more and more towards ecological concerns. Lower impact on the environment implies more style! The new must in production of denim is attention to sustainability not only of processes but also adapting eco-friendly technologies and fabrics. Saving of water and energy, use of fewer chemicals and less pollution of water bodies are becoming the integral symbols of a conscious style. “Denim Goes Green” is dedicated to a discussion on an environment friendly approach for the various segments of the denim industry.
Another very critical, though not so visible, dimension of the business of denim is about meeting quality standards, proper product testing and compliance. The manufacturers need to understand, very clearly, the possible defects and how to avoid them, so as to avoid rejections and losses. It is of critical importance to be familiar with the large variety of tests and certifications, sought in the international market and be prepared to deliver the same to continue to sell. Moreover, compliance related issues are gaining more and more importance, and proper knowledge of these will become essential for a company to remain in business. The session “Product Testing & Compliance – Doing It Right” will turn the spot-light to matters related to quality, testing and compliance.
Denim jeans make up one of the most fragmented, but also one of the most lucrative sectors of the apparel industry, with products aimed at men, women, teens and children. In the competitive era, retailers and brands alike are looking at new ways to grow business and enhance customer loyalty. With the internet serving as an important tool for both purchasing and researching apparel online shopping or e-tailing is also becoming increasingly popular. The discussion in the session “Finding Growth in Retail Market” will focus on how to seize the current challenges in order to be a future winner.
    Who should attend InDIGO 2012
