  • Many Denim Brands Loose Steam !

Levi’s – the market leader suffered a reduction of over 38% in its profits in the quarter March – May ‘12. Various reasons for this are being given are mainly economic impact of recession -loss of sales in Europe, impact of strong dollar . It is also the first time in 2 years that the sales of the company declined in Asia – a region which had been powering its growth.  This would be particularly disturbing for the company since Asian countries are  not really so bad in denim sales.

Taking the cue from the Levi’s situation and as an indication of the industry trend, shares of several denim makers like Guess, True Religion , Gap , V.F corp etc  fell…

On the other hand we see some mid-sized brands doing well too..image Hudson Jeans , the California based brand is reported to be expecting a decent revenue of about $85 million this year with EBIDTA touching almost $15 million – a figure considered not so bad by the industry. Moreover , the company is exploring option of sale with valuations reported to be touching $150 million.
imageAnd another cool brand – J Brand from US touches a turnover of about $100 million and is , like Hudson Jeans, mulling a sale. Prospective buyers include The Jones Group, Li and Fung  as well as Kellwood Co. . It is noteworthy that larger retailers do buy the smaller , well established brands , at whopping prices as VF bought 7 for all Mankind at $775 million.  These sudden inclination to sell brands gives rise to speculation whether many of these brands feel that they have reached their peaks !

imageAnyway, on a positive note , some brands like Paper Denim & Cloth  are considering the current time an opportune one and considering relaunch later this year . The brand had lost its way somewhere in 2006 when it used to be quite popular .

Bread and Butter - Temple of Denim

The Bread and Butter show for Spring/Summer 2013 was successfully concluded last week.  This year’s theme wasThe Rock – a testament to B&B’s presence and prominence in the industry.  Though the show experienced some setbacks with the withdrawal of major brands – Levi’s, Lee and Diesel , new niche brands found place and a new concept  ‘ Temple of Denim’  was created  with exclusive high-end Japanse, American and European denim brands. For the moment, Temple of imagedenim will only there for this one time, but there are a lot of possibilities for the future. The Temple of Denim became the new heart of the show . With about 27 denim brands including 45rpm from Japan, Denham, Adriano Goldschmidt, 7 For All Mankind, 3×1, Natural Selection, Rising Sun Co., Momotaro, Japan Blue, and others. Something new was the recognition given to two highly innovative denim mills – TRC (Italy ) and Orta Anadolu (Turkey) – who were included in the Temple area alongwith the brands.

Housed in over 3000 sq mtrs of roofed terrace, the show explored the theme of religion and was  a visual treat with  imitations of several religions from around the world. The show, in the wild spirit of denim,  ran on the wooden tables around which the visitors were seated. Temple of denim - BBB - Spring Summer 2013

Among the trends noticed at BBB  can be included Colored jeans – but which have  also undergone a transformation for the 2013 summer season; with textured , metallic and ombre jeans most noticeable. Indigo on Indigo was a popular theme as well.

  • Interview With Ms Nargis Soorty–Director Soorty Denim, Pakistan

Soorty Denim PakistanSoorty denim is one of the fastest growing denim companies from Asia and highly focused on the Research and Development activities. Based in Pakistan, they are a vertically integrated group with activities from Spinning to Garment mfg. We spoke to the dynamic director of the company – Mrs. Nargis Soorty to find out how the company is growing and the areas it is focusing on :

    1. Please tell us something about Soorty Denim and its history..

The name Soorty is synonymous with garments since the last 25 years. Soorty Denim’s history is comparatively newer. In fact, the first denim mill was built in 2005 with a view to cater its own garment needs. After the success of the first mill, the second mill was also started to cater to the export of fabrics after a tremendous increase in demand in global markets. We can now proudly claim our mill as about the largest one in Pakistan with a capacity of 3.2 million meters per month. Out of our capacity of 3.2 million meters/month, around 1.4 million is used to produce 60,000 garments a day and the remaining 1.8 million is available for exports of fabric.

Soorty Denim has been the fastest growing denim mill in Pakistan since its inception. Soorty Enterprises Ltd. as a whole employs more than 12,000 people in 12 units across Karachi. Our factories are certified by ISO 9001:2009, BSCI, SA 8000, GOTS, OE 100 as well as WRAP.
Our vertical integration helps us achieve precision and the utmost excellence in the manufacturing of our garments, right from its foundations. Going forward, we feel those companies who have garment and spinning units under their own umbrella will be the ones succeeding long-term.

    2. What are the main product strengths of your company ? What kind of customer base do you cater to ?

U-398BOur vision is to bring the right product in the market at the right time – to be proactive, ever-evolving, innovative and product development leaders. We are ready to experiment with anything new. Currently, we are mainly doing bottoms, specializing in constructing high quality fabrics for use in ladies high stretch jeggings. We experiment with different kinds of slubs and fibers such as modal, viscose and wool and weave with techniques that add value and uniqueness to our product. Coupled with our European laundry and garment expertise, we always have the extra edge when it comes to new developments. Our washing plant has collaborated with an Italian laundry team of 6 technicians from Martelli who have provided 2 years’ worth extensive training to our employees. The plant is one of its kinds in Asia and has been acclaimed by some buyers as the best they have seen in the region. We take pride in our ability to produce any sort of wash currently in the market.

Having our own RnD dept. in both denim and garment divisions alsosoorty denim fabrics benefits us tremendously as both teams are constantly researching and working together to create new collections and conjure new ideas. At the denim mill, our product development manager from Montebello works on our seasonal collections and a different Italian designer works with us in the garment division. Washing expertise is always available for help and experimentation during their research. The washing unit actually has its own RnD dept. that helps in research for different types of washes. Having this whole vertical chain helps us work like a single unit, stay connected and ultimately develop a superior product in a short timeframe.

soorty denim productsSoorty’s production model has the flexibility to produce for high street retailers as well as high fashion brands. Our high end product coupled with cutting edge prices means companies ranging from Gstar, Diesel, Tommy Hilfiger and Rock and Republic to Inditex Group, Esprit, Tom Tailor, C&A, Mango, Dorothy Perkins and a few others all benefit from our services. We have been working with some of them for many years in order to forge the strong relationships that now exist between us. We are currently exporting around 15 million jeans and twills yearly.

3..We hear of some interesting products from Soorty for A/W13 . Can you throw some light on it ?

Soorty always brings something new to its fabric collectionCoated denim fabrics Soorty, something unconventional & rich in its values. Since denim is all about innovation, concepts & refined ideas in the right direction, for our Autumn Winter collection 13/14 we have decided to experiment with avant-garde weaves as well as employ the over-arching theme of sustainability.

To accommodate the large customer range, the collection is divided into groups ranging from Leather Coated, Color denim, Weft Dyed to Back side coated and some special finishes.

In today’s world Denim is just not any regular fabric and that’s why our team has crafted & engineered the products with special fibers & finishes. Yes, we have taken it to a next level by incorporating trendy fibers like Tough Max, Thermolite, Wool, Recycle, Super Soft, Elasto-Soft, Dual Fx & T400.

One of the most significant elements of the collection is that we have added a special group named (Mile Stone) which is one of the customers most loved fabrics of all time. It reflects Soorty’s true heritage, passion & devotion to Denim.

    4. Your company is an integrated manufacturer – from yarn to garments .How does it help you add value for your customers?

Soorty womens denim collectionWe can proudly say that Soorty is the best example of vertically integrated manufacturer. We feel going forward the success of Denim mills will be accredited to garment manufacturing. The backward integration of Soorty is the perfect example.

Our research and development team in denim and garment division work in cordination to bring out new collection and new ideas continuously, starting from yarn to washing techniques. Having the complete setup under one umbrella is an advantage in today’s competitve world.

5.The denim industry grown very well in Pakistan over the last decade. What do you think are the reasons for the same?

Pakistan is one of the largest producer of cotton. It has the short staple courser cotton ideal for denim fabric. Besides, Pakistan was he pioneer in textile industry. During the quota free regime till 2005 Pakistan was one of the duty free countries for EU. This gave the industry more and more oppurtunity to invest and prosper. We have institutes and experience which give us an advantage over our neighbouring countries. Almost 55% of our export is textile..

    6. What are the trends emerging that you see for denim fabrics , garment styling , washes etc?

The emerging trends for the future seem to reflect on an emphasis onwomens denim fall winter 2013 new fibers and weaving techniques. Denim is now becoming an integral part of every wardrobe and it seems as though cleaner looks will become popular in concord with its new role as practical, every day clothing. The fabric will also have a richer feel and look which will make it more versatile and appealing for not only work wear but every other occasion too. Additionally, the washes will be focused towards greater sustainability and eco-friendliness. Styling will vary from simple to more innovative cuts which will enhance the body contours giving a slimmer silhouette.

    7. Denim has undergone a massive transformation over the last two decades . In early 90s denim used to be a 14.5 oz standard product and today all kinds of fibers, dyeing techniques, weaves ,finishes etc are used . How much future scope do you think is left to take these developments further?

In the past decade science has advanced by leaps and bounds . There is so much more room for improvement. I see a lot more new development in fibre and slubs. The weaving techinques will be adjusted accordingly to having that cutting dge advantage of such versatile fabric. Making it not only sustainable but giving the comfort and stretch needed in this fast pace lifestyle.

    8. We have been hearing of talks between Indian and Pakistan ministries to alter duty structures so that import of fabrics from either country into other becomes duty free. Do you think this could help the denim industry  ?

This is going to be a key part in the interest of both the countries .Pakistan being a huge producer of textile and India has a hige consumer market. We see a lot of oppurtunity with the right policy in place I think both countries will have an advantage.

    9. Europe is undergoing some difficult times. Do you think this will affect the consumption of denim there?

Europe is going through a correction phase which will no doubt effect the economies every where. Denim growth will be affected momentarily. The top retailer are planning to venture into new markets in BRIC which will keep the steady growth.

    10. How is Soorty adding value for customers in such difficult times?

Our team thrives on new findings and loves to experiment with new discoveries and for this reason we have a monthly collection on our website which our customers have excess to and they can choose the fit or the wash look for their new season. There is a tab for accessories as well. With only a click of the button a new product is created. Soorty always delivers “value for money”. This is our policy and our customers have an advantage since they work with us. Being a vertically integrated company our customer has the best lead time to new developments and advantage over others to react to the demand and supply of today’s volatile fashion industry.

  • Wrangler Launches Denim Spa

    Wrangler Spa Denim

In the first of a series of innovative denims, Wrangler is trying to create a niche in “Wellness” – an area largely unexplored by the denim brands. For next Spring/Summer 2013, Wrangler has created three women’s models, for the Denim Spa collection: Smooth Legs, which contain anti-cellulite features, Jojoba, which keeps skin hydrated, and finally the scented Aloe Vera model, which also hydrates the skin. The three types of treatments are available for the skinny jeans models, and maintain the treatment for at least ten washes.
Adam Kakembo, Vice President Product & Marketing, Wrangler EMEA. elaborates on the new products-

“Wrangler was initially created as a clothing supplier for cowboys who wanted to have stylish, but also practical apparel. Focusing on this concept, we believe that the most important aspect of an article of clothing is that it produces wellness for the body. We decided to innovate our products in this way, and so we launched Wellness Denim”.

Wrangler has been working on this project for over a year and had enlisted the support of a French University where about 160 women tested its products and , as reported, about 2/3rd of women noticed considerable differences.
    Wellness Denim Wrangler

The product will be launched in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia

The complete Denim Spa concept, including POS material, displays and hang-tags, is being debuted at Bread and Butter in Berlin which is currently underway. At this point in time, Wrangler also plans to release more details about the label’s first European mono-brand store, which is set to open in Germany this year.

It is worth noting that some denim mills like Royo from Europe had developed some Wellness Fabrics in the recent past who even filed the patent for the same. Whether Wrangler uses Royo Denim or not is not clear , but surely it is  product for the future especially if its benefits are felt by the consumers.

  • Diesel Fall Winter 2012 Denim Looks

Diesel Spring Fall Winter 2012 menswear collection  is a continuation of the preview collection and its themes of  portworker and  “The thin line between old and new.”

Here are some excerpts on what Diesel has to say for their Fall Men’s Collection :

“Early Fall sees tobacco and different shades of indigo predominate. Indigo is used for denim, as well as treated corduroy pants and jackets, while tobacco sits pretty on a number of different jackets. It all has a touch of the great outdoors, particularly in hybrid boots and light bodywarmers. Not to mention  the patterned jacquard knits that create warm, unified style across sweaters, gloves, scarves and hats.”

Burgundy is the new colour of the season. It is used in a variety of knitwear styles, as well as becoming a new Color Exposure shade for denim: the reverse sides of jeans match the new knitwear. Workwear remains firmly embedded in Diesel’s DNA and naturally denim workwear is key to this collection. Whether treated and untreated, plain or striped, textured or smooth, jeans, utility jackets and overalls treat workwear with the respect it deserves.

Diesel Fall Winter 2012 Men's Denim Collection
Diesel Men's Denim Fall Winter 2012 Collection
For early Winter, indigo is joined by gray and green
. A bright, eye-popping green is featured on the delivery’s key piece: unique knickerbockers training pants in patterned knitwear. This idea of making a classic an original – hi-tech performance vintage – is also seen in denim, where grandpa-stripe denim is coated to produce a technical, contemporary workwear look. Outerwear is quite simply premium thanks to a fascinating mix of fabrics, as seen in the hybrid jacket that combines knitwear and fake fur. Winter work apparel is also lined to feel soft and cozy while keeping you warm in the cold.
The final part of the collection takes black and redefines it in a variety of different fabrics: leather, denim, shearling and hi-tech nylon. Add a few touches of gray and white to spice things up and you have clothes that are chic and relaxed. For a Winter rock ook, there is leather in tight jackets and slinky pants, for clothes
in which you’ll want to strut your stuff. Diesel’s redefinition of what denim can be continues with its Color Exposure D.N.A. denim. Featuring delicate handmade treatments that impregnate deep into the heart of the fabric, the insides of jeans become bright features in themselves – using yarn dyed wefts or simply overdyes. Just slip them on, turn up the leg and you’ve got a whole new world of color in your denim life.
    Textured Denim:
A new approach – and one that will continue in the future – is the use of textured denim, with herringbone, salt&pepper and grandpa stripes, in treated and untreated versions.   In the accessory collection is recognizable the strong and vintage Diesel DNA.

  • The Online Denim Show Launched

We are pleased to announce the creation and beta launch of a new digital tool for the denim industry. We are starting an ‘ Online Denim Show’  which will help denim mills to show their collections to their own buyers as well to new buyers around the world.

Having worked in the denim industry for a long time,  it is easy to understand the complexities involved in the process of new fabric developments and their marketing to buyers.  Companies develop many fabrics  and the time taken thereafter in arranging them to be sent to right customers in desired number of washes and looks is not very short. It is often felt that it is not practical to do sampling of all new developed products to most of the customers – for the reason of time and costs involved . Often , a customer may not end up looking at a fabric which a mill developed and which he wanted , for the simple reason that the fabric was either not sent to him or the right washes or styles could not be sent due to physical limitations.

Often,  I have seen that the mills have beautiful fabrics which are lying down deep in the heap of  R&D department because the marketing deptt and the buyers are overwhelmed by many other latest developments and often they themselves lose track of all developments that the company has done before.

On the other hand , the buyers normally find it difficult to browse through a large number of samples sent by mills. Also, the buyers need some basic sorting of products on the basis of which they can go through various products. We provide various options in this regard. Would a sourcing person from a large brand be happy if he/she is able to browse through denim products of 5 denim mills in over an hour and make a shortlist of the products that interest him/her so that in the upcoming meetings those products could be focused on ..????

Another reason for this development is that we strongly feel that the world is getting digitized – no aspect of our life is being left untouched by digitization. Every industry is gaining from this process and improving efficiencies and so should the denim industry. So , we decided to create an online tool to help create more efficiencies specially in the process of product marketing  .  This ‘ Online Denim Show’ has been developed over a long period of time keeping in mind the considerations and concerns of the people working in the industry specially the denim mills and buyers of fabrics. The features of this show are listed below :

    For Exhibitors / Mills

    Denim Show | Exhibitors

    a) Display in Multiple Forms: The mills can upload the details and the photographs of their fabrics . Each product can be displayed in a number of ways eg in pure fabric form , different washed looks , different styles eg jeans/jackets etc . So each product can be displayed in 10 or more different ways. This enables a buyer to have a very good idea about that product .

b)Categorize products : Strictly denim specific categorization of products helps the buyers to understand products under one category. The exhibitors can create their own categories for products besides using the ones that we provide ..

c)Close Physical View: If the  photographs are taken as per our guidance, then we can surely say that the buyers would get the intricate looks of the fabrics/garments due to the software used by us. The product will be visible as it may be at different physical distances and almost give the Feel and Smell of the fabric!!

    d) Old and New Buyers : The exhibitors can not only show their products to their existing buyers, but also will be able to get to show their products to new buyers who register at our site from around the world.  This will open up the possibilities of getting New Buyers for the exhibitors. But hey, will the products be visible to everyone ? What about privacies of products of each company  ??????
Well, we have taken care of that. No buyer can enter the showroom of a supplier unless he/she is

    • First approved by us .
    • Secondly approved by the exhibitor .

Thus we have kept two stages of checking and filtration to ensure only the really genuine buyers/agents/sourcing guys etc can enter our show and only those whom the company wants to show its products to. This show is ONLY FOR SERIOUS DENIM PEOPLE.

e)No. of Products: For initial few exhibitors, we have not kept any limitation on the number of products they can upload and display. This gives the flexibility to these exhibitors to bring out all of their products to the attention of the buyers. I think it would be interesting for even the marketing guys from these companies to see how their products look when seen in different categories/washes/styles in a continuous loop form.

    f) Communication on each product : If the buyer and exhibitor want, they can have a communication on our site related to Each Single Product. The exhibitor would come to know what kind of products are more popular and who is visiting them more and liking them and also check out their comments. This would help them to get speedy feedbacks on their products. Thus they can generate database on the kind of responses they are getting on different products and take their development accordingly. They can also understand which products are more popular.

g)Privacy Ensured: We know the sensitivity of mills in sharing their information related to pricing , product details etc. On our site, they Need Not make any mention of prices and only show as much details of their products as they would like to . They can easily take their communication offline with the buyers once they have initial contact and responses on products.  Hence, this is not a cause of anxiety at our show.

h)Continuous Evolvement : The show shall receive feedbacks from the exhibitors and buyers and continuously develop new features to make the interaction as close to real as possible . Having our own development team gives us that strength to develop features in shorter time and with more flexibility.

i)Twice a year collections launch: We will actually have a period of about one week every six months when the companies can launch their collections online. We shall be promoting these events and ensuring buyer participation so that these collections are specially viewed by the buyers. These seasonal offerings would be one of the key strengths of our Online Show.

j)Customized Homepage: We shall create  a customized homepage for each exhibitor. This homepage will include info from the company as well as any videos, presentations, and news from the company. This homepage will enable the companies to have their own unique vibe to their show and will be visible to all visitors.

We shall be  further providing to our exhibitors :

    • Continuous and unlimited email /phone support for 365 days.
    • Admin facility where they can themselves upload and track their products and buyers. Alternatively , we will do it for them if they want.
    • For the first 5 exhibitors , we will also provide support of shooting their collections in the right format if they want.
    • Guidance on how they can make their showrooms more attractive and display their products properly. Since this is a new concept , we shall be literally hand holding them through the entire processes until they can do it themselves.
    • Creating their customized Homepage on our site where their own photographs, info , videos and any other details may be displayed.

    Buyers/Visitors

The buyers can easily register FREE on our site at this pageOur only requirement from those registering on our site is that they should be people from the denim brands/ retailers/ trading houses etc who are involved in the denim selection and purchase activities. They could be designers, sourcing guys, buyers, account managers ,agents etc. We shall individually verify each registrant to ensure that we are getting the right people in.  While this may cause a little inconvenience , it will make the further process of visiting showrooms and interacting with exhibitors seamless.

The buyers can save and like the products they like and initiate dialogue with the suppliers on individual products. They will find the process of browsing through the products easy and enable them to quickly scan hundreds of products and shortlist. Imagine – sitting at the airport , waiting for the flight , and being able to go through the collection of a few companies and sending them the comments so that when they come for a meeting in the next few weeks, they could bring more samples of pieces selected .

    Demo Of Show Functionalities

Since this is a private show, it will not be completely  visible to general visitors. For those who wish to know more about the show and understand it , we would be giving a one to one online  demonstration over the skype .  We have also created ‘Test’ exhibitor on our site with a showroom to enable the companies to see how a typical showroom would look like and to understand what kind of looks denim products may have on our site.

Contact us  at this email address if you wish to know more about the show or want to have a demo.

  • Denim Import Duty Calculator For India (Download)

denim duty calculator downloadIndia is one of the BRIC countries and has grown well in the last decade. When it comes to the denim industry , we find that the growth has been tremendous with the denim capacities having doubled in the last 5 years to more than 800 million mtrs now.

Indian denim capacities have not grown on the support of export demand but due to its huge domestic market which is not showing any signs of reducing its hunger for denim. With over 500 million mtrs of denim being consumed in India alone and the market growing at over 10% p.a , the potential for market growth is tremendous. This is the reason that capacities are growing on a very regular basis. We can safely predict that within 5 years, Indian denim market would be bigger than that of USA.

This market also has potential for fabric companies wanting to export to India. However, the major hurdle is the duty structure which is protective for Indian Industry and not conducive for large scale imports . This duty structure protects the Indian industry and is likely to do for some more time. Besides the duties being high , the process of duty calculations is very cumbersome and for an importer wanting to import denim into India, it is a headache to understand the same. Denim not only falls under different heads, but the duty structure changes with the change in price. Then the other factor is the dollar /rupee exchange rate. This rate has been fluctuating rapidly over last year or so. With the change in dollar rate, the duty % can actually changes. Hence we have to take the exchange rate also into consideration.

What we have done is that we have created a duty calculator for calculating the duties at various price levels and under various heads so that it becomes really easy to find the duties applicable. This is a dynamic calculator where users can use the current exchange rate and enter different prices of fabrics (under different heads) as guided and get the duty % . Thus it is useful for exporters to and importers into India. This calculator can be downloaded from the download link available to our subscribers.

The process of using the calculator and the link to download are given below :

PS: Don’t forget to see our video on Fall / Winter 2013 Denim Trends

    [private_special]

Denim is mainly imported under two HS codes  – 520942 and 521142.. HS code 520942 is used mainly for blue denim and cotton content over 85% .
521142 is used where the content of cotton is less than 85% and also sometimes for denims which are not blue in color eg black denim.

So when you open the calculator , you need to do the following.. Just enter the Dollar / Rupee exchange rate in the top right orange box and then enter price of fabric in SQ.M in the two formula boxes given as per direction. You will immediately get the duty % . If you face any problem, you can let us know.

You can download the Calculator from here Duty Structure denim

  • US Columbia Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA) In Force

US Colombia Trade : DenimMore than 80% of U.S. exports of consumer and industrial products to Colombia become duty-free as part of the U.S. – Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement which came into force on May 15,2012. This includes agricultural and construction equipment, building products, aircraft and parts, fertilizers, textiles, information technology equipment, medical scientific equipment, and wood. The United States remains the largest supplier to the Colombian market, with Colombian imports from the U.S. in 2011 totaling $13.7 billion, or one-quarter of Colombia’s imports.

Other top Colombian import markets include China, Mexico and Brazil. The U.S. is the largest market for Colombia’s exports, representing nearly 40 percent of the Colombian export market.

    • Between 2001 and 2011 U.S. goods exports to Colombia quadrupled, growing from $3.6 billion in 2001 to $14.3 billion in 2011. U.S. goods exports in 2011 were 19 percent higher than the previous year.
    • Colombia has grown from being the 33rd largest market for U.S. goods exports in 1991 to become the 22nd largest market in 2011.
    • Manufactured goods represented 92 percent of U.S. goods exports to Colombia in 2011.
    • Increasing exports to Colombia has benefits at the local level as well as the national. In 2011, more than half of U.S. States (26 total) reported merchandise export shipments to Colombia above $75 million.
    • In 2011, the largest state exporters of merchandise to Colombia included Texas ($5.1 billion), Florida ($2.8 billion), Louisiana ($894 million), California ($534 million) and Illinois ($454 million).

    Impact On Textiles Trade

Lets see how this act would impact the trade of textiles between the two countries. Many of Colombia’s textile and apparel inputs, including fibers, yarns, and fabrics, are purchased from U.S. suppliers. Until the entry into force of the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA), these inputs have been subject to duties of up to 20 percent, with the exception of inputs used in apparel qualifying for trade preferences under the  Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act(ATPDEA). The Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA) was enacted in December 1991, to help four Andean countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru) in their fight against drug production and trafficking by expanding their economic alternatives.
With the TPA in place, tariffs will be eliminated, reducing costs, and providing greater incentive for Colombian firms to buy U.S. fibers, yarns, and fabrics and for U.S. firms to invest in Colombia.  It’s a win-win for both the U.S. and Colombian textile and apparel industries.

In addition to duty-free benefits, the TPA contains several important flexibilities and protections to make sure that the U.S. industry is not harmed by the flow of imports from Colombia. For example, the TPA contains a textile-specific safeguard mechanism that allows most favoured nation (MFN) tariffs to be temporarily re-imposed if a surge in duty-free imports from Colombia is shown to be causing or threatening to cause serious damage to domestic industry. The TPA also includes specific customs cooperation language for enforcing measures affecting trade in textile and apparel goods to help prevent the circumvention of the agreement’s rules on the origin of inputs and finishing processes.

The exports of denim apparel from Colombia to US have consistently decreased over the period of 4 years. The reasons are varied including the current economic situation in the US. However,  lately there have been efforts by some retailers to shift the sourcing to South / Central America given the increasing costs of production in China. This has already given fillip to near sourcing and this is also going to help increase the trade between US and Columbia .
