  • Wabash- The Special Indigo Dyed Look

Wabash- The Special Indigo Dyed Look

Wabash – Indigo Discharge Dyeing , refers to the process of creating patterns and prints on a fabric base that is dyed in Indigo. The phrase discharge dyeing is almost an oxymoron, because the process by which a Wabash print is created is actually not dyeing but removing parts of the already dyed indigo fabric to create a pattern or print. The base indigo dyed fabric goes through an oxidation process to remove parts of the dye in the form of a pattern.

Wabash looks like quite a formal fabric, but in fact it was commonly used for work wear from the early 1800s through to the early 1900s, very often as uniforms for the massive US railroads work force.  Finding out a lot about Wabash is very difficult, but we believe there were 2 ways in which the dots were originally “applied” to the base fabric:

    • The pattern would be applied as a block print to the undyed fabric with a starch based “resist” and then dyed, the dye not adhering to the resistant pattern; and
    • The fabric was dyed and then the pattern bleached into the fabric – this was done by applying a mildly acidic solution to the cloth via copper rollers with the pattern raised from the surface of the roller, a process known as discharge printing.

There have been a number of famous Dyeing and Printing companies which used this technique in 19th and 20th Centuries. Perhaps the most famous of the American Wabash dying and printing companies was J.L. Stifel & Sons set up in West Virginia in 1835.  They called their product “Indigo Wabash Stripe” and it was often characterized by an impressive assortment of dots, triangles and diamonds. A few advts. pertaining to that era are illustrative.

However, in recent years, it is the Japanese who have extensively used Wabash in their collections . Brands from Momotaro to Samurai to Iron Heart and many other small but niche brands have been using Wabash in their collections on a regular basis. The technique has been further developed using different woven and dyed bases  for that increased contrasts and striking views . Even weaving techniques have been blended to create or accentuate such effects .We list some of the Wabash designs from few Japanese brands in the images below. The brands their own signature accessories and impacts to the collection differentiating them from other Wabash items in the market.

On the whole if we see, Pakistan has emerged a large exporter of jeans to EU and to some extent to US. With about 20 million pcs going to US and about 100 million pcs going to Europe, Pakistan is not lacking in its capacity as a dream exporter. However, its share of 20% of EU market is quite good and next only to Bangladesh and China . It might soon overtake Chinese exports of denim jeans and be number two after Bangladesh.  [/private_special]

  • Mavi Launches Indigo Move Collection In Collaboration With Adriano Goldschmied

Mavi Launches Indigo Move Collection In Collaboration With Adriano Goldschmied

Celebrating its silver jubilee, Mavi recently announced its partnership with the ultimate indigo authority, Adriano Goldschmied– The Father Of Denim, and had launched Indigo Move September 2016. Focused on the concept of an active lifestyle and comfort, Indigo Move is a new generation of products that captures Mavi’s “perfect feel” philosophy highlighted by clean, sporty styling and signature design details. The men’s and women’s capsule collection will take you from day through evening, elevating the athleisure category into a lifestyle necessity.

The Indigo Move collection has 24 women styles and 13 men styles designed by Goldschmied in collaboration with Mavi. Available in all indigo shades including ink, smoke, and black, the assortment introduces new silhouettes and fits for Mavi. The foundation for the women’s collection is to bring into the athleisure concept the inspiration from Mavi’s classic mid-rise super skinny, the Adriana.

Expanding on the Adriana body, the selection adds leggings (Elsa & Kiki), super high-rise skinnies (Lucy), gauchos (Daria) and mermaid flares (Linda). To round off the look, bomber jackets (Liv), track jackets (Fiona), blazers (Lucia), trenches (Sara), and denim zip-ups (Tammy) make their debut for easy transition from day to evening. For the men’s category, Mavi uses its regular-rise slim leg fit, the Jake, as the base. Clean, modern, and a Mavi Indigo Move signature, the capsule adds joggers (Jimmy), track jackets (Kevin), blazers (Kit), and hooded pull-ups (Ken).

‘’Mavi means blue in Turkish, and the passion for the blue has been a fundamental pillar of the brand from the first time I worked with Mavi, over 25-years ago. Since then, the amazing Mavi team, powered by this passion, has created one of the leading global brands in the denim industry today. To work with such an innovative group, full of energy and the desire to always be one step ahead in the business, together we were able to create a collection that is truly an incredible achievement for all,” says Adriano Goldschmied.

The collection utilizes two exclusive fabrics:

    •  Move Denim: The new material, Indigo Move, is a key element that defines the collection. Offered in different weights and indigo shades, the knit-based fabrication is bringing a strong innovation when compared to the woven denim. The result is the washing effects of a real indigo natural brush denim shadings. Truly a second skin, the knit has the movement, stretch and performance of activewear.

    • Bi-Stretch Denim: Incorporating multi-directional stretch, the fabric is developed to ensure maximum freedom of movement and provide extreme comfort for an ebullient lifestyle. Able to stretch from above to below and left to right, the pieces offer excellent shape retention and perfect elongation. Along with designer details and specialty finishes, the result is the ultimate lifestyle staple going beyond athleisure.

“We are excited to celebrate our 25th anniversary with the launch of Indigo Move and collaborating with Adriano Goldschmied” says Elif Akarlilar, Global Brand Director of Mavi. “Continuing our philosophy about movement, luxury, and staying ahead of denim trends, this collection is the epitome of all three categories. Designed by fabrics innovators and created with the latest indigo textile and fabric technology, Indigo Move is the next step in an athleisure lifestyle”.

The Indigo Move collection will retail between $98 to $148 and will be available at www.mavi.com, Mavi Brooklyn retail locations, and other retailors worldwide.

Indigo People | Natural Indigos For Fall 2016

Natural indigo – though costlier and more difficult to dye than the synthetic indigo  – brings out different aesthetics (better for many)  than the synthetic indigo. And when it is applied on hand spun yarn and then handwoven , the products become completely natural and bring out the cultural heritage to the fore. This is what the  Indigo People duo Kiat and Johan do with their enterprise which was established in 2013. Combining contemporary design with authentic techniques, every product is unique. Each product is hand woven and customized with integrity by a master artisan, who hand picks the base materials an dyes them in indigo main

The main weaving techniques used are ‘ikat’, ‘open weave’, ‘batik’, and ‘4-grill’. These production methods can result in little imperfections, giving each product a unique appearance. The main material is based on unbleached and unprocessed cotton. The raw cotton is manually spun, which results in unevenness in the yarns. These little nubs in the weaving yarns give the product a natural and rugged look.

The scarves are traditionally hand loomed and manually dyed in natural indigo following the ikat technique. The patterns are manually tied on the weaving yarns to resist dye. The designs are inspired by vintage ikat patterns and given a contemporary twist. New is the composition of 70% cotton and 30% rayon. The blend of cotton and rayon results in a very soft hand feel and increase the wear comfort of the scarves.

Next to the well known handcrafted indigo scarves and ties, Indigo People is bringing 3 new product groups in this new collection: T-shirts, Bandanas , Ties and Bags. All ties are made from fabrics that are natural indigo dyed and hand woven following the traditional ikat technique. The inspirations for the sophisticated ikat designs come from the old Japanese Shibori Textiles. The t-shirts and bandanas are produced following the authentic batik technique. The artworks are stamped or printed with hot wax to resist dye during the indigo dyeing process. The artworks are then cracked and the garments are manually dyed, piece by piece, in natural indigo. To reach the dark indigo color, the dye master has to dip the garments up to 16 times in indigo. After dyeing, the garments are boiled in hot water to remove the wax. The printed artworks and the cracked lines remain their raw color and appear on the garments.

The bags are offered in 2 different fabrics:

    • 17-ounce hand woven selvedge denim in natural indigo .
    • 17-ounce hand woven batik denim.

The 17-ounce selvedge denim is hand woven and hand dyed in natural indigo. Because of the manual dye process, a color difference occurs in the finished fabric, there is no way to avoid this. This is considered as the uniqueness and charm of hand woven and hand dyed denim. The base twill fabric of the 17-ounce batik denim is hand woven like the selvedge denim. The pattern is printed following the traditional batik printing technique by stamping with hot wax. Removing the wax in hot water causes big color shading in the fabric because of its heavy weight and thickness; this color shading gives the fabric a vintage look.

Scotch & Soda Joins Hands With Reliance Brands In India

Reliance Brands, a part of Reliance Industries Group, which runs stores of 19 international brands in India – including the likes of Muji, Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden, Diesel and Brooks Brothers has entered into a master franchise pact with the premium Dutch youth fashion company, Scotch and Soda, to set up its stores in all major Indian cities by next year.

Dutch apparel brand Scotch & Soda, which was being sold exclusively on Myntra.com, has cracked a long-term partnership with Reliance Brands to open its stores in India. The e-commerce rights for the brand will also move to Reliance at a time when fashion retailers are looking to deploy a multi-channel strategy of having physical stores as well as a notable online presence.Myntra had struck an exclusive partnership with the Amsterdam-based brand in 2014. Over the past two years, a bunch of international fashion brands like Topshop , Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge inked exclusive partnerships with the likes of Jabong.com and Myntra.com  to test the India market.  Recently Flipkart – the e commerce giant – has purchased Jabong through its subsidiary Myntra to become the largest retailer of fashion clothing in India. Reliance seeks to challenge the domination of Flipkart in this realm.

Scotch and Soda has over 160 stores of their own globally, and can be found in over 8,000 other outlets, including the best global department stores, as also on their Web store. The merchandise is designed at their church-turned-studio in the heart of Amsterdam. Darshan Mehta, President and Chief Executive of Reliance Brands said

“It is ironic that in an increasingly crowded premium fashion space, getting a good tee or a nicely washed and well-fitting denim is rare Scotch & Soda is one of the few companies that is dedicated to crafting quality garments rather than emphasising on the brand logo. I have long been their admirer and consumer. The brand’s stores echo the theatre of their craft. Refreshingly differentiated. We now have the privilege and joy of partnering with them for India“

Over the past year, business houses like Aditya Birla Group, Reliance Industries ,and the Tata have all spruced up their online commerce offerings, particularly in the fashion and lifestyle category . Snagging online rights has become significant for retail groups which bring in foreign retailers to India. Recently, fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 snapped ties with Myntra and bagged a new deal with Madura Fashion and Lifestyle, which gave the group online and offline rights for the American brand. Scotch and Soda going to Reliance is another setback for Myntra.

The newly-formed partnership will drive Reliance Brands to go more deeper in the roots of the premium retail market in India coupled with Scotch & Soda’s global expansion drive.

The Denimsandjeans Shows bring a platform for the global denim community to come together at different sourcing locations making it easy for the sourcing community to plan their buying of denim and related apparel from that particular location. With the site Denimsandjeans.com serving the global denim community since 2007 , the Denim supply chain shows were the next offering from the Denimsandjeans Stable.  The first denim show in Bangladesh was launched by Denimsandjeans in 2014 and again the first denim show in Vietnam was launched in 2016 June.  The sixth edition of our Denimsandjeans Bangladesh show is also being held in Dhaka on October 5 and 6 .
Taking the idea of creating platforms for the global community,  we created the first Global Online Denim show which was launched recently  . It is again an innovative approach to increase the “Speed to market” and reduce the “Information Gaps and Delays”between the denim mills and buyers.

We will continue to serve the global community by creating value added services and platforms  in the coming times.
