  • UK Jeans sales expected to be @ 3 jeans/second!

Three pairs of Jeans will be sold in UK this year every second ! . Why?
Because the demand is increasing in the UK and the total pair of Jeans sold in UK will be around 86 million pairs in 2007 and the total amount spend by Britons on Jeans will be about GBP1.5billion..

What does it mean? It means that:

the per capita sales of Jeans in UK will be around 1.4 .
the average price of Jeans sold in UK will be around GBP 17/-
there will be an increase of about 40% in volume since 2002..

Who is benefitting from this increased demand?

Mainly the Own-label jeans made by the likes of George at Asda, Marks and Spencer and Topshop have seen by far and away the largest increase in sales compared with branded jeans.
Between 2004 and 2006 , the Own-label Jeans sales grew by 41% and accounted for about 24% of the market.

Where is the market expected to reach?

The Jeans market is expected to touch GBP2.1 billion by 2012 as per Miss Ihekweazu of Mintel . She also says “With some jeans costing around the same as a cup of coffee, many more people can afford to have several pairs of jeans.” and hence the increase is further expected.

But will the prices of Jeans keep on going down?
The jeans sales are getting polarised between Discounted Jeans and the High Street Jeans with a very significant difference in prices among them. This polarisation is expected to continue . However, how much lower the prices can go further ? I don’t think it can be too much. ALready the Discounted Jeans are selling at prices which leave hardly anthing for the Manufacturer or Retailer. Asda is selling Jeans at GBP2.99.. It will be really difficult to better these prices..

Anyway, lets stay tuned and watch..

  • Asda(UK) slashes prices of Jeans to GBP2.50

The existing price of jeans in George department of ASDA – at GBP 3/ – were already quite low and now they have reduced them further to GBP 5 for two pairs ie GBP 2.5/pair.. Its incredible how ASDA can sell jeans at these prices..It has previously faced criticism from the anti-poverty group over the working conditions of workers in Bangladesh. However, it has been able to fend them off..
If we look at the selling price of these jeans, it is very difficult to see how the costings can work out at these levels.Lets see a hypothetical breakdown
Freight cost : about 10 pence per jeans.
Profit (which I think is the minimum Asda must be keeping) – 20% on sales – 50 pence.
Storage and other costs : about 10 pence. Total 70 pence. These are the barebone expenses I am considering and the actuals will be higher.
So it would mean that the exporter from Bangladesh would be exporting at about GBP 1.80 which is about USD 2.50.. Normally a jeans uses a minimum of 1.2 meters of fabric and if we take the lowest current prices prevailing in the market in Bangladesh – about USD 1.40/m (for 13.75oz) then the cost of the fabric comes to about USD1.68.. So we have about USD 0.82 left for the Bangladesh garment factory to cover all its costs…

Anyway, its a good strategy by ASDA to get volume customers. Even if ASDA is not earning much on this product, it may be making up by more profits that come from sales of other products to the same customers.COOL….

  • Import of M/B Jeans from India and Bangladesh into EU

Its very interesting to compare the import figures for 6 years of Men/Boys Jeans into EU from two South-Asian countries -India and Bangladesh..First lets see the figures and then we will discuss the same

    YEAR .. INDIA .. BANGLADESH

    2000 .. 377718.. 11710979
    2001 .. 617787.. 18325115
    2002 .. 921928.. 21693769
    2003 .. 538237.. 29984007
    2004 .. 411354.. 39949584
    2005 .. 1599732.. 42292334
    2006 .. 3350670.. 52180749
    Total 7.81 million 112.29million

Its amazing to see how much ahead Bangladesh is in terms of exports of M/B Jeans to EU. In the year 2000, Bangladesh exported about 11.7 million pieces of jeans . This figure is far above the figure of export of jeans from India in the year 2006 !! – which is 3.3million..
The total exports from Bangladesh from the year 2000 to 2006 have been about 112 million pieces whereas the total from India is about 7.8 million..Though we can understand the period till 2004 when the quota restricted the exports from India . However, the period after that shows that : 1) India is not probably competitive when compared to Bangladesh and is unable to get the volume orders. 2)The infrastructure required for this volume of exports is still not available in India..

It will probably take another 4-5 years by which India will come somewhere close to Bangladesh in terms of exports of Jeans to EU …

  • VF to push value denimwear in India through retailers

VF Corp., through its JV VF-Arvind Brands, wants to be a major player in the value jeans segment in India through its value brands like Hero and Riders . To this end, it is aiming to tie up with the various important retailers in India including Wal-Mart .
VF had been more focused on the premium segment of the market through its brands – Wrangler and Lee – but realised the importance of the value segment . Its main competitor – Levi Strauss – had also realised the same and sold its Signature brand through Wal-Mart (among other retailers).

As Reported by Economic Times , the total size of the Jeans market in India is about 40-45 million pairs of denim and out of which 44 million pairs are in the value segment(Less than Rs 1000).
Though I agree with the % of value segment , I feel that the total size of the market of Jeans in India is much bigger. Denim, which used to be mainly an export item, is currently mainly a product for domestic sale (apart from some sale to garment exporters).
I am running out of time and will write more about this shortly.

  • Total market for denim fabrics in the US

The denim market in the US has been shrinking given the closure of many factories of both Denim Fabrics and the Garments due to high cost of production. The factories in US have not been able to bear the onslaught of the imports of cheaper garments from the Asian countries and have been closing down or relocating.
What is the total market of Denim Fabrics in the USA?
The total market for the fabric consists of the DOMESTIC PRODUCTION + IMPORTS of Denim(exports are negligible and have not been considered).
The figures below will give a very good idea of the trend of the market for the fabrics in the US – which is obviously southwards .

We can clearly see that the production has fallen more than 60% from 468 million mtrs since the year 2000 to about 187 million mtrs in 2006.To put it into perspective, the total production of denim fabrics in India is about 440 million mtrs. The imports have fallen from 89 million mtrs in 2000 to only 29 million mtrs in 2006. The total market has also gone down by about 60% to 216 million mtrs. However, one interesting fact to notice is that the share of the domestic mills in the total market is almost constant all these years - about 85% . Though already known, I would like to again mention that still US is the biggest market in the world in terms of consumption of Denim Apparel ( though it is imported in apparel form).

  • LeeCooper(India)Spring/Summer’07 Collection launched

Feelings and Moods of 1968 seems to be the theme on which the S/S’07 Jeans collection of Lee Cooper is based. Lee Cooper’s has drawn inspiration from its own archive of ’68 apart from the fashions, culture and music of that time.

The fabrics used are mainly ‘Authentic Ring, Shrink to fit denims, Chinos etc and style is mainly 5 pocket.
Well, authentic ring denims have been the flavour of most of the brands and this flavour is expected to continue for some more time.

  • Denim company in India best in product development?

There are  a large number of denim mills in India – more than 22. Some of them are quite old – like Arvind – while many of them have started operations in the couple of years.

The success of a denim company greatly depends on the kind of product development that it does. Each mill has its own special products and cater to different segments of the market.

There are varying views regarding the quality of developments of different companies.
I think, it would be good if we can place this question to the Denim Industry and see the results.

Evisu – the premium Japanese denim brand , is to open its first store in North America later this summer.
Evisu is quite popular and has sort of cult status in US and it was logical that they encash this status.
The store will be given a Japanese touch with films from Japan being filmed and the option to buyers to personalise their jeans by hand painting.
