  • Arvind plans to add more VF brands

VF Arvind brand – the JV between Arvind and VF (the USD 7 billion apparel giant) seems to be strenthening with new brands from the VF stable being added .
In India, VF Arvind brands has Lee and Wrangler under premium; Kipling, Nautica as high lux; the just launched Hero denim as jeans for mass; and between economy to premium is JanSport backpackers.

Among the new additions, Riders, the economy jeans brand, will be there(another economy jeans brand?)
The North Face TNF is dubbed one of “the coolest brands in the world”will retail via separate TNF outlets.
Vans, a casual luxury shoe brand, will also step in.
Eastpack, the backpack brand, will come in to the joy of many 16-18 year olds.
Arvind also opened the sixth store of Nautica – the brand supposed to be associated with high spirited people – in Mumbai. There are plans afoot to add another 12-13 stores in this year taking the total to 20.

The number of brands that Arvind (as a group) is handling is increasing by the day and it reflects on their expertise in this field. However, probably there needs to be some level at which Arvind will need to stop since the brands may be competing/conflicting with each other in the market esp when they are adding different brands in the same segment.
And now with Arvind planning to revive their FLYING MACHINE jeans brand , it will be very important for them to make a success of the same – hence energies and focus would be requried towards this end also.

  • Denim imports into EU from India (2000-2006)

EU has always been an important market for the exporters of Denim Fabrics from India. The denim exports have seen many good days when the volumes and prices were good and other times when the prices and volumes have not been so good.

Lets analyze the years from 2000 to 2006 and see how India has been doing in terms of exports of denim into EU.
The data below shows the imports of denim into EU15 and EU25 separately . It can be easily seen tha the best year for exports of denim into EU from India was 2001 and the worst has been 2006.

    Some clear trends emerge :
a)The year 2001 was the best in terms of volumes of exports.
b)Year 2002 was the best in terms of prices
c)Prices have improved in 2005 and 2006 but the volumes have gone down - the reason is the reduced exports of basic fabrics and increase in fabrics like Ring Spun etc which are costly. However, they are not giving volumes to India since countries like Turkey and Brazil are capturing the same.
One more thing which clearly emerges is that EU IS NOT A VERY IMPORTANT MARKET FOR DIRECT EXPORTS OF DENIM esp as seen in the last two year's volumes. However, the EU still remains important because of important decision makers(buyers) of various brands sitting there, who may get their orders shipped outside of EU.

  • Shoes and more from Japanese denim?

Adidas has launched trainers ,hats and sportswear made from ‘Japanese Denim’ and the collection is called ‘Materials of the World’ . For Japan, they have used denim from Japan and will use materials from each country specifically for the collection of that country.. The famous ‘Selvedge Denim’ of Japan has been used for this collection (in Japan).

  • Patent on ‘Denim designs by laser scripting’?

Lasers have been used by denim people for quite a number of years now to give various designs to the denim fabric.
Hence, I was a little surprised when I saw that a US patent has been awarded for ‘Denim Designs by laser scripting’ which covers designs on Denim Fabric and Garments through laser.

Though laser designs on the denim rolls have been used much lesser than designs on denim garments, there are possibilities to use this method to give mass scale productions with exactly similar designs.

I would however await the invention of the machine which can give all the effects (that are seen on jeans) without using any chemicals or water .. WOuld it not be nice to create the various distress effects as per your choice on a raw denim jeans or to create a ‘Seam Effect’ on your jeans right in a neighbourhood store and not to worry about cutting the length of the jeans??

  • Patents for Denim fabric and Jeans

For those interested in knowing what can be the next big thing in Denim/Jeans, keep a watch on the patents being awarded in this space..

  • Raymonds fabrics to be marketed through Reliance Retail?

Raymonds Denim Division seems to have concluded talks with Reliance Retail for selling its DENIM FABRICS through the Reliance Retail Stores. The first of these stores is expected to start in Ahmedabad shortly.
About 12-15 years ago, denim in India used to be mainly bought by buyers in the form of fabric and was stitched by the local tailors and then put on by the users . The garment could not get the Industrial Washing treatment, and the effect was primarily generated by ‘SOAPS AND SUN’.

I am not really sure whether Raymonds is planning to revive the concept of selling denim in the form of fabrics again.. If yes, then it remains to be seen how the users -primarily the young generation- takes it as they are getting used to a variety of washing, embroidery, embellishment and other effects on their denims.

Personally , I think, it may not be too much useful if there is no additional tools for creating effects on the denim are given to the users as plain denim is hardly worn these days..

Update : Reliance Retail does not seem to have been growing so well. It would do Raymonds some good , if they selected some other retail partner

  • EFS System installed by three denim mills

Cone Denim (in Jiaxing,China),Central Textiles(Hong kong) and Lanyan Group(China) have installed the Electronic Fibre Selection System from Cotton Incorporated. This computer software technology driven system aims to optimize the quality and consistency of the cotton fibre – meant to help in producing high quality yarns .
Also, this helps the American Cotton Exporters as more American Cotton is expected to be used by mills using the EFS system.
Well its a good move by the Cotton Inc. to increase its Cotton exports.
Let’s wait and see how profitable wwill it be for the companies who have installed it ..

  • More of wide Legged Jeans

The wide legged jeans , especially from J Brand are being worn by more and more of celebrities .

Last couple of weeks have seen celebs like Naomi Campbell and Angela Basset , among others, have been seen wearing wide legged jeans.

    naomi-campbell-j-brand.jpg

But can’t really understand whether the ladies are really comfortable in these wide legged jeans. But who cares – its the Fashion that matters..

  • High waisted jeans – more celebs wearing it

As I mentioned one of my previous posts, high-waisted jeans seem to be becoming popular with the celebrities. However, the difference is that while some of them have gone for a combination of High Waist Jeans with wide legs, others have gone for Skinny High Waist jeans.
Jennifer Lopez has been spotted with a skinny jeans in high waist(see below)

I personally prefer the skinny to the wide legged ones as wide legged ones are too difficult to carry with grace and very few women can do it.

  • Colored Jeans making a comeback this summers?

Feedback from many quarters indicate that Colored Jeans maybe a hot rage in US this summers.
Many brands have added Colored Jeans to their collections and some of them are even offering buyers to dye their own jeans !
The Hundreds is offering buyers to buy a White Jeans and buy a specific dye from the drugstores and dye the jeans at home..

I think, the concept is cool since it enables one to dye the jeans in own favourite color and that too , at your own home..
