UPCYCLING X 55DSL Collection By DIESEL

Diesel has recently announced – DIESEL UPCYCLING FOR, a new series of collections , which focus on a commitment to a more sustainable future through upcycling in production and adapting to a changing world. According to Diesel , the word UPCYCLING refers to the process of ‘Transforming Existing Products’ , Waste Material, and Deadstock into new products, while reducing the consumption of raw materials and decreasing the energy use , air and water pollution , and greenhouse gas emission. Essentially , it is the creation of something new by using what they already have . However, it seems the upcycled products are more expensive than the regular ones – of course, more effort is required to create them.

Here are some of our favorite picks from the collection.

    D-55PARKA – Upcycled Parka in denim fabric$748.00

This parka is crafted from strips of existing denim, cut and sewn together to create a totally new fabric. The jacket is enriched with a tonal band on the front and contrasting colored details under the sleeves.

TOP COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO GUATEMALA

In the year of 2019 till August, Guatemal has imported more than 8 million sqm of denim fabrics. CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to Guatemala with a total volume of about 5.8 million sqm at an average price of USD 0.6/sqm.

Some of the  prices  look highly undervalued and underquoted as there is a trend of not giving the full price to avoid duties. So we cannot take these prices as representative of actual prices.

India is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported around 1.7 million  sqm of denim fabric at an average price of USD 0.3/sqm. USA, Mexico etc. are other countries which contributed the rest 5% of the total import of denim fabric of Guatemala respectively.Pakistan exported the fabrics at the highest average price of 3.3 USD/SQM and India at the cheapest average Price

(Note: this data has been captured from various govt organizations including customs. the actual imports are likely to be higher than this figure .)

  • A Talk Over PeppinoPeppino Denim Capsule Collection

A Talk Over PeppinoPeppino Denim Capsule Collection

Simona Testucci – an accomplished designer having worked in different reputed brands – had brought out her denim brand PEPPINOPEPPINO some time back. Looking at the latest capsule collection we were drawn towards philosophy of the brand with all the women’s denim styles inspired by original workwear and military pieces. And we thought it was time to talk to her and bring this collection for our readers.

So as you read further  below, you will find excerpts of our talk with her as well as looks from her collection flowing side by side. This collection is a selection of vintage pieces that were made for real life, durability and work. The talented pattern Alessio Ber translated them into perfect and timeless denim silhouettes.

    Q. Hi Simona, first of all, the most obvious question. Why this unique name PeppinoPeppino ?

A lot of people asked me what is the origin of the name PeppinoPeppino. Well, when I created my Instagram account (PeppinoPeppino Magazine), I was living in Berlin. I was walking in the Mitte, thinking about a name that had an Italian flavour, sounding ironic and funny and, for some inexplicable reasons, PeppinoPeppino came up

    Q. You are a well known designer working in large corporate. What prompted you to launch your own label.
I have been working in the fashion business for almost 20 years. I covered all the roles, from sales assistant, to visual merchandiser, buyer and then product manager, developing a 360 degrees experience.
In March 2015 I founded PeppinoPeppino Magazine, an Instagram account focused on denim, vintage workwear and Japanese aesthetic. Through that, I have been able to gather a group of faithful followers that understand and appreciate the style of my posts and feeds. I have wanted to create my own denim brand since I started working in the industry. It took me a while but I finally managed to do it. I launched the first PeppinoPeppino capsule at Pitti last year and I am very proud of it.
I couldn’t have been luckier to collaborate with Alessio Berto. He is an incredibly talented pattern maker, able to translate my ideas into perfect silhouettes. He has become also a friend and mentor.
I started PeppinoPeppino because I felt there was a void in the market and felt I could address that void. The denim market is definitely saturated. However, I do believe that there is still so much to explore especially when it comes to shapes and fit

    TYPE 10

50’s tailored vintage menswear pants remade in soft broken twill 100% cotton. Relaxed and easy to wear fit, with frontal double pleats and adjustable back buckle. Timeless styling .

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 11

Vintage vest remade in soft broken twill 100% cotton. A tailored piece with a one-of-a-kind sensibility and character, featuring the classic adjustable back buckle.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

Q.The capsule looks so interesting with wonderful silhouettes . You have used inspiration from workwear and military to create women denims. Tell us more about it.
I have always been fascinated by authentic craftsmanship and vintage clothing (especially military and workwear).  Nothing makes me more emotional than a pair of old denim pants or a nice piece of vintage workwear. On top of that I have been a denim lover since I finished college. It came out pretty natural to put together those two elements into a denim line.
All the PeppinoPeppino styles are freely inspired by original workwear and military pants/jackets, featuring the same volumes and details. The philosophy of the brand is combining denim and vintage pieces that were made for real life, durability and work. From FA20 the brand is dual gender, having some styles available also in men’s sizes.
What the denim market currently lacks is “emotion”. The majority of denim brands, from premium to high street, offer the same things, in terms of washes and fits, no matter how much of the cost of the product is. On the other hand, the luxury brands offer super expensive and fashionable styles, not easy to wear in your every day life.
If you asked me if I will ever do a five pockets skinny fits in power stretch fabric, I would say no. This is not the philosophy of the brand. I would never do anything that I wouldn’t wear, PeppinoPeppino denim fully represents my style. In this regard I don’t want to compromise. I hope customers will embrace this untraditional and anti-fashion way of interpreting and wearing denim.

I hope that PeppinoPeppino will be seen as a hit of freshness and newness in the current denim market.

    TYPE 12

PeppinoPeppino denim reinterprets the iconic US Navy deck jacket. A unique silhouette in broken twill 100% cotton, that becomes a cozy, oversize, cardigan. Utility frontal patch pockets with buttons closure.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 13

Overalls have become a PeppinoPeppino denim’s staple. Type 13 has been inspired by an authentic vintage French workwear overall, with the same volumes and details. The silhouette is intentionally oversize and it is made in 100% cotton Italian denim. Adjustable straps.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 14

Military chino in 100% cotton Italian selvedge denim. Easy and commercial silhouette. Mid rise, straight leg, with single frontal pleat and back flap pockets. Unusual and playful “half selvedge” finishing.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    Q. All your pieces are made in Italy. Do you think this makes a big difference to your brand. What about the fabrics, are they also from Italy.

All the garments are made in Italy, using Italian and Turkish fabrics (Candiani, Berto and Isko), accessories are YKK, with 1950’s replica zippers made by YKK Japan. I am Italian and the “made in Italy” is still, in my opinion, an additional value. I am not interested in easy margins, relocating the production abroad. I want to offer to my customers timeless and high quality products that last for a long time and get better and better with every day wear.

    TYPE 15

Rugged, vintage wool military cargo pants found in an army surplus store have been faithfully remade in 100% cotton Italian denim. Easy to wear fit, slightly cropped as per the original one, with button closure at the bottom hem.

PeppinoPeppino Denim Launches Its 2nd Denim Capsule

    TYPE 16

Collarless denim jacket in 100% cotton Italian denim. Like an old vintage denim trucker, this piece features frontal pleats and authentic round bartacks. A line silhouette for a more feminine appeal.

Ethiopia Jeans Exports-November and December 2019

For years now, Ethiopia has been growing rapidly with a long term goal to position itself as the world’s next big destination for textile and fashion production. With an array of many duty free incentives and infrastructure developments – like the freshly built industrial parks for garment manufacturing – the country in over the past years has opened doors for international apparel brands like H&M, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger to establish factories for producing a low-cost garment.

The country has plans to achieve the target of apparel exports to a total of $30 billion a year in the coming years. However the minimum wage is still a matter of grave concern, it is the lowest comparing the other garment manufacturing hubs.

According to the reports, the average wage of garment workers is as low as $26, which is substantially lower than the other low paying countries including Myanmar and Bangladesh.

In this report, we’ve done the analysis of Jeans Exports From Ethiopia during November and December 2019 and our analysis focuses on three fundamentals :

    • Value Of Jeans Exported
    • Top Export Destinations
    • Leading Buyers
    • Leading Suppliers

Value Of Jeans Exported And The Exporting Destinations

Ethiopia is still a country which is developing slowly and the data generation is not still complete with all shipments not being captured. . However, from the available data we can see that during Nov and Dec’19, Jeans valued $3.83 million was exported out of which major portion to the tune of 80% exported to the USA. This number looks very small but we need to remember that Ethiopia will need some time to get its data in full order. We can only work on the figures currently available.

Italy was the second largest importer and imported 8% of the Jeans during the same period. Other countries that imported jeans from Ethiopia include Spain, Malaysia, Italy, and Canada.

EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To WORLD During 2017 – 2019

The exports of denim fabric to the World by EU has been decreasing since last  3 years . This is only to be expected as there are very few mills left in EU as many have closed down. Against a volume of about 39 million sq mtrs in 2017, only about 33 million sq mtrs were exproted in 2019 . The price remained almost the same at about Euro 3.83 – 3.90/ sq mtr.

    Country Wise Exports

Out of the total exports of EU fabrics, we further anaylze the important markets they exported to and to understand if some markets are growing for EU fabrics.

    Exports to COLOMBIA During 2017 – 2019

The denim fabric exports by EU to COLOMBIA has seen a rise of 9.6% from 2017 to 2018 but dropped significantly in 2019. The total fabric exported was 2.5 lakhs sqm at an average price of 4.10 Euro/sqm in the year 2019. The average price at which the denim was exported in 2018 was 3.52 euro/sqm. Thus there is wide change in both quantities and prices for exports to this market. Colombia has been growing as a market and with many global companies invading the market, the prices too slashed down and EU companies found it more difficult to compete.

EU Exports Of Denim Fabric To TUNISIA During 2017 – 2019

Tunisia is the largest export destination for EU fabrics for conversion to garments for reexport and the figures say so. However, inspite of it being so, the volumes to Tunisia too have fallen in last 3 years. We can see a fall of about 20% in 2019 over 2017 figures with prices also taking a nosedive. Around 8 % fall in the export can be seen from previous years.

Also Turkey has its own local brands who buy EU fabrics for their high end collections. The exports by EU in TURKEY also declined from the past 3 years but the fall in the export was less in 2019 as compared to 2018. The export reduced to 22.3 % from 2017 to 2018 and the reduction was 9% in 2019 as compared to the previous year. The Toxic Avenger : Denim Capsule By Naked & Famous

Naked & Famous has come up with funky new pieces this season. The pop-art styled logo of the brand depicted by “ideal blond” represents  a mass culture. As per their website, they aim to poke fun at “Hollywood”and “Glamour” brands that sell jeans for $300 and up solely because they are celebrity endorsed, and not because they are higher quality. The brand sets itself apart by using satire to promote some high quality denims !

The brand has collaborated with Troma Entertainment with the theme of an 80s B-movie satirical superhero franchise – The Avenger – to launch the latest collection with comic style art and cartoons highlighted on the denim.

    https://youtu.be/eoAGsmLHrBw

The collection consists of the Trucker Jacket and Deformed Denim. The cartoons and logos look beautifully trendy on denim . The denim fabric has been constructed in three different twills :  left-hand twill,  right-hand twill, and a broken twill. The yarn has been used with a desire to give the denim a texture that represents the The Toxic Avenger’s skin. The toxic-green tinted interior yarns serve to transform the wearer into a “doer of good, and brutal mauler of evil” according to the brand. The scenes from the comic book are screen printed on the pink colored pocket bags. “ I’ve been Tromatised ” embriodery looks very attractive on the green coloured seal of The Toxic Avenger on the rear chenille patch of the denim jacket. Not only the unique patterns and textures, the entire collection is made from organic cotton.

Denim Fabric Export From India : Jan 2020 | Denimsandjeans

On the whole, the export scene of Indian denim fabrics is improving since there is huge pressure in domestic market and companies are looking overseas seriously . Many companies who were mainly domestic sellers turned to exports aggresively. We will see this trend to continue with higher vigour in this year – the China corona factor is expected to provide further impetus as global buyers look for alternative sources for their fabrics.

  • True Religion X Jaffa Saba

    True Religion X Jaffa Saba

Sustainability is at the heart of the True Religion X Jaffa collaboration. True Religion have launched their bespoke couture denim collection in collaboration with the artist,  Jaffa Saba.  The London-based DIY upcycler’s Instagram account is loaded with offbeat designs that he’s crafted out of scraps from world’s famous denim labels, as well as other items of cobbled-together clothing and accessories. The limited-edition collection exhibits products created using recycled denim which consists of factory defects and overstock from previous seasons to refashioning them into meaningful garments––all with the intention to rework and rethink the way denim is worn and used.

The True Religion X Jaffa Saba collection is displayed exclusively at Selfridges. Prices range from £99-399.

    denimsandjeans

Jaffa, who is known for his unusual style, seemed to be a perfection of redesigning discarded, unused denim into fashionable denim. He skillfully incorporates themes of imperfection. The collection will feature jackets, denim jeans, bucket hats, shorts, samurai bomber hats, slides, tote bags, and lighters.

    denimsandjeans

“We were blown away by Jaffa’s creativity and attention to detail, which is what we embody as a brand. He’d already created some bespoke True Religion pieces from his own wardrobe, and after meeting, we were all buzzing about a collaboration . Jaffa’s understanding of the TR DNA, taking dead stock and factory damaged “Super Ts” and reworking them into new original one-off pieces excited us. We’re also excited to be working alongside our launch partner, Selfridges, who has been so supportive over the last 14 years.” – Matt Claydon

“After I met with Matt and the TR team, I immediately started to execute what I had in my mind – playing with the True Religion Blueprint- taking leftovers and recreating new functional innovative pieces – this is all just a bit of fun.” – Jaffa

He also answered when asked why he rated True Religion that much “True Religion, because its OG. They are the ones that pioneered denim within hip-hop culture. I’m naturally drawn to their aesthetic out of all the older denim brands. They’re fire. I f**k with it. Everything I do, make, film, dicatate is just because I f**k with it. I just wanna make stuff into physical products through my lens”.
