  • Clothing Stores Shutting Down. What is the road ahead now?

Clothing Stores Shutting Down. What is the road ahead now?

The cases of COVID 19 has been rising exponentially and now the USA is at the global top in number of cases and five countries from Europe are in the Top 10 list now. In the last one week, as the testing went on war level, the confirmed cases started to gallop and it seems this is not going to end too soon even withPresident Trump claiming to stop this within 15 days.

In 2019, there were many apparel retailers that closed their stores in the USA and filed for bankruptcy for business reasons. The year 2020 is going to be much more difficult with even the most financially sound retailers stretched because of most stores closed and mounting expenses.

    Credit: GettyImages

The store closure ( over 47,000 in US) creates a lot of uncertainty in the supply chain around the world. It is feared that millions will lose jobs as factories close down due to cancelled orders, pilling inventories and resultant problems.

Most of the suppliers located in Bangladesh, India, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Africa have been asked to hold the shipment and not to cut fabrics to complete the orders, the payment of previous shipments are also uncertain which may add more panic to the existing supply chain.

“We apologize that over the next two weeks, there will be delays on orders and customer service requests. We ask for your understanding and patience,” Patagonia’s CEO and president Rose Marcario wrote in a statement.

National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) President and CEO Kim Glas expressed his worry and said,

“The coronavirus has impacted Asian textile and apparel manufacturing productivity and output, and our concerns lie with the affected companies and workers during this terrible crisis.

We’ve listed some of the major apparel retailers who have announced the temporary shutdown of their stores around the country

    CHANEL

The Italian luxury fashion retailer has announced closing all stores in the USA w.e.f March 16 for two weeks. The payment to the workers will not be halted, the company said in a statement.

    GAP Inc

The company has made a decision to close all the stores located in North America w.e.f March 19 for the next two weeks.

“Our focus remains on supporting the health and livelihood of our employees while caring for our customers and communities,” said Sonia Syngal, incoming chief executive officer of Gap, Inc.

    H&M

On March 17, H&M in a statement said they are closing all stores in North America until April 2. However, their online shop will remain functional.

    Inditex

All 3785 stores of brands that fall under INDITEX in 39 markets will remain closed.

    Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch closed all stores outside of the Asian-Pacific region for two weeks.

    Guess Inc.

Leading denim retailer has announced to temporarily close all of its North American stores from March 17. Guess previously closed stores in China and Europe because of the coronavirus outbreak.

    Levi Strauss & Co.

Levis has also decided to close all their stores in North America until further notice. The retailer has assured the payment to all their store associates irrespective of this shutting down.

    American Eagle Outfitters

A&E temporarily closed all North American stores w.e.f March 17. The retailer has also pledged to set up a relief fund to help affected employees

“I recognize the days ahead will be challenging, but we remain true to the very heart of our purpose — optimism,” Jay Schottenstein, executive chairman of the board and chief executive officer of American Eagle Outfitters, said in a statement.

    PVH Corp.

All the brands of PVH including Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, True&Co. and Speedo, among others, announced the shutdown in all North American and European retail locations w.e.f March 17

    Uniqlo

The company closed all 50 stores in the U.S. until further notice, however, the e-commerce business will remain open.

    VF Corp

Stores of all brands which come under parent VF Corp. would be closed until April 5 in the North American region. The company said employees will continue to receive full pay and benefits during this time.

Other apparel retailers that announced to close the stores temporarily include J Crew, Target, Macy, Patagonia, and Perry Ellis.

After the USA and Europe, India has also been locked down for 21 days to prevent the further outbreak of COVID19, India has over 800 confirmed cases of Covid 19 and 20 deaths so far.

In response to the lockdown, all major retailers announced the temporary shutdown of their retail shops in India, which include retailers like H&M, Zara, Uniqlo, Arvind and Shoppers Stop.

Southern region of India which includes Tirupur and Karnataka seemed to have been badly affected by this. Approx 34% of exports from Tirupur goes to the USA and 36% to Europe. Tirupur has over 10000 factories which produce approx $4 billion worth apparels for export, the total size of the apparel export business of India is USD 17 billion.

“In such difficult times, we have advised our members to cooperate with buyers by showing more flexibility toward deliveries, etc.,” said A. Sakthivel, chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council. “We are hoping that global brands will not cancel orders, but rather treat them as delays. Otherwise, the livelihood of thousands of workers will be affected.”

Most of the retailers around the globe assured the on-time salary to their employees however as far as the SUPPLIERS are concerned, no clarification has been issued yet. The retailers are prioritizing and it seems that first priority will always be employees and local partners. International supply chain partners may get the last preference.

    Bangladesh
In a major worry, BEGMA president Ms. Rubana Huq announced the cancellation of a huge number of orders in Bangladesh and the lives of over 4 million workers would be affected drastically.  It seems that Over $2 billion of orders in Bangladesh were cancelled and many of the orders were kept on hold. As this article goes on, it is understood that more orders are getting cancelled.

In summary, the global situation is extremely worrisome. Country after country is getting affected and the virus seems to be currently unstoppable. In such a situation, the entire mankind needs to stand together and beat this virus. It will be important to hold the hands of people below us in the chain to ensure they don’t fall down. With little humanity and concern, we will overcome this crisis soon – God Willing.

  • COVID 19 and Its Impact On Textile and Apparel

COVID 19 and Its Impact On Textile and Apparel

The unprecedented outbreak of deadly COVID19 has shaken the entire globe in the last few weeks and has almost paused most business activities including manufacturing, services and retail.  Textile and Apparel industry has been also hard hit due to Covid 19 badly.

In the month of December, when many reports suggested the detection of COVID19 in China, the world didn’t seem that serious, but as the time passed and everyone learnt about this contagious virus, global leaders started taking action – a little too late. It is sad to see that most of the nations could not understand the enormity and gravity of the situation and kept on delaying important decisions on social distancing to save the economy.  But with these delayed actions , thousands of lives are being lost and the economy is bleeding profusely. Most governments are so enamored of keeping economy before people that they have hurt both .

Looking at our industry , it is facing probably the toughest time ever in last 100 years. Even the wars did not make such an impact what we can see now  with major global retailers closing down their stores and cancelling orders.

The movement has been restricted, social distancing has been imposed and enforced, stock exchanges are plunging, factories are getting closed, orders are either being canceled or being postponed, are we heading towards the biggest global recession?

COVID 19 and Its Impact On Textile and Apparel | Denimsandjeans

A lot of fashion shows and exhibitions have been either canceled or postponed in the past few days, which may lead to delays in making sourcing decisions. The delivery of upcoming Spring Season and Autumn-Winter has been already delayed due to the disruptions  and post the travel restriction, the delay may add some more months or weeks.

In these challenging times, we thought to bring some recent developments in the textile and apparel industry which took place due to the outbreak of COVID 19.

China, which happened to be the epicenter of the outbreak, is also one of the biggest consumers and also the suppliers of clothing and textile. From January 2020, many global brands started to restrict its operation which later converted into complete shutdowns. Here is how the outbreak of COVID 19 impacted the sales of apparel around the world.

    1. Gap Inc provisioned $100 million sales hit for Quarter 1
    2. Adidas is expecting sales to drop by up to $1.13bn in Greater China in the first quarter.
    3. Ralph Lauren has provisioned the sales drop of up to US$70m for Q4 2019-20
    4. PVH Corp has temporarily closed the majority of its Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger stores in China.
    5. Under Armour is expecting a sales hit of up to $60m on first-quarter sales in the APAC region. 6. VF Corp says about 60% of its owned and partner stores in China have been temporarily closed.
    6. Uniqlo closed 225 stores in mainland China to limit the outbreak intially ,however they have opened all their stores located outside the Whuan last week.
    7. The company, which owns Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo, has closed 150 stores in China and projects its revenues in the next quarter will drop by $100 million.

COVID 19 and Its Impact On Textile and Apparel | Denimsandjeans

The situation is now improving in China and the government has announced to lift all kinds of ban from Whuan w.e.f April 8th. Theaters and other public transports are gradually resuming and as the time passes, things will be recovered rapidly.

Hermès International CEO Axel Dumas said he foresees “potential normalization” of operations with seven of its 11 stores in China beginning to resume operations.

After China, the invasive and insidious COVID 19 imploded in the month of March in Europe and Iran followed by the USA. The scale of the outbreak has been colossal and forced the countries to enforce complete lockdown and social distancing which forced many buyers to either cancel orders or postpone them till further notice. Bangladesh and Pakistan – two of the large apparel exporters are facing the toughest times with most of their European orders getting cancelled . Bangladesh is particularly facing this huge problem.

Rubana Huq, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association appealed to buyers not to cancel their orders in Bangladesh.

“Most brands are putting the orders indefinitely on hold and canceling. They are also canceling orders that are scheduled to be shipped now. For them it’s a question of the survival of the businesses, for us it’s the survival of our 4.1 million workers,” she says.

    • The shutdown of major buying regions including the USA, Europe and some countries in SEA is actually putting at risk the livelihoods of garment workers, who are already some of the most vulnerable workers in the global economy.
    • Most of the fashion stores in the USA and Europe are either closed or operating for limited hours which led to a drastic fall in the clothing demands as the households have paused their spending on non-essential things.

COVID 19 and Its Impact On Textile and Apparel | Denimsandjeans

Janne Einola,  H&M India , in his linked post wrote about closing all stores in India .

“Right now we’re facing a situation that no one could really prepare for. In these times of uncertainty, we’re following the advice from the government and local authorities. We’re adapting to ever-changing situations, and are truly grateful to have fantastic teams collaborating to support our customers, colleagues, and partners across India.
In response to the prevention and control of the disease outbreak, we are closing all the H&M stores across India, in shopping malls and street locations till 31st March 2020. Please stay safe and take care of one another, wherever you are”.

“The info from the brands is more like tip of the iceberg. The deluge is on the way and we all need to be prepared for it. We need to be stronger and we need to find ways to support each other as much as possible. This bad phase will pass but we will all need each other after this. Hoping and praying that we all come out of this situation with minimum damage ” – Sandeep Agarwal

How Fashion Giants Are Contributing In A Fight Against COVID 19

In these challenging times, it is imperative that the world comes together and we try to help each others. It is heartening to see instances of large corporations and brands reaching out to help the global community in battle  against COVID19.

Italy, one of the most favourite fashion destinations in the world, is in serious trouble due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. The country has reported over 63,000 cases of confirmed infections and over 6000 deaths in the past few weeks. Globally, over 400,000 cases have been reported so far out of which over 18,500 lost their lives. Other countries in Europe are facing increasing infections and the virus is spreading its tentacles around the world.

To support the government and to prevent the outbreak, the fashion industry emerged as one of the great contributors. Here is how some of the biggest names have contributed so far in this war . Though many of these contributions are not huge, we hope that these will increase in the coming days .

    LVMH

One of the leading luxury fashion retailers LVMH pledged USD 2.3 million to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation and last week, the company also announced that they will be manufacturing hand sanitizer at all of their production lines and will then donate these hand sanitizer to French health departments to fight the pandemic.

    MONCLER

    PRADA

Prada had donated two intensive care and resuscitation units each to the Vittore Buzzi, Sacco and San Raffaele hospitals in Milan. In addition to this , Prada Group said that it will produce some 110,000 masks and 80,000 medical overalls at least until April 6 and give them to health care professionals in Italy’s Tuscany region.

    VERSACE

The Italian fashion house had donated USD 143,400 to the Chinese Red Cross Foundation to help with the shortage of medical supplies in the country. Apart from this, Donatella Versace and Allegra Versace pledged to donate EURO 200,000 to the ICU of Milan’s San Raffele hospital.

    INDITEX

Inditex announced that they are going to start manufacturing hospital gowns at its production lines in Spain.

Other brands which have pledged to make protective medical clothing and kits include Kering, Coty, and L’Oréal.

    MICHAEL COSTELLO

LA based designer Michael Costello and his team are on work to manufacture 20,000 protective masks for health-care workers. Accroding to the brand, a cotton-nylon blend protective mask with upto 74% air filteraion efficiency has been designed by  Michael.

Many other brands and retailers are continuously giving in their contributions and we will keep on updating this on our site .

In these times of stress , the big and powerful have the biggest responsibility to help the public while all of us also need to do their bit to help the community as far as possible. These are testing times and we feel that many among us will come out with flying colors.

  • Sustainable Denim Collection By COS

    Sustainable Denim Collection By COS

Launched in 2007 COS is an abbreviation of “Collection of Style.” It is owned by fast-fashion giant H&M but operates independently. Since opening its first store in 2007 in London, COS has grown to 290 locations and 44 markets worldwide and online shopping is available in 19 of those markets. In a time of fast-fashion backlash, COS is in some way antithesis of H&M’s fast fashion as it aspires for longevity and its minimalist silhouettes and restrained color palettes. Staying power – that’s the mantra of COS- and its collections are designed keeping longevity and usability in mind. Sustainability is also one of the keywords thats in the DNA of the brand – though H&M is trying to replicate that in most of its brands.

COS has recently unveiled its new classic and sustainable range of denim workwear collection which is made from organic cotton and (as per them) without the use of Chemical pesticides.

There are no rivets used in this collection with the objective to make recycling process easier once they’ve reached the end of their useful life.

The collection includes slim, straight and wide curve workwear pieces, featuring double line stitching, patch pockets and turn-up detailing reinvent classic fits for men , however for women, it features innovative fits such as the essential tapered high-waist and mid-rise barrel leg jeans.

To celebrate and to mark the launch of this new sustainable initiative, COS had also launched a collaborative project at new Coal Drops store in London’s King’s Cross . Under this project, the idea of upcyling was  widely promoted by offering an extension to the lives of visitor’s denim with the help of alternation and repair.

Another 100% ? Recycled Jeans By Tommy Jeans

Developed with a vintage inspiration and earth-conscious mission, Tommy Introduces another 100% recycled denim styles with recycled elastane. Last year also they came out with a sustainable collection , but this one seems a step ahead of that.

This 100% recycled collection is a sampling of or most popular styles and has been styled from recycled cotton in a vintage wash. The collection pulls out the evergreen classic Tommy Jeans styles from the archive of nostalgia and redesigned with added sustainable flavor of 100% recycled cotton, thread and sustainable trims. Apart from these, the rivets are made from the recylced metal trimmings and the patches are from 100% recycled polyester.

“The innovative part of the fabrics we are using for this capsule consists in their mechanical recycling process and spinning process. This way we can achieve 100% cotton recycled fiber for the first time in the history without using any blend fiber, while keeping the same mechanical properties as a virgin cotton fabric,” says Nicolas Prophte, vice-president of Global Denim Center Excellence PVH Corp.

Tommy Jeans has also claimed that this entire collection consumed less water, less energy and low impact finishing techniques compared to any of their previous collections and hence this is the most sustainable denim collection that they ever produced.

The collection is available online for sale and the price ranges between $79-129.
