Sense the Substance of BIO INDIGO

Textile Industry is growing big day by day and so the level of pollution. Gradually, the industry has started sensing the urgency for reducing the pollution but the pace for the purpose is a bit slow. The industry has taken few initiatives like the shift from Potassium Permanganate, lesser water consumption, waterless dyeing, Better Cotton Initiative, etc. but still, Natural Dye is the segment that is not explored much yet. Natural dyes can be highly effective in reducing the level of pollution in the Textile Industry. Since emergence, they have normally passed all the certifications and standards without any modification.

Denim is one of the most preferred articles of style nowadays in the textile world. Blue jeans are most likely what one considers as far as denim is concerned, though usage of denim has gone past the usual pattern and colors. 10% of the whole cotton generation around the world transforms into denim. It indicates the huge demand and popularity of denim around the globe.

Synthetic Indigo is used to accomplish such huge demands for the denim. Usage of such high quantities of Synthetic Indigo is one of the major concern for sustainability. The textile industry is making praiseworthy efforts for flourishing sustainability but Synthetic Indigo is creating an alarming situation. There have been some attempts at reducing the impact of Indigo dyeing through various process controls etc. However, there can still be no comparison on Synthetic dye with the Natural one.

    Bio Indigo® By AMA Herbal

India based company AMA herbal has been producing Bio Indigo® for a long time and they have been at the forefront of pushing Natural Indigo dyes in the supply chain around the world . CEO and Owner Yawar Ali gave us detailed statistics on how the Natural Indigo (Bio Indigo®) can help in greatly reducing carbon footprint as compared to Synthetic Indigo. He stresses :

” If we start correcting our surroundings, the world will be a better place. Therefore, preferring a sustainable and environment-friendly dyeing option can be the game-changer. If you want to go for a sustainable dyeing option then you can go for Bio Indigo® . To reduce 10kg of Carbon Footprint from your production, you will require too many things and expenditure whereas if you shift consumption of 1kg of synthetic Indigo to Bio Indigo® you can reduce 10kg of CO2 in lesser expenses and lesser efforts. Bio Indigo® is made to counter the limitations Textile Industry is facing against constantly increasing pollution levels. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) report clearly states that consuming 1KG of Bio Indigo® results in a 10KG lesser Carbon footprint in comparison to Synthetic Indigo. So, if you are willing to craft a sustainable future, you need to sow its seeds today by initiating for the right. “

He gives statistics below to prove the difference :

Sense the Substance of BIO INDIGO®

AMA Herbal team feels very strongly that Bio Indigo®clip_image001[12] is an unexplored segment and shifting preferences towards Bio Indigoclip_image001[13], a greater contribution towards sustainability can be made. AMA team further gives an example of how the usage of Bio Indigo®clip_image001[14] can affect carbon emissions.

“World’s total denim manufacture is estimated at around 7.7 billion meters. Out of this total production let’s assume 90% of such manufacture (6.93 billion meters) is used for making blue denim. When we use Synthetic Indigo for dyeing such quantity then it will generate935.13 million kg of CO2 emission, which will certainly dent our ecosystem quite heavily. Now just presume if we are able to shift 20% of 6.93 billion meters from Synthetic Indigo to Bio Indigoclip_image001[15] then how it will impact the scenario? In that situation, we can reduce 36.14 million kg of CO2 emission. It will become a big change. That’s why we are mentioning that Bio Indigoclip_image001[16] is the segment in the textile industry which is not explored much yet. We are endeavoring hard to conquer all the odds and if we become able to shift our dyeing preferences from Synthetic Indigo to Bio Indigoclip_image001[17] it will be a sustainable revolution. It’s time for exploring the unexplored segment…Bio Indigoclip_image001[18]. “

“Our greener strategies will flourish sustainability if we initiate to shift towards Bio Indigoclip_image001[26]. We all are dedicated entities of the textile industry and endeavoring hard to make it fully sustainable. To bring the inspired change we need to adapt to such change first. Let’s shift to Bio Indigoclip_image001[27] for building greener and more sustainable future” –  Yawer Ali Shah

  • I Have To Contribute Up to My Last Minute : Adriano Goldschmied

I Have To Contribute Up to My Last Minute : Adriano Goldschmied

Perhaps the most well known and respected denim professional globally, the Godfather of Denim needs no introduction. We all know about his contributions to the industry in the last 5 decades and are constantly inspired by him . However, what is amazing to see is that ‘age is just a number for him‘ . He is probably more active at 76 than most of us who might be 2-3 decades younger than him. Not only is it his passion to work but a constant endeavor to make this industry and world a better place . In this quest he is leading a new venture – WISER WASH – which aims to change the way how we wash our jeans and the resultant impact on the environment. With Adriano bringing Wiser Wash to our Denimsandjeans Japan show , we were really keen to know more about it and to get insights into what he is doing and why .

Hi Adriano , once again welcome to Denimsandjeans. Its always an honor to speak to you and very excited to be a part of a conversation about a great  sustainability project – Wiser Wash –  that you are associated with. Please tell me a little about the journey of Wiser wash and how it was setup

It is a kind of Trio, Kevin Youn that was working with me when I started AG is the lucky inventor of the process. Fuat Gozacan understood the potential of the patent and with his company Wiser Globe, he created in Amsterdam Wiser Wash giving the structure, the vision how to operate and obviously putting the money to make it happen. I come in because I really love the wash that I consider a game changer because three main reason
    1) Makes superior washes, much better then traditional
    2) Because is sustainable more than any other.
    3) It is cheaper than traditional.

So we made together a very strong team where i develop new products  and research and I using my network to promote the business around the world. I am not a sale person, I promote things where I really believe in

No Stones, no chemicals and only a cup of water to wash a jeans ! How is it possible to wash this way ? What role do electrified water and Ozone gas play  in the whole process.

It is just a special use of the ozone machine and I confirm that in the decoloration process, that for others is Chlorine or potassium, we use 200ml of water when the others are using 15/20 liters of water

What kind of collaboration you had with Pepe Jeans and how it has affected them in terms of products , investments, innovation and long term gains.

We gave to them an exclusivity on the process for a certain period of time, we had a co-branding and we co-marketed the product. The most important thing is that we had a very good response from consumers that love the product that is nicer and more sustainable

You already have partner laundries in Turkey, Portugal  and USA. What do these laundries need to do to be a part of  Wiser Wash ? Does Wiser Wash give them licence to operate.

We own directly the laundry in LA that is our development center and Izmir that is for the training of staff of our partners and production too. In Portugal it is a partnership with Pizarro, The rest of the world the business model is a licence contract. Wiser wash partners need to share the vision and operate with sustainability as most important goal of the company and obviously they have to sign a license contract.

Are new partnerships coming  up in other regions ?

We already  signed important license deals with Arvind in India and PPJ in Vietnam and Elleti in Italy. I am just coming back from a trip in South America where we are expecting to sign in Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay. We are targeting partners in the near future in Mexico, Pakistan and China with more to come.

Sustainability always has a cost which is more than that of traditional methods of doing things . This gap is probably one of the reasons why many still find a strong urge to stick to the former. Does Wiser wash intend to reduce this gap and make sustainability more democratic ?

Yes, the big game changer is that Wiser Wash is much more competitive than a traditional wash as we save in water, stone and chemicals and the process is much more simple. This will be a booster for sustainability as is making sustainability affordable for everybody.

You keep going on so strongly ! Please do let us know about the other projects you are currently involved in.

I am very involved in many projects that are about innovation and new technologies in the textile segment. I am pushing to make progresses with Tictorium, Smart Indigo and the new dyeing indigo system. I am also a lot in the introduction of new fibers and collaboration with Lenzing. For what is regarding the design the major focus is to make the jean really circular.

Besides sustainability , what do you think are the other major factors which are affecting or will affect  the trend direction of denim .

It is true that sustainability , bio technology,  saving water and growing new fibers in a smart way are major points but they are just part of a bigger picture where right ethic in business, social respect, livable wages and safe working conditions are very important part of the equation. We have to fight for all of them.

What do you think about the Japanese market and where does it stand in the  plans for Wiser Wash .

Japanese market since long time is been leading the indigo and denim business blending the indigo Japanese culture and tradition with the American vintage. The result of this is an incredible and unique denim culture that is been inspiring us all the time and for sure will continue with the generations to come. However the global business is changing dramatically in term of distribution, numbers, innovation, technology and product development. This obviously has an impact also in Japan and requires that the domestic industry and the brands find new answers. Those answers are coming now also from a different method of work, they are not coming any more from one of few brands but from a â€œwork together  system where we share research and technology and we bring benefits to all. In particular the sustainability and circularity are a challenge that are in the hands of all of us. For many different reasons I feel that Japan is a little bit behind in the eco projects, So my approach bringing Wiser Wash to Japan is, as a first step, to show the potential of this technology applied to Japanese fabrics and brand and then to develop collaborations that can bring to the traditional strength of denim market a new important segment that will be the future for all of us.

Much younger persons than yourselves like me find it difficult to have the energy and passion that you have at age of 78 . Would you like to share some secrets so that it can inspire us to contribute more to the industry and society like yourselves  🙂

First, I am only 76 ! What is driving me is the passion for the business and that I  feel that I have to contribute up to my last minute to inspire people and make our world a better place for the new generations.

Import Of Jeans From China To EU Falls By 21% In 2019

China, the biggest exporter of apparel in the world has been going downhill when it comes to apparel exports – hit by various factors. Specially business with US has been affected due to the Trump effect. However, what is disturbing for the country is that its exports to EU have seen a big fall of over 21% in 2019 and expected to fall further. Countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam are eating away the share of China. This trend is likely to continue with Bangladesh getting stronger and also Vietnam getting FTA with EU which will enable it to ship duty free to Europe – within few years – with effect coming immediately to certain extent.  China is also actually aware of this and hence its massive investments in textile and apparel sector in Vietnam.

Lets check out in the report below to understand the import of Jeans by EU from China till September 2019.  However, all data for 2019 has been extrapolated till December 2019 for easy comparison.

Import Of Jeans By Major EU Countries

The imports of Denim apparel into EU from China for 2017 was 76.96 million pcs  with an average price of Euro 6.44/Pc which further increased by 10% to 84.93 million pcs at an average price of Euro 5.13/Pc in 2018. Import for the first nine months of 2019 is 50.10 million pcs and if the same trends continues the import are likely to  be 66.81 million pcs at the end of the year 2019. We see that China may actually export more jeans in 2018 to EU than it did in 2017. Thus if the projected figures are achieved, we will see about 66.81 million pcs of jeans being exported from China in 2019 against about 84.93 million pcs in 2018.

Germany which is one of the biggest buyers in EU, has been reducing the imports from China by every passing year. In 2017, the share in the import was 18% which reduced to 16% now , if you look at the import volumes,  Germany reduced its import from China by apporx. 4 million pcs of jeans . The other countries including France , UK and Spain have likely to import lesser jeans as compared to 2017 .  The trend of average price has been also very fluctuating and in most of the cases, increased however Italy and Netherlands’s average price are an exception to this.

QOQ is the theme of the 5th Edition of our Denimsandjeans Vietnam Show which is scheduled for May 28/29 at Riverside Palace, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. QOQ: Quality over Quantity. As the fashion world is changing, we are expecting a number of current trends to reverse.

The impact on the environment is forcing consumers and suppliers alike to rethink the FAST FASHION trend. Increasingly the consumers are thinking of buying lesser and more quality products and this will definitely impact the supply chain. Over a period of time, we will see that Quality will be preferred over Quantity and consumers may want to retain and use their apparel longer. So, we think it’s the right time to start thinking of all the aspects of QOQ. Hence the theme !!

Sustainability Efforts by LNJ – A Talk With Suketu Shah – Head LNJ Denim

LNJ denim is a part of the RSWM Ltd., the flagship company of LNJ Bhilwara Group.  The group exports its yarns and fabrics to over 78 countries around the world. Their denim division is headed by  CEO Mr Suketu Shah . We spoke to him about the various aspects of Indian denim industry , their company and specially their efforts in sustainability- where they a special focus . We bring a part of the discussion below :

    1. RSWM group has a long history in Indian textile industry. Please tell us about its background and how LNJ denim has developed as part of this group.

RSWM Limited, the flagship company of LNJ Bhilwara group, founded in 1961, is one of the largest textile manufacturers in the country, primarily producing the best quality of yarns like synthetic, blended, melange, cotton, speciality yarns and the value added – suiting and Denim fabric. The denim division “LNJ Denim” was established in 2007 and has a installed capacity of 25.0 MMA. Over the last 13 years since its existence, the denim division has earned good reputation among the international and domestic brands, as an innovative and quality denim fabric supplier.

    2. When did LNJ started to seriously think about working on sustainability and how did the process go ahead?

Sustainability initiative has always been within the radar of LNJ Denim since its existence. As a responsible corporate the group has been investing towards this initiative few being – garnetting machine for recycling used garments, wind/solar/hydro energy for running its processes to reduce carbon emissions. LNJ denim is a Zero Liquid Discharge with a robust ETP which helps in treating all the effluents & recycling the water, saving more than 486 Kilo litres of water per annum. Apart from these process/technology initiatives the product development team ( Referred as DIG – Denim Intelligence Group) effectively works with many leading brands in developing eco-friendly products using organic / BCI cotton or bio-degradable manmade fibres.

    3. ECO’ VERSE is the new sustainable collection that you have created. What is special about it and how does it address the 3 Rs REDUCE RECYCLE and REUSE?

Ecoverse is the sustainability part of our SS21 collection which has been created using products which are designed with various eco-friendly concepts.. There would be products using fibres like Hemp, Ecovero, Refibra, Livaeco which are generated using sustainable processes & are bio-degradable reducing load on the landfills. Few products are developed using the recycle poly made from pet bottles or recycle cotton fibre made from post consumer used garments. Also included are products made from Natural indigo.
An Interview With Mr Suketu Shah - Head–LNJ Denim ( Fabric)

    4. You mention that LNJ Is among the most innovative global denim companies. Why do you feel so?

LNJ with its strong marketing and design teams work very closely with many international and national level brands regularly on various innovative concepts & collections. With more than 60% of the capacity been sold to brands across the globe, the teams are well aligned & pushed for innovations 24*7.

    5. Indian industry has been going through a tough phase with oversupply and restrained demand affecting growth. How has LNJ come out over these times and how do you see the near future?

Yes looking at the unbalanced demand-supply ratio specially in denims, the industry has been going through a tough phase over the last 4 years. This was further accentuated by few policy modifications like demonetisation & later GST implementation which resulted in complete drought specially in domestic market. LNJ was no exception and like all other players struggled in these tough times. However with its balanced customer-mix, continued product innovations, controlled production & inventory, LNJ has been able to sail through, still far from expectations but somehow managing to stay-foot to survive this turbulence. The industry is far from normalcy till the demand-supply equation is balanced, unless you are have a robust customer network, product innovations and controlled costs its difficult to survive. LNJ continues to work on these principles and hopefully things will improve going forward.

    6. You have a very long experience in the Indian denim industry and have contributed significantly to some of the best companies in the industry. How do you think the industry has changed in the last 2 decades?

Industry has changed dramatically in last few years. It is purely on Indian trade market more inclined towards Knit look products and very clean products with good stretch levels for comfort. It has completely moved on higher width and more darker shade requirements.
But at the same time 3/1 is still equally prominent with all the brands in place and it has equivalent share in the market. Quality , services, new developments, sustainability, price etc are given parameters for good players.

    7. What 3 products from LNJ stable would you say address the key global denim trends .

Currently products using sustainable fibres like Hemp, Ecovero & also the one developed using Bio-indigo are key hot trends globally.

    100 % ? Sustainable Collection By Desigual X Ecoalf

Waste and raw materials  have been put into great use by Spanish brand , Desigual along with Ecoalf. A collection , claimed to be 100 percent sustainable ,  has been unveiled by the brand recently. This collection is made  entirely from recycled and reusable materials using the textile waste thereby being more environment friendly. Ecoalf is the first fashion brand in Spain to become B CorpTM .

Desigual , with  the help of Ecoalf produced this collection as a “ Gift Waste” that is 100% love for everybody and our planet . Ecoalf originated in 2009 with the idea  to create a sustainable fashion brand and in the current collection created jackets, bags, sneakers and a lot more from the waste like plastic, textile waste etc. Enhancing the concept of reuse, reinterpret, rethink and relove, the brand has tried to have its own footprint on the sustainability road .  With technology , it made the capsule with recyclable materials.

A second version of the iconic denim jacket has been created which was originally created by Thomas Meyer in the 80s from denim scraps with leather embellishments of different colours. The jacket is made with patchwork and scraps of vintage jeans.

Some other non-denim articles launched are below. The 2in 1 reversible jackets are made from 100 % recycled nylon. The trainers and sneakers are made from recycled polyester from plastic bottles. The lightweight and waterproof bags are made using 20 per cent less water consumption, 50 per cent less energy and 60 per cent less CO2 emissions – as claimed by the brand. However, as always, there is no way to measure these claims.

Javier Goyeneche, president and founder of Ecoalf, said in a statement: “Reducing environmental impact is everyone’s responsibility. This is why alliances between fashion industry companies are essential to continued progress towards a model that facilitates sustainable fashion manufacturing.“Joining forces with Desigual in this effort to pair their unique designs and creativity with sustainability and a commitment to the environment is both challenging and satisfying.”

Japanese Sakiori Weave & Boro Patchwork by KUON

KUON is derived from the Japanese words “Kuon”, “Distant past or future” and “Eternity”.The essence of the brand is to pursue a simple, cool, unreasonable style that incorporates the history and culture of used clothes and cloths that exist around the world, but is not bound by its frame and changes over time. The Japanese label highlighted the heritage collection by presenting the Sakiori Weave and Boro Patchwork in the latest SS20 collection. The brand displayed the articles and inspired us by this new look for the season.

The brand is very famous for the Boro work with rags and ran or could be called worn out clothing. KUON is constantly pursuing new fashion and continuing to challenge for new values without being bound by unnecessary nostalgia. The Japanese word sakiori comes from “saki,” which means to tear or rip up, and “ori,” which means weave. “Saki” relates to preparing the fabric by striping it into pieces and “ori” refers to weaving it together. It is the woven art for worn out clothing whereas the Boro textile is the art of patchwork.

  • Brands, Fabric Mills & Manufacturers Join Jeans Redesign Initiative

Brands, Fabric Mills & Manufacturers Join Jeans Redesign Initiative

In February 2019, Make Fashion Circular brought together a group of industry experts in an intensive workshop, to collaboratively test and further develop a common vision of what good looks like for jeans. As an outcome of the workshop, a draft set of Guidelines were produced for the Jeans Redesign, these have been tested and iterated with representatives from brands, garment manufacturers, fabric mills, recyclers, and academics in addition to those present on the day.
The result of this work is a set of co-developed Guidelines that define a starting point for the industry to design and produce jeans in accordance with the principles of a circular economy at scale. The Guidelines are divided into four areas: durability, material health, recyclability, and traceability. This document lays out the definition of terms in each area, the detailed requirements that must be achieved as a minimum, and the process for validating these achievements.

Thus The Ellen MacArthur foundation launched its JEANS REDESIGN initiative. This initiative aims to make the jeans manufacturing process a circular process. This initiative promises to  meet guidelines including minimum requirements on garment long lasting capability , using material which is good for environment and the workers , recyclability and traceability. The Jeans Redesign was created by Make Fashion Circular Initiative by British Circular Economy Charity. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has extended these norms to allow fabric mills and manufacturers to join the project.

    GUIDELINES

Durability – Garments should have labels with clear information. Jeans should withstand a minimum of 30 home laundries.

Health – Jeans manufacturing should be free of chemicals and organic methods must be used to ensure the environment safety.

Recyclability – The materials or accessories used in the jeans should be easily removable for re-use and re-cycle. Jeans should be made with 98% cellulose fibers.

Traceability – The garments with the Jeans Redesign logo should be traceable and easily available.

The foundation was launched in 2010 to make the economy circular. Make Fashion Circular was launched by UK charity the Ellen MacArthur Foundation at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2018.

For joining the Jeans Redesign initiative, the mills must fulfill the guidelines for ZDHC (Zero Discharge Hazardous Chemicals) including testing and produce less than 0.025 MN of wastewater per yard. This initiative aims to improve jeans manufacturing, track the waste management  and is developed for denim heads from brands, retailers, manufacturers, sorters etc.

“More companies joining the Jeans Redesign demonstrates the appetite in the industry for practical solutions that support the transition to a thriving fashion industry, where all our clothes are used for longer, are made from safe and renewable materials, and are made to be made again. This kind of industrywide shift needs companies from across fashion to work together,” Make Fashion Circular’s Francois Souchet said in a recent statement.

    How To Participate

To take part in the Project, Participants must specify how their jeans will meet the Jeans Redesign Guidelines, and how they intend to accelerate progress against the Guidelines beyond the minimum requirements set out.
Participants will detail the validation methods that will be used to confirm the Guidelines have been met. This information will be provided on the Participation Form and, unless otherwise stated, will be publicly disclosed as part of the reporting progress by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on behalf of Make Fashion Circular.
Participants are encouraged to disclose the percentage of jeans produced that will meet the Guidelines in either their annual report or sustainability report to offer a benchmark for progress. In addition, Participants are requested to disclose the number of their jeans produced that will meet the Guidelines to Make Fashion Circular which will publish the figure as an aggregated number for all Participants.
By the end of May 2021, Participants will be required to submit the Report Form to Make Fashion Circular to confirm that they have met the initial agreed specifications, to share any deviations from this original specification, and to provide details of how these meet each element of the criteria. To comply with its charitable objectives, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on behalf of Make Fashion Circular will make the information submitted on the Report Form public on the Make Fashion Circular website. Make Fashion Circular encourages third-party verification or assurance of reported data where appropriate. If Participants confirm this has been obtained, this will be included alongside the Participant’s reported data. Make Fashion Circular do not verify or audit the data provided to it, and this is then reported on an ‘as is’ basis.
Participants need to  provide high-level information about the type of third-party organisation who will
perform the verification or assurance exercise, and any plans for future development of verification or assurance processes for the data reported.
