The unstable market conditions, falling disposable incomes, and demand are now affecting the gigantic manufacturers and the global leaders in the production, and Bangladesh – one of the biggest jeans exporters worldwide, has also been affected in its exports. If the data is to be believed, Bangladesh reported a fall of 10.76 % in their jeans export to the EU for the period Jan-August,2019 compared to the same period last year. In this report, we analyze the following :
Volumes exported by Bangladesh to EU and Its corresponding average price

EXPORT OF JEANS
Bangladesh exported 162.36 million pcs of jeans to EU during Jan-Aug’18 at an average price of Euro 5.65/pc which slipped to the level of 144.85 million pcs during Jan-Aug’19, marking a fall of export of 10.76% within a year. During the calendar year 2018, the total jeans export to EU was 238.64 million pcs, with the export figure of the first eight months, the export of jeans to EU at the end of 2019 is expected to be approx 217 million pcs which would be 9% lesser than the export of 2018.

MEN V. WOMEN JEANS
Bangladesh’s ratio of men and women jeans export has been around 55:45 which means Bangladesh is more into Men jeans production than Women one. However, if we see the past, Bangladesh was primarily focused on exporting men’s jeans only and it is only in recent years (after China’s export fall) that the exports of women’s jeans also increased. As far as the average price is concerned, Women Jeans are more competitive than Men Jeans. During Jan-Aug’19, the average price of Men Jeans was Euro 6.15/pc however for Women Jeans it was Euro 5.80/pc only. Since the overall export to the EU witnessed a fall in the 1st 8 months, we could see the cascading effect in both the segments. During Jan-Aug’18, the total export of Men Jeans was 89.20 million pcs which came down to 79.33 million pcs during Jan-Aug’19. For women denim, the total export was 73.16 million pcs during Jan-Aug’18 which slipped to 65.52 million pcs next year during the same period.

IMPORT OF JEANS BY LEADING EU COUNTRIES
Except for Belgium, all the leading importers in the EU have reported a fall in the import of jeans from Bangladesh during Jan-Aug’19. Germany imported 20% lesser Jeans, Italy imported 18% lesser and Spain imported 9% lesser jeans during Jan-Aug’19 from Bangladesh. As per the estimation, based on the trends of the 1st eight months, we are expecting a fall of further 1% in the imports of Germany by the end of this calendar year. The signs of recovery in the imports could be also seen in some of the importing countries including France and the Netherlands which showed positive growth in import figures. Belgium cannot strictly be considered as a consumer since it is a large importing port for the goods and most of them might be transferred to other EU nations. This is true for other EU countries as well and we cannot strictly say that the quantity imported has been consumed in the same country.

AVERAGE PRICE
The average price of all the countries during the period of Jan-Aug19 has been increased. The average price for Germany during Jan-Aug’18 was Euro 5.73 which reached Euro 6.30/pc next year, similarly, the average price for exports of jeans to France, UK, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain took an upward movement this year. Belgium’s average price saw the biggest shift of more than 30% within a year. The rising price is, perhaps, one of the reasons why the imports from Bangladesh are falling. We must remember here that competing countries – though none of them as big as Bangladesh – are already making an impact whether it is Vietnam, Ethiopia, Myanmar or others.

Denimsandjeans Japan – #designedinnovation | September 29- 30 | Tokyo
Welcoming next is #KUROKI from Japan at the 1st edition of Denimsandjeans Japan Show which is scheduled for September 29-30 at Sunshine City, Tokyo. To visit the show, please register at https://lnkd.in/fGtBBXA . For any information, write to us at info@denimsandjeans.com .
Most of us are already aware that Sustainability is the need of the hour in the denim industry as denim manufacturing creates excessive levels of waste. Major brands are putting in efforts to conserve the environment and nature and there is increased activity down the line . Another remarkable effort made recently by the US based denim brand, Wrangler , touches another milestone in producing denims without generating waste and pollution.
The conventional dyeing process has been removed with sustainable ways of creating denim. The new innovation by the brand promises to eradicate water wastage upto 100 percent. This foam dyed technology is called Indigood that eliminates 100 percent water waste generated through conventional dyeing methods in denim manufacturing. Not only this, Indigood reduces energy consumption and energy waste by 60 % as compared to other methods of dyeing. This new technique was created in partnership with Texas Tech University and a Spanish fabric mill , Tejidos Royo in Valencia. The detailed process of this technology was reported in an article at our site here last year when it was undergoing installation and now the actual collection is out in the market and we bring an updated info on the same.
“We’re proud to have helped pioneer a technology that has the potential to revolutionize sustainability standards for denim,†said Tom Waldron, VP & Global Brand President, Wrangler. “The introduction of Indigoodâ„¢ foam-dyed denim represents our continued commitment to use our global scale to advance the denim industry, while maintaining the authenticity, quality and style that consumers expect from Wrangler.â€
Usually, to prepare a single pair of jeans, it needs gallons of water and chemicals to transfer the indigo to yarn. This new process uses a foaming agent instead of chemicals and that too without wasting water to give the blue color to your denim. Wrangler, which is owned by Kontoor Brand claims this technology as the most sustainable way of dyeing denim and hope to get other brands on board in using this technique in future.
Visit the new ICON collection by Wrangler here that includes male and female jeans , shirts and jackets in two denim sahdes – Good Day (light) and Good Night (night). Some of these are hand picked below!
Does ecological balance is at stake? It doesn’t seem much in daily life but it is gradually changing social and environmental scenarios on a global level. What are we doing presently will silhouette the tomorrow for sure? Emerging toxicity is slowly choking purity and mineral equilibrium of air and water resources. What are the reasons behind such colossal pollution?
There are plenty of other reasons but being the second largest source for emerging pollution Textile Industry is heavily affecting the ecological balance.
Is there any sense of self-realization in the Textile Industry?
If we compare the depiction from the phase a few decades ago, it can be said that Textile The industry has started sensing the utility of sustainability and collective efforts are made towards maintaining the ecological balance.
Is something still there restricting the industry from making more impactful efforts to reach sustainability? Yes, there is, and it’s the hesitation to acclimatize the change and being distinct from the rest. A sense of realization is certainly there, but having a will to acclimatize the change may take time. People have worked on several areas of Textile from Supply Chain to Processing to Finishing but Natural Dye is a kind of unexplored area.
Textile Industry is probing a permanent solution for sustainability since 1995. Millions of dollars are done and dusted; even then the situation has not changed much. In the year 1995, Azo dyes were banned due to the presence of hazardous substances. It is quite surprising to know that a cotton fabric comes in contact with around 800 chemicals until it transforms into a final product. At that time, only 70-80 hazardous substances were researched and banned to use in dyes. Research on substances is a constant process and as per the outcome of research, bans are levied on substances. Therefore, a synthetic dye which had passed the previous certification may fail in the next. This is the reason industry hasn’t witnessed an inspiring change in
emerging toxicity.
What is such change and what is the most prolific solution for sustainability? Probably one of the answers is Natural Dyes. Since emergence, Natural Dyes have passed all the certifications and standards without any modification.
Veracity of Aniline-Free Products
One of the common things happening is that a product that is made a bit different from the existing ones is highlighted or promoted as a unique product. It can be sensed sometimes that concern has been shifted towards making unique product rather than making right, safe and environmental-friendly product. For instance, if you look at the hair dye segment, products are promoted by stating they are ‘Ammonia-Free’. But the matter of fact is different as Ammonia is not a color giving component, its PD that provides color to hair-dyes and until it remains in the component, hair- dyes stay allergen.
We were speaking to the owner of AMA Herbal – Mr Yawar – and according to him he has a solution which the denim industry must look at – the BIO INDIGO (Natural Indigo) . He says :
“If you are finding a product which is unique then you can go for the Aniline-Free product but ifyou like to go for a product which should be environmental friendly and sustainable as well you should go for Bio Indigo.”
He further stresses
“Bio Indigo absolutely justifies the realism of sustainability. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) reports also clarify that Bio Indigo certainly has an upper hand in improving the sustainability. It is good to know that consuming 1KG of Bio Indigo results in 10KG lesser Carbon footprint in comparison to Synthetic Indigo. People usually talk about the ecological sustainability but sustainability actually relies on three vital pillars i.e. Society, Economy and Ecology.”
Further adding some spin off benefits of using this indigo , he mentions :
“It’s good to know that people are showing their apprehension towards ecological sustainability but the rest two pillars can’t be left behind. When you consume 1KG of Bio Indigo it gives one day wages to two people in rural areas. Such earned money gives them a social and economical strength and they utilize it for education of their kids and for betterment of their family as well. This is why Bio Indigo completely justifies the absolute meaning of sustainability as it is strengthening all its pillars. Now it is your call as which sustainability is more important for you an Aniline-Free product or a product that is enriching life along with maintaining the ecological balance. The choice belongs to the consumer. “

Cambodia has not been able to really cash in to their special status for GSP in Europe because of their infrastructural issues and labor problems where the factories find it tough to operate even though the costs are lower. Vietnam – the next door neighbor – is taking the advantage and improving exports each year even though they don’t have any GSP benefit to Europe. This clearly shows that duty advantages can only be one of the factor which can help a country improve exports. But the country has to manage itself well to be able to perform well.
[/private_special]
We hope in the coming times, there will be some correction and the country recovers with a bang. Cambodia has great potential but some of the recent events including labor unrest and strikes caused adverse effects on the exports of apparel. The consistency and favorable business policies are need of the hour, the international buyers are now shifting their sourcing base from china and other countries and Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, India, and Ethiopia are one of them which could make the most of it.
PRPS RePrps/Artisans Series is a collaborative design program focused on highlighting sustainability while supporting innovative artisans and makers. The series features the customized jeans of PRPS which has been made in collaboration with some of the most reputed denim designers including Gala, Atelier & Repairs, MG&HKM.
Here are some of our favorite pieces :
Le Sabre – Rinse Painted
The newest addition to RePrps/Artisans program is hand-painted jeans by Miami-based, artist GALA. GALA repurposed PRPS’s best-selling Le Sabre Fit Jeans, in deep black rinse denim, with an embellishment process that yields dramatic, one of a kind results. Each size in the range is designed to look the same, but small differences will appear as each piece was created individually.
Prps X Atelier & Repairs Re-Purposed Windsor Bleached
Introducing Prps X Atelier & Repairs, the latest collaboration in Atelier & Repairs which is the fashion industry leader in the movement to reduce excess production, one of the core principles of RePrps/Artisans.
The first collaboration between Prps X Atelier & Repairs is a mashup of iconic Prps designs and vintage textiles from the Atelier & Repairs archives. Atelier & Repairs re-engineered and re-designed these pieces into one of kind jeans and sweatshirts, destined to become collector’s items.
The iconic, bleach wash, slim-fit stretch jeans by PRPS have just the right amount of rip & repair, with signature paint splatter details. Atelier & Repairs repurposed them by adding multi-pattern trim down each leg, floral patches, and knee rip backing.
Prps X Atelier & Repairs Re-Purposed Windsor White
The PRPS’s classic, white slim fit, stretch, ripped jeans have been updated with their signature, subtle black paint splatter details. Atelier & Repairs repurposed them by adding camo, indigo and plaid patchwork on the front, stitching on the pockets and back patch details.
Hand Painted Logo Denim Jacket
The second collaboration between Prps and MG&HKM is a mashup of classic Prps and culture. MG&HKM repurposed the iconic trucker jackets by PRPS into one of kind works of art, destined to become collector’s items.
Each jacket was hand-painted and/or hand illustrated using a combination of bleach, sharpie markers, ballpoint pens, spray paint, acrylic paint, and ink.
On the whole, great art applied to existing jeans in repurposing them to create great value.
A new collboration from the iconic denim brand, Levi’s and the sci-fi franchise, Star Wars turned many heads recently. The limited edition collection is a beautiful mixture of force and fashion.Skywalker wrote history in 1977 by wearing the jeans in Star Wars shooting. While Skywalker’s jeans were auctioned in 2013 for $36,000, Levi’s and Lucasfilm have again come together to design a Star Wars theme capsule to commemorate the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga. This collection will mark the release of the conclusion – Star Wars: The Rise of The Skywalker which will hit the theatres in December.
Jonathan Cheung, the senior vice president of design innovation at Levi’s, says “I remember being absolutely gobsmacked, open mouthed, breathless in the cinema when I watched it,†Cheung says. “It must have been 1977? And it remains, to this day, my personally most-watched film in a cinema. I watched it at least five times in its first release.â€
The collection includes denim jackets, hoodies , jeans and tees with the galaxy makeover. Trendy buttons, designs, latest prints with Star Wars Quotes give an unexpected grace to the peices. On the selvedge, a special loom was used to weave “May The Force Be With You†in yellow and black.Pieces in the line also include customized buttons in the same hue as the crawl. One of the many posters in the film is used to print the jacket’s back. The “icon meets icon†collection is one of the most inspiring piece with galaxy print over the denim and jacket.
Cheung says “We were looking to recreate fan-made vintage. There’s a future-vintage flavor to it. You can’t quite place the timeline. It feels very familiar and has that nostalgia but also it’s new.â€

Lee Jeans recently celebrated 130 years of heritage by going back to Kansas, where the brand was born. Honouring the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of its founder, H.D Lee, the brand has collaborated with the new generation of Kansas creatives.
The campaign stars hip-hop artist, Kye Colors, the co-founders of Brasstacks, Kevin and Molly Jarvis, Chef and owner of The Russell restaurant, Amante Domingo, songwriter and frontwoman Kianna Alarid, stylist, Amy Appleton Dreyer, and Paper Planes bass player and record producer, Danny Santell – who also produced the music to accompany the moving image campaign.
Selected for their love of Lee Jeans and Kansas City, this next generation has also been shot on film, speaking about what the city and Lee Jeans means to them. The brand has also used the city itself to help tell the story of its history, with the campaign shot across significant locations. The Crossroads district is the city’s lively arts neighborhood. It makes a perfect backdrop for the brand’s FW19 collection as it was formerly the freight district from where Lee’s workwear would be transported across the country.
Denimsandjeans speaks to Mr. Michael Kampe – Creative Director Of LEE (EMEA) on Its Return To Kansas City and Sustainability.
Q How does it feel to go back to the place where the brand was actually born? Nostalgic?
The choice to go back to our origin to shoot our campaign, especially when it comes to celebrating the 130 anniversary was an obvious choice. We wanted to pay homage to the pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit of Henry David Lee and to the city.
Q You have some stars who are LEE lovers adding their own bit to the campaign. Tell us more about how they involved in the campaign.
For the FW19 campaign, Created in Kansas, we have decided to collaborate with the authentic Kansas community of today, people that represent the new generation of do-ers, makers, builders, and creators. All the profiles we have chosen to work with, share the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of our founder, Henry David Lee. So, all the profiles that we’ve selected to showcase our collection are representing the creative and innovative spirit of today’s Kansas.
Q The famous Lee Union-All overalls are also about 130 years plus old and were made first in Kansas only. It must be great to revisit this product in some way.
Being one of the oldest denim and workwear brands in the business means you automatically build a very rich archive. On top of that, with purposeful design in our DNA, some of our original and legendary designs have become iconic and timeless. And we are always going back to our archives for inspiration and search to innovate and revisit our iconic products.
We achieve this by updating the fit, finishing, and fabric we use, making them relevant for today and crafting our icons of the future: take for example this season’s ’Whizit’, based on the Union -All originally, is a workwear classic. Its details are very characteristic and we gave it a more feminine interpretation with an on-trend wide leg and in a fluent draping fabric that pays homage to the original sturdy material it was made in. These pieces are really versatile and work just as well today as in the past or the future, which to us is proof of good design.
Q Sustainability has been focused on during your current season collection using the N-Denim technology of Candiani, BCI Cotton and many other aspects of production. Can you elaborate more on the same?
Indeed, sustainability is a hot topic and together with responsibility, are parts of our main strategies. For FW19 we have several initiatives throughout our collections ranging from recycled denim in some of our Lee 101 items, to sustainable selvedge denim for our best men and women fits and our iconic Rider Jacket. The sustainable denim has been produced by Candiani Mill, reputed as one of the greenest mills in the world, where patented sustainable techniques such as N-Denim, Kitotex, Indigo Dye have been used to dye the fabrics. On top, we have used organic cotton for our classic one pocket Tshirts.
Q Has LEE defined any long-term sustainable goals in terms of water usage, carbon footprints, energy consumption etc?
Indeed, as part of Kontoor, we are committed to respect the company’s global sustainability engagements:
Use 100% preferred chemistry throughout our supply chain by 2020
Conserve 5.5 billion liters of water by 2020
Source 100% sustainable cotton by 2025
Power all owned and operated facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2025
These goals are both ambitious and impactful and we’re proud of where we are on our journey.
Q Now Lee is a separate entity and is under the Kontor Brands, away from Kansas, How’s the new journey altogether for the Lee so far?
VF was home for Lee for more than 4 decades, helping to establish it as one of the most iconic global brands, that is much-loved by consumers worldwide today. The rationale for the separation of Kontoor from VF Corporation was all about giving the companies the opportunity to optimize our distinct capabilities, strategic growth priorities and paths to value creation. Now, with Kontoor, Lee has clear strategic priorities and resources to grow our business and ensure that the brand continues to thrive in the dynamic consumer marketplace and become a unified global brand.
An advanced technology jacket made from the partnership of Levi’s and Google surely is a next step in the field of technology after their previous launch of smart jacket 2 years back. The smart sensitive touch on the jacket enables the user to access their phones and get alerts in a very easy way.It depicts the new generation of wearable technology by Google. Paul Dillinger, Vice President of Global Product Innovation, Levi Strauss & Co. says:
“We’re excited to continue this journey with our partners at Google A.T.A.P.Two years after we first launched Jacquard – the technology has become smaller and more discrete, more affordable and with more useful… but the premise and purpose remain the same: you can keep your phone in your pocket and your eyes on the world around you, staying connected without being distracted.â€
How Does It Work?
For easy accessibility , they have planted a sensor in the left cuff of the jacket which works like a smartwatch. You need to connect the tag with your device by JACQUARD mobile application. After activating the Bluetooth, you can listen to music , check your notes and calendars, attend and get notified for calls , navigate to the location and a lot more without actually using your phone.A gesture can even trigger the camera from your phone.Just rub your sleeve and you can access the features without much effort. There is a light that flashes for any notification you have received in your mobile phone example light flashes even on arrival of a cab ! Not only the supporting features, but the tag has not compromised in the design as it is too small to get noticed.
But it comes with a precautionary measures to build its durability as the Bluetooth must be removed from the cuff before washing. There is still a need to improvise the technology as you need to remove the device before every wash and it comes with proper care instructions.
According to Levi’s spokesperson, “You’ll be able to take care of it like a normal denim jacket,†she said further. “Washing, especially at high heat uses lots of energy and water, and so we always advise consumers to wash only when needed, use cold water and air dry whenever possible. It’s worth noting the care label on the jacket advises to: ‘Machine wash cold. Do not bleach. Tumble dry medium.’“
With the motive of reaching out to more people , Google and Levis are doing so by offering more designs, launching in more countries and most importantly, cutting prices. Now, the Jacquard in Levis’ Sherpa Trucker jackets in addition to plain Trucker for both men and women, is available at the price starting from $198 at their website. The jacket even gets automatically updated with the new versions and features launched time to time.If you want to grab the latest version of this jacket, the brand is launching the new collection with advanced features this fall.
