Report On Japanese Fabric Export - 2017 To 2019

Thus the overall volumes of exports from Japan have gone down and also to some extent the prices. This reflects the difficult situation of the market globally which is also affecting Japan. Their productions are not huge in Japan and shifting their productions overseas as far as possible . Nisshinbo and Kurabo shifted their productions long back and even Kaihara makes more in China than in Japan. Other companies like Kuroki etc have also reduced productions.

    Japan Jeans Import : 2017 – 2019

Japan is one of the most inspiring country when it comes to denim. The way the Japanese have gone deep into creating their own stamp on denim in the last 5-6 decades is marvelous. This gives the local grown Japanese denim a special flavor and touch.
However, not many people know that Japan is also the third largest importer of jeans globally after EU and US. with approx 175-180 million jeans imported in a year. This is because, though Japanese have some good local production, the same are much more expensive and many retailers and brands import their jeans from overseas.
In the current report , we will see how much Japan has imported from different countries – with prices, quantities etc. Some of the important countries include China, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Turkey etc.

    Japan Jeans Import : 2017 - 2019 | Denimsandjeans

    Japan Jeans Import : 2017 - 2019 | Denimsandjeans

    2019 till august

In 2019 we again see a further fall in imports from China with the 8 month share being about 47% while again we see a rise in share of Bangladesh. Share of even countries like Turkey falls as they reduce their exports to Japan. Myanmar is one of unpredicatable exporters where the numbers keep on changing each year – though by year end we think it will cross its 2018 figures.

Bangladesh Vs Pakistan – Denim Exports To EU From 2016 To 2018

In this report, we’ve analyzed the trend of Denim Jeans from Bangladesh and Pakistan to the EU for the years 2016 to 2018 to understand how these both important countries are performing when it comes to their most important market ie the EU.

Pakistan and Bangladesh both enjoy GSP benefit to EU and this has helped them to take a major share of market away from China which was the previous holder of major share in this market. We try to understand how these countries have developed their exports to the EU during these 3 years

Jeans Exported To EU By Bangladesh (BD) And Pakistan (PK) During 2016-18

By the end of the year 2018, the total denim exports by Bangladesh to the EU stood at 238.66 million pcs, which is 14% more than the export of 2016 and 11% more than 2017. Pakistan, on the other hand, exported 105.6 million pcs of denim to the EU by the end of 2019 which is only 2% higher than the export of 2016. The year 2018 also witnessed a marginal decline of 3.94 lacs pcs in the export from 2017.

14% Rise In Bangladeshi Denim Exports To EU, May Achieve Export Of 25 Million Pcs By The End Of 2019

Average Price (Euro/Pc) Of Jeans Exported

Bangladesh is one of the cost-competitive countries and due to various factors like lower costs, efficiencies and large capacities, the country has been exporting denim at very competitive prices. Bangladesh exported its Jeans at an  average price of Euro 5.71/pc in 2018 whereas Pakistan exported at Euro 7.03/Pc. Though the prices cannot strictly be compared unless there is a comparison of types of products exported, their complexities, volumes,  qualities, types of buyers etc but on broader terms, Bangladesh’s prices were lower than that of Pakistan.

Another interesting fact to note is that both countries have become more competitive in terms of price over a period of three years and we can see the changes in the below table and graphs.Increased competition among themselves and with countries like Vietnam and Ethiopia with a better geographical dividend and huge FDIs in past years made the trade little more intense. It is a reflection of a sad fact of our industry that with each passing year we are actually reducing the prices whereas the costs of production are going up ! .This also reflects that our industry is oversaturated with supply far exceeding the demand.

Jeans – Women & Men, Exported To EU By Bangladesh (BD) And Pakistan (PK) During 2016-18

Interesting to note that Pakistan is more focused on Men’s jeans with its Men jeans volume being almost double than that of women. However, in the period of 2016-28, the %age of women jeans is slowly increasing but its exports are still majorly dominated by Men’s Jeans.

Bangladesh also exports more Men’s jeans but their gap between the two is not so much. The exports of Men’s jeans was about 50% more than that of Women’s in 2016 whereas in 2018 it is about 30% more. So Bangladesh has probably better adapted to women jeans production over the years taking a major share away from China which was the major exporter of Women jeans.

But the drop in prices of women denim is more sharp for both the countries over a 3 year period. Bangladesh reduced its Men’s denim prices by about 6% from 2016 to 2018 whereas Pakistan reduced the prices of the same by about 5%. In Women’s denim , the reduction by BD is about 8.5% whereas that of PK is about 9% .

    • Do you have long term plans to reach higher goals of sustainability as some other brands are targeting?
Our 2021 GUESS Eco goals are ambitious yet achievable. We intend to meet our goals so that we can set the bar higher for ourselves and our products in the long term. However, our sustainability reporting is third-party verified to assure the trust and integrity of reporting, which can sometimes require us to be more conservative than our peers, who do not have 3rd third party validation of their sustainability metrics.
    • Do you think the final consumer is ready to pay extra to buy sustainable denim even though a the cheaper but not sustainable option is readily available?
Our goal is to recreate our classic styles in sustainable fabrics without compromising our price points. Although sustainable apparel can sometimes be more costly, we strive to offer our customers a luxury experience at accessible pricing.

Q&A with Lenzing Fibers (Tencel) – Ms Tricia Carey

    • Lenzing has been working hard towards increasing the sustainability of the global fashion industry. How important is a collaboration with Guess in this direction?
It was important to collaborate with Guess to support their strategic goals lowering the environmental impact, without compromising style and quality.  Guess established a viable fiber strategy, as well as an educational platform for their team.  Throughout the development process the Guess team was inquisitive and eager to learn.
    • Your most products have different elements of sustainability. Refibra is one of them. Can you enumerate how you would rank your own products from a sustainable angle?
The Lenzing portfolio of fibers includes LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose, TENCEL™ Modal and Lyocell; all produced under our global pulp policy.  We offer manmade cellulosic options to support the sustainability strategies of brands and retailers across various product categories and price levels.  One of our latest developments is TENCEL™ Lyocell with  REFIBRA™  technology bringing circularity to textiles using cotton scraps to make new TENCEL™ lyocell fibers.  There is no compromise to strength or comfort with TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ Denim.
    • How good, do you think, is the march of the global denim industry towards sustainability?
Each season the denim industry is attempting to tackle the global sustainability challenges from fiber to finished products to consumer use. It is complex to address the water, chemical, energy, social issues and more impacting the denim industry.  At the same time we are faced with the factors of increased consumption, investment costs, greenwashing and price demands.  There certainly is a realization that we have to change our ways during this era of global sustainability revolution.
