The efforts of Garmon’s R&D in the development of sustainable products led to the creation of greenofchange®, the platform to enhance chemical safety and to improve environmental performance in garments treatment. Greenofchange® treatments are a combination of Garmon safe, certified product (ZDHC Gateway at level 1 or above), with processes efficient in terms of use of natural resources.

As per Garmon, due to gs pigments, a range of certified colors, now it’s also possible to have completely sustainable dyeing processes.

Gap-Arvind Partnership Aims At Reducing Water Usage In Textile Industry

Water pollution has been a major problem in the apparel industry and major giants have been implementing various measures and technologies to overcome it.The American clothing retailer GAP Inc. has partnered with sourcing and franchise partner in India, Arvind Ltd. to open an Innovation Centre with technologies and methods to curb the rising problem of water waster in the textile industry.

    The Innovation Centre

The 18000 square foot plant will be opened in Ahmedabad, India next year that will analyse and research on the ways to reduce the water waste. The investment is being made in a water treatment facility also that will reduce the use of fresh water at the Arvind’s mills in India by reusing the water from the plant. The facility will save three billion liters of fresh water by the end of next year and preserve the local community’s vital freshwater resources, as per GAP and ARVIND’s estimates. This space will also include best techniques, a library, classroom trainings , conference space and lab space to develop water management ways. Gap believes that after the completion of this innovation center, various other laundries and mills will scale the technology to preserve the water from being getting polluted.

“The apparel industry is one of the most intensive users of water in the world and, in India, 54 percent of the population faces high to extremely high water risk,” as mentioned in the Gap’s press release.

The technology that will be used in the center is MBR-Membrane Bio Reactor which treats the waste domestic water for reusable purposes without involving any chemicals and without disturbing the fresh water levels. The current fresh water consumption of Arvind is eight million liters per day. This practice will eventually reduce the water usage from local community and will enhance business for both GAP and Arvind thereby reducing the local water scarcity issues.

“Traditionally, manufacturing apparel has been a water intensive, water wasting process,” says Art Peck, president and CEO of Gap Inc.

Art Peck, president and CEO of GAP

Once the treatment of water will start, the water cleaning process will pace up and benefit the mills as well as the local community. This is highly required in India where 70% of the water is contaminated and a large number of people do not have safe drinking water. This partnership will be a large step in making the environment more sustainable.

“The industry has been a borderline irresponsible consumer of water across many of those processes,” Gap Inc. Chief Executive Officer Art Peck said in an interview. “For us, this was a step forward.”

  • From Picture To Laser : A New Tool By RevoLaze

From Picture To Laser : A New Tool By RevoLaze

RevoLaze, LLC, a laser technology firm headquartered in Westlake, OH, announced today that it has successfully launched CarbonLaze, an online software tool aimed at significantly decreasing the time to create laser design files, while giving it a more authentic and natural look.

From Picture To Laser–A New Tool By RevoLaze | Denimsandjeans

Over the past several years, the denim industry’s shift to laser etching as the finishing method of choice has resulted in a more sustainable and production friendly practice over hand sanding. The preference for laser etching has also led for the necessary time required to create laser files from denim standards. The time to draw a laser file can range from 2-4 hours for basic patterns and upwards of 8-12 hours for more complex, vintage type patterns. With some manufacturers reporting up to 40 standards a week from brands that need to be converted to laser files, they have difficulty keeping up with this demand and resort back to hand sanding for those standards that cannot be drawn in Photoshop in time.

CarbonLaze online software solves the industry’s great need by providing brands and manufacturers a patent-pending tool to automatically convert these denim standards to laser ready files. The process is simple: take a high quality photograph of the denim garment, upload the photo to CarbonLaze and a laser file is created within minutes. If necessary, laser designers can also go back in Photoshop with the CarbonLaze laser file and make any minor adjustments. Since they are standard laser files, CarbonLaze files will open in Photoshop and work on all laser systems currently in the market.

Vintage garments can be very time consuming and difficult to replicate in Photoshop. In the example below, one of CarbonLaze’s early adopters, Silvermoon Jeans, quickly converted their vintage garment and made a few minor modifications to achieve the look. A file that could take a full day to draw, now only took a few minutes.

According to Darryl Costin Jr., President of RevoLaze, CarbonLaze provides many much-needed benefits to the entire industry,

“This is such an important innovation for every part of the denim supply chain. Decreasing pattern creation from 80% to 100% affords manufacturers the opportunity to save time and money while decreasing harmful labor practices. Smaller orders of hand sand production runs can now be converted to laser. CarbonLaze also provides the denim brands more authentic and natural looking lasered garments by picking up all the details, including more highs and lows, from pictures that are difficult to hand draw in Photoshop.”

RevoLaze feels this online software will greatly help both denim brands and manufacturers. Denim brands can now go back to their archive of vintage garments, quickly convert them with CarbonLaze and send the laser files to their manufacturers. Manufacturers can further improve their productivity, spend less time creating laser files and spend more time developing standards and new looks that were too difficult to design before.

From Picture To Laser–A New Tool By RevoLaze | Denimsandjeans

To RevoLaze’s Vice President of Operations, Ryan Ripley, CarbonLaze software is just one more tool for laser designers to get the most ideal outcomes possible,

“For the past two decades, our main goal as a company is to provide the denim industry ways to maximize their denim finishing capabilities. Last year, we launched LightLaze, another online software program to convert multi-layer laser files into single layer files, in which over 200 users have already realized its benefits. CarbonLaze builds off of this momentum that answers the industry’s desire to speed up the laser file creation process. We look forward to working together with CarbonLaze users to help them hit their design and production goals.”

In addition to the already mentioned benefits, CarbonLaze also picks up the wash characteristics, texture and overall abrasion on the garment, which can reduce wash time of the garment in production. The software even has a unique feature built in that automatically improves the feathering of every file.

The Average Price Of Eu Imports From Bangladesh, China and Pakistan

    B A N G L A D E S H

Bangladesh has been one of the most important denim sourcing locations in the world now and also on the way to become the biggest. Competitive pricing and shorter lead time are two major attributes which made this country very much attractive in the past few years, especially for the mid-range denim brands. However, the inability to cater to smaller MOQs has been becoming a serious issue for the suppliers as well as the buyers. Dependency on imported fabrics, though it is going down, and less focus on innovation and R&D might trouble Bangladesh in the longer run. The rise of Vietnamese Apparel Industry in the past 5 years and to be signed EVFTA between the EU and Vietnam might impact the prospects of Bangladesh if things will not be fixed within due time.

Bangladesh is one of the biggest suppliers to the EU countries and in 2016, the country shipped 121.6 million pcs of Men’s denim and 87.9 million pcs of Women’s denim at an average price of euro 6.30/pc and euro 6.04/pc respectively. In the year 2017, the men’s denim export saw a decline of 0.33% however the exports of women’s denim registered a surge of 6% and it reached to 93.2 million pcs.

In the year 2018, both segments have shown a good amount of growth. Men’s denim grew at 10.75% however Women’s denim outperformed this time also with a growth rate of 15%. Both segments have also maintained their respective price at a more competitive level. Men’s denim average price in 2018 was euro 5.87/pc and women’s denim average price was euro 5.51/pc.

    C H I N A

Everything is not well in China, especially with the Textile & Garment Industry. The rise in labor costs and a tariff war with the US has adversely affected Chinese Denim Industry also. Meanwhile, China has also slowly started routing its investment in countries like Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam to compensate for the losses it has been incurring due to these issues .

In 2016, the country shipped 30.08 million pcs of Men’s denim and 49.93 million pcs of Women’s denim at an average price of euro 6.99/pc and euro 6.75/pc respectively. In the year 2017, the men’s denim export saw a massive fall of 14% however the exports of women’s denim registered a surge of 2% and it reached to 50.2 million pcs.

In the year 2018, Men’s segments have shown a good amount of growth. Men’s denim grew at 25% however Women’s denim remained consistent with a growth rate of 2%. Both segments have also maintained their respective price at a more competitive level with 2018 prices slashing severely compared to 2017. This again shows the desparate situation the exporters are in .  Men’s denim average price in 2018 was euro 5.83/pc and women’s denim average price was euro 4.68/pc.

Pakistan has been consistent for the last several years, the country has started to receive the investment from Gulf Countries but any major investment in Textile & Garments Industry has not yet reported yet. However, the proposed China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) may change the prospect of Pakistan Textile & Garment Industry. Under the new leadership, the country has taken several measures in the interest of industry, the government is trying to come up with various initiatives and sops like special energy tariffs in order to cut down the production cost of export items.

Throughout the three years beginning from 2016, Pakistan maintained the export at constant, the export of Men’s denim remained around 70 million pcs and the export of women’s denim varied around 33-35 million pcs. This is not a very good sign for Pakistan as they should actually be growing quite well .

The Average Price of Denim Imports During Jan & Feb 2019

If we extrapolate the figures of imports from these 3 countries for 2019, we can conclude that the following figures of exports might be achieved in 2019 by the year end.

    • Pakistan: 76.87 million pcs (Men Denim) | 40.35 million pcs ( Women Denim) : total about 116 million pcs
    • China: 39.84 million pcs (Men Denim) | 62.65 million pcs ( Women Denim) : total about 101 million pcs
    • Bangladesh:140.59 million pcs (Men Denim) | 117.07 million pcs ( Women Denim) : 257 million pcs

Vietnam has gained more importance in last few months not only because of business treaties including EVFTA and CPTPP, but also due to ongoing tariff trade war between China and USA. China has  been facing heat from USA due to increased duties but the rising labor cost has been becoming a major problem for China and this has created a  good opportunity for Vietnam. A number of companies from China have already started investing in Vietnam to avoid the duty problems in exporting from China. This trend is likely to continue and looking at other benefits in Vietnam , many other countries including Taiwan, Korea and Japan are increasing their investments in Vietnam – and the garment sector is one of the most benefitted one.

From China & HK , leading denim fabric suppliers including Prosperity , Blackpeony ,Foison Textile , XDD Textile, Chanzhou Thome Textile, Zhejiang Xinlan Textile, and Guangzhou Indenim Textile are participating at the show. Prosperity Textiles have recently built their factory in Vietnam and  started their operation and are expected to increase the capacities to a big number.

Reports suggest that Pakistan has been also increasing its exports to USA and hence Vietnam is one of the most strategically growing market for them as well. From Pakistan, the show will have Artistic Milliners, Kassim Denim, Crescent Bahuman, Soorty , Indigo Textile and US Denim Mills . All these companies have been catering to important buyers/brands/retailers including Levis, H&M, Tesco, Inditex, C&A, PVH, GAP and Li Fung.

India has also got a great advantage as its fabric has only 7.5% as duty in Vietnam and due to having a great diplomatic relationship between the both countries , the duty is expected to be reduced further in next 2-3 years. From India, Arvind Limited, KG Fabriks, Bhaskar Denim, Anubha Industries, Malwa and Ramsons are exhibiting.
