TOP 10 COUNTRIES SUPPLYING DENIM FABRICS TO SRILANKA

In the month of April 2019, SriLanka has imported approx. 1.1 million kgs of denim fabrics. Since the data is available not in SQM but in KGS we will have to make deductions on the basis of the same. Assuming that an average weight of 9oz fabric has been shipped, we can roughly calculate that about 3.1 million mtrs of fabrics with 150 cm width has been shipped to Sri Lanka during this month. If the average weight considered is less than 9 oz the quantity will be more and if it is say 10 oz , the quantity will be around 2.3 million mtrs.

CHINA is the biggest exporter of Denim Fabric to SriLanka with a total volume of about 4 lakh kgs at an average price of USD 5.8/kgs. Pakistan is the 2nd biggest denim supplier which exported 2.9 lakh kgs of denim fabric at an average price of USD 5.3/kgs. India contributed 22.6% of the total import of denim fabric of SriLanka with total volume as 2.6 lakh kgs.Italy on the other hand maintained the highest average price for import at USD 15.6/kgs.

(Note: this data has been captured from various govt organizations including customs. the actual imports are likely to be higher than this figure .)

  • UNIQLO – The Japanese Fashion Retailer Sets Foot In India

UNIQLO – The Japanese Fashion Retailer Sets Foot In India

Finally, the biggest Japanese fashion retailer is going to debut in India and mark its entry with the opening of three stores in Delhi, NCR region. Uniqlo is a casual wear designer, manufacturer, and retailer and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. It is one of the largest brands in the retail market with more than 3K stores across the world and its entry into India was long-awaited. According to its website, Asian markets of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and other parts of Asia are generating strong growth. As India is a country with a large youth population which is getting attracted to western wear, it is surely the next target market for UNIQLO to increase its sales.

UNIQLO , Japan’s Fashion Retailer Sets Foot In India | Denimsandjeans

“Given the size and fast growth of the Indian market, the launch will for the first time involve three separate stores to be able to offer LifeWear to as many people as possible,” the company said.

The first store will be opened on October 2019, at Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj, South Delhi spread across 3 floors of the mall covering 35000 sq. feet of space. The second one will be opened at DLF Place Saket, also in South Delhi while the third store will be located at DLF CyberHub in Gurugram. To be sure, Uniqlo’s India entry has been a talking point for the past about three years. After H&M, Gap and Aeropostale launched almost within the same year between 2015 and 2016, the time gap for the next large international retail brand launch has been long. However, the company has been researching the market for some time now before making its entry. Uniqlo will be running its operations independently and not tie up with any local retailer.

“We are committed to the Indian market and are very excited to be launching our first three stores in Delhi, a region that embraces diversity and culture, from art and design to craftsmanship and fashion,” UNIQLO Founder and Chairman, President & CEO, Fast Retailing Tadashi Yanai said.

The store will showcase Asia’s size specific collection including, men, women, kids and babies and has a target to beat Spain’s Zara and Swedish retailer H&M to sell more apparel globally.  Uniqlo is expected to compete with these brands in the Indian market, although being a fast fashion brand Forever21 will also be a competition. Being a hot country, Uniqlo’s assortment of cotton clothes might be well received.

“We look forward to offering our high-quality, affordable LifeWear apparel to the people of India,” he added.

The brand’s entry was made after the allowance of FDI in single-brand retail in India to which Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, Indian Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, announced further relaxation on sourcing norms for single-brand retailers. Although 30 percent of the products by a foreign company must be sourced from local suppliers, preferably medium and small enterprises.

UNIQLO , Japan’s Fashion Retailer Sets Foot In India | Denimsandjeans

The collection was previewed at its website for the Indian customers with a price range of garments starting from Rs. 490 ($7)  for men t-shirts, Rs. 1,490 ($21) for women pants and formal men’s shirts will be in the range of Rs. 1,990 to Rs. 2,490. Jeans are mainly in the price range of Rs 2490-Rs 2990 ($35-40).  The brand’s iconic Ultra-light down vests jackets had the range between Rs. 3,490 to Rs. 4,990 ($50-$64) .The prices are not much different from their US or EU prices and it needs to be seen how their quality is being received by the customers.

Uniqlo’s debut increases the competition in the Indian apparel market. It would be interesting to explore the foreign collection. Stay tuned for more information or visit UNIQLO.COM!

Its Our Denim Now : New Generation Collection By GAP

The new generation fit collection launched by the American Clothing brand GAP for its Fall 19 has been exhibited by the campaign – “Its Our Denim Now”. It was a 60 seconds anthem that showcased different styles and fit that included the true skinny women/men jeans, high rise cigarette style , straight fit jeans and much more. The collection offers comfortable and soft jeans for men prepared by the GapFlexx technology .The versatile nature of the denim was depicted by the contemporary dance in this campaign. See video below:

The dance was  seamlessly perfomed while changing different denims smoothly on the move. The dancers mould into different styles and fits while moving on the music. The campaign was directed by Fleur Fortuné which was set to Ndidi O’s 2008 track “Move Together” and the imagery was shot by Tyler Mitchell , the 24 year old photographer from Brooklyn.

“Fall is momentous for Gap as we celebrate our 50th anniversary and the new era of the brand,” says Gap’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Alegra O’Hare.”With ‘It’s Our Denim Now’ being my first major campaign, we wanted to make an impactful statement visually and celebrate Gap’s heritage as a denim leader while cementing its future as a brand for all generations. This is only the beginning of what’s to come.”

Gap said in a press release that the launch film champions the “diversity and the versatility of Gap denim” and shows that “when you feel comfortable in your own skin, you are empowered to move towards an optimistic future.” The movie with the new styles and fits encouraged the new generation to pave the path together with being comfortable in your own skin and the lyrics of the song “we can get there faster if we all move together”  inspires unity and uncovers the brand’s long history of bridging gaps and bringing people together.

“It’s Our Denim Now” also teases upcoming Fall collections that look to the heritage as the brand celebrates its 50th anniversary. The brand will be launching a limited-edition Denim through Decades capsule on  August 20 with updated iconic styles from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.The unifying power was beautifully represented in the first ads by the new agency of GAP – Johannes Leonardo.

  • Ian Berry does it again – pushes his work to yet another level

Ian Berry does it again – pushes his work to yet another level

Ian Berry has had another sell out and successful show in London, with all the work selling by the opening day. His exhibition Hotel California also gained critical success with London magazine Londonist naming it the must see show of the month, and FAD putting it in the top seven shows to see in July. The BBC covered it and soon it will be beaming around the world and various channels, but, it is in person you need to see the work – and many did in London. Ian Berry turned denim back to water with his incredible technique which when you stand back totally don’t realise is denim.

‘When I started I always wanted to point out it was denim, now I hide that it is denim and see that as a challenge.’ Ian said.  In fact after years of covering his work, you see it is a challenge in each show, how light hits a metallic shiny launderette washing machine, a polished bar top, or the inside of a subway.

We wrote about his Behind Closed Door work (https://www.denimsandjeans.com/recovery/events/behind-closed-doors-by-ian-berry/23754) and again, it was light in interiors that created his moods, impressing with the tiles on the floor and how the light effected it, just out of denim. That show was quite dark and Ian has transformed this new work to reflect bright Californian light with the hotels and pools of the state which made denim the state’s official fabric! The show was such a success that they put on another event to mark it and Ian’s long relationship with the gallery. It was also in aid of British charity Jeans for Genes – that supports families with Genetic Disorders. The charity is famed for an event in September – Jeans for Genes day, where schools and workplace allow people to wear our favorite material, jeans in return for a donation. The event raised money for the charity.

The charity also sells shirts, this year working with Batman for a special shirt. Ian is one of their ambassadors and modelled the shirt for the charity. The Batman version with Warner Brothers is proving popular with children. Ian will do further work with the charity. Not only that, but Ian collaborated with Kongsgaard Raw Gin to make a special denim edition. The Danish Gin makers are famed for their use of apples and also their sustainability – the only Gin brand to plant a whole forest and will be soon carbon neutral! The Gin is hand crafted so Ian made an edition of ten hand crafted labels – all the letters cut by hand, another ten with Raw denim – the ‘Raw Limited Edition’ that Tonello helped to laser. And then a further five that were one off originals and made to reflect different pieces of work in Ian’s exhibition – like his Hotel California record store, the secret Garden (that hung in the gallery window, again with the support of Tonello) and one to reflect a pool.

The week before the show opened Ian was in Barcelona with Tonello where he collaborated with his friends there who had been showing with ITMA, their most important event. To celebrate they had a ‘Inspiring’ night where Ian, Tonello and his friend Juan Manual, along with Oficina +39 joined forces to make a new version of the hanging trellis that hung in New York – lit with a mood and a beautiful film of the making of that set a beautiful ambience for the evening.

ORTA Is Writing Denim’S New Story @Denimsandjeans India

Trends are no longer as reliable as they were. Choices shift, climate changes, expectations vary, target consumers and their preferences change. Yet, this is not standing in the way of Turkish Company ORTA’s capability to keep moving forward. Sustainable environment is most important and as per  ORTA , they are consistently ” RE-defining, RE-mixing, RE-constructing, RE-modeling, and most importantly RE-thinking “

The eco-modern generation is marching for revolution and they want to wear denim that tells a new story. As a response, ORTA questions :

“What would denim look like in a world of abundance?”

and invites you to take the journey with them to RE-imagine a future where engineered materials are ethically and ecologically sound. ORTA is taking the next big step and creating a new story for denim production. Being planet positive has always been ORTA’s main focus, however, with the changing world; there are still mountains to climb.

ORTA believes that scarcity should be replaced with abundance that biology will create, and in this scope they have partnered with the Bio-Design Challenge (BDC) on a new prize for BDC 2019. The goal of this challenge for ORTA is to pioneer denim at the cutting edge of biology and design. The BDC offers university students the opportunity to envision future applications of biotechnology in a competition that highlights student work.

ORTA IS READY TO FIND NEW HORIZONS

This season, ORTA,RE-interpreted “work-wear” and “luxury performance”. Common Ground is unisex “work-wear” RE-imagined with a playful twist. On the other hand a new “soft-wear” is being demanded, so, ORTA created SYMPHONY. This season ORTA also have a continuum of the concepts ARCHIVE CHRONICLES, ZERO-MAX and LIGHT FORCE.

    COMMON GROUND - REDEFINED

ORTA says they are constantly RE-thinking the world in the most important common ground: The planet Earth. Common Ground is the RE-definition of the gender-free looks with a playful twist and RE-imagining of the earthly appeal. Common Ground is a denim line where unisex “work-wear” is remodeled as the new unisex fits; UNIFIT.

ORTA RE-thinks by following the path of the pioneers who created the gender- free fashion. Of course, alongside comes another great benefit, Common Ground is the high-performance denim with different color stories, authentic material usage and warm touches for greater looks.

The vintage look is RE-created with today’s environmental and human respective processes and the most authentic looks.

Today, ORTA RE-imagined vintage with a comfort of elasticity that reaches a ratio of 45%-60%. New silhouettes in rich deep hues and a wide range of color and textures…

“Today, the future of vintage looks and feels fresh ! ” – ORTA
