Evisu has launched a new Denim Project called Dirty Dozen + 1 (DD+1) in association with Superfuture and the Blue in Green store in NY . 13 people are wearing a pair each of special customized jeans from Evisu – hand painted by a famous Japanese artist. The jeans shall be worn for a period of 13 months and evaluated….

I like the way Evisu spends time and energy in getting out products which will have ‘TIME APPEAL’ – ie they will be become better with time and age like OLD WINE… I would have liked to know the kind of fabric they are using in this project .. Will post when available….

Want to see how the jeans has been hand painted ? See here

  • Grungy Denim . A new trend for 2008?

There have been some forecasts that a new trend for Spring/Summer 2008 may be the GRUNGY DENIM..….
These Jeans basically have a patchy high contrast bleached look – the 80s punk look.
Though this washing style has not been noticed in many brands, there are some points that merit attention:
a)The current trends in denim looks the world over follow from the Premium Denim brands. These brands are basically encashing their expertise in providing a high quality fabric, washed and sanded nicely(many times hand sanded) and with some standout embellishments like Pocket designing etc. Of course the importance of FIT can never be forgotten as one of their primary strengths.
b)These trends are being followed in some measure by other manufacturers around the world – who are also trying to provide the similar jeans at a lower cost.
c)In the last 1-2 years there has been no distinctive denim look which has come in and the current washes and looks are getting somewhat jaded and there is a need for something fresh.

Thus there IS A NEED for some FRESH LOOK IN DENIMS. However, whether that will be GRUNGY LOOK or something else remains to be seen..I feel that a look similar to GRUNGY may come in provided it is MORE ELEGANT looking and does not give the PUNKISH or a CHEAP look. Designed Patchiness or GRUNGINESS (nice terminology i think !) may be considered an option for the next year.

  • Fall 2007 Denim trends – Wide legged and Skinny Jeans

Denim for fall 2007 is going to be a story of two extreme styles – Skinny and Wide Legged . Skinny jeans has been in for quite some time with various celebrities including Kate Moss endorsing the same. Now Kate Moss , Lindsay Lohan, Naomi Campbell, Angela Basset and others have been seen in Wide Legged Jeans(see my previous post).
However, wide legged jeans is going to have more appeal as it can fit a larger range of bodies and is a fresh look since it has not been around quite a while. It is also expected that both the trends will go on simultaneously and skinny jeans is not going to fade away so easily.

Among the Wide legged Jeans there can be a simple Casual style and a Trouser style. Both are same silhouette but with different details. Trouser style has slash pockets and trouser style waistband and crease whereas the Casual will be much more casual.
Wide legged jeans are not and neither expected to be Distressed. They are very clean and flat – an indication of influence of 70s……
The CLEAN and FLAT look required for Wide Legged Jeans may create further demand for the already popular FLAT FINISH DENIMS (mercerised).. Washing treatments may be less rigorous thus saving the manufacturers some bucks ( which they will spend on the extra fabric they use !)

  • ‘Kato’ – Original Denim from Japan

I just do not seem to be stopping to write about Japanese denim. There actually is so much to learn from them that it feels great to write about them.
Kato’ is a brand from Japan which is making special Natural Jeans. Their Jeans are made from Zimbabwe Cotton and are dyed by the ‘Hank System’ in natural indigo . This is the oldest system of dyeing cotton in Indigo in which the yarn spends one day in dyeing to the core and another day is spent hanging in a steam room.. The Denim is then woven on 32″ slow shuttle looms ..The jeans are hand riveted and details hand stitched..
All these slow processes add up to the cost a lot . However, Connoiseur items are not made easily and by everyone and are also not affordable by everybody (prices in range about USD 300)..
ANd the looks are COOL…..Kato Denim

By the way, pertinent to mention that Hiroshi Kato of ‘Kato’ also designed some selvedge denim for Arvind in India..

  • Levi’s ties up with the world’s most expensive artist to create new collection

Damien Hirst is suppposed to the most expensive artist in the world because of the astounding prices at which his creations sell – whether it is Diamond covered skull, or Sharks in Formaldehyde(!) etc.

Damien Hirst is lending his talents to Levi’s and helping them develop the collection of Spring 2008 Warhol Factory X Levi’s Label(to be launched at New York Fashion Week in September) . The Warhol Factory X Collection was first launched in 2006 and paid tribute to Andy Warhol’s famous pop-culture art. This collection is priced between USD 190 – USD 250/- for Jeans and USD 80-300 for tops. The full name of the collection will Warhol Factory X Levi’s X Damien Hirst

    Why is Levi’s doing this?

The answer is very simple. They want to strengthen their image as an important manufacturer of Premium Jeans . Levi’s has been able to grow its profits in 2006 largely because of their increased sales of Premium high-end Jeans. And they want to make more profits by selling more of these jeans.
Premium Jeans is about 4.3% of the US Jeanswear market and had been growing at a rapid pace of about 40-45% p.a – though last year the growth rate declined to about 23%.
But still there is a lot of space in this segment to make profits from..

  • Old Navy – Fall 2007 Denim Collection – Latest trends in Denim

Old Navy debuts its Fall 2007 line in stores featuring various striking trends.

    Color Denim:
As I previously mentioned , Color Denim trend is likely to be picked up by various brands. Old Navy is offering its skinny denims in crimson red, yellow, gunmetal grey, cobalt blue, and pastel purple(USD 29.50) .
A complete antithesis of skinny jeans is the Wide Legged denim – which is also being taken up
in a small way. The jeans are priced at USD 34.50 .. Wide legged jeans trend is not expected to grow as big as skinny jeans , simply because wide legged jeans can be carried by very few females(normally) gracefully.

    New Fits

Old Navy aims to introduce three new fits :

Diva – sexy low rise waist and body hugging .
Flirt – Classic fit with a medium rise
Sweetheart – Casual fit and high rise

It remains to be seen whether the customers find these fits novel or they are just novel names…

Old Navy is a division of Gap Inc and brings customers on-trend apparel and accessories at amazing prices, all in a fun and energizing shopping environment.
Gap Inc. is a leading international specialty retailer offering clothing, accessories and personal care products for men, women, children and babies under the Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Piperlime brand names. Fiscal 2006 sales were $15.9 billion. Gap Inc. operates more than 3,100 stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Ireland and Japan

  • Victoria Beckham launches her own dvb line of denims

    dvb-denim-launch-photo-of-victoria.jpg
Victoria Beckham launched her debut denim collection this week in New York to a multitude of photographers, television cameras and journalists.

Beckham has boosted her profile by unveiling her dVb collection of denim jeans, skirts and shorts at Saks department store on Fifth Avenue.

Wearing her own white jeans, silver heels, and a sparkly, silver vest, Victoria posed for photographers before heading upstairs to sign autographs for fans waiting in line.

The dvb jeans will have large star stitched on the back pockets and will cost around USD 250/- (dark denims). The dVb range also includes retro style sunglasses.

I think its a lot easy for these celebs to launch their own labels which ride comfortably on the strength of their popularity. However, the real test comes within a year of the launch when the publicity dies down a little and the Jeans has to perform.. Lets wait and watch how dvb performs.

  • 1945 Levi’s from Japan?

It may seem improbable that the most authentic vintage versions of the most famous American Apparel brand – Levi’s – have to be bought in a some ‘Hinoya Plus Mart’ in Japan…
But it is true as New Times Reports . The vintage Levi’s with the most authentic accessories including Scovill Zippers , can be found in this obscure mart in Tokyo.
So much so that Levi’s has been forced to sue them . And of course that has not been without a sense of guilt since Levi’s itself has not been able to produce such authentic versions of their own Brand!

Well, we can all trust Japanese to go to any levels to achieve perfection and beat everyone . The same applies to denims also. It must also be marveled that the Japanese are still able to produce and sell their Denim Fabrics at their prices inspite of the fact that this fabric has been commodotised to a large extent ..Hats off to them..

  • Evisu (Japan) to open the first store in US

Evisu – the premium Japanese denim brand , is to open its first store in North America later this summer.
Evisu is quite popular and has sort of cult status in US and it was logical that they encash this status.
The store will be given a Japanese touch with films from Japan being filmed and the option to buyers to personalise their jeans by hand painting.
